Reds Edge Twins, But Clinch Division.
Reds 5 Twins 3 W-Iglesias (4-3) L-Thielbar (2-1)
The Minnesota Twins had the American League Central Division on a platter this afternoon. If they won today then they would have clinched the division for the second consecutive season. A close game ensued at a rainy Target Field. A pitcher’s duel broke out as Sonny Gray and Rich Hill threw up zeroes for the first four innings. The Twins bats got to work in the fifth when Jake Cave drew a lead-off walk. He went to second on a groundball and third on a wild pitch. Cave would later score on a Sonny Gray balk for the game’s first run. The Reds would answer in the sixth as Joey Votto drew a two-out walk. Eugenio Suarez doubled him home to tie the game at one. The Twins would come right back in the bottom of the sixth. Max Kepler led-off with a walk and Luis Arraez lined a base hit to center. A wild pitch moved up the runners and Eddie Rosario hit a sac fly to right. This put the Twins up 2-1 after six frames. The Reds answered in the seventh as Jesse Winker doubled with one out. Freddy Galvis hit an RBI single to right and the game was tied at two. The bullpens held up through the rest of regulation and extra innings were needed today. The Reds offense broke out in a big way in the tenth inning. Michael Lorenzen started the inning at second base. Curt Casali lined a one-out single to center. The next batter Tucker Barnhardt lined a run-scoring single to right and the Reds led 3-2. Nick Castellanos walked and Joey Votto plated a run with a bases loaded walk. Eugenio Suarez hit an RBI single to left and the Reds had a three-run lead. The Twins would try to make things interesting in the bottom of the tenth. Jorge Polanco started the inning at second base and Marwin Gonzalez plated him with a single to center. This pulled the Twins within two, but Raisel Iglesias got the next three batters to close out the game. The White Sox lost to the Cubs, so the Twins clinched the American League Central Division today.
-Final Thoughts- Rich Hill had a very strong outing today. He went 5 2/3 innings and allowed a run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Matt Wisler picked up two outs, Tyler Clippard gave up a run in 2/3 of an inning, and Caleb Thielbar allowed an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings. Sergio Romo did not register an out and allowed two runs. Jorge Alcala got the final two outs of the tenth. Luis Arraez led the team with two hits. The Twins hit 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. The Twins now clinched the third seed and will face the Houston Astros on Tuesday at Target Field. Kenta Maeda will get the start against what I figure to be Zack Greinke. It should be an exciting playoff run in this crazy 2020 season.

NEW YORK | Yanks load bases in 9th, but Rays rookie escapes for 3-1 win
New Post has been published on https://is.gd/j3V9SL
NEW YORK | Yanks load bases in 9th, but Rays rookie escapes for 3-1 win
NEW YORK — As he jogged from the bullpen, Tampa Bay rookie left-hander Adam Kolarek reminded himself that he’s pitched out of bases-loaded, no-out situations before. In the minors, at least.
“It just hasn’t been at this level,” he said. “And certainly not in a stadium like Yankee Stadium.” Or in the majors, period.
Kolarek escaped a critical jam in the ninth inning Thursday for his first career save, lifting the Rays over New York 3-1 to win their first series at Yankee Stadium since 2014. Tampa Bay had lost 12 straight series in the Bronx, a record since the ballpark opened in 2009.
“This can be an intimidating, daunting place to play,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “But I don’t think these guys really concern themselves with that too much.”
Kolarek got his moment in the Bronx spotlight after Sergio Romo struggled in the ninth. Romo allowed consecutive singles to Didi Gregorius and Gleyber Torres — Torres’ bloop ended his 0-for-17 skid — then walked Neil Walker on four pitches.
Cash then called for the side-arming Kolarek. Lefty-hitting Greg Bird popped out in foul territory on his first pitch, and then the 29-year-old Kolarek — who entered with a 6.00 ERA — struck out veterans Brett Gardner and Austin Romine. Romine chased a high fastball clocked at 95 mph.
It was the first time Kolarek had faced bases loaded with no outs in his big league career. He escaped in nine pitches.
“Getting Bird out on that first pitch was huge,” Kolarek said. “Because once you get one out, you’re like, ‘OK, I’m one pitch away.’ To get the strikeouts was just a little bit more special.”
The struggling Yankees lineup, still without injured sluggers Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez, scored just six runs during the three-game series.
“We have people more than capable of putting runs on the board,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “You obviously take two star-level players out, that’s certainly a big deal.”
Tommy Pham returned from the disabled list and helped the Rays jump on Masahiro Tanaka (9-3) with an RBI double during a two-run first inning, and Blake Snell (14-5) and the bullpen took over from there.
The left-handed All-Star made his third start since a DL stint for left shoulder fatigue and struck out six over five innings of two-hit ball. He was coming off five perfect innings against Toronto, though he was pulled from that start after just 47 pitches. He threw 76 pitches Thursday.
The Rays got to Tanaka with four straight hits to open the game. Mallex Smith lined a single the other way, stole second, then scored on Joey Wendle’s double to the right-center gap. After Jake Bauers’ single, Pham got his first hit with the Rays, driving a double off the wall in the left-field corner.
Pham was placed on the DL by Tampa Bay with a broken right foot two games after being acquired from St. Louis on July 31 for a trio of minor leaguers. Pham played one minor league rehab game, homering and getting three hits for Class A Hudson Valley on Wednesday night. He pleaded with Cash to get in the lineup and play his first career game at Yankee Stadium.
Pham added a single in the third, then hit a drive to the warning track in left-center that was caught by center fielder Aaron Hicks leading off the sixth.
Tanaka recovered after his shaky first, pitching scoreless ball for the next five innings before handing off to Zach Britton. Tanaka allowed nine hits, struck out six and also picked off a pair of baserunners.
Bauers squeezed home Smith against David Robertson in the eighth. Bauers’ bunt hugged the first-base line and gave Robertson no chance at a play at the plate.
Smith had two hits from the leadoff spot. He entered the game batting .353 with a .450 on-base percentage since being moved atop the order Aug. 5.
WATCH IT AGAIN
Giancarlo Stanton hit a ball in the eighth off the wall in the right-field corner that was originally ruled a home run by first base umpire Greg Gibson, but overturned to an RBI double after a video review . The ball hit about halfway up the wall, right on the foul stripe, and was nearly touched by a fan.
“Originally Greg thought it was a home run and then he said, ‘I think it was foul because it hit the wall in foul,” crew chief Jerry Layne told a pool reporter. “He goes, ‘I’m trying to get some help here.’ So he didn’t clearly see it. We weren’t a 100 percent.”
PUNCHING UP
The Rays improved to 8-2 in their past 10 against New York and 8-7 overall this season. Tampa Bay hasn’t won the season series since 2014. The teams still have a four-game set at Tropicana Field in late September.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
The first thing Judge did after arriving at Yankee Stadium was put Aretha Franklin on the clubhouse sound system, starting with her version of “I Say A Little Prayer.” The Queen of Soul died Thursday at the age of 76. Judge said his mom was a fan of Franklin’s, and he heard a lot of her music around the house as a kid.
“Good music,” he said. “Perfect for a day game.”
The Yankees played Franklin’s iconic performance from the movie “Blues Brothers” on the video board during the sixth inning.
TRAINER’S ROOM Rays: RHP Jake Faria was optioned to Triple-A Durham to make room for Pham.
