Erin Talcott - the first female 50-Km Race Walker in an IAAF competition

Here is a photo of the USA athlete setting a milestone in the course of equality in sports.

Last Sunday, in Rome, she was the only women to compete amongst the men in the World Race Walking Team Championships, achieving a 40th place, in 4:51:08.

Even though there hadn't been yet an IAAF competition with the women being allowed to participate in the longer race-walking event, the Personal Best of the American sportswoman is a somewhat faster 4:33:22.

While there isn't an intensification of competition on the women's side of the event, the World Record will belong to Sweden's Monica Svensson, who registered 4:10:59 back in 2007.

Women will compete in the 50km Race Walk for the first time

Athletics is one step closer to gender equality by the introduction of the first competition of women's 50 kilometres race walk in the IAAF calendar.

Even though the female side of the distance had been approved in August 2015, it will be during the World Race Walking Team Championships, taking place in Rome (7-8 May), that the distance will be contested in official competitions under the sign of IAAF.

Because of this, the winner of the competition in the Italian capital will set the first official World Record in the event.

After the Pole Vault and Hammer throw being recognized as events with official World Records in 1994, the longest race walk was the last being disputed solely by men.

Despite this, there is still a number of events in which women face different conditions, including the implement weights, the height of hurdles and the number of disciplines during the combined events.
