to clarify i don’t hate spotify wrapped season bc i hate seeing what music people like, i hate spotify wrapped season bc spotify is literally the worst music streaming service and i hate having it shoved down my throat left and right by people who have somehow justified paying for that garbage
#have you even SEEN the interface???#absolutely insufferable in every way#not to mention how they inflate streaming numbers to make money and platform assholes like joe rogan#just. you know. 🏴☠️#or better yet buy the albums and support the artists directly#bc they sure as shit aren’t making money off spotify unless they’re someone like taylor swift#also pretty much every other streaming platform (including youtube!!!) gives you a playlist of your top listened tracks of the year anyway.

Maybe this is a silly question to ask about a podcast that 1) isn't fiction and 2) has hundreds of episodes, BUT. Do you have a favorite Knowledge Fight episode? Or maybe, idk, a favorite 'era' or type of episodes? A friend sent me a playlist of all the ones covering the Sandy Hook lawsuits - man those formulaic objections eps are fun! - and I've just finished listening to the last one on the list. So I guess I'm looking for recs on what to listen to next?
The whole formulaic objections series is good, i like the ones where they discuss Alex as a guest on Joe Rogan's Podcast, episode 25 about Dennis Montgomery is a good early example of Dan's research habits (episode 26 has the 4 ways to learn which is, like, foundational knowledge fight lore), Ep 392 about January 24th 2020 gets into a foundational thing for the covid info that will follow ("it's over for humanity, there will only be lone survivors" - they were VERY VERY worried about what they later decided was overblown) the responses to the court cases (602, 714, 715) that aren't formulaic objections are ALSO good, the episode about Bill Ayers (168) on infowars is really good, the episode about chompsky on Infowars is good (should pop up if you search chompsky in their episode list, 404 "Mr. Jones goes to CPAC" is good, and I like all of the multi-episode series about the documentaries. I like the episode when Jordan comes back to the US after the unite the right rally too - one thing I like in most podcasts I listen to is the leadup to and aftermath of big events, so I end up listening to November 2019 - September 2020 pretty intently across podcasts and knowledge fight is no different, they did good coverage of the way people were covering the Many Events of 2020.
I'm on my third full listen through and my podcast app shows that I've spent 4001.2 hours listening so far (I listen to everything at 2-2.5x speed) and I think they really start getting very very good after they kick off the formulaic objections. The early stuff is also good but they're also both excitable and more willing to jump to conclusions (I'm on about episode sixty right now and Dan is willing to make guesses about stuff in his time travel episodes and assert things that I don't think he would these days.)
I really like most of the "chatting with" episodes where they're talking to another person who researches in a similar space and I usually really appreciate Jordan's interviews but sometimes he's just too left for a more center guest and it becomes too awkward for me to listen to (I have to skip the Brian Stelter episode - I understand why Jordan interviews the way that he does and TBH I approve, I just can't listen to it).
If you're looking for another playlist to get started I'd say try episodes 130A-130E, which is the breakdown of the endgame documentary.
If you decide to start listening and you are coming across wacky wednesday episodes and finding yourself bored, just skip them and you won't be missing out.
(it may be a silly question to ask most people but it's not a silly question to ask me because I *DO* have my favorites out of nearly a thousand episodes of a nonfiction podcast about alex jones).

Hi wil!
Do you have a spotify (or any other streaming platform) playlist that you can share? :D
I do! I've made a few playlists that are public.
The most popular is my new wave playlist, though my personal favorite is Wil Wheaton's KROQ Happy Place. It's mostly deep cuts from the early 80s, when I was discovering and falling in love with punk, new wave, goth, and the like. There are others on my profile.
And since we are talking about Spotify, I have to say: Joe Rogan is a cancer on society and it sickens me that Spotify is giving him a platform and money it should be giving artists. And it's criminal that, in 2024, ANY streaming service uses lossy compression like Spotify does. There is a generation of music lovers who have no idea what that music is supposed to sound like, because they only hear it from Spotify. They don't know what they are missing, and maybe never will. If I were a musician, I'd be pretty unhappy about that. Can you imagine movies being just slightly out of focus all the time? You'd get used to it, but that's not how it's supposed to look.
But the reality is, Spotify has the deepest library and best user experience of all the streaming services I've experienced. Oh, how I wish Apple didn't believe that UI peaked in 2009 and nothing should ever change.
So, the instant a robust alternative to Spotify arrives, I am there, and I know I'm not alone. But until then, it's where my playlists live.