Yankees: Hicks was visited by a trainer after reaching on an error in the eighth. He remained in the game. Hicks turned his right ankle slightly on first base but thinks he’ll be fine. … Sanchez did sprints and worked on popping out of the squat in the outfield before the game. It was the first outdoor running for Sanchez since going on the disabled list July 24 with a strained right groin. Sanchez could begin a minor league rehab assignment next week. … Boone is hopeful that LHP CC Sabathia (right knee) will return from the DL to start the next time through the rotation. … RHP Tommy Kahnle was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the spot vacated when RHP Luis Cessa was optioned to the RailRiders on Wednesday night. Kahnle pitched a scoreless inning.
UP NEXT
Rays: RHP Stanek (1-3, 2.45) is the scheduled opener against Boston LHP Brian Johnson (3-3, 3.95) at Fenway Park on Friday night. Yankees: RHP Lance Lynn (8-8, 4.46) faces Toronto RHP Marcus Stroman (4-8, 5.03) on Friday night at Yankee Stadium. Lynn has a 0.54 ERA in three appearances (two starts) since being acquired from Minnesota.

The 7 biggest questions ahead of the Chiefs-Bucs Super Bowl
Tumblr media
Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady square-off in Super Bowl LV. These are the questions that will determine the big game.
Super Bowl 55 is set.
This year, the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers will fight for the right to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in the final game of the 2020-2021 NFL season.
Representing the NFC will be the Bucs, who finished the regular season 11-5 and are making the Super Bowl as a No. 5 seed. They narrowly defeated the top-seeded Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship, 31-26, and will now look to win the franchise’s second Super Bowl.
For the AFC, it’s the Chiefs for a second-straight year following their 38-24 win over the Buffalo Bills. The defending champs are trying to build a dynasty in the making by becoming to first team to win the Super Bowl in consecutive years since Brady and the New England Patriots did it in 2003 and 2004.
Speaking of dynasties, Tom Brady will look to claim his seventh Lombardi Trophy in his first season with Tampa Bay after winning six in New England. It’s Brady’s 10th appearance in the Super Bowl.
This will be the second time Brady and Mahomes have faced off in the playoffs, the last being in the 2019 AFC Championship that saw Brady and the Patriots come way with a 37-31 win in overtime. That was also the Chiefs’ last postseason defeat.
Here is what you need to know about Super Bowl 55.
How to watch Super Bowl 55
Teams: Buccaneers vs. Chiefs
Date: Sunday, Feb. 7
Time: 6 p.m. ET (Approximate kickoff time: 6:30 p.m.)
Location: Raymond James Stadium (Tampa, Florida)
TV Channel: CBS
Announcers: Jim Nantz and Tony Romo will call the action.

How many fans can attend Super Bowl LV?
We’ll be seeing history made when the Buccaneers ‘host’ Super Bowl 55. They have become the first team in NFL history to play a Super Bowl in their home venue, as Raymond James Stadium will host this year’s title game.
After the Buccaneers had limited fan attendance this season due to COVID-19, the NFL is allowing 22,000 fans to attend Super Bowl LV.
The Buccaneers went 5-3 at home in the regular season, which included a 27-24 loss to the Chiefs in Week 12, so beating Brady in this stadium can be done. Will this homefield advantage actually help against a Chiefs team that’s already won in this stadium?
Will Mahomes get revenge on Brady?
The biggest story of Super Bowl 55 is going to be Mahomes vs. Brady II.
The first time these two faced off in the postseason came in that 2019 AFC title game when Brady’s Patriots walked it off in OT with Mahomes never touching the ball in the extra period. That is still the only playoff loss Mahomes has ever suffered in the NFL.
While Brady is currently regarded as the greatest QB of all-time, Mahomes is off to a fast start toward making that claim before his career is over. Already having made two Super Bowl appearances before his third season as a full-time starter even ends, Mahomes is the future of the NFL, and he looks primed to have a record-breaking career of his own.
But to be the man, you gotta beat the man.
Mahomes has a long hill to climb to ever surpass Brady as the GOAT, but beating him in the Super Bowl would be a major step forward.
If Brady wins, however, he’ll claim his seventh Lombardi Trophy, two of which will have come at Mahomes’ expense. That would further solidify Brady as the greatest and make it extremely difficult for anyone to ever top.
Can Tampa Bay’s suffocating defense slow down Mahomes?
Despite finishing the regular season with an 11-5 record, the Buccaneers entered the playoffs as the NFC’s No. 5 seed, which meant they’d very likely have to win three road games to make just the franchise’s second Super Bowl and first since 2003.
Only three teams in NFL history had ever won three road games to make the Super Bowl, one of which being the 2010 Packers led by Aaron Rodgers, who won his first and only Lombardi Trophy that season.
As the old saying goes, defense travels, and Tampa Bay’s has done that in a big way.
After dispatching Washington in the Wild Card Round, the Bucs suffocated the Saints in the Divisional Round, grabbing four turnovers and forcing Drew Brees into arguably his worst playoff game ever. New Orleans swept the regular-season series with Tampa Bay to win the NFC South, but no one has ever beaten Tom Brady three times in the same season, especially when he’s got a defense like this.
Then came the NFC Championship at historic Lambeau Field against a fellow future Hall of Fame QB in Aaron Rodgers. Though it was billed as a Rodgers - Brady clash, it was Tampa’s defense that stole the show, holding the Packers to just 26 points, sacking Rodgers five times, and forcing two turnovers, both of which were converted to touchdown.
Even more impressive was the Buccaneers defense allowing just seven points off of Brady’s three interceptions. Through three playoff games, they’ve allowed an average of 23 points per game, have forced seven turnovers and allowed just eight touchdowns.
This defense is the real deal, and they’ll need to keep playing like it to slow down the Chiefs’ loaded offense.
Will Brady win his first ring without Bill Belichick?
It’s been a magical season for Brady, who turned 43 prior to Week 1 and went on to equal that number in total touchdowns (40 passing, 3 rushing) during the regular season. He finished his first season in Tampa Bay with 40 touchdown passes (most ever by a player in his first season with a team) and 4,633 passing yards (second-most ever by a player in his first season with a team).
Brady, who already holds the NFL record for all-time playoff wins by one player, now has 33 to his name, 12 ahead of former teammate Adam Vinatieri with 21.
But this time around, Brady managed to accomplish something he’d never done in his Hall of Fame career: Win three road games to make the Super Bowl.
Can Brady now finish the deal and win his first Super Bowl without Bill Belichick? The two combined to win six during Brady’s time with the Patriots. When the team opted not to re-sign him this past offseason, many wondered if Brady could win a title without Belichick.
Now, Brady is one game away from further validating his status as the greatest QB of all time, even though he spent much of his career with arguably the greatest head coach of all time.
Will Antonio Brown play (and be effective) in the Super Bowl?
The Buccaneers managed to get by the Packers without the services of Antonio Brown, who was out with a knee injury suffered in the Divisional Round. The injury came just as Brown was establishing good chemistry with Brady, including two catches for 49 yards and a touchdown in the 31-23 Wild Card win over Washington.
Brown didn’t practice at all leading up to the NFC Championship, so for now, he looks questionable for the Super Bowl, even though he’ll get nearly two weeks to recover for it. Even if Brown plays doesn’t mean he’ll be healthy enough to make an impact. We’ve seen teams deploy injured receivers to effectively use as decoys, similar to what we saw the Saints essentially do with Michael Thomas in the Divisional Round (Thomas reportedly had a torn deltoid and other ligament damage).
Though he is no longer at Thomas’ level, Brown is still someone who will draw attention from the defense if he’s simply on the field. But to win a potential shootout with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ high-powered offense, the Bucs really need Brown to make an impact catching the ball.
It would also be quite the comeback story for Brown after his off-field issues appeared to have nuked his NFL career. He’s now one game away from hoisting his first Lombardi Trophy. And given his pending legal issues, he may not get another.
