How copper-clad ground rod lugs work: A blog about copper-clad ground rods and their use in the electrical industry
As we advance to a higher level of development, our high-rise buildings get bigger and bigger. Residential and commercial buildings are better in terms of technology, strength and infrastructure. We use more appliances and instruments driven by electrical energy. A proficient grounding system is installed and attached to the electrical system to protect them from electrical surges and lightning strikes.
A copper-clad ground rod is installed as the conducting element in the ground at a safe distance from the building premise. It is then connected to the electrical system following the latest industry standards. One of the prime elements that ensure the proper conduction of excess flow of electrical energy due to manufactured or natural reasons is the ground electrode or ground rod. The installation process requires copper cables, clamps, and lugs as essential components to connect with the electrical system of a premise.
How copper clad ground rods and cable lugs work?
Copper-clad ground or copper-bonded rods are chosen as a cost-effective option for residential buildings and commercial premises. They have a steel core and can resist corrosion perfectly. Moreover, the conduction is not compromised due to the copper cladding on the ground rods.
This type of ground rod is used in places where corrosion is less. Following the standard protocols, the installation is done closer to the premises in different locations to protect the buildings from lightning and voltage surge. In this process, rod clamps and cable lugs get used.
The ground rods need to be connected to the primary electrical system. Hence, copper cables are used for the lowest resistance to connect a ground rod with the main electrical panel. In this aspect, high-quality cable lugs are used to connect the cables with the electrical panel and the ground rod.
Generally, copper lugs are used as they offer high strength and more specific installation features. The lumen of these lugs can hold the copper cable terminal exceptionally. The lumen of the barrel portion is then crimped or fused with the cable terminal to avoid loose fitting. The palm portion is then connected to the electrical panel in specified places with nuts. The strength of this junction determines the functionality of the ground system.
The other end of the terminal is then connected to the copper clad ground rod or the electrode installed under the ground. Clamps are used to ensure that the cable and rod remain in their respective places. Copper cables, copper lugs and a copper-clad ground electrode get assembled and installed to form an efficient grounding system for a premise.
Importance of copper lugs, clamps and grounding rods
Almost all the elements installed to form a formidable grounding system are either made of copper or clad with the same feature. This element not only resists corrosion but also enhances the conductivity of the grounding system.

What exactly are Copper Lugs?
Electrical lugs are clamps or connectors that are used to connect two or more electrical devices. When there is a hindrance in the supply and distribution of electric current in cables electrical lugs are used so that a permanent connection can be established when it is not possible.
There are different kinds of electrical lugs that differ in size, configuration, use, shape, and materials. The use of cable lugs varies from industry to industry.
Copper lugs are electrical components that are effectively used to join wires with other electrical gadgets. There are two ends to a copper lug, one end is used to accommodate the cable which is done by crimping or soldering and the other end of the copper lug is attached to a terminal fastened with bolts and screws.
Pioneer Powers International is the leading copper lugs manufacturer in the country, delivering excellence since 2001. Not just copper lugs, Pioneer Powers International is also the industry leader in producing Aluminium Lugs, Earthing and Lightning Protection, Copper Bonded Earth Rod, etc.

USES OF COPPER LUGS
Copper lugs are used for a variety of purposes the main use of which is to attach cables with electrical appliances. They are devices that transfer electricity between two or more electrical cables. Copper lugs have the finest electrical performance, making them ideal for high-voltage applications. Let us take a look at what are the common uses of Copper Lugs:
Copper lugs are best suited for large gauge applications for power draw and grounding.
Copper Lugs are used in power cable systems and electronic devices
With the advantage of safety, they are also used in fuse sockets, power circuits, switches, etc.
Used to reduce the diameter of a thick cable so that it can be attached to a cable having a smaller diameter.
The following are some of the different places where a copper lug is commonly used:
Power Distribution Cabinets
Shipyards
Household Appliances
Metal Processing
Mechanical Equipment Factories
Production Processes
Electrical Equipment Factories

Exactly how to Set Up an SUP (Stand Paddleboard) for Angling
Exactly how to Set Up an SUP (Stand Paddleboard) for Angling
Successful angling on an SUP calls for organization and planning. With an unpredictable platform and minimal room it is a difficulty to gear a paddle board.
Boards are constructed in a different way. An excellent angling board is larger (34-36″) than a typical board. Excellent buoyancy and a square tail will certainly aid the angler too. When planning your fishing paddle board configuration think about the rods first. With the exception of one pole that I keep in front of me I will certainly position the other poles behind me. I have actually obtained too many lines captured or cut by the paddle when the rods are put in front.
