Hooded Justice
I recently re-watched Watchmen (2019) with my roommate, and she said something really clever that changed my mind on a hang-up I had. While I loved Watchmen (2019), I was originally a bit put off at the retcon of Hooded Justice’s origin story. Originally Rolf Muller, HJ was originally a Nazi sympathizer at the very least, and I felt it was strange to change the Nazi white supremacist character into a Black man. This Extraordinary Being (Ep 6) was perhaps one of the greatest episodes of television of all time, so I didn’t care too much, but I did wonder why they didn’t pick literally any other character.
However, my roommate loved the change, and pointed out to me that HJ is, in the Watchmen universe, the first Superhero. If the first Superhero is a Nazi, then the origins of the Superhero are inherently fascist. If the first Superhero was a Black man dealing with systemic racism, then the origins of the Superhero inherently lie in the experience of the marginalized. In real life, the Superhero genre was created by Jewish immigrants, fleeing antisemitism in Europe. William Reeves more accurately reflects the origin of the Superhero than Rolf Muller.
Furthermore, while I think Alan Moore is a brilliant writer who was majorly screwed over by DC, and I have a lot of respect and sympathy for him, his take about Superhero’s being inherently fascist was totally ahistorical and insulting. My roommate made me realize that William Reeves is the perfect rebuttal to that idea. I’m really glad I re-watched it with her.

I really wish HBO Watchmen fans would refer to the show's version of Hooded Justice by his real name because the comic's Hooded Justice was an outright Nazi and as a Jewish comic fan it's pretty uncomfortable to see people praising that name.

Watchmen Spoilers but I’ve seen a ridiculous number of people lately who seem to believe that the Hooded Justice reveal is a retcon of his “original comics identity” which was, like, not established. People specifically say he was nazi strongman Rolf Muller, which was never actually confirmed (or even implied by a reliable source, unless you consider the in-universe equivalent of Alex Jones’ InfoWars a reliable source) in the original comics! And even beside that, his perceived support of the Nazis and his perceived insistence on superheroes remaining apolitical (also coming from an unreliable narrator) was specifically retained in the series, although instead of being left to assume they were meant at face value, they were explained specifically as very pointed barbs at another character’s cowardice and racist leanings. It’s not a “retcon” unless you actually change something, if everything that’s actually been firmly established stands as-is, then it’s not retroactive continuity, it’s just... continuity. Like, the reveal that the White Supremacist newspaper was wrong when they said the Seminal Superhero was a White Supremacist, that’s not a retcon, that’s just like... something you should’ve assumed if you have the basic literacy skills to translate words on a page into thoughts in your brain