Can ANYONE stop Travis Kelce?
Travis Kelce has left no doubt he’s the best tight end in the NFL. He’s also in the process of having the greatest season a tight end has ever had.
After setting the single-season record for receiving yards by a tight end, Kelce is having a torrid postseason with 21 grabs for 227 yards and three scores in wins over the Browns and Bills.
Dating back to Week 8, Kelce has caught seven-plus passes in 10-straight games, an absurd rate for an All-Pro wide receiver, let alone a tight end.
Forget position labels. Kelce is establishing himself as one of the best pass-catchers in NFL history, and he has chance to further cement that belief with another Super Bowl-winning performance.
In the regular-season win at Tampa Bay, Kelce caught all eight of his targets for 82 yards in the 27-24 win. The Bucs defense will have to do better in the rematch to pull off the win.
Will Bruce Arians become the oldest head coach to ever win a Super Bowl?
It’s been a magical brief coaching career for Bruce Arians, who didn’t become a full-time NFL head coach until he was 60 when the Arizona Cardinals hired him in 2013 (he did go 9-3 as the interim head coach of the Colts in 2012 while Chuck Pagano recovered from cancer). He went 49-30 across five seasons with an NFC Championship Game berth in 2015 (lost to Panthers) before briefly retiring following the 2017 season.
Arians would unretire and take the Buccaneers head-coaching job in 2019. After a year behind 30-for-30 Jameis Winston, the Buccaneers managed to land Brady in the offseason after the Patriots opted not to re-sign him.
Now, Arians is coaching in his fourth Super Bowl and first as a head coach (he went to three as an assistant with the Steelers). He has a chance to become the oldest NFL head coach to ever win a Super Bowl, surpassing Bill Belichick doing it at age 66 in Super Bowl 53 (read more on the oldest coaches to ever win a title here).
How will Chiefs slow down Shaquil Barrett following Eric Fisher injury?
After a slow start in just his third trip to the playoffs, Shaquil Barrett reminded everyone why he’s one of the NFL’s best pass-rushers. Though he didn’t record a second in Tampa Bay’s first two playoff games, Barrett erupted for three sacks in the NFC Championship vs. the Packers, two of which came in the fourth quarter with his team clinging to a one-score lead. He chipped in two tackles for loss and four QB hits for good measure.
When the Chiefs and Bucs played in the regular season, Barrett managed to get one sack, two QB hits and one tackle for loss. While a solid outing, Tampa Bay needs Barrett to have a bigger impact to stop the Chiefs’ high-scoring offense.
Part of why Barrett didn’t go off in the first matchup was the Chiefs’ standout offensive line, which allowed the fifth-fewest sacks (24) in the regular season. A big part of that was left tackle Eric Fisher, a two-time Pro Bowler who’s one of the league’s best blindside protectors.
Unfortunately, Fisher suffered a major injury late in the Chiefs’ AFC Championship win over the Bills. The team announced it was an Achilles injury, and teammates were seen consoling him after the game, so it’s not looking good that he plays again this season.
If Fisher misses the Super Bowl, Mike Remmers is a suitable replacement (he currently has a solid 70.1 PFF grade compared to 80.0 for Fisher), but it’s still a downgrade that Tampa Bay will look to exploit in Round 2. and Barrett will be a big part of that.

How the Yankees Won Game 3 to Sweep the Twins
9th Inning: Yankees Advance to A.L.C.S.
It ended fairly quickly for Minnesota.
Sergio Romo got off to a good start in his second inning of work by retiring Edwin Encarnacion on a grounder to third, but then he began to unravel. Cameron Maybin hit a 348-foot homer to left, and Gleyber Torres doubled before stealing third with no throw. Gary Sanchez walked and Manager Rocco Baldelli had seen enough, pulling his veteran reliever for Trevor May, who promptly allowed a run-scoring single to Didi Gregorius. May then struck out both Gio Urshela and D.J. LeMahieu to end the half-inning.
Three more outs were not nearly enough for the Twins to erase a four-run deficit with Aroldis Chapman on the mound. The Yankees’ closer allowed a two-strike leadoff single to Marwin Gonzalez and walked C.J. Cron, but that was all Minnesota could muster. Chapman struck out Max Kepler on four pitches — getting three consecutive sliders past Minnesota’s leadoff batter — got some serious help on a diving catch by Gregorius on a liner by Jorge Polanco and finishing things off by freezing Nelson Cruz with a 99.4 mile-per-hour fastball for a called strike three, and the ballgame, and the series.
8th Inning: The Twins Get on the Board
There’s (a little) life in the Twins!
Sergio Romo got the crowd in Minnesota fired up with a 1-2-3 eighth inning, getting all three Yankees hitters to hit balls in the air that found their way into gloves. Then Eddie Rosario brought it to a frenzy with a 412-foot leadoff home run to center field to start the bottom half of the inning.
Zack Britton settled down quickly, retiring Mitch Garver on a grounder to short, but then had to leave with an ankle injury, setting up Aroldis Chapman to attempt a five-out save. Chapman had not been asked to throw more than an inning since June 25 of last season.
The first two of the five outs came easily enough. Chapman got Luis Arraez to line out to right and escaped the inning when Miguel Sano struck out on a 99.8 mile-per-hour fastball.
The Twins have one more inning to keep their season alive.
7th Inning: Yankees Tack on an Insurance Run
The Yankees have a 3-0 lead, that thanks to the team’s bullpen, feels even bigger.
Minnesota left its closer, Taylor Rogers, out for a second inning and he immediately gave up a leadoff double to Gleyber Torres. Rogers battled with Gary Sanchez in a 10-pitch at-bat that ended in Sanchez striking out swinging on a 94 mile-per-hour fastball. But the next batter, Didi Gregorius, attacked Rogers’s first pitch, sending it into right field and bringing Torres home for a 3-0 lead. Rogers recorded to induce an inning-ending 5-4-3 double-play from Gio Urshela, but he’d put his team in a deeper hole.

Phillies’ Bullpen Collapses In Another Frustrating Loss To National League’s Worst Marlins
MIAMI (AP) – Neil Walker homered and drove in three runs Saturday to help the Miami Marlins rally from a five-run deficit and beat the Philadelphia Phillies for the fifth consecutive time, 9-6. The Marlins fell behind 6-1 before starting their comeback when Walker snapped an 0-for-15 skid with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. He contributed an RBI single in Miami’s six-run seventh, and JT Riddle delivered a tiebreaking two-run double off Adam Morgan (2-3).
Morgan and Juan Nicasio each gave up three runs in one-third of an inning. Philadelphia starter Zach Eflin allowed three runs in six innings and was pulled by manager Gabe Kapler after throwing 89 pitches.
The Marlins have the worst record in the National League, but they’re 7-5 against the Phillies and will try to sweep them for the second weekend in a row Sunday.
Rookie Jordan Yamamoto, the first Marlins pitcher to win his first three career starts, had that streak end when he allowed four runs in four innings.
Jarlin Garcia (2-0) worked a scoreless seventh, and Sergio Romo pitched a perfect ninth for his 15th save.
Rookie Harold Ramirez had three of the Marlins’ 15 hits to hike his average to .316. Garrett Cooper added two hits and two RBIs.
Rhys Hoskins hit a two-run homer for the Phillies. Scott Kingery had two hits and two RBIs and scored a run.
THIEVERY
Bryan Holaday was twice robbed by the Phillies’ defense. Eflin missed a diving attempt to catch a popup near the first-base line but then collected the ball and tossed it for the out. Shortstop Jean Segura made a leaping catch of Holaday’s line drive with a man on to prevent a run.
SOUTH FLORIDA APATHY
The crowd of 14,774 was the largest this month at Marlins Park. At the halfway point in their season, the Marlins are averaging 9,348 fans per home game, which puts them on pace for the lowest average attendance in the majors since the Expos’ 7,935 in 2001.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Phillies: LF Jay Bruce (left elbow) was scratched from the starting lineup but was available to pinch-hit.
UP NEXT
Phillies: RHP Jake Arrieta (7-6, 4.33), who is scheduled to start the series finale, has allowed eight home runs in 27 2/3 innings this month.
Marlins: RHP Trevor Richards (3-8, 3.94) is tied for the National League lead in losses even though opponents are batting only .233 against him.

Lindor’s HR Helps Tribe Beat Twins.
Twins 2 Indians 4 W-Bieber (6-0) L-Alcala (1-1) SV-Hand (8)
The Minnesota Twins took Game 1, which was a low-scoring affair against the Indians at Progressive Field. The Twins bats faced a daunting task in Cy Young candidate Shane Bieber. The Twins offense did all they could, but it wasn’t enough tonight. The Indians drew first blood in the first inning this evening. Jose Ramirez lined a one-out single to left and stole second and third base. Carlos Santana singled him home and the Indians led 1-0 after an inning of play. The Twins would answer in the second against an erratic Shane Bieber. Miguel Sano and Marwin Gonzalez walked to start the inning then Luis Arraez hit an RBI single to center. Max Kepler hit a run-scoring single to right and the Twins led 2-1. Meanwhile, Rich Hill settled down and threw five solid innings, but the Twins bullpen struggled a bit in the sixth. Jose Ramirez led-off with a single to right to bring up Francisco Lindor. Lindor smoked a Jorge Alcala slider out to right for a two-run homer and Cleveland took a 3-2 lead. Carlos Santana walked and Tyler Naquin doubled him home to put the Indians up 4-2. Shane Bieber still fanned ten over six good innings and the Tribe bullpen did the rest. Oliver Perez had a clean seventh, James Karinchak had a scoreless eighth, and Brad Hand had a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up the save. The Indians evened the series and close within a game and a half of first place in the American League Central.
-Final Thoughts-Rich Hill eventually got on a roll tonight. He threw five innings and allowed one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Jorge Alcala struggled in sixth. He gave up three runs on three hits with a strikeout and a walk in an inning of work. Sean Poppen threw two hitless innings to save the bullpen. The Twins likely were with Taylor Rogers and Sergio Romo, who have thrown on consecutive days and wanted to stay away from Tyler Clippard, who was hit in his right arm on Sunday. The team scattered six hits tonight and hit 2-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The Twins left seven men on base. Tomorrow, Jose Berrios will face Mike Clevinger in the series finale from Progressive Field.

The best NFL Draft picks of the last decade, by round
Tumblr media
Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, and Jason Kelce worked out for the teams that drafted them.
Let’s take a look at the 2010s to see who emerged as the biggest success story from each round.
When the 2020 NFL Draft begins, teams across the league will be making decisions that could drastically affect their future. Draft selections teams have made over the years have helped franchises win division titles, playoff games, and Super Bowls.
This year’s draft will be no different — players who will one day be stars in the NFL can be found from Round 1 all the way to Round 7. But it does mark the first draft of a new decade. So before we begin the next 10 years of draft history, let’s take a look back at some of the best picks teams have made in each round of the last decade.
First round: Patrick Mahomes, QB, 2017
The Kansas City Chiefs saw their quarterback of the future and traded up to No. 10 to snag him. The rest, as they say, it history. In his first season as a starter in 2018, Mahomes took home the NFL MVP Award and led the Chiefs to a 12-4 record, before losing in the AFC Championship Game. Although he wasn’t able to replicate his 5,097-yard, 50-touchdown season the next year, he still managed to top himself with a come-from-behind Super Bowl victory against the 49ers.
At just 24 years old, Mahomes became the youngest player in NFL history to win both the league and Super Bowl MVP awards. Mahomes being this good when he’s still so young is what makes him worthy of getting the top spot.
Others considered (in order of when they were drafted)
Von Miller, OLB, 2011: Super Bowl 50 MVP, has 106 sacks in his career
Julio Jones, WR, 2011: Fastest player to ever reach 12,000 receiving yards in NFL history, currently has the highest average of receiving yards per game (96.2)
J.J. Watt, DE, 2011: Second player in NFL history to be a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, joining Lawrence Taylor
Aaron Donald, DT, 2014: Back-to-back Defensive POTY, holds the single-season sack record for an interior defensive lineman (20.5 in 2018)
Keep an eye on: Lamar Jackson, QB, 2018
Jackson is coming off an incredible 2019 season in which he won the NFL MVP Award. If he keeps playing like he did in his first full year as the Ravens’ starter, he could challenge Mahomes for the crown.
Second round: Rob Gronkowski, TE, 2010
The Patriots took Gronkowski with the No. 42 overall pick, and the tight end quickly became Tom Brady’s top weapon. Over his nine-year career with the Patriots, Gronkowski was a five-time Pro Bowler, four-time All-Pro, and three-time Super Bowl champion. He accounted for 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns, and owns the single-season record for most touchdown catches by a tight end (17 in 2011).
Injuries led to Gronk retiring after the 2018 season, but he’ll be a Hall of Famer one day soon. In the meantime, he’s keeping busy by doing things like winning WWE Championships.
Others considered:
Mitchell Schwartz, OT, 2012: 2018 All-Pro right tackle has started every game of his career, had an impressive streak of 7,894 consecutive snaps played
Bobby Wagner, LB, 2012: Led the league in total tackles in 2016 and 2019, has been a Pro Bowler six straight years and an All-Pro five of the last six
Le’Veon Bell, RB, 2013: Averaged more yards from scrimmage in his first four seasons than anyone in NFL history, fastest player to reach 8,000 yards from scrimmage (63 games)
Michael Thomas, WR, 2016: Has the most receptions and receiving yards in NFL history over his first four seasons, set the NFL’s single-season receptions record (149) in 2019
Keep an eye on: Deebo Samuel, WR, 2019
With 57 catches in 2019, Samuel topped Jerry Rice to become the 49ers’ all-time rookie receptions leader. He also he set a rookie receiver record in the Super Bowl for his 53 rushing yards against Kansas City.
Third round: Russell Wilson, QB, 2012
The Seahawks took a chance on the “smaller” Wilson, who stands at 5’11, and that bet has paid off. The No. 75 pick in 2012 earned the starting job right away and became an instant star. He’s never had a losing season in Seattle and has led the team to the playoffs every year except for 2017. Wilson hasn’t missed a single start through seven seasons, holding the franchise record for consecutive games started (128).
He got his first Super Bowl ring in the 2013 season, and would probably have two had Pete Carroll chosen to run the ball from the 1-yard line the following year against New England.
Others considered:
NaVorro Bowman, LB, 2010: Was a four-time All-Pro, recorded 798 tackles and forced 14 turnovers (9 FFs, 5 INTs) in eight seasons
Jimmy Graham, TE, 2010: Only tight end in NFL history with two 1,200-plus receiving yards and 10-plus receiving TD seasons (2011 and 2013)
Travis Kelce, TE, 2013: His four straight 1,000-plus seasons are an NFL record
Tyrann Mathieu, S, 2013: Two-time All-Pro, ranks second in the 2013 class in interceptions (17) and solo tackles (416)
Keep an eye on: Austin Hooper, TE, 2016
In four years with the Falcons, Hooper accounted for 2,224 yards and 16 touchdowns. The two-time Pro Bowler just signed a four-year, $42 million contract with the Browns, making him the league’s highest-paid tight end. We’ll have to see if he can carry over that production to Cleveland.
