Favorites : American Pop (1981)

Animation has always been fascinating to me.  Like most people, I was introduced to animation via Disney films and Saturday morning cartoons.  I didn’t realize that there were vastly different styles of animation until I stumbled across the anime Castle In The Sky, and then Akira soon after, films that showed me how traditional animation can be taken to a deeper level.  Then, via The Hobbit and the Fritz the Cat films (and Heavy Metal if I’m being truly honest), I learned about both rotoscoping and animation with adult topics.  When I came to find out that Ralph Bakshi had a hand in the last 3 films mentioned, I was hooked... shortly after was when I was exposed to American Pop, which changed me forever. 

American Pop is the story of four generations of men from the same bloodline and their associations with American history and music from the early 20th century onward.  Zalme (Jeffrey Lippa) is a young Russian immigrant relocated to America in the wake of the Cossacks’ trail of destruction.  He meets Louie (Jerry Holland) and quickly becomes involved in the vaudeville/burlesque circuit.  After puberty and an injury overseas during World War I, he returns to New York to marry burlesque dancer Bella (Lisa Jane Persky).  Their son, Benny (Richard Singer), is a gifted but jaded pianist who goes into the army to spite Zalme despite his vast talent.  As a compromise, Benny marries the daughter of mob boss Nicky Polumbo (Ben Frommer) and gets her pregnant before fighting (and dying) in World War II.  Benny’s son Tony (Ron Thompson) grows up disillusioned, hits the road, gets wrapped up in the decadence of the 1960s, including the free-love, eventually coming into contact with Little Pete (Eric Taslitz) an estranged son from a tryst during his time in Kansas on his way to California.  Tony and Pete head back to New York, where Tony’s ever-growing drug habit reinvigorates the growing divide between himself and Pete.  Eventually left on his own, Pete moves forward with life, unknowingly fulfilling the family legacy.

This film effortlessly strings together its own narrative, a brief rundown of major American events from the turn of the 20th century to the 1980s, and popular music that is not only era-specific but informative to the overall narrative.  Seeing depictions of the Triangle Shirtwaist disaster, the gun violence of prohibition, World War I and II imagery and so, all side by side with actual images that correspond to these events and times, deepens the emotional investment in the story.  The depictions that are meant to emulate different musicians, bands, celebrities and cultural events further help the viewer place where we are in both the story and the history of the 20th century.

Bakshi’s rotoscope style is used to great effect in American Pop.  The dance numbers leap off the screen, and when you come across the footage they are based on, it becomes quite surreal.  The characters move the way that actual humans do, but manage to retain that ink and paint demeanor of cartoons, blurring the line between art and reality.  Combined with the minimalist and artistic backgrounds, as well as the still paintings that are integrated into the film, the movie leaves indelible impressions on the viewer.

I don’t even know where to begin with the voice performances in this film... Ron Thompson’s double duty roles were both on the money, especially Tony, easily one of my favorite and most quotable cartoon characters.  Jeffrey Lippa brings a wonderful grit to the young Zalme.  Marya Small is both endearing and frustrating in her moody portrayal of Frankie Hart.  Richard Singer’s lazefaire approach to Benny is utterly heartbreaking in tandem with the outcome of his character.  Eric Taslitz is more than up to the challenge of playing an innocent and a non-victim of circumstances in his role as Little Pete.

Period point black, see American Pop if you’re into American music, history or cultural events in any way, shape or form.  This film is not only entertaining, it is educating on a scholarly and emotional level as well.  Long live the adult animation of Ralph Bakshi.