The Judge of All the Earth
Tumblr media
WATCHMEN #3 NOVEMBER 1986 BY ALAN MOORE, DAVE GIBBONS AND JOHN HIGGINS
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS (FROM DC DATABASE)
Doctor Manhattan is having problems with his relationship with Laurie when he multiplies himself and she finds out that 'one of him' had been working while she was being romantic with another. Laurie walks out on Manhattan, going to meet up with Dan Dreiberg.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Manhattan's ex-wife Janey Slater is giving an interview with a news editor of the Nova Express. She states that she has cancer that she presumably received through connection with Manhattan.
Manhattan gets dressed and transports from his home to his television interview where he meets up with a government official named Forbes telling him what to, and what not to say. One of his questions that he cannot say is about his involvement with the Russians in Afghanistan. Then, one of the audience members is Doug Roth of Nova Express who ask Manhattan of his relationships with his colleague Wally Weaver, Slater, and his former nemesis Edgar Jacobi, if he knew that all of them had a fatal form of cancer, among others. Forbes quickly intervened and stopped the interview, but while he and Manhattan were leaving Manhattan became overwhelmed by questions. A very distressed Manhattan yells "I said leave me alone!" and transported everyone outside of the building.
Tumblr media
Laurie meets up with Dan who gave her some coffee and they talked about her troublesome relationship and where she will stay that night. She decided on a hotel and walked him to Hollis Mason's place, but while walking through an alleyway they were almost mugged by a gang of knot-tops. They take out the entire group. Leaving the alleyway, Laurie decides to go find a hotel and to leave Dan alone. Once arriving at Hollis' place, Hollis shows Dan the interview of Manhattan's incident on television.
Manhattan arrives back at his home to find out that it is being quarantined. He decides that he is leaving, telling a soldier to leave a message for Laurie and his superiors. He said he is going to Arizona, and then Mars. He goes to the Gila Flats test base in Arizona, where he took a picture of himself and Janey Slater many years ago at a carnival. On Mars he explores in a childish excitement and then finds a rock to sit on.
Laurie goes back to the base to find that everything is being taken away by military personnel in hazmat suits and she is told by Forbes that she is ordered to undergo a cancer scan and is ask about whether she has put Manhattan in emotional stress. Unaware of Manhattan's incident, she is offended by Forbes for considering herself responsible for something until the man, deeply exasperated, snaps to her that she is no longer welcome to the base, since his superiors believe that Manhattan is not coming back in which his absence has severe global consequences.
The next day, Dan awakes from his bed to find Rorschach has broken into his home (again), whom shows Dan a newspaper with the front page of Manhattan's departure from Earth. This news also makes Rorschach being more convinced of his mask killer theory.
Tumblr media
That night, the news vendor receives the evening edition and is shocked to read from the headlines. Anxiously, he gives the kid a copy of Tales of the Black Freighter for free, and even his cap. The headline he read is "Russians Invade Afghanistan".
Tumblr media
Tales of the Black Freighter A young mariner is the sole survivor of a battle with pirates and wakes up on a deserted island where dead bodies are piled next to him. The mariner recalls the disaster of the attack and about thinks about the pirates of the "black freighter" bearing down on his home and his unsuspecting family. He then begin the arduous task of burying his shipmates throughout the entire day.
UNDER THE HOOD
Chapter V Hollis described the 1950's as cold and bleak, both for himself and for masked adventurers in general. The Minutemen have become irrelevant in society as their exploits were being reported less frequently and treated as a joke. Sally Jupiter have her daughter Laurie in 1949, when her marriage began to deteriorate. Her marriage ended in 1956, and since then Sally has been successful in raising her daughter. The Comedian remained the only member of the Minutemen who has been treated seriously in the eyes of the public partly due to his government connections, and was turning into a patriotic symbol.
During the height of the McCarthy era, the remaining active masked adventurers testified before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, and were forced to reveal their identities. The Comedian was excepted because of his allegiance. This doesn't present any immediate problems for most of the Minutemen, such as Captain Metropolis' outstanding military record and Hollis' service in the police force. But Mothman met with more difficulty due to his associations with left-wing friends during his student days. He was eventually cleared, but the investigations were both lengthy and ruthless, and Hollis speculates that the pressure may have prompted his drinking problem that later contributed to his mental ill-health.
Hooded Justice remained the only masked adventurer who refused to testified, on the grounds that he was not prepared to reveal his true identity to anyone. When pressed, he vanished. Hollis presumed that the Hooded Justice retire rather than revealing his identity. But almost a year after Hooded Justice vanished, the New Frontiersmen publish an article about the disappearance of a circus strongman named Rolf Muller, who quit his job at the height of the Senate Subcommittee hearings. Three months later, a badly decomposed body was found washed up on the coast of Boston. The body was identified as Muller's that was shot through the head. The article further stated that Muller, whose family was East German, had been on the run for fear of being uncovered during the Communist witch hunts, and implied that Muller was executed by his Communist superiors. Hollis speculated that Muller and Hooded Justice are the same person, but find this troubling to accept his fellow costume fighter was a spy, and leaving him to wonder who had killed them. This has took Hollis a long time to realize to accept it as a mystery.
Another problem that contributed to the downfall of costumed adventurers was the absence of costumed criminals. These criminals turned in their costumes along with their careers, but some opted for a less extroverted and more profitable approach as "ordinary men in business suits" who ran drug and prostitution rackets.
By March of 1960, Doctor Manhattan came, whose presence make the term "masked hero" and "costume adventurer" obsolete. Hollis recalled how the public reacted with feelings of disbelief of an actual superhuman being with incredible powers. The presence of Manhattan made Hollis to conclude that the regular heroes are replaced. In the closing months of 1958, Ozymandias first appear after busting a major opium and heroin smuggling racket, and earned a reputation amongst the criminal fraternity for his boundless and implacable intelligence and a large degree of athletic prowess.
Hollis first met Manhattan and Ozymandias during a Red Cross relief in June of 1960. His encounter with Manhattan was described as a strange experience which lasts for a short time until it almost seems normal. It was then that Hollis decided to retire his heroics and opened his own auto repair business. Soon, he was visited by a young admirer who proposed to borrow his identity as the new Nite Owl. After visiting his admirer's home and seeing his technology that will be use on the war on crime, Hollis permitted. Hollis also learned of Sally Jupiter's daughter, who was also carrying on her mother's legacy. Hollis conclude that the super-hero has become a part of American life for better, or for worse.
REVIEW
Tales of the Black Freighter is still the thing about Watchmen that I don’t like. I understand “why it’s there”, but it doesn’t make it more entertaining to me.
There is one thing that I can take home of that, and it’s the relationship between the news vendor and the young reader. When I started reading comics, newsstands was the only accessible place for kids to get them. As a result, you would cultivate some sort of friendship with your local news vendor. That is very similar to what we’ll see during Watchmen. It is interesting that this comic book came out through the direct market (I assume because of its content, quality and lack of bar code), so that relationship is a bit ironic.
Narration in this issue is sometimes coming from a comic-book, and other times it’s other people’s dialogues. Usually when people talk, we see something that tends of be the opposite of what they’re saying.
This is the first time we see full frontal nudity in the comic. According to the annotated version, this may very well be the first time in a mainstream comic-book... but I hardly doubt that. Even for mainstream, this is 1986.
To be continued...