Fourth round: Dak Prescott, QB, 2016
Prescott quickly went from a fourth-round draft pick to Dallas’ starter. In his rookie season, Prescott took over for an injured Tony Romo in the preseason and played so well he never gave the starting job back. He won the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and set an NFL rookie record with a 104.9 passer rating.
Since entering the league, Prescott hasn’t missed a start for the Cowboys. In that time, he has more game-winning drives (14) than any quarterback except Drew Brees, and only Tom Brady has more wins (40). In 2019, Prescott finished second in the league in passing yards (4,902) and fourth in passing touchdowns (30).
Others considered:
Geno Atkins, DT, 2010: The most Pro Bowl nods of any defensive player in Bengals franchise history (8), only two-time All-Pro DT this decade who wasn’t a first-round pick
Everson Griffen, DE, 2010: Fourth in Vikings history with 74.5 sacks, four Pro Bowl nods in the last six seasons
Kirk Cousins, QB, 2012: Both Washington’s and the Vikings’ all-time leader in passer rating, ranks second in NFL history in completion percentage (66.9)
David Bakhtiari, OT, 2013: Started in all 106 games he’s appeared in as Aaron Rodgers’ left tackle, had the highest pass block win rate in 2019
Keep an eye on: Maxx Crosby, DE, 2019
Crosby suffered a broken hand during preseason, and only started 10 games as a rookie. Still, he led the Raiders with 10 sacks, 14 QB hits, and four forced fumbles. If he can keep it up, he could end up being the pass-rushing star the Raiders have been missing since trading Khalil Mack away.
Fifth round: Richard Sherman, CB, 2011
In the nine years since Sherman was drafted by the Seahawks, he’s solidified himself as one of the most dominant corners in the league. In the last decade, no player has more interceptions (35) than Sherman, who has also allowed an NFL-low completion percentage of 49.6 when targeted.
The five-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro corner was a key member of Seattle’s Legion of Boom defense. He signed with the 49ers in 2018, and negotiated his own contract with them. He made an extra $3 million in incentives due to his high level of play.
Others considered:
Kam Chancellor, S, 2010: Four-time Pro Bowler and Legion of Boom mainstay, forced 12 interceptions, nine fumbles, and four more turnovers in the playoffs
Stefon Diggs, WR, 2015: Led the league on deep targets in 2019, has two top-10 finishes in receiving TDs in the league
Tyreek Hill, WR, 2016: Four-time Pro Bowler has most punt return TDs since entering the league (4) and most total TDs of any WRs (41)
George Kittle, TE, 2017: Set an NFL record for the most receiving yards (1,377) by a tight end in a single season in 2018, first 49ers TE to have back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons
Keep an eye on: Michael Dickson, P, 2018
A native of Australia, Dickson didn’t start punting for American football until he was recruited by Texas. Seattle made a statement by trading up for the punter in the fifth round, but Dickson’s impressive tenure with the Longhorns justified the move. Dickson made the Pro Bowl during his rookie season and has dazzled with dropkicks. He downed a team-record 34 punts inside the 20-yard line in 2019, helping the Seahawks in the field position battle.
Sixth round: Jason Kelce, C, 2011
The Eagles took Kelce at 191 overall out of Cincinnati, and he’s been Philadelphia’s starting center ever since. He ranks first in consecutive starts (89) among active centers in the league, having not missed a start since 2014. Kelce is a three-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro.
Others considered:
Antonio Brown, WR, 2010: Named an All-Pro for four straight seasons (2014-17), also a two-time NFL receiving yards and receptions leader and the 2018 receiving touchdowns leader
Tyrod Taylor, QB, 2011: Pro Bowler with the Bills, joins Cam Newton and Russell Wilson as the only QBs with at least 8,000 passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards since 2015
Danny Trevathan, LB, 2012: Eight career INTs, six forced fumbles, 609 tackles in 77 starts (96 total games) with the Broncos and Bears
Latavius Murray, RB, 2013: 2015 Pro Bowler averages 908.8 total yards per season, ranks in top 10 in rushing TDs since entering the league
Keep an eye on: Gardner Minshew, QB, 2019
Minshew Mania was in full force in Jacksonville after the rookie QB came off the bench for Nick Foles in Week 1. Despite showing some inconsistencies, Minshew finished the season with 3,271 yards and 21 touchdowns. Jacksonville appears fully committed to Minshew as their starter, especially after trading Foles to the Bears. Minshew just needs to be more even keel in 2020 to improve upon his rookie season.
Seventh round: Trent Brown, OT, 2015
Brown, who was selected at 244th overall by the 49ers, has done pretty well for himself for a seventh-rounder. After starting 28 games for the 49ers in his first three seasons, he was traded to the Patriots and won a Super Bowl as their starting left tackle. He turned that season into a four-year, $66 million deal with the Raiders which made him the highest-paid tackle at the time. In his first season with the Raiders, he gave up just one sack at right tackle and made his first Pro Bowl.
Others considered:
Kurt Coleman, S, 2010: Has played in 146 games, his 21 career interceptions are more than any other seventh-rounder this millennium
Malcolm Smith, LB, 2011: Seahawks’ Super Bowl 48 MVP after accounting for 10 tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception returned for a touchdown against the Broncos
Jalen Mills, DB, 2016: Full-time starter for the Eagles since 2017, has 37 passed defended and four INTs
Harrison Butker, K, 2017: Led NFL in field goals made in 2019 (34), set a Chiefs record for most points scored by a kicker in a single season (143)
Keep an eye on: Auden Tate, WR, 2018
Tate was having a breakout season before getting injured in 2019. Still, he’s accounted for 610 yards and a touchdown in just 19 games with the Bengals. If Tate can stay healthy for a whole season, he could be a major part of Cincinnati’s offense.

Acuñar Homer Helps Braves Rally Past Miami in 12 Innings, 7-6
The Atlanta Braves' latest win over the Miami Marlins was so difficult to describe that Brian Snitker needed two hyphens for one word.
"Stick-to-itiveness," the Braves manager said.
UTC Announces Merger With Raytheon
Yep, it's in the dictionary, and next to it should be the box score from Atlanta's wild 12-inning comeback victory Sunday.
Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning and Matt Joyce delivered a tiebreaking RBI single in the 12th to help rally past Miami 7-6.
Testing Shows the Waves Are Sick, in Totally the Wrong Way
The Braves overcame a 5-1 deficit in the ninth against closer Sergio Romo. One run came home on a balk, and Acuña tied the score with one out by pulling an 0-1 slider for his 14th homer.
"Wow," a dazed Romo said to himself as Acuña circled the bases.
TV Show Helps Florida Cops Solve 3-Year-Old Cold Case Murder
"I was extremely excited," Acuña said through a translator. "This team fights every moment of the game until the 27th out is recorded."
Or the 36th out, in Sunday's case.
The Braves earned their seventh consecutive victory in Miami, a record in the series, and have won eight of the nine games between teams this year. They swept the Marlins for the 25th time, and for the second time in 2019.
"You get tired of dealing with those guys, honestly," Miami manager Don Mattingly said. "They're a tough club to beat."
Atlanta (36-29) climbed seven games above .500 for the first time. Miami (23-40) backslid after a recent 13-6 stretch.
"The Marlins were playing exceptional baseball," Joyce said. "It was pretty cool to battle back and steal that one from them late."
Both teams scored in the 10th, the Braves thanks to four consecutive two-out walks by Tyler Kinley. Ozzie Albies hit a one-out triple in the 12th off Adam Conley (1-6) and scored on Joyce's third hit of the game.
The clutch hits were a change for the Braves, who began the ninth batting 8 for 58 (.086) with runners in scoring position on their six-game trip.
"The guys kept coming and never quit," Snitker said. "It would have been easy just to cash it in."
Braves closer Luke Jackson blew a save in the 10th when Martin Prado hit an RBI double, but the right-hander limited the damage by striking out the next two batters to end the inning.
Dan Winkler (3-1) retired both batters he faced in the 11th. Josh Tomlin, the Braves' eighth pitcher, worked around a one-out single in the 12th for his first big league save — he had three saves in the minors, back in 2008 at Class A.
Austin Dean had three run-scoring hits for Miami, including a homer to lead off the first inning, and hiked his average from .183 to .219.
Atlanta's Max Fried gave up three runs in six innings and doubled home the Braves' first run in the third. Pablo Lopez allowed one run in six innings for Miami, lowering his home ERA to 1.78 in six starts this year.
The Braves improved to 47-23 at Marlins Park.
BLOWN LEAD
Romo blamed execution rather than pitch selection for his meltdown.
"I've got to be better than that," he said. "It definitely hurts."
Romo's ERA rose to 5.48. A shaky bullpen is one reason Miami has the worst record in the National League.
"We've had our share of these types of losses," Mattingly said. "These are the ones that hurt the worst."
WEB GEM
Second baseman Albies saved a run in the fifth. With runners at the corners and two out, he made a running backhanded grab of Brian Anderson's one-hopper up the middle, and whirled and threw to first for the out.
UP NEXT
Braves: They return home to open a four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, when RHP Kevin Gausman (2-5, 6.15) is scheduled to start.
Marlins: RHP Sandy Alcantara (3-5, 3.80) is scheduled to start Monday when Miami opens a three-game series at home against St. Louis. The Cardinals are 60-35 in Miami.

MLB roundup: Dodgers clinch playoff berth, tied atop NL West
The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched a playoff spot for the sixth consecutive season Saturday afternoon, using an RBI triple from Manny Machado to break an eighth-inning tie en route to a 10-6 victory over the host San Francisco Giants.
Sep 29, 2018; San Francisco, CA, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw (22) delivers against the San Francisco Giants during the fourth inning of a Major League Baseball game at AT&T Park. D. Ross Cameron-USA TODAY Sports
The Dodgers overcame a rare subpar effort from Clayton Kershaw to officially eliminate St. Louis from contention in the National League wild-card race. The Cardinals had won earlier in the day against the Chicago Cubs to temporarily stay alive.
Later in the evening, Los Angeles tied Colorado atop the NL West after the Rockies fell at home against Washington. The winner of the division will face Atlanta in the NL Division Series, while the runner-up will meet the Cubs or Milwaukee in the wild-card game on Tuesday night.
After the Giants had rallied into a 5-5 tie with a two-run fifth inning against Kershaw, the Dodgers got their go-ahead run in the eighth after Chris Taylor led off with a single off Mark Melancon (1-4). Two outs and a wild pitch later, Machado went the other way for a triple high off the wall in right field, easily plating Taylor with the go-ahead run.
Nationals 12, Rockies 2
Trea Turner and Juan Soto homered, and Washington knocked Colorado out of sole possession of first place in the National League West with a big win at Denver.
Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez homered for the Rockies, who suffered their first loss in nine games.
Rockies outfielder David Dahl went 0-for-3, ending his homer streak at five games.
Cardinals 2, Cubs 1
Right-hander Miles Mikolas remained unbeaten in September with eight strong innings, but St. Louis was later eliminated from postseason contention despite its victory at Chicago.
Matt Carpenter broke a 1-1 fifth-inning tie with an RBI single for the Cardinals, who were seeking a return to the postseason after a two-year absence.
With the loss, the Cubs are now tied with Milwaukee in the duel for the National League Central title. The Brewers edged Detroit later in the evening.
Brewers 6, Tigers 5
Christian Yelich hit two home runs, including a go-ahead solo shot, as Milwaukee moved into a first-place tie in the National League Central with a tight win over visiting Detroit.
Yelich, who drove in three runs, also homered in the series opener on Friday. His upper-deck blast off Daniel Stumpf (1-5) gave the Brewers a 6-5 lead in the seventh.
Erik Kratz drove in two runs, and Jonathan Schoop added two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Joakim Soria (3-4) tossed a scoreless inning of relief for his second victory in as many games. Jeremy Jeffress struck out the side in the ninth to notch his 15th save.
Yankees 8, Red Sox 5
Rookie Gleyber Torres hit the record-setting 265th home run of the season in the fourth inning for New York in a win at Boston.
Torres hit the homer into the right-center-field seats with two outs in the fourth inning when he drove a 1-1 fastball from Eduardo Rodriguez (12-5) into the Boston bullpen above the short right-center-field wall. Torres’ drive broke the previous record set by the 1997 Seattle Mariners, who were led by Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr.’s 56 homers.
Giancarlo Stanton and Greg Bird delivered RBI doubles before Torres homered as the Yankees reached 100 wins for the first time since 2009 and 20th time in team history. Stanton later added his 38th homer leading off the seventh against Steven Wright.
Mets 1, Marlins 0 (13 innings)
Longtime Mets third baseman David Wright played in his final major league game and went 0-for-1 with a walk before exiting in the top of the fifth of New York’s 13-inning win over visiting Miami.
Austin Jackson’s walk-off RBI double scored Michael Conforto and finally capped a marathon that lasted four hours and 14 minutes.
Wright jogged out to third base for the fifth, but manager Mickey Callaway exited the dugout to pull Wright for Amed Rosario. A teary-eyed Wright waved to all sections of Citi Field and hugged teammates standing in front of the dugout before heading down the steps. He exited for one more curtain call before disappearing into the clubhouse.
Twins 8, White Sox 3
Johnny Field doubled and singled in a six-run second inning, propelling Minnesota past Chicago at Minneapolis.
Right-hander Kyle Gibson (10-13) became a double-digit winner for the fourth time in the last five seasons, limiting the White Sox to one run and three hits in six innings. He struck out seven.
Gibson struck out Yoan Moncada and Yolmer Sanchez to start the game, bringing the White Sox’s single-season whiff total as a team to a record 1,572. Milwaukee had set the previous mark last year.
Astros 4, Orioles 3 (Game 1)
Carlos Correa lined a tiebreaking double in the top of the ninth inning to give Houston the victory over host Baltimore in the first game of a doubleheader.
The game was tied at 3-3 when the Astros started a two-out rally against Baltimore left-hander Sean Gilmartin (1-1). George Springer drew a walk, and Correa then lined a 3-1 pitch into the gap in right-center. Springer was able to score from first without drawing a relay throw.
Will Harris (5-3) threw a scoreless eighth inning and took the victory. Hector Rondon came on in the ninth and closed it for his 15th save.
Astros 5, Orioles 2 (Game 2)
Myles Straw, Brian McCann and Jake Marisnick all homered as Houston swept its doubleheader at Baltimore.
Astros starter Dallas Keuchel went just three innings in his final start of the season. He gave up one run and came away with a no-decision as the Astros apparently were getting ready for the playoffs and wanted others to throw — six pitchers worked overall in this game.
Brad Peacock (3-4) threw a scoreless fourth inning and earned the victory. Ryan Pressly took care of the ninth for his second save, and he now has a scoreless streak of 21 straight games.