I such as to put the gear I require to access consistently on front of me. It is much easier to stoop down than to sit and turn around. Fishing cages are excellent for this. They fit the board well as well as hold lots of things. You can buy an angling dog crate currently set up with pockets and rod owners or make one on your own from materials available in the house Depot. Use 2″ PVC pipeline as well as cord ties to protect the rod holders. Protect the dog crate with bungee cables. If your board does not have connected downs factory installed it is very easy to epoxy some on.
My cage will certainly hold all my deal with, attractions, water bottle, leaders and also misc things. I additionally keep pliers and also/ or scissors helpful. There is a very easy arrangement for a deepness finder that I made using a clamp from House Depot and also a “Humminbird Fishing Buddy”. I only utilize this when it is calm as it will bang around in waves.
A cooler behind you is excellent if your board will certainly hold it. It not only works as a seat, yet will certainly hold gear and also function as a fish box. I keep my support as well as PFD in it as well as extra gear. Mounted on the back is a vertical pole owner I use for poles and my gaff or web. Ahead are 2 clamps that serve as a paddle owner.
Lake gain access to is generally easy from a coastline area or a ramp. Unless the wind is really blowing I will certainly take as long as I require. The only thought right here is that a cooler imitate a sail in the wind making it tough to paddle. Sea problems are a little harder. Depending upon the surf I will take as high as I can lug or as little as a single rod, a gaff, as well as a dry bag clipped to the watercraft. Surf is easier to go out in than to come back in.

UL 2703 may be solar structure manufacturers the Standard with regard to Mounting Techniques
UL 2703 may be the Standard with regard to Mounting Techniques, Mounting Products, Clamping/Retention Products, and Floor Lugs with regard to Use along with Flat-Plate Solar Modules as well as Panels. Based on Nuance Power, certified conformance allows the racking as well as ground-mount foundation to supply the electric grounding as well as bonding with regard to solar quests certified underneath the UL 1703 Regular for Flat-Plate Solar Modules as well as Panels, eliminating the requirement to install individual ground cabling and supports. For the actual Osprey Roof Mounting System PowerPlatform, the hooking up cable or even rod utilized in the planet anchor basis system is actually what offers the electrical grounding for that array. Jono Stevens, Nuance Energy’s co-founder as well as executive vice leader, says the actual UL 2703 accreditation “will additional simplify the actual installation effort” from the company’s Osprey PowerPlatform. Stevens provides, “Running the actual wires for that DC as well as Solar Mounting Bracket AC connections can also be simplified through the Osprey’s style, which can make the cabling channels a fundamental element of the construction. ” President Trump introduced Thursday which his management will enforce tariffs upon imported metal and aluminum in a few days, despite powerful pushback from a number of his best advisers. Trump stated the solar structure manufacturers Ough. S. will enforce a 25 % tariff upon foreign-made steel along with a 10 % tariff upon foreign-made light weight aluminum, with the official announcement in the future next 7 days. It's not really yet obvious if Metal Roof Solar Mounting Systems particular U. Utes. allies is going to be exempted in the tariffs, something nationwide security specialists have advised the president to complete.

Project Fake Snake: 13-In Baer Brake Upgrade How-To
Whoah! Mustang
If you’re going to build a handling car that can hold its own on the streets as well as the autocross track and occasional road course, it has to be able to “Whoah!” as well as “Go!”
And that’s the task for this installment of Car Craft’s Fake Snake Mustang buildup. The stock Mustang GT’s brakes aren’t exactly bad, but after we had a brake dust fire after our first shakedown trip to Carolina Motorsports Park’s road course, a brake system upgrade was written at the top of the to-do list. In ink.
Here’s the Baer Brakes kit for our ’99 Mustang laid out before beginning installation. It includes 13-inch rotors all around, six-piston Pro+ calipers for the front, smaller four-piston SS4 calipers for the rear, and everything else we need to make it all work.
For a solution to track-ready brakes that won’t fade under abuse or catch fire in the pits, we turned to Baer Brakes. Because our Mustang will see plenty of street miles along with a little driving in anger on the weekends, they pointed us toward their Pro+ system for the front and SS4 in the rear. We’ll be using a beefy 13-inch rotor on all four corners mated with six-piston calipers on the front and four-pistons on the back. It is possible to fit an even larger 14-inch rotor inside the 18-inch Rovos wheels we’ll be using, but with the lighter weight of the Mustang we felt that the 13s would work just fine.
Here’s a look at the stock setup on our Fake Snake GT. By no means are these brakes bad, but they definitely can be better.
Too often, big-inch brakes have been bolted up simply as eye candy for cars that are more show than go. But big rotors and calipers are useful for more than good looks. Moving the friction point (where the caliper presses the brake pad against the rotor) away from the center of the wheel’s rotation provides better leverage. It may seem unnecessary when the smaller OEM brakes are certainly capable of locking up the wheels (That’s all the braking power you need, right?) but the improved leverage provided by the larger brakes provides better pedal feel, improved modulation for maximizing braking force before locking up the tires, resistance to warping, and improved heat dissipation.
