Marielle de Dzemael
"Blood must only be shed for a worthy purpose. Killing just for the sake of killing, causing needless suffering, wanton destructionā€”such things cannot be borne. That is why I do this. I put men and beasts like that down to keep them from preying on those who don't stand a chance at defending themselves."
The trueborn daughter of a ā€œtrueborn" (actually a bastard) son of House Dzemael, trained as a Reaper by Drusilla. She left Ishgard when she was 19, angry at the pointlessness of the war and frustrated with the strict rules and petty politicking of the High Houses. She wandered Eorzea aimlessly, ultimately falling in with Drusilla and the Lemures in Ul'dah, and the life of crime and voidsent hunting suited her. In time, she also became a spy, selling useful information to the highest bidder (and passing anything important on to the Scions free of charge).
She returned to Ishgard when Nidhogg resumed his crusade, acting alone against the Horde and joining the freelancers on the Steps of Faith. Her voidsent pact would almost certainly get her executed for heresy, but she deems it worth the riskā€”she still has people she loves in the Holy See. She fought alongside the Warriors of Light at Azys Lla and helped them put an end to Thordan's ambitions.
When Aymeric comes into power, she decides to remain in Ishgard and aid the rebuilding effort how she can, safe in the knowledge that sheā€™s not likely to be executed now. Though she holds no official authority or position even in House Dzemael, she's respected (if also somewhat feared by the average person) and has proven herself a stalwart ally to not just Aymeric, Lucia, and Hilda, but the people of Ishgard as a whole. Whatever you need, whether it be information or protection from the wild beasts of Coerthas or simply someone who can clear out those damn ogres, Marielle is at your serviceā€”for a modest fee, of course.

Hi! First of all I just want to say that I adore your blog and Fjorn! One of my favorite tumblrs 100% (:
I have a question about ocā€™s and development and backstory. I have a Female high elf (rogue) and iā€™m trying to write a backstory for her, like where she comes from, her family, past lovers etc what happened before she met the companions basically. But its SO hard and usually i have no problem with this but with bg3 i feel like iā€™m more limited with the ideas, because i want it to make sense with the bg3/dnd universe. Like the place she grow up in etc, i feel like that has to be a place related to high elfs in the bg3/dnd universe if that makes sense? Anyway do you have any tips when writing backstorys for your oc? Thanks a lot!
Hello there! Thank you so much for the love, I appreciate it! Iā€™m gonna be honest, I donā€™t have very good tips when it comes to writing backstories and I feel like Iā€™m still in the process of figuring that out myself ā€“ but Iā€™ll share tidbits from my process if it can help!
Generally speaking, I take specific concepts or ideas from other medias/characters I like to start with (for instance, the idea of a tragic past and trying to escape from someone for years until a nautiloid snatches my Tav away ā€“ a miracle in disguise, aka the beginning of bg3). I also knew I wanted my character to somewhat go through the following states: good ā€“ evil ā€“ neutral.
Thus began the process of reading! So the first thing I did was figure out if there was a good race that would work with that. I was thinking of a Drow or maybe a Tiefling, but I eventually settled for Aasimar despite them not being in the game. Then I stumbled upon Fallen Aasimar and was like damnā€¦ this is perfect for the concept of a ā€˜ā€˜damnedā€™ā€™ character. After figuring that out, I thought about the class and what would fit the best. Tbh I had just watched The Witcher: Blood Origin (wasnā€™t great) so a big inspiration for Fjorn was Merwyn and Fjall (with Fjall being assigned as her protector, and Merwyn ā€“ an Empress- being evil), so I settled for Paladin since they swear Oaths and it worked with that concept. It wasnā€™t until Larian announced Paladins and showcased Oathbreakers during the Panel from Hell for Patch 9 that I decided thatā€™s what I would choose for him. Dark Knight is one of the most interesting classes for me in FFXIV, and I really wanted to have something similar for Fjorn; I thought it fitted the idea of ā€˜ā€˜sometimes you have to do bad in order to do goodā€™ā€™.
So yeah, I take characteristics from other characters that I really love and just combine all of my favorite things together! Itā€™s not really a tip, but something worth mentioning is that the different Wikis out there are extremely useful: Forgotten Realms Wiki, DnD 5th Edition Wikidot, Baldurā€™s Gate Wiki, DnD Beyond, (wouldnā€™t recommend Fextralife), etc. I also spent quite some time on reddit just looking up other peopleā€™s DnD OC concepts, which did spark some ideas! I wouldnā€™t worry tooooo much about things not making sense though, the one thing I love about DnD is that you can go absolutely wild and get away with almost anything.
