"I'm not going to escape, there is no escaping one's fate," Haydee retorted. She understood he wouldn't trust her and she didn't expect him to leave her roaming in her home after slaughtering people left and right. She wasn't dumb and it felt as if he thought she was and it upset her--one more thing to upset her. Granted, it was possibly not personal.
But he had agreed, even by taking yet another jab at humans in general, for her to find her family so once they made it outside she started looking around. Small groups of 2 or 3s checking on wounded, shutting other people's eyes, crying, being eerily quiet.
She spotted Bree first, patching someone in the distance and Haydee let go of a breath she was holding and smiled, looking up at Ronan for a moment and dropping the smile the moment she met his eyes. "I'll be right back okay?" she said letting go of his hand and started walking towards Bree when she heard Ben--Ben her cousin, not her uncle grunting and running, towards them. No, towards Ronan, with a knife in his hand. Was he stupid or beyond caring? Either one applied.
"Benjamin no!" she yelled and stood in the way between her cousin and the fae King, reaching for Ben's arm. "That's enough! We broke the treaty, stop or you'll kill those that are left," she spat out, taking the knife from his cousin who was 3 heads taller than her but had his shoulders dropped, looking like an overgrown puppy. She noticed then her uncle, injured but trailing behind his son, smiling sadly at her. "You're leaving with him, aren't you?" the old Ben said and she nodded, not letting the young Ben talk.
"It's my duty. It will keep you all safe. You get to rule, you will rebuild and--and I'll be fine. I'm always fine," she said clearing her throat and pursing her lips together with a little nod. "I'll miss all of you, but I have to go. I'm choosing to go," she said that last part looking at her cousin. "We don't have much time, but I didn't want to go without--without seeing you, and letting you know that I'm choosing to go and that... that I think you'll be a wonderful king uncle Ben," she whispered with a small smile, hugging him tightly. The other Ben also hugged her and then Bree made it in time.
"Here, it's cold in the fae Kingdom," Ben added setting his thick winter cloak over Haydee's shoulders. The one he used for hunting and battle. The one that had many hidden pockets and things. "It'll keep you warm and remind you of all of us." and then he held her again for a moment before letting her go.
Clearing her throat and adjusting the cloak around herself she took a deep breath and turned to face King Ronan again. "I'm ready to go now," she added taking a few more steps to stand next to the Fae king.
ronan's eyes cast down to their hands as their fingers laced together. he felt the gentle softness of human skin against his own, having to remember that humans don't tend to run as cold as fae do. mostly he was surprised that her hands were so soft, it had been a moment since he had touched a human willingly. he squeezed her hand as if affirming she had agreed to her fate and turned to guide her back towards his horses. the customs of what was to be expected when retrieving the human sacrifice had long been tossed aside, it was now no longer making sure the girl would be comfortable, it was simply just getting her back to his palace.
typically he would have a horse drawn carriage awaiting whomever was selected, keeping the inner compartment warm and comfortable for the human to not be shocked by the harsh chill of the winter court. but as they descended the blood soaked steps and he helped maneuver over the bodies of the fallen soldiers who had risked their lives, all that awaited them were the horses they had brought with them. giant horses with coats as black as midnight standing patiently for ronan and the others.
ronan paused when she insisted seeing her uncle and cousins, looking down at her with judgemental eyes. his instincts told him to not honor this wish, that she would find the first opportunity to escape and start this chase all over again. but he didn't air these concerns instead he released her hand and gave her a curt nod. "i can allow you to see them, but you won't be going alone. either we walk or ride to where they are."
"make this quick, you do not want to be caught outside of the walls of my kingdom after dark." he instructed as he signaled to his men. "ten minutes is all you get, any longer and my men will come looking for us." there was a sharp warning in his tone before gesturing for her to lead the way.
"i always forget how...sentimental humans can be. if it brings some type of comfort to your family to do something so tedious then so be it."

@kctabasis doing the #OBSESSED thing again (from here)
ronan stood in the great hall of this pathetic kingdom, his hand raising high in the air to cease the movement of any other fae within it. a chilling silence fell as he regarded the girl in front of her. the streaks of her tears stained her cheeks and his eyes fell to the weapon in her hand. humans were such obvious creatures, reacting on emotion than thought when put into such situations. but no matter his personal qualms with the mortal beings, ronan had very good reason to bring death to the doors of this kingdom. his eyes rested on the girl in front of him, the one he was owed. "be happy your father met a swift and clean death, there are worse things i could have done with him." he replied. boots echoed against the floor as he walked closer to the girl, studying her with intensity. a pity really, allowing your kingdom to be brought to its knees simply for not adhering to what had been agreed upon. one sacrifice and the humans no longer hunt the fae. one sacrifice and the fae no longer kill the humans. and yet this king had felt he was above them all, enough that he didn't need to give this girl away. her defiance caused a smile to stretch over his lips. at least she was willing to fight back against something. she had fight, more than he could say for her father. he glanced down at the limp body sprawled at their feet, even dead humans were distasteful.
"i've left enough of your people alive to re-build this so called kingdom." he said finally, eyes going back to her's. "i only came to get what was owed to me. and now that i have you i will give you your one and only choice." one more step, his hand reaching up and taking her chin in his hand as if inspecting her. "die by the same sword that killed your pathetic father or return to my court to become my bride."
Haydee's body was shaking from anger and despair but she was still standing tall in front of this impossible tall and menacing man. She was not going to cave and she may die soon -- very soon, but she'd die standing, defending the things she believed in the most.
she listened to his words with furrowed eyebrows. she knew there were deals with the fae kingdom, treaties but whenever she asked about them her father and uncle would change the topic, would tell her there was nothing for her to worry about. clearly, they had lied and... and something was definitely not right.
this man--whatever he was--seemed to be speaking quite fairly for someone that had just masacred their kingdom and spoke of having her. her? the princess? she knew that it was a (horrible) custom to snatch the princesses and kill the princes whenever another kingdom won, she half expected that but what the king was saying had a different tone to it.
and his hand gripping at her chin was warm, burning hot, crass and soft all at once and her mind and heart were even more confused. he was here to kill her, of course he was.
"wai--bride?" she asked with visible confusion in her features, the knife held by her right hand dropping to the side. she couldn't fight this man, she could try and stab him of course but he'd break her neck in a split second and then her kingdom will be nothing but ashes.
"you--i was owed to you? what are you talk--" she shook her head and look down at her father, trying to remember. "you want me, a human, to marry you? why?" she asked in mild disbelief. it didn't make any sense whatsoever.
unless...
was that the treaty? she thought it was a sacrifice of some kind, but--but not this. she would do it though, if it meant securing the lives of her people and the survival of the kingdom. she would do it without hesitation so why, why did his father never told her? or her uncle? why they got themselves into this pointless war that killed so many?
"you killed them all because... because you wanted me and they didn't...?"

ronan stood in the great hall of this pathetic kingdom, his hand raising high in the air to cease the movement of any other fae within it. a chilling silence fell as he regarded the girl in front of her. the streaks of her tears stained her cheeks and his eyes fell to the weapon in her hand. humans were such obvious creatures, reacting on emotion than thought when put into such situations. but no matter his personal qualms with the mortal beings, ronan had very good reason to bring death to the doors of this kingdom.
his eyes rested on the girl in front of him, the one he was owed.

Her father was gone now, he had sacrificed himself so she could live. Their kingdom had been run over by this man's--this dark force that took and took and took and left nothing alive to grow under his thumb. Haydee had to do something but couldn't do it if she were dead--she couldn't think straight, not with his father's blood still in her hands and his words resonating in her ears: 'live to die another day.' odd last words but she understood the meaning. she had to make it through today, she had to stay alive in order to help her people--the few that were left.
King Ronan walked into the throne room as she was refusing to let them take her father's body--she was standing tall, crying, holding a small blade defensively. She was not going to kneel and she was not going to let anyone desecrate her father's body.
She was still a princess though--a Queen now, wasn't she? She was not going to go quietly. Going too quietly, admitting defeat would be showing her cards. She had to be smart, smarter than that. She had outwit the new King. How? She didn't know. The why was all that mattered. Keep her people safe, keep her lands alive.
"I will not. And I will not let your men desecrate my father's body. He was the King, a loved King. He deserves better than that," She finally spoke through barely parted lips, keeping herself steady, but lowering her weapon.