Being rong/etvfuccv (a short grimoire)
Etvfuccv is a Muskogee word, pronounced like "Eh tuh fuh chuh." It's what you tell people when they've gone the wrong direction. We call our band Rong because most of our members speak English so far, but feel free to translate the name into your native language however you see fit
Rong isn't just a band, it's a magical practice, and anyone can be Rong who follows these guidelines and calls themselves such.
To start with, Rong is the dumbest, most fucked up punk band in the world. Think of it like playing a character, not just being in a band. I recommend the following rules to start with, though you can drop some or add some as you see fit or as skill level allows:
1. Only covers
2. Only songs about girls.
3. No key changes
4. Only 4/4 time.
5. Eat acid every practice and every show (this is the most important part.)
You aren't limited to these instructions - get creative and follow your heart! (For example, my grandfather recommended we only take peyote.) The best songs have no chord progression changes, so you can have long improv solos without getting lost. Try not to stop between songs as much as possible. Five members is ideal, the lower the skill level the better - there are no band members too unskilled, only songs that are too hard.
If you're familiar with the Grateful Dead, Rong is kind of like the Evil Dead. Get weird, get crazy, get stupid. For our first show I told everyone we would have pony rides, but we actually had my bassist give piggyback rides while wearing a pony mask I made from duct tape (this following a tradition my dad's Rong started.)
In addition to our five instrument-wielding band members, we also have a mascot, named Rong Boy. Rong Boy's job is to mosh like the world is ending even if it's a slow song. If anyone else starts dancing, he attacks them. If no one else is dancing, he attacks the band. (This is a gender neutral title.)
Every practice, and especially every show, is a ritual to honor Eris, the goddess of chaos. I recommend reading Principia Discordia for inspiration, but on the other hand, being able to read isn't very punk rock.
Don't be discouraged if your whole band breaks up after each show and you have to find new members - it's traditional. (It may even be detrimental to have too many practices before a show, as it will give your band time to break up early.)
This sacred magical practice was passed down to me by Rogan Marshall, who began the work in 1992. To hear both of our Rong recordings, check out my Youtube page (here's the playlist.) If you decide to be Rong, send me your recordings!

🗂: Do you make moodboards for your fics or blorbos?
I did once. I wasn't really a fan of it though cause I'd never done it. I make cover designs on Microsoft Word. If you look atwhat I posted on my Anselm Vogelweide x OC story, Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, you'll find what I'm talking about. Here's the masterlist. But I do that for my own original fiction and my fanfictions (including the old ones that never got posted anywhere and probably never will cause they're trash).
🎃: Do you write for holiday (Halloween, Christmas, etc) events? If so, what's your favorite work from one of those events?
I never have actually. In fanfiction or original fiction. The closest I've ever come has been a few horror stories or scenes I've written. But nothing for Halloween or anything. I wrote a birthday celebration into a story once. But it wasn't even that. It was "today's your birthday, here are a few gifts" and that was it. I do read holiday fics that other people write. Halloween fics are generally my favorite, but I do love the coziness of Christmas (and similar) stories.
🎵: Do you create playlists for your fics?
All the time. Ish. They're mostly in my head, but I made a bunch on YouTube that I add to all the time, and I made a couple with music I downloaded to my phone. I would have done it on Spotify too, but I wasn't interested in making playlists when I used Spotify, and I stopped using it to protest Joe Rogan's podcast back in 2020. I've only gone back to Spotify once since then and it was to promote a podcast here that someone I know created. So, for the most part, when I make a playlist, it's an actual list of songs I listened to while I wrote the story. Again, there's an example of that on the Wolf in Sheep's Clothing masterlist. (I'm not trying to self promote, I swear. I just went all out for this story because it was the first one I posted here.)

Almost forgot about this! I built a playlist for The Great Cities on Spotify (before Spotify pissed me off over the Joe Rogan shit and I cancelled my account). Probably needs to be updated since I put this together for THE CITY WE BECAME and hadn’t yet written THE WORLD WE MAKE. I’ll get around to it -- and move it over to Tidal, my current music scrip -- eventually.
Not all of these are songs by New York musicians, obvs; some just fit the mood of the book, or particular characters, or particular scenes. Frex:
“Umbrella”: the scene where Manny rides on top of the cab to umbrella-joust with an otherworldly eruption on FDR Drive
“Cha Cha Cha”: a character song for Brooklyn, whose “MC Free” life was modeled on MC Lyte
“Ain’t No Half Steppin”: a character song for Bronca and her magical steel-toed boots
“Breakthrough”: a character song for Padmini/Queens, because I imagine something like that playing in her mind while she’s working through math in her head
“Move Bitch”: when Brooklyn and Bronca drive the gauntlet of 2nd Ave, with Padmini backseating
“Bad Moon Rising”: that particular eerie cover (which I heard for the first time while playing “Mafia 3,” lol) was perfect for Chapter 16, as Certain Doom looms over the city.
“Sympathy for the Devil”: the Woman in White’s character song, of course. (Also Manny’s.)
“New York New York”: Grandmaster Flash version -- this is the song Brooklyn plays on her phone when Manny first meets her in Chapter Two.
“In Da Club”: I just imagined all of the avatars walking down the street to this, in a kind of slow-mo “look at these badass mofos now that they’ve finally gotten their shit together” moment
“Return of the Mack”: the primary’s character song, after [spoiler]
There’s more, but you get the idea!