Rays 4, Blue Jays 3
Austin Meadows hit the go-ahead home run in the seventh inning, C.J. Cron also had a solo shot and Tampa Bay edged Toronto at St. Petersburg, Fla.
Rays starter Blake Snell struck out 10 in five innings, allowing one run, three hits and four walks, but did not factor in the decision. A leading candidate for the American League Cy Young Award, the left-hander lowered his ERA to 1.89 for the season.
Sergio Romo struck out three to earn his 25th save of the season despite allowing a pinch-hit home run to Reese McGuire with one out in the ninth. Rays pitchers had 18 strikeouts.
Reds 3, Pirates 0
Michael Lorenzen pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, and Eugenio Suarez homered to lead Cincinnati past visiting Pittsburgh.
Relievers David Hernandez (1 1/3 innings), Jared Hughes (one inning) and Raisel Iglesias (one inning, 30th save) joined Lorenzen (4-2) in putting together a six-hit shutout for Cincinnati, which ended a six-game losing streak.
Pirates starter Jameson Taillon (14-10) struck out seven and walked none in six innings. He allowed three runs and seven hits. He finished his season with a string of 22 straight starts allowing three earned runs or fewer.
Phillies 3, Braves 0
Cesar Hernandez drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the seventh inning as Philadelphia snapped a nine-game losing streak with a shutout of visiting Atlanta.
The outburst was enough to give the win to starting pitcher Aaron Nola (17-6). The right-hander fired seven shutout innings, allowing two hits and four walks. He struck out eight.
Nola finished the season with 224 strikeouts. Hector Neris pitched the eighth inning, and Seranthony Dominguez worked the ninth to earn his 15th save in 19 opportunities.
Royals 9, Indians 4
Adalberto Mondesi smacked a tiebreaking three-run home run in the sixth inning, and Kansas City went on to beat visiting Cleveland.
Whit Merrifield went 2-for-4 with a two-run double to match his career-best hitting streak of 19 games. Merrifield also stole two bases to take over the major-league-lead with 44 as the Royals won for the fifth time in six games.
Jose Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a homer, and Melky Cabrera had two hits for the American League Central champion Indians.
Diamondbacks 5, Padres 4
Ildemaro Vargas hit his first major league home run and had three RBIs, and Zack Godley held the Padres to three runs over six innings, leading Arizona to victory at San Diego.
Vargas, who was a Triple-A Pacific Coast League All-Star, gave the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the second, then hit a two-run homer off Padres starter Jacob Nix (2-5) in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage.
Godley (15-11) yielded five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Yoshihisa Hirano pitched a perfect ninth to record his third save.
Athletics 5, Angels 2

Yanks Sweep Twins, Advance To ALCS.
Yankees 5 Twins 1 W-Green (1-0) L-Odorizzi (0-1) SV-Chapman (1)
The Minnesota Twins entered tonight having lost fifteen consecutive playoff games. That is a hard thing to do if you think about it. Tonight, the Twins looked to snap that streak against the hated Yankees at Target Field. The Yankees struck first in the second inning. With one out, Gleyber Torres lined a Jake Odorizzi cutter out to left for a solo blast. This put New York up 1-0 and Minnesota left the bases loaded in the bottom of the second. The Yankees got back to work in the third. Gio Urshela doubled to start the inning then went to third on a groundout. With two outs, Brett Gardner swatted a single to left, which scored Urshela. This gave the Yankees a two-run lead after three frames. Meanwhile, Luis Severino tossed four shutout innings and the Yankees bullpen did the rest. Tommy Kahnle and Chad Green got through the fifth. Green had a clean sixth and the Yankees added an insurance run in the seventh. Gleyber Torres led-off with a double. Two batters later, Didi Gregorius lined a run-scoring single to right and the Yankees had a 3-0 lead. The Twins finally got some offense going in the eighth. Eddie Rosario led-off and blasted a Zack Britton fastball out to center for a solo homer. This pulled the Twins within a run, but Britton retired Mitch Garver and Aroldis Chapman came on for the five-out save. He retired the two men he faced to get this game to the ninth. Cameron Maybin added to the Yankee lead when he belted a Sergio Romo slider out to left for a solo homer. Gleyber Torres followed with a double and Gary Sanchez walked. Trevor May came on and allowed an RBI single to Didi Gregorius. The Yankees had a 5-1 advantage as we headed into the bottom of the ninth. Marwin Gonzalez singled and CJ Cron walked to start the inning. Aroldis Chapman retired the next three men as the Twins were eliminated from the playoffs tonight. It was their sixteenth straight postseason loss.
-Final Thoughts- Jake Odorizzi had a solid start for the Twins tonight. He went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Taylor Rogers threw two decent innings and gave up a run with two strikeouts. Sergio Romo gave up two runs over 1 1/3 innings and Trevor May fanned two to get out of the ninth. Eddie Rosario led the team with three hits on the night. Luis Arraez added two more hits. The Twins hit 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left eleven men on base. This series was all about starting pitching and it’s unfortunate that the Twins had a rash of staring pitching problems in September. Jose Berrios and Jake Odorizzi were solid all year, but Michael Pineda was suspended, Kyle Gibson dealt with ulcerative colitis, and Martin Perez was very inconsistent. Rocco Baldelli didn’t leave Jose Berrios in Game 1 long enough and it costed the Twins in that game. Randy Dobnak was given the ball in a rough environment and didn’t fare too well. Jake Odorizzi pitched his heart out tonight and the offense doesn’t get him any runs. That’s how things go here in Minnesota. Congrats to the Twins on 101 wins and a fun season. More memories were made and I got to go to three Spring Training games, fifty regular season games, and my first playoff game ever. Next up, the Twins play the Gophers on February 21st to open up Spring Training. It’s not that far away folks!

Hedges hit a three-run homer, his fourth, to break the scoreless tie. Myers’ homer was his sixth in four games and eighth of the season.
Lauer (5-5) held the Dodgers scoreless on three hits and two walks for 8 2/3 innings before Max Muncy homered to left-center for the Dodgers’ lone run. Lauer finished with eight strikeouts — fanning both Matt Kemp and Logan Forsythe three times. Kirby Yates struck out Kemp for the final out.
Cubs 2, Giants 0
Addison Russell raced home from second base on a wild pitch and subsequent errant throw to break a scoreless tie in the seventh inning as visiting Chicago got a combined three-hit shutout from four pitchers in blanking San Francisco.
Jose Quintana (8-6) went the first six innings before Carl Edwards Jr., Justin Wilson and Steve Cishek tag-teamed to get the final nine outs, sending the Cubs to a ninth win in their past 11 games.
Derek Holland (5-8), an 11th-hour replacement when San Francisco elected to push scheduled starter Johnny Cueto back a day, was the hard-luck loser, allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings. Holland took a four-hit shutout into the seventh before Russell’s one-out double got the difference-making uprising going.
Angels 9, Mariners 3
Los Angeles got three hits apiece from Kole Calhoun and Andrelton Simmons at the top of the lineup, leading the way to an easy win over Seattle in Anaheim, Calif.
However, the win came at a price with the club potentially losing No. 1 pitcher Garrett Richards for an extended period of time. Richards, who was just activated from the disabled list on July 4 after missing three weeks with a strained left hamstring, had to leave Tuesday’s game with two outs in the third inning because of right forearm irritation. He will have an MRI exam on Wednesday.
Calhoun homered, singled twice, scored three times, drove in two and walked once from the leadoff spot to lead the Halos’ 15-hit attack. Four Angels relievers — Noe Ramirez (4-3), Cam Bedrosian, Jose Alvarez, Hansel Robles and Taylor Cole — combined to blank Seattle over the final 6 1/3 innings.

Major League Baseball roundup: Schoop
Jonathan Schoop’s bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning gave host Baltimore a 6-5 win over New York on Tuesday, the Orioles’ first walk-off win since Opening Day.

With the score 5-5, the Orioles got two runners on with one out against New York right-hander Dellin Betances (1-3). Manny Machado, who already had homered twice and was 3-for-4, was intentionally walked. Mark Trumbo struck out, but Schoop followed with a single just past first base to give the Orioles their second win in three games.
It was the first time Betances had allowed a run since May 23, a span of 18 consecutive scoreless appearances and 19 2/3 innings. Zach Britton (1-0) got the win after a scoreless ninth inning.
Greg Bird collected four RBIs for the Yankees, and Didi Gregorius had three hits.
Astros 6, A’s 5 (11 innings)
Kyle Tucker scored on an 11th-inning throwing error by Oakland catcher Jonathan Lucroy, giving host Houston a wild victory.
After the Athletics fashioned a four-run, ninth-inning rally to pull even, Stephen Piscotty homered for a fourth straight game, belting a two-out solo home run to left in the 11th off Collin McHugh (5-0) to provide Oakland its first lead of the game at 5-4. But the Astros rallied against All-Star Blake Treinen in the bottom half.
After the first two Astros reached in the 11th, Josh Reddick scored on a fielder’s choice grounder from Tony Kemp when Lucroy couldn’t handle the throw home from shortstop Marcus Semien. Two batters later, Alex Bregman eluded the tag of Lucroy after his swinging bunt rolled fair mere feet from home plate, and when Lucroy attempted to retire Bregman at first, his throw sailed wide.
Red Sox 8, Rangers 4
Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run triple to cap a five-run third inning for Boston en route to victory against visiting Texas.
Jackie Bradley Jr. and Andrew Benintendi each had RBI doubles in the frame and Mitch Moreland added an RBI single for the first of his two RBIs on the night for Boston, which has won eight straight games.
Rougned Odor hit a solo home run and Joey Gallo ripped a two-run double for Texas, which has dropped seven of nine.
Reds 7, Indians 4
Joey Votto hit a three-run double on a 3-2 count with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to give Cincinnati the shocking win after a seven-run ninth inning at Cleveland.
Cody Allen (2-4) took over with a 4-0 lead in the ninth and left with the advantage 4-3. Dan Otero replaced Allen and faced Votto, who lined a bases-clearing double to right field. Eugenio Suarez’s second single of the inning brought Votto home to cap the seven-run outburst.
The Indians, who lost their fourth in a row, wasted eight scoreless innings by Trevor Bauer. The right-hander allowed three hits, walked four and struck out 12. It was his seventh consecutive quality start with eight or more strikeouts and no homers allowed, the longest such streak in the live-ball era (since 1920), per STATS LLC.
Blue Jays 6, Braves 2
Russell Martin drove in the go-ahead run in a five-run eighth inning as visiting Toronto took advantage of poor Braves defense to win at Atlanta.
The Atlanta infield had three errors overall, including two in the decisive eighth inning. The team’s infielders had not committed an error since June 27.

The Toronto uprising came against A.J. Minter (3-2), who gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits in one-third of an inning, and Shane Carle, who allowed one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings. Both starting pitchers, Toronto’s Marcus Stroman (2-6) and Atlanta’s Julio Teheran, pitched into the seventh and allowed one run each.
Brewers 8, Marlins 4
Christian Yelich, in just his second major league game as a visitor at Marlins Park, drove in four runs to lead Milwaukee past Miami.
Yelich, traded by the Marlins to the Brewers in the offseason, went 3-for-5 and drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a single in Milwaukee’s four-run second inning. He added a two-run double in the ninth. Milwaukee’s Travis Shaw hit his 16th homer of the season, a solo shot in the eighth.
Jhoulys Chacin (8-3) allowed seven hits, three walks and four runs in 5 2/3 innings. Marlins rookie Pablo Lopez (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs in six innings.
Phillies 7, Mets 3
Enyel De Los Santos won his major league debut by tossing 6 1/3 solid innings, and Maikel Franco hit a three-run homer to lead Philadelphia to a victory at New York.
The Phillies have won the middle two games of the four-game series and eight of their last 10. The Mets have lost four of five and 15 of 20.
De Los Santos (1-0) won a duel of pitchers making their debuts. He allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six. Drew Gagnon (0-1) allowed six runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three over 4 2/3 innings.
Nationals 5, Pirates 1
Anthony Rendon hit a two-run homer, and Washington added three runs in the sixth inning to win at Pittsburgh.
Daniel Murphy went 4-for-4 with a run, and Juan Soto went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the Nationals, who broke a two-game slide and won for the fourth time in six games to climb a game over .500.
The Pirates, whose seven hits were all singles, saw their two-game winning streak end and lost for the sixth time in eight games.
Cardinals 14, White Sox 2
Dexter Fowler hit a grand slam as part of a seven-run sixth inning, and visiting St. Louis romped past Chicago.
The Cardinals racked up 16 hits to back the strong pitching of All-Star Miles Mikolas, who allowed two runs on three hits in six innings. Mikolas (10-3) struck out six and walked one. Kolten Wong led the Cardinals with four hits, including a homer, and Jose Martinez added three hits and two RBIs.
Dylan Covey (3-5) surrendered five runs, four earned, and nine hits in five-plus innings. The loss was the sixth straight for the reeling White Sox, who managed just five hits off four St. Louis pitchers.
Rays 5, Tigers 2
Wilson Ramos blasted a three-run homer to highlight a five-run third inning, and five Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a five-hitter in downing visiting Detroit.
Willy Adames and Kevin Kiermaier each drove in a run and scored another. A trio of Rays pitchers — starter Ryne Stanek, Jose Alvarado and Jaime Schultz — tossed two scoreless innings apiece. Alvarado (1-3) was credited with his first major league victory. Sergio Romo got the last out for his 10th save.
Slideshow (13 Images)
Detroit averted its 12th shutout of the season by scoring two runs in the ninth. The Tigers have lost three straight and 17 of their past 21 games.
Royals 9, Twins 4
Adalberto Mondesi homered and drove in a career-high four runs, and Brian Flynn pitched four innings of one-hit of relief for his first win of the season as Kansas City snapped a season-worst, 10-game losing streak in beating Minnesota at Minneapolis.
It was just the fifth win in 33 games for the Royals. Kansas City also snapped a 30-game streak of not scoring more than five runs in a game, the longest by an American League team since the 1972 Texas Rangers had a 33-game slump — a year before the designated hitter rule was adopted by the AL.
Alex Gordon added a two-run homer in the ninth. Whit Merrifield had two doubles and scored a pair of runs while extending his hitting streak to 12 games for the Royals.
Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 3
David Peralta hit a go-ahead homer in Arizona’s four-run seventh inning, and the Diamondbacks rallied to beat Colorado in Denver.
A.J. Pollock and Nick Ahmed also homered, and Randall Delgado (2-0) got the win in relief of starter Patrick Corbin. Brad Boxberger pitched the ninth for his 22nd save.
Nolan Arenado went deep and Tyler Anderson struck out eight in six innings of one-run ball in a no-decision for the Rockies.
Padres 4, Dodgers 1
Rookie Eric Lauer came within an out of a shutout, and Austin Hedges and Wil Myers homered in a four-run fifth inning as host San Diego beat Los Angeles.
Hedges hit a three-run homer, his fourth, to break the scoreless tie. Myers’ homer was his sixth in four games and eighth of the season.