Compared to the stock 10-inch rotor (this one is off the rear), the 13-inch Baer two-piece rotor is absolutely massive. The increased diameter will improve braking and help dissipate heat, so brake fade will not be an issue even under the most demanding driving conditions.
Of course, bigger brakes do require a larger wheel to make everything fit. We wanted to stuff absolutely as much rubber under the wheel wells as possible, but bumped up against fitment issues again and again until we contacted American Muscle—who specialize in Mustangs. They set us up with a set of 18-inch Rovos Durban wheels that measure 9 inches in width at the front and steamroller-like 10.5 inches in the rear. That’s tracking into the level of obscene, considering the stock wheels are 17×8 inches. [BEGIN WEB-ONLY] By the way, American Muscle is actually giving away $5,000 worth of Rovos wheels and gear, and we’d definitely recommend you get in on that. You can check it out at www.AmericanMuscle.com/rovos-mustang-wheels.html.
Notice how the pistons on the Pro+ (foreground) are all different sizes. The change in piston diameter helps even-out brake pad pressure from front to back for more efficient braking and even wear. If you already have a favorite pad compound you want to use, it’s not a problem; the six-piston calipers use the Corvette C5/C6 pad shape and the four-piston rear calipers share a common shape used by Wilwood and many others. This means you have a variety of options to get the characteristics you want.
Before the new Baer brakes can go on, the old brakes have to be stripped from the spindle. We’ve also pulled the dust shield. The sheetmetal shield is held to the spindle with rivets, so you’ll have to grind off the heads and drill them out to get the shield off. Afterward, take a moment to clean up the mounting surface for the caliper brackets and the face of the hub so that everything mounts up square without any debris or rust that can throw off proper geometry.
The bracket to secure the brake line to the chassis can be reused, but the OEM fitting has a groove in it that slots into a tang in the bracket. To make the Baer fitting work, the tang must be filed down just a bit.
The CNC billet aluminum front caliper bracket bolts in the same location as the stock unit, but because the Baer system isn’t using floating calipers, this bracket also locates the caliper over the rotor. To make sure the caliper is centered over the rotor, you can install supplied shims between the bracket and spindle.
The rotors are specific to a side. Baer makes it easy with removable decals marking the left- and right-side rotors, but in case it is missing, the grooves cut into the rotor should always point forward. The rotor must be pressed tight to the hub when setting the caliper position, so secure it with a couple of lug nuts. Protect the rotor from marring by placing a large washer between the rotor and the lug nut.
The caliper bolts to the bracket with two fasteners on the inside shoulder of the caliper. The opening in the top of the caliper is large enough that you can use a dial caliper to measure the gap between the rotor and the caliper body. Measure the gap at the top and bottom on both sides between the side of the rotor and caliper body. All four measurements must be equal to ensure that the caliper is centered and square over the rotor. Use the included shims as necessary to make adjustments. Once you have it correct, remove the calipers one last time and reinstall the brake pads.
In the back, we’ve already upgraded the stock 8.8-inch rear with a stronger 9-inch from Quick Performance [https://www.hotrod.com/articles/mustang-rear-wont-break-quick-performances-9-inch-rearend/]. On this style rear end the axle bearing is proud of the axle housing 0.150 of an inch. Getting brakes to fit the 9-inch instead of the original 8.8 wasn’t an issue with Baer; they simply assembled the components we needed into a kit and shipped us exactly what we needed.
All the rear brake components mount off this backing plate. It bolts to the axle flange with four T-bolts. There is a receiver groove in the plate to center it over the axle bearing. Interestingly, Baer cuts this groove a bit shallow because with different axle combinations the bearing doesn’t always extend exactly 0.150, and the backing plate should be snug against the bearing without being too tight. We simply shipped the backing plates to Baer in their packing with a note saying how much the bearings stood proud on this setup. They machined the backing plates to our needs and shipped them back.
The Quick Performance axles have a hole in the hub to allow access to properly torque the backing plate bolts. The backing plates are also integral to Baer’s parking brake system. Notice the parking brake pad has been installed.
The rear rotor and caliper mounts much the same as the front. One exception is the caliper bolts to the bracket from the back, so shims can be used to adjust the caliper location both in and out. The smaller, four-piston SS4 caliper is chosen for the rear because its reduced clamping ability will help move the braking balance toward the front of the car. This is important because if you lock up the front brakes before the rear, all you do is slide, but if you lock up the rears first you are likely to spin out.