Watchmen Timeline Explained
https://ift.tt/2M1reVY
We've made a complete and chronological timeline of the events of Watchmen, from the original book to the HBO show. It...wasn't easy.
facebook
twitter
tumblr
This article contains nothing but spoilers for Watchmen, both the book and the HBO series.
HBO’s Watchmen is non-linear and occasionally confusing (or “infuriating” as Dr. Manhattan puts it) in its use of time. The book from which it draws inspiration is similarly non-linear and occasionally confusing in its use of time. To make matters even trickier, the show expands upon and even retcons events that take place or are alluded to in the book.
So what’s a fan to do? Why, make a complete and chronological Watchmen timeline, of course! That’s a perfectly sane and normal activity for any well-adjusted adult, and it certainly didn’t give me any severe migraines or make me question my own perception of time at any point. Nope. None at all.
read more - Watchmen: Unanswered Questions We Have From the Finale
To compile this complete Watchmen timeline, I only used stated dates from the book by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, dates and events from the show itself, dates noted in HBO’s official supplemental materials, Peteypedia, and the occasional date from actual real life (for example, the birth of lawman Bass Reeves). I don’t consider DC’s Before Watchmen prequels canon (and apparently neither does this show) but I DID cheat and use dates from some long out-of-print Watchmen roleplaying game supplements that Alan Moore consulted on to date a couple of events from the book.
Now, let's get to work...
July 1838 - Bass Reeves born.
1908 - Nelson Gardner (Captain Metropolis) born.
1915 - Will Reeves born.
1918 - Obie Williams, Will Reeves’ father and the great-grandfather of Angela Abar, serves during World War I. It’s here he picks up (and keeps) a German propaganda flier indicating that there’s more racial equality in Germany than there is in the United States. He carries it with him until passing it on to Will.
May 25, 1921 - Trust in the Law, a silent movie about Bass Reeves, premieres.
May 31 - June 1, 1921 - The Tulsa Race Massacre takes place. Will Reeves and June Abar escape Tulsa.
1936 - Hans Osterman takes his son Jon from Germany to England to escape the rise of the Nazis. There they stay with other refugees in an English manor home, sheltered by a kind young couple, who later inspire Dr. Manhattan to create life in their image.
Nelson Gardner honorably discharged from the Marines.
1938 - Will Reeves (Hooded Justice) and Hollis Mason (Nite Owl I) graduate from the New York Police Academy.
Spring 1938 - Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman is published. Will Reeves and others take notice. The arrival of superheroes as a publishing phenomenon inspires a number of people to put on costumes and fight crime. Ironically, the presence of real world superheroes ends up killing them as a viable genre in comic books, where other genres such as pirate stories instead become dominant in the form and pop culture.
Oct. 1938 - After intervening in a mugging after he had been the victim of a racist attack by his police office colleagues, Will Reeves makes his costumed debut as Hooded Justice.
1939 - Hollis Mason debuts as Nite Owl. The Silhouette, The Comedian, Silk Spectre I, Captain Metropolis, Dollar Bill, and Mothman, all inspired by the exploits of Hooded Justice and Nite Owl, make their crimefighting debut shortly after.
July 2, 1939 - Adrian Veidt born.
Mid 1939 - The Minutemen form.
March 21, 1940 - Walter Joseph Kovacs (Rorschach) born.
Oct. 2, 1940 - Edward Blake sexually assaults Sally Jupiter (Silk Spectre I) after a meeting of the Minutemen. Hooded Justice intervenes and severely beats Blake. Blake is expelled from the Minutemen shortly after.
1942 - Nelson Gardner (Captain Metropolis) puts crime fighting career on hold to serve in the Marines during World War II. The Comedian joins the war effort, beginning a long career as a government agent and super soldier.
Sept. 18, 1942 - Dan Dreiberg (Nite Owl II) born.
Aug. 7, 1945 - Atomic Bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Jon Osterman’s life path changes from being a watchmaker to a nuclear physicist.
1946 - Minutemen member The Silhouette is outed as a lesbian in the press, kicked off the team, and subsequently murdered by an old enemy.
1947 - Sally Jupiter quits Silk Spectre career.
1948 - Sally Jupiter and Edward Blake conceive Laurie Juspeczyk (FBI Agent Laurie Blake on the show) in a secret, consensual sexual encounter.
Autumn, 1948 - Jon Osterman accepted to Princeton.
1949 - Laurie Juspeczyk (FBI Agent Laurie Blake) born, the Minutemen disband.
Dec. 1, 1949 - Judd Crawford born.
1952 - Will Reeves (Hooded Justice) uncovers the Cyclops mass hypnosis plot and executes several of their members.
1954 - The remaining members of the Minutemen are called before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee and asked to reveal their identities in testimony. Hooded Justice disappears after refusing to reveal his identity to HUAC.
1955 - Circus strongman Rolf Muüller found dead. While this fact was never made public, Muller was murdered by Edward Blake, who believed him to be Hooded Justice, in an act of revenge for the beating he received at HJ’s hands in 1940.
J. David Keene gifts Judd Crawford’s father with a replica of George Catlin’s painting, “Martial Feats of Comanche Horsemanship.”
1956 - Sally Jupiter divorces Laurence Schexnayder. Adrian Veidt begins traveling the world and preparing for his crime fighting career.
1958 - Adrian Veidt makes costumed debut as Ozymandias.
Spring 1958 - Jon Osterman graduates Princeton with a PhD in Atomic Physics.
May 12, 1959 - Jon Osterman begins work at Gila Flats, site of the intrinsic field generator, and meets Janey Slater.
August 1959 - Jon Osterman trapped in Intrinsic Field Generator and torn to atoms.
November 1959 - Jon Osterman “returns” as Dr. Manhattan after reassembling his physical form on the atomic level.
March 2, 1960 - Dr. Manhattan’s existence revealed to the world.
May 1960 - DC Comics begins publishing Tales of the Black Freighter, a pirate comic by Max Shea and Joe Orlando.
June 17, 1960 - Dr. Manhattan meets Adrian Veidt (Ozymandias) for the first time.
May 16, 1962 - Nite Owl I (Hollis Mason) retires.
1963 - Under the Hood, Hollis Mason’s memoir about the Minutemen and his time as Nite Owl is published. Among other things, this popularizes the (incorrect) theory that Rolf Müller was actually Hooded Justice.
March 20, 1964 - Walter Joseph Kovacs begins crimefighting as Rorschach
1965 - Rorschach partners with Nite Owl II
April 14, 1966 - Nelson Gardner (Captain Metropolis) tries and fails to put together a new superhero team, the Crimebusters. Dr. Manhattan first meets Laurie Juspeczyk. Laurie first meets Edward Blake.
May 1966 - Dr. Manhattan begins romantic relationship with Laurie Juspeczyk (Silk Spectre II).
Aug. 26, 1966 - Janey Slater leaves Dr. Manhattan after learning of his affair with Laurie Juspeczyk.
1967 - Adrian Veidt exposes “a plot by rogue right wing extremists in the US military to test biological weapons on the citizens of Nairobi and the surrounding areas.”
1968 - Adrian Veidt begins formulating his master plan to bring about world peace.
March 1971 - Dr. Manhattan intervenes in Vietnam and meets Edward Blake.
June 1971 - The United States declares victory in Vietnam, marking the first VVN night. Edward Blake murders a vietnamese woman carrying his child while Dr. Manhattan stands by and does nothing.
1972 - Fogdancing by Max Shea, an important and influential work of literature in the Watchmen universe, is published.
Aug. 9, 1974 - Nelson Gardner killed in automobile accident in New York City.
1975 - Constitutional amendment abolishing Presidential term limits passed, allowing Richard Nixon to seek re-election. Ozymandias retires and reveals his identity to the public. Rorchach’s activities become more brutal in the wake of a kidnapping case he solved.
March 3, 1975 - Will Reeves is presented with the contents of Nelson Gardner’s will in New York City. Will Reeves is working at a movie theater in Harlem at the time.
1976 - Judd Crawford marries Jane Lestley. Angela Abar born.
Nov. 22, 1976 - Calvin Jelani born.
June 1977 - A superhero exploitation movie called Sister Night is released in Vietnam. It would later go on to influence young Angela Abar.
Aug. 3, 1977 - Nationwide police strike and civil unrest leads to the passage of the Keene Act, outlawing masked vigilante activity. While Silk Spectre and Nite Owl II retire in light of the new law, Rorschach refuses.
1979 - The Comedian frees American and Canadian hostages from Iranian “anti-Manhattanite extremists.”
1980 - Judd Crawford joins the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department
Early October 1985 - Edward Blake (The Comedian) drunkenly confesses to Edgar William Jacobi (Moloch) the details he has learned of Adrian Veidt’s plan.

Oct. 31, 1985 - Nite Owl and Silk Spectre II break Rorschach out of jail. Hollis Mason (Nite Owl I) is murdered by a gang of Knot-Tops who believe that he’s the same Nite Owl responsible for breaking Rorschach out of prison.
Nov. 1, 1985 - Nite Owl and Rorschach head to Karnak, the Antarctic retreat of Ozymandias, to confront Adrian Veidt about his plans.
On Mars, Laurie Juspeczyk convinces Dr. Manhattan to intervene on behalf of  humanity, and learns the truth about her parentage.

There, he tangles with tough guys Neville Brand and Lee Van Cleef, who are as deep in the dark as he is, and falls for good girl Coleen Gray—under the suspicious eye of her cop father (Preston Foster). The first pairing of noir dream team Payne and director Phil Karlson (99 River Street) remains one of the great capers of the 1950s. Presented in 35mm

Don't miss your chance to see this small-town powder keg explode on the big screen. Presented digitally

FOUR WAYS OUT
LA CITTÀ SI DIFENDE
7:15 PM
The heist drama, Federico Fellini-style. The Maestro has story and screenplay credit on this nearly forgotten film about a quartet of amateur thieves who successfully execute a daring mid-match robbery at a soccer stadium. They must separate to evade the police, but escaping their personal demons proves far more difficult. A humanist crime thriller that's equal parts film noir and neo-realism, featuring a young Gina Lollobrigida. Germi's dynamic direction earned La città si difende the Best Italian Film award at the 1951 Venice Film Festival. Presented in 35mm
Italy, 1951. Società Italiana Cines. [Cinecittà]. 74 min. Screenplay by Federico Fellini, Tullio Pinelli, Giuseppe Mangione, and Pietro Germi, story by Federico Fellini, Tullio Pinelli, and Luigi Comencini Produced by Carlo Civallero. Directed by Pietro Germi
BIG DEAL ON MADONNA STREET

With turns from some of the great names of Italian cinema—Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman, Claudia Cardinale, Renato Salvatori—forget the remakes and feast on the original! Presented digitally

ĐT Đức đã gây thất vọng lớn ở VCK World Cup 2018.