In your case, would probs start reading up about high elves, although I feel like they could come from nearly anywhere. According to different wikis, there are different kinds of high elves in the Forgotten Realms: moon elf, sun elf, star elf, dark elf and llewyrr. Thereā€™s most likely way more info about them out there, possibly also more kinds, but this could serve as a base. Click on one and then read about them until one catches your eyes and just go from there since they may have different cultures, different upbringing, different characteristics, etc.
Sorry this is kinda all over the place, but I hope this helps you a bit more!

Character meme: Thancred
Give me a character and Iā€™ll break them down:
Tumblr media
This got long cuz I tend to ramble about this dude.
How I feel about this character:
This utter absolute godsdamned bastard of a man. How dare he.
When I really got into FFXIV finally (after only dabbling for a bit), the age gap of his listed 32 and my RL age at the time put the same distance as me and my own younger brother, and that is where Thancred fits. I was FINE with him as a total bro, as the local disaster, similar to a younger sibling I am both fond of and exasperated by. He has a lot of backstory, character development, and changes, even before Shadowbringers really brings his various issues and working through them to the foreground. I love snarky, sarcastic characters, using that to cover their pain and issues. Highly competent but still so full of doubts. Acting out middle child of the core Scions family (now the elder brother figure with Papalymo gone and his own sense of responsibility kicking in in healthier ways).
There's a lot there, and he hits a lot of character tropes I like as a writer and reader both. So for 2 full playthroughs, he was a colleague, a companion, a pal, a bro.
Now. Now when I make a fic writing WoL based off the lady midlander CGI model, now when I decide to make an ace WoL who won't get shipped with anyone cuz we so rarely see that, now when I decide to roll Aeryn through the MSQ and got to meeting the Scions and Ifrit's quest...
Sigh. Here we are, 3+ years and counting, and "Shippy Nonsense" has completely taken over my FFXIV posting and it's all that Damn Rogue's fault. I blame his bonus to sneak attack vs a WoL's smallclothes. I know he took that feat.
Heā€™s still my bro that I am going to tease affectionately while my character swoons, but I am going to be amusedly grumbly about it forever.
(Also I still think his ARR model is Generic Anime Protag #3547 and isnā€™t all that visually interesting. I like bits and pieces of the HW mountain hobo look. I think his ShB model is better at showing his experience and personality, but still wish there were some adjustments.)
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Fellow Wolcred ships. I love you all. Also it just makes ā€œsenseā€ to me to ship WoL with a Scion over most other NPCs, and Thancred is definitely the default nice handsome male romance option like what one gets at the beginning of a Bioware game (looking at you, Carth, Kaiden, Alistair...). I just. yā€™know. Thought OC/NPC shipping was for other people, not me.
I have a soft spot for occasional Y'shtola/Thancred and Urianger/Thancred. I feel like heā€™s a person whoā€™d only open to true romantic relationships with people heā€™s known and trusted for awhile, because of his own doubts and issues.
Heā€™s totally a Bi disaster though; a lean toward women, perhaps, but certain dudesā€™ll turn his head.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Thancred & Minfilia for the found family brother-sister trope.
Thancred & Ryne for the same, with father-daughter flavor instead.
Thancred & Urianger for the best bros back and forth.
Thancred & Y'shtola for the best bros in a different way. I also include here occasional side-along headcanons for a FWB situation for them, safe comfort and release--especially after the Lifestream--but without romance; their love is platonic.
(I canā€™t quite see Urianger doing a casual FWB in the same way tho, he doesnā€™t strike me as the type; itā€™s all or nothing there.)
My unpopular opinion about this character
How I see the "temporary eye injury." How he likely wasn't as much of a slut as assumed--while he got plenty, he also used the flirting as a cover a lot (esp given how he drops the flirty demeanor entirely post-Antitower). How he likely wasn't as much of a drunkard in ARR patches as assumed, either; getting blackout drunk makes little sense when the issue was loss of control thanks to possession.