The size and depth of the hole in the top of the SS4 calipers makes it difficult to use a dial caliper to center the caliper over the rotor, so for these we left the brake pads in and used feeler gauges to make sure everything was centered right-to-left and top-to-bottom.
As part of the kit, Baer even includes new parking brake cables. The front attaches to the Mustang in the stock location, and the rear slots over the lever in the backing plate as you see here.
Finally, new braided steel brake lines route brake fluid to the calipers through banjo fittings.
While performance was the main determining factor when choosing a brake upgrade for the Fake Snake buildup, we’ve got to admit that the new brakes do look outrageously good.
Once the brakes were on, we took a minute to pre-fit the new 18-inch wheels. These are American Muscle’s Rovos Durban wheels, and they make plenty of room for the big six-piston Baer calipers. For a very helpful fitment guide, check out www.americanmuscle.com.

TruDesign Blog Site: Easy Ways to Prevent Watercraft Malfunction
Keep Your Watercraft in Great Condition Longer
Raritan Engineering Company your TruDesignprofessionals would like to show you these topics we believed would certainly be of interest to you this month pertaining to future alternative watercraft fuels powering your success.
Your TruDesign experts talk about the amount of watercrafts use tiny lashing to tighten and round off their lifelines. Do not depend upon the tiny 1/8″ stainless loop bonded on the pulpit. Instead, run the little lashing via the tiny stainless loop and after that around the entire leg of the pulpit.
For instance, a damaged outhaul could mess up a race. You can be prepared for this with a few simple concepts. On tiny watercraft such as the Melges 24, I set up a little 'V' cleat at the rear of the boom on one side as well as pierce a small opening beyond.
If you have a loose-footed primary, you connect the mainsheet blocks making use of lashing or loops that go completely around the boom rather than simply with an eye on the underside of the boom. Like the lifelines, this is much stronger as well as much safer.
10 Simple Solutions for the Most Typical Boating Malfunctions
You have actually seen the bumper sticker: A bad day of boating is better than an excellent day at work. Charming, however would certainly you actually feel that way if you were adrift 10 miles from the ramp, with a ton of tired, irritable passengers and also an engine that won't begin? At that point, you don't need a slogan, you require a strategy.
Often, your only alternative may be to request for aid – either from a specialist pulling company or a fellow sailor. But in many instances a well-prepared skipper can make the essential repairs to get the watercraft back to port without help.
# 1: It's Sputtering as well as Losing Power
Your boat feels like it's running out of stamina (as well as you have actually ruled out the No. 1 malfunction factor – lacking gas). You probably have a filter trouble or fouled plugs.
Remedy: Change the in-line gas filter – you did bring an extra, really did not you? If not, you could at the very least remove as well as remove the filter aspect of any particles, as well as drain pipes any type of accumulated water.
Avoidance: It's feasible to acquire a bad lots of fuel, however it's most likely that the fuel spoiled while in your watercraft. Leaving a tank near vacant for extended periods of time can trigger condensation and also water in the gas.
Older tanks could have debris at the bottom, which can obtain stirred up as the fuel degree decreases. The best service could be boosted purification. Consider including a larger aftermarket fuel filter. And always remember the spare aspects.
Lug Onboard: Extra filter or filter element as well as a filter wrench.
Excellent Boat Upkeep Way Less Spending Later
# 2: The Belt Broke
You possibly will not hear the noise of a drive belt damaging over the basic engine sound, but you will know something's wrong when your overheat cautioning light comes on, or your voltage meter reveals that the alternator isn't really billing. Having a broken belt is a circumstance one-of-a-kind to inboards and I/Os, and also one that can close you down in hurry. Without a belt intact, you'll have no generator or water pump.
We are honored to be your TruDesign distributor below at Raritan Design. See us and see exactly how we are the # 1 specialist in aquatic cleanliness products.
Solution: There's a lot of info out there on jury-rigging a short-term belt by using fishing line or pantyhose or some such. This might work, yet would not it be much easier to just lug an extra, together with the wrenches had to alter it?
Avoidance: Evaluate, tighten and clothe the belt. You additionally might wish to inspect the condition of the pulley-blocks' contact surface areas. Sometimes, rust could create harsh areas on the wheels that will consume a brand-new belt in no time.
Carry Onboard: Marine tool package, which includes whatever required for this and other fundamental fixings.
# 3: The Engine Is Overheating
The needle on the temperature level scale is climbing. This often means you have a lack of water circulation in the air conditioning loophole. Outboards, the majority of small inboards and also I/Os don't have radiators like your car, as well as rather utilize the water they are drifting on cool the engine.
Solution: Trace the resource. In a vast majority of situations, the trouble is a blockage in the raw water consumption – like weeds, mud or a plastic bag. Situate the intake and tidy it out.
A loosened hose clamp or a split or burst pipe can likewise slow down water circulation, and it could spray harmful wetness around the engine.
Prevention: Routinely solution and change the impeller. Additionally check out the condition of its real estate. Scarring or matching of the steel real estate can trigger even a good impeller to lose pumping power.
Make certain you or your mechanic checks for deterioration or obstruction in the exhaust system. Occasionally, have the exhaust risers and also linked components opened up for assessment.
Carry Onboard: Soft cable or rod to serpent consumption clogs.
Don't fail to remember these wonderful tips on exactly how to keep your boat in great problem. 1) If your engine is sputtering or losing power … Change the in-line gas filter; 2) if the belt brakes … There's a lot of info around on jury-rigging a short-lived belt by using angling line or pantyhose or some such, or bring a spare; and 3) the engine is overheating … Trace the source. In a large bulk of cases, the trouble is a blockage in the raw water consumption – like weeds, mud or a plastic bag. Locate the intake and tidy it out.

Review: Panasonic AU-EVA1 4K Cine Camera
Panasonic’s $7,345 AU-EVA1 is a Super35mm single-sensor camcorder with a 5.7K Bayer-mask sensor, an EF lens mount, variable frame rates, and 14+ stops of dynamic range, recording on SDXC cards using log, HLG, and standard gamma renderings. Its compact, boxy body with removable rotating side grip is like that of the Sony FS5, but its images, menus, and touchscreen monitor make it feel more like a junior VariCam LT, with maybe a pinch of DVX200 added into the mix.
Two Things
Before we dive into the details, I should mention a couple of controversial aspects of the EVA1: there’s no EVF, and the camera uses an EF mount, not MFT or PL.
The EVA1 lacks the rear-mounted flip-up EVF commonly found on similar cameras and its 3.5” touchscreen monitor is equipped only with a sunshade.
EVA1 LCD with sunshade
Many buyers will want to add a loupe to the monitor or use a separate EVF.
EVA1’s use of a Super35mm sensor and Canon EF mount instead of a 4/3” sensor and MFT mount—Micro Four Thirds, as on Panasonic’s AF-100 and GH-series cameras—may seem like a break with previous Panasonic affordable-camera tradition, but it’s consistent with the VariCam line: the LT ships with an EF mount.
While existing MFT lenses can’t be used (or swapped between an EVA1 and a GH5), the larger S35mm sensor offers focal-length compatibility with standard cinema lenses (and format compatibility with standard cinematographer’s brains) and at least a one stop improvement in noise performance compared to the smaller sensor.
The EF mount opens the camera to the large and growing world of EF-mount lenses in both cine and still-camera flavors. If EF isn’t your cup of tea you can swap the mount for a Wooden Camera PL mount (Wooden offers the mount with an installation service in case you don’t have a collimator handy to calibrate flange focal depth).
Design
EVA1 body, unadorned
The EVA1’s body is reasonably compact for a S35mm camera with built-in recording at 5-5/16” × 5-1/4” × 6-11/16” (135mm × 133mm × 170 mm). The body alone is 2.6 lbs or 1.2kg; add side grip, top handle, monitor with hood, mic holder and battery for a 4.5 lb / 2.05 kg weight.
EVA1 with top handle, LCD, and Canon 24-70mm f/2.8
The operator’s side has a record start/stop button on the top bevel, up/down buttons for the three built-in ND filters (ND 0.6, 1.2, and 1.8), a broad and well-textured iris control wheel, and a three-position flip switch at the bottom. The switch determines what the smaller control wheel behind it adjusts: white balance, gain, or a user-selectable function such as monitor volume, shutter speed, or frame rate. Three big round user buttons, easily found by touch, echo those on the side of the VariCam LT (but lack that camera’s backlighting, sadly). Four smaller oblong buttons are arrayed behind them; they’re a bit more finicky to find sight unseen. Similar small buttons activate the MENU and let you EXIT the current menu level.
ND and IR filters in the EVA1, partially retracted. This is how the camera arrived; once power was applied they snapped into proper alignment.
Both control wheels let you push them in: the IRIS wheel switches between manual and auto iris, while the small wheel’s click selects the current menu item.
A LOCK switch lets you lock out your selection of side-panel buttons to prevent fumble-fingered activation. Two audio gain pots poke through a flip-open cover and can be twiddled with a fingertip while the cover is closed. Opening the cover lets you grab the knobs between two fingers, and exposes separate AUTO/MANUAL switches for each channel. A recessed flip switch at the bottom, just below a red power-on LED, switches the camera on and off.
EVA1 rear, port covers closed
The rear of the camera has two SDXC slots behind a flip-open cover. Each slot has a status LED: green for “OK to yank the card”, yellow for “this is the active card”, flashing yellow for “recording to this card; hands off!” Another assignable button sits below the slots, a red tally LED sits below it.
EVA1 rear, port covers open
There’s a full-size HDMI port behind a flip-open rubber cover. Another cover opens to reveal a USB port for the AJ-WM50P Wi-Fi dongle and one for “service”. Similar covers protect a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack, BNCs for SDI out and timecode in/out, and a 12 volt coax power input for the supplied AC adapter.
Dual XLR inputs for mic or line-level feeds sit unprotected to the right.
Batteries dock in the center. The stock 7.3 volt, 5900 mAh battery nestles entirely inside the camera while larger-capacity batteries (8850 and 11800 mAh) protrude slightly. The camera’s cooling system vents through a grille just above the battery; a warm and gentle breeze wafts from the back of the camera, driven by a fan so quiet I had to struggle to hear it.
EVA1 right side without grip
The right side has the mount for the rotating side grip, and sockets for the LCD monitor cable and the grip’s control cable. There’s also a focus hook at the top.
The grip itself attaches with a bayonet mount and rotates through a bit over 90º when a thumb release is pressed.
EVA1 grip rotated fully back

EVA1 grip rotated fully forwards.
The contoured grip has MENU and record start/stop for the thumb, another control wheel and a user-assignable button for the index finder, and a final assignable button on the inside where the middle or ring finger can just reach it. The grip is made of textured, hard plastic and has a padded adjustable strap.

EVA1 grip, front view. User Button 9 is just visible on the inside, in front of the cable.
The front of the camera has the EF-mount release button and another user-assignable button (there are nine total, scattered across the camera and grip) which triggers AWB by default. Dual built-in mics, a tally LED, and an ambient light sensor for auto-tracking white balance occupy a shiny panel at the top. A grille below the lens mount admits air for the cooling system.
Front view of EVA1
The EF mount is the standard bayonet-mount style used on still cameras, not the far superior positive-locking breech mount found on the Canon C500 and the VariCam LT. Bayonet mounts use spring pressure to keep the lens aligned properly, and heavy lenses or the force of a follow-focus or focus motor can move a lens in a bayonet mount, wobbling the image and possibly throwing off focus.
Fortunately the springs in the EVA1’s mount are the stiffest I’ve encountered. I hung a relatively heavy (3.67 lb / 1.66 kg) 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom off the mount with no support rods, and it showed no tendency to flex or wobble.
The top panel of the camera is well equipped with 1/4” sockets for accessories, and for the top handle, which mounts using uses captive knurled knobs.
EVA1 top panel
The top handle has two passive shoe mounts, 1/4” and 3/8” sockets, a mounting point on the right for a microphone holder, and three mounting points—front left, rear right and left—for the LCD monitor arm. A supplied shoulder strap threads through two lugs on the top handle if you want to rock it ENG-style.
EVA1 top handle
The LCD mount is simply a stubby rod, clamped in any of eight positions by its own knurled knob. The LCD holds onto that rod using a friction clamp with its own knob; the clamp allows the monitor to pivot on two axes, with click-stops at 90º angles.
You can orient the joints so that the monitor won’t pivot if pressure is applied to it, say, by the force of an eyepiece loupe pressed to one’s eye. However there’s enough flex in the plastic assembly that I’m leery of recommending such a thing, for fear of overstressing the assembly and breaking it off. Apparently I’m not the only one; Zacuto’s EVA1 Z-Finder loupe includes a metal exoskeleton to rigidify the rig and make it robust enough for the harsh handling viewfinders are subject to (the EVA1 Z-Finder is covered in part 3 of this review).
The LCD mount’s attachment screw is a standard 1/4”x20, and the monitor’s clamp fits any 15mm rod, so you can dig into your box of camera-support Tinkertoys and mount the display anywhere its 15” / 23 cm cable will reach.
LCD monitor mounted atop Zacuto EVF
The monitor is a 3.5” 16×9 resistive touchscreen like the one used on the DVX200. Like most resistive touchscreens takes a fair bit of pressure to activate, but it’s unaffected by moisture and it can be used while wearing gloves. A slide switch next to the permanently-attached cable lets you flip or mirror the image as needed for any orientation.
The baseplate of the camera has both 1/4” and 3/8” tripod sockets.
EVA1 baseplate
There’s more in part 2 and part 3…

100 BUDGET DIY MODS PART 4 OF 4
PART FOUR OF OUR SERIES FOR HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR 4WD IN A DAY
100 easy and essential DIY mods for under $100!
25 – AUTO-OFF HEADLIGHTS
COST: $10 TIME: 1 hour DIFFICULTY 2/5 Use a multimeter to figure out which pin on your headlight relay powers up when you turn your headlights on, then use another relay triggered by accessories power to turn your headlight relay on. Run a switch to your dash to be able to cancel the auto-on headlights if you need to, and make sure to only add to any factory wiring, never replace so your lights can still operate like normal.
24 – PORTABLE CAMPING TOILET
COST: $70 TIME: None! DIFFICULTY 1/5 Don’t wanna answer natures call out bush the traditional way? Get yourself an Adventure Kings Portable Camping Toilet and it will change the way you do your business out bush!
23 – TOWBAR VICE
COST: $50-100 TIME: 1 hour DIFFICULTY 2/5 If you’ve got an old vice laying around, get some 50×50 thick wall square tubing and bolt the vice to it, and drill a hole for your hitch pin for a vice out on the tracks.
22 – BUDGET TINTING
COST: $80-100 TIME: 3 hours DIFFICULTY 2/5 It’s not gonna look as nice as the professional window tint, but for an easy tint job, get some cheap rolls of tint online and install it yourself at home for a bit more shade on the long drives.
21 – TRAILING ARM GUSSETS
COST: $50 TIME: 3 hours DIFFICULTY 3/5 Get a bit of flat bar or steel rod, and weld it to your trailing arm as a DIY gusset. It may just save your arms the next time you hit them on a rock.
20 – NEVER SPILL A DROP
COST 10 bucks DIFFICULTY 1/5 spanners TIME 10 minutes TOOLS drill, holesaw MATERIAL Oil filler cap for your model 4WD, funnel
METHOD
Get yourself a second oil cap that fits your motor and drill a hole in the top the size of your chosen funnel.
Fit the funnel into the oil cap. You can secure the funnel to the cap, or it may fit snug enough that you don’t have to.
Screw the cap onto your motor and top up your oil with no mess.
WHAT NOT TO DO
Don’t rush when you drill into the plastic oil cap as you can damage it.
Make sure you clean off any plastic burs so you don’t get them in your motor.
19 RELOCATE YOUR SOLENOID
Keep your important winch control box nice and dry with this super easy mod. COST $20 DIFFICULTY 1/5 spanners TIME 1 hour TOOLS spanners, sockets, crimping tool, multigrips, soldering iron and solder MATERIAL exhaust clamps, 4 gauge wiring, terminal lugs, heat shrink
METHOD
Figure out a good mounting point for your Domin8r Winch control box in the engine bay.
Disconnect your control box from your winch and move it up to where you want to mount it.
Mount your control box in its new location and then connect your new wiring to the existing. points in the control box. Be sure to use heat shrink and solder where necessary.
Run the wiring down to your winch, wrap them in conduit and connect it up.
Cable tie the wires so they don’t rub on anything and test out your control box.
This is the perfect mod if you already have an in-cab winch switch.
WHAT NOT TO DO Don’t do this mod unless you have run a cable for your winch switch or you have in cab winch controls, otherwise you will have to pop your bonnet to winch.
18 – UHF SPEAKER
COST: $30 TIME: 1 hour DIFFICULTY 1/5 You can get your hands on an external UHF speaker that fits your UHF for next to nothing. Think outside the box on where you want to run it. You could sit it in the back with your kitchen setup so you can listen out for mates if they’re out on a night run.
17 – REVERSE CAMERA
COST: $40 TIME: 20 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 If you can’t see out of the back of your 4WD when it’s loaded up, you can get those cheap reverse cameras that clip onto your rear vision mirror. They’re awesome for a budget way to see behind you.
16 – CORK BUNGEE CHORDS
COST: $5 TIME: 10 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 If you don’t want to spare a precious cable tie to keep cords and wire neat, drill two holes in an old wine bottle cork and tie some old rope or bungee cord to it. Then just loop the cord around your coiled wiring and secure it over the cork and tighten.
15 – EASILY GREASABLE WHEEL BEARINGS
COST: $10 TIME: 20 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 Fit a couple of grease nipples to your trailer bearing dust caps by tapping a small threaded hole into the centre of the caps. A bit of thread locker later and you’ve got your own DIY greaseable wheel bearings. Heaps better than a wheel falling off when a bearing blows and net cost is free if you’ve got some old parts you can pinch grease nipples off.
14 – BUDGET REVERSE LIGHTS
COST: $25 TIME: 30 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 For a waterproof reverse light, mount the light to the inside top of your rear door and cut out a square in your tinting. Then use a bit of plastic from an A4 folder folded around the bottom to stop glare in the cab.
13 – MULTIPLE COMPRESSOR LINES
COST: $20 TIME: 1 hour DIFFICULTY 2/5 If you’ve got your Thumper Compressor hard mounted in your 4WD, run a T-piece fitting in the line, and two lines off that to either side of your truck for easier air access. Just make sure each hose is finished with regular clip on tyre valves.
12 – INTERIOR CANOPY CLOTHESLINE
COST: $10 TIME: 5 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 On longer trips if you’ve got a ute, some rope between the headboard and the rear ladder rack for hanging your clothes up on the road is perfect for drying them but keeping the dust out too.
11 – ROOF POWER THE RIGHT WAY
COST: $10 TIME: 30 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 For a neat way to run your wiring, run it down behind the snorkel and into the bonnet through the bailey channel below the wipers. To be real neat, drill a small hole and install a rubber grommet to keep the wires safe.
10 – BETTER TRAILER WIRING
Make charging your camper trailer batteries easy as pie with some simple wiring mods. COST about $80 depending on cost P/M of wiring DIFFICULTY 1/5 spanners TIME 30 minutes TOOLS Soldering iron
METHOD
If you tow a camper trailer when you head bush, get about a 10m length of 6 B&S cabling and wire in a mini Anderson connector on each end.
When you pull up to your trailer, you can reconnect the vehicle to the trailer quickly without having to back exactly back into position. It’s useful particularly if you want to crank some 240v power into the batteries when the trailer is at home.
If you have solar power, you can also connect the cables straight to your solar panel on your roofrack back to the solar controller that charges the trailer’s batteries, rather than have it go into the vehicle’s aux batteries and then all the way back to the trailer, which avoids the issue of voltage drop.
9 – TENT FANS
COST: $20 TIME: 1 hour DIFFICULTY 1/5 On a sticky night when there’s no breeze there’s nothing like having the fans cranking. If you have a trailer, cable tie the fans to the trailer’s centre tent pole, which means they stay perfectly in position when the tent is folded away which works just as well with an Adventure Kings Rooftop Tent, then all you need to do is wire it up.
8 – FREE BEER OPENERS
COST: Free! TIME: 30 seconds DIFFICULTY 1/5 Chances are your 4WD already has this mod and you don’t even know about it. Did you know that you can open a non-twist top beer using the door latch inside your B-pillar? Well it works on most Toyotas – there you go, you just saved $5.
7 – ORGANISE YOUR GRUB
COST: $20-100 (depending on cases) TIME: 20 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 Cheap plastic tubs break up on the first 100m of dirt road and you will find yourself unpacking your entire vehicle to look for the onions that have rolled everywhere. Keep all of your spices together in a plastic lunchbox and your bigger food in a Spacecase for the ultimate storage. If you’re planning on making a roast at camp, pack all the ingredients you need inside your Bedourie Camp Oven before you go – so its simply a case of pulling the Camp Oven out of the 4WD and you’re ready to go!
6 – MILK CRATE TRACTION BOARDS
COST: Free! TIME: 15 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 Cut up an old milk crate into sections and cable tie them together so it folds out flat. It won’t be as effective as proper boards but it costs next to nothing and is better than digging for hours.
5 – GRAVITY FED WATER TANK
COST: $75 TIME: 1 hour DIFFICULTY 1/5 Mount your jerry cans on your roof standing up, and run a line down off your roof to a tap. If you have more than one Jerry, join the lines with a T-piece.
4 – MOMENTARY CANOPY LIGHTING
COST: $15 TIME: 30 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 Mount a momentary switch at your canopy door so that the interior lighting comes on when you open the door.
3 – EXTERNAL COMPRESSOR FITTINGS
COST: $20 TIME: 30 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 If you have a hard mounted compressor, run your airlines to points outside the 4WD for quick access. It costs bugger all and means you won’t burn your hand again disconnecting the hose.
2 – DRY PAPER
COST: Free! TIME: 20 minutes DIFFICULTY 1/5 Get an old coffee container or CD spindle the size of your toilet rolls and cut a slit in the side. It keeps your valuable paper dry, and gives you a slot for it to come out when nature calls.
1 – THIEF-PROOFING ON A BUDGET
Keep the grubs away from your pride and joy with a few simple mods COST $50 bucks (depending on how much you want to do) DIFFICULTY 2/5 TIME 4 hours TOOLS Mig welder, sockets, drill, screwdriver MATERIAL Knead it, lock nuts
METHOD
Grab a few drill bits and round out any Philips heads / flat heads. Just make sure you don’t need to get them off in a hurry.
Use a MIG welder to spot weld the end of screws, or weld nuts and bolts on. If you want to go extreme you can just weld the bracket to your mounting point – make sure you’re happy with its position though.
Get creative and use some Knead it or similar on the end of screws or you can make a dome over nuts. Chuck a bit of paint once it is dry and it’s enough for anyone to think twice. The problem with grubs stealing stuff is if they really want it – they are gonna get it eventually. All you can do really is slow them down…Hopefully long enough to catch them.