"i always forget how...sentimental humans can be. if it brings some type of comfort to your family to do something so tedious then so be it."
Haydee took a deep, calming breath when he once again decided to insult not merely her father but her entire race. Angry tears were streaming down her face but she was still standing tall, quiet, watching him from up close, trying to gauge him from not only what he had caused in her lands, in her life but him as a person. Fae. Whatever he may be.
'Your life may have some merit,' if she were in any other moment, in any normal moment and not shielding her dead father's body with more than half of her kingdom brought to pieces she would've screamed, scratched and topple him until he was bleeding and bruised--she was a lady but she was also brought up with her cousins and they had taught her at a very young age just where to attack a man should he ever come too close. And King Ronan was far too close, and what was worse, getting on her nerves.
And yet, she did nothing. Because it would've been foolish. She would die, next to her father and with her what was left of the Kingdom. Her uncle and cousins would quickly follow--if they hadn't already.
Save the rest of the humans. Save what was left. She could do that. She was going to do that. She nodded, more to herself for self-reassurance than to him, clearing her throat and quickly brushing off tears from her face, shaking her head a smidge to shake off all the emotions that were coursing through her in that moment.
"I will go with you," she began, taking careful, measured steps towards him and his extended hand. She stared at it for a moment, a fleet of doubt of whether what was ahead of her was worse than dying right now--with the intense hate he felt for humans it probably was, but she'd take it. It was her duty. She would take it for her people.
She reached for his hand and held it with hers, tangling her fingers with his. It was an odd gesture of familiarity she did with her cousin Bree and always hoped she'd get to do with her husband. It felt quite odd and foreign but she'd make the most of it. She'll kill him with kindness. Fae or not, hate or not, she had a duty, such as he did. "I do need to find my uncle or cousins--they need to know I'm leaving because I want to---my King," she tried the title and it felt like she was swallowing a frog. "If they think I'm not, if they think you took me against my will the blodshed won't stop and, yes, all humans will be dead but many of the Fae will die too."

ronan released her chin from his hand, letting it drop to his side as he eyed the girl. up close he was able to regard her with scrutiny, see if she was worth destroying a kingdom for. ronan didn't like that this human had been his reason for leaving his throne, his kingdom, his people, to come here. you don't ben will to beings beneath you, a hard lesson he learned at a very early age. but a deal is a deal, no more dead if they uphold their end of the treaty and they had failed.
"did they not tell you? typical of your kind." he said with a click of his tongue. he was not about to pretend to understand why humans did the things they did. if her father had chosen to keep the arrangement a secret then he didn't care to dig any deeper into it, all he knew was what he was owed and he was owed a bride.
"it is not really a want. more a need. if i do not marry you what is stopping your people from killing mine and vice versa? consider it a mercy upon those still alive here that we are getting married, your life will finally have some merit." ronan picked up a piece of her hair and inspected it before letting if fall back to her shoulder just so.
"i killed them to get what was promised. your father refused to uphold his end of our treaty that has been in place for many years and it caused his downfall." he took a couple of steps back and smirked down at the younger girl. "and now you have the opportunity to right a wrong, we are going back to my kingdom and you will save the rest of these humans from meeting the same fate as your father."
ronan signaled to his men with a wave of his hand, signaling for them to wrap up whatever they were doing and prepare to leave. turning back to haydee and holding out his hand for her to take. "your kingdom is no longer yours to protect, your loyalty now belongs to my kingdom." he says these words as if they are fact, as if they are law. "i have a horse ready for you, it's time to go."

open to: m/f/nb | summary: ronan's army has just overthrown the last of y/m's kingdom and now demands y/m kneel and accept him as their new rightful ruler (can be a rival kingdom type of scenario) | honestly this can be his fae or human verse it doesn't matter!
it was never easy for others to accept their new reality, to have everything they knew be ripped away so easily. that was the problem with empires, they were made to fall. ronan had long stopped counting the ones he'd taken, no sense in remembering the weak when history favored the strong. when he had strolled into the throne room his boots had echoed off of the floor and walls as if announcing to all that their new ruler had arrived. resistance in accepting a new ruler was always troubling for some but never for him. "it seems like you're having trouble understanding your situation." he said, voice coming out low. "i said, kneel."