I also think many of the people who think it would have been ā€œfittingā€ (or just wished for) him to die at the Trolley RP Duty in ShB missed some of the point of Shadowbringersā€™ overarching themes. ShB could certainly be dark at times, but overall was a story of hope and the differences between remembering the past versus being held captive by it, and the bonds between people. If it were a more tragic story with more pessimistic themes, then yes; Thancred dying then to protect Ryne with their issues unresolved would have been (heartbreaking but) fitting. However, thatā€™s not the story being told; itā€™s him using that battle as catharsis to beat at his own issues and realize he really had repeated his original mistakes. To make his peace with Minfiliaā€™s loss and then, in the end, work things through with Ryne and be the man he should have been for her.
Ryne gets the fairy tale ending of having her parental figure that she feared resented her tell her he was sorry and fix himself for her.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
We should have seen more of his and Minfiliaā€™s found family relationship in game. There wasnā€™t a lot of room for it in 2.0, it could have been in the 2.x patches a bit more, but a lot about their relationship is described after sheā€™s already gone.
Ranā€™jit was Thancredā€™s kill. There is no way that was originally written with the General porting out last second just for the WoL to suddenly be able to defeat his plot armor. The Trolley RP Duty has the foil character set up, the ā€œlast special bullet,ā€ and the player is controlling Thancred at the time. It makes no narrative sense and stinks of executive meddling out of some fear the players would feel cheated by not having it be WoL who defeats Ranā€™jit, but itā€™s a serious misstep in the story. We could have, should have, fought suped-up Jongleurs as the speed bump boss to Vauthry, as those characters also were woefully underused.
Iā€™m also hoping for more personal Scion history as we get to Old Sharlayan; while most of the older Scions are from or were educated in the Dravanian Colony, being around the culture and people again shall surely give us more information as to their academic backgrounds.
And we all always need more nutkin interactions and shenanigans.

1. What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)? / 3. How did you choose their name?
1. What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?
For Kasumi.
I guess the first element I came up with Kasumi was a character concept. I hadnā€™t played a super feminine character up until that point and all my characters had been action based characters like rogues/mages so I wanted to play a character who, for the most part, didnā€™t go on great adventures. I originally wanted to play a geisha, then an oiran. After a while I changed her concept back to a geisha and then settled for anĀ ā€œentertainerā€, inspired by historical east asian entertainers like geisha, Korean kisaeng and Chinese Yiji. At the time I was also inspired by companions and Firefly. Of course, her concept evolved over time to a performer and now a merchant, but her original concept was that of a geisha who entertained people and was highly feminine and sweet.Ā
3. How did you choose their name?
Answering this for @kira-ffxiv since Iā€™ve already answered this for Kasumi a few times now.Ā
Iā€™m gonna sound like a lame weeb, but I got the name from an anime, Death Note. Kira is actually a transliteration ofĀ ā€œKillerā€ in Japanese, since Lā€™s are pronounced with an R sound in Japanese. Iā€™ve also always like the Celtic name Kira.Ā
Itā€™s also a common surname in Japan apparently and the kanji spelling of the nameĀ ā€œKiraā€ can mean multiple things likeĀ č¼ęœˆ, which means ā€œbright moonā€ orĀ  Ā ę˜ŸĀ ā€œstarā€. Itā€™s also the nickname version of names like Akira. Truthfully though, Iā€™m going to call it right now and say her name meansĀ ę˜Ÿ ā€œstarā€ because her parents naming herĀ ā€œkillerā€ seems messed up, even for the daughter of a crime boss and a ninja clan princess. >.>

Lady Merethe of House Sofinoy
"Now, why would I get close enough to a dragon for it to rip me apart when I could simply bombard it with spells from a distance? I've never understood that."
The children of House Sofinoy are known for their somewhat unorthodox ways of thinking, and Merethe is no exception. The youngest of the viscountess's daughters, she has no wish to follow the path laid out for her by tradition. Along with her younger brother, AurƩlien, she chose a different way to fight for her people- though her weapon of choice (thaumaturgy) is much more acceptable in the eyes of their peers than AurƩlien's (machinistry).
Since the end of the Dragonsong War, she's spent much of her time journeying across Coerthas, working as a mercenary and adventurer of sorts, occasionally joined by AurƩlien. The two have also been known to aid the Scions and the Warrior of Light when the situation calls for it, most notably during the war for Ala Mhigo and at the Ghimlyt Dark.
Bonus, the burden of being an older sibling:
Tumblr media
Why is it that every time someone wishes to speak with AurƩlien, Merethe is the one they send to track him down and pry him away from his work for five minutes? Fury help her, if she has to interrupt her research to find him one more godsdamned time-
Stephanivien can only offer his sympathy. Wasn't his turn to babysit ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ
