S2.E4: Tibb’s Eve and Newfoundland Christmas Slush
Season 2, Episode 4
Title: Tibb’s Eve and Newfoundland Christmas Slush
Time: 52 minutes
Locations: Terranceville
Story: Rockyfoot
Guests: The Duds (Melanie O’Brien and Philip Goodridge); Jeremy Whey (aka @stuffthatinyourgob)
Listen:
About The Episode:
Part One: What is Tibb’s Eve?
For me, and a lot of other Newfoundlanders, the 23rd of December is Tibb’s Eve. It is Christmas Eve Eve and the unofficial start of the holiday season.
For some people, Tibb’s Eve has become synonymous with a good time, full of partying and alcohol. The connection with drinking is so strong that, for some people the day is known as Tipsy (Tip’s) Eve.
In this episode we did into it a little and chat about Tibb’s Eve customs. To help me out, The Duds (Melanie O’Brien and Philip Goodridge) discuss their connection to the day and what lead them to record their holiday track ‘Before the Night (Tibb’s Eve’).

Part Two: Newfoundland Christmas Slush
I’ve celebrated 40+ Christmases in Newfoundland and, until surprisingly recently, I had no idea ‘Newfoundland Christmas slush’ — a fruity, frozen cocktail — was a thing.
It is though. For a lot of Newfoundlanders the holiday season would not be complete without this batch-made cocktail.
I reached out to food blogger/instagrammer Jeremy Whey (aka @stuffthatinyourgob) to discuss his history with Christmas slush. He shares his recipe and variations he’s tried. From there were drifted to dark/light Christmas cake, moose stew, salt cod and other Newfoundland food traditions.
You can follow Jeremy on Instagram at @stuffthatinyourgob.
Here’s his slush recipe, as shared in the episode:
Jeremy’s Newfoundland Christmas Slush
1 cup sugar
6 cups water
2 cans of frozen concentrated orange juice
2 cans of frozen concentrated lemonade
1 large can pineapple juice
1 flask of vodka
Boil the water, stir in the sugar. Add the remaining ingredients and freeze. To serve, scoop slush into a glass and top with as much 7-Up or Ginger Ale as you’d like.
You can find some recipes for alternate versions of Christmas slush here.
Jeremy and I confessed that some of our Christmas baking efforts have been less-than-successful. We used the word ‘dunch.’ It occurs to me that non-NL listeners may be less familiar with that word. Here’s a link to the definition in the Dictionary of Newfoundland English.
And here’s the recipe I mentioned for my mother’s dark Christmas fruitcake. I’ve had great success with this one — nothing dunch about it.
Part Three: Monstrous Things
Normally ‘Monstrous Things’ features tales of Newfoundland sea monsters that have been reported in the mainstream media. This episode, is taking a different tack and veering into the realm of full-on legend — with tales of boo-baggers, boo-darbies and a strange Christmas creature called Rockyfoot.
What do they have in common?
Like Krampus and Santa Claus, they’ve all been used to encourage good behaviour in children.

Rockykit > Rockypaw > Rockyfoot
Kit > Apprentice > Warrior > Kittypet
Tom - RiverClan
Parents: Larchstripe, Meadowleaf
Brothers: Creekwillow, Perchfreeze
Mentor: Vinelight
When he was a kit, he and his brothers snuck out of camp to investigate the fox problem. They stumbled upon a fox trap and Perchkit nearly got caught in it, but the clan deputy, Sunthroat, swooped in and saved Perchkit, Creekkit and Rockykit. Unfortunately, Sunthroat lost his life. The kits ran back to camp, Perchkit thoroughly traumatized, Creekkit swearing he’d never break the warrior code again, and Rockykit… well, he was relatively okay. When he was an apprentice, he, his mother Larchstripe, and a clanmate named Petalstorm got captured by two-legs and forced to live as kittypets. They were rescued by their clanmates, and Rockypaw got his warrior name after his brothers, Rockyfoot, but he always dreamed of returning back to the kittypet life. He found it quite enjoyable and carefree, and he loved exploring new places, which the twolegplace was full off. Plus, there was a lot less noticeable death. So, he told his clan leader, Waterstar, of his choice, and she let him leave the clan, respecting his choice. When Rockyfoot left, his family was shocked, and a bit betrayed, but for the most part they, and all of RiverClan, were accepting of his choice. He lived his life happily as a kittypet, and made lots of new friends.
He wasn’t the best fighter or hunter, but he was decent and always helped out the clan, elders, queens, kits and young apprentices. He enjoyed sitting down and listening to Shadesun and Scorchfin, clan elders, talk about their days as warriors. He was well-loved and adored by not just RiverClan, but all the other clans. He was happy as a warrior, but happier as a kittypet.
Fun Fact: His housefolk named him Rocket, and some other housecats called him Rocky, but he still preferred to be called Rockyfoot.
“Red tabby tom.”

My RiverClan Allegiances
Waterstar, daughter of Thistlesong of SkyClan (deceased; in the Dark Forest) and Goosestar of RiverClan (deceased; in the Dark Forest), is current leader of RiverClan. Her deputy is Sunthroat, brother to Stormbird and son of Violetwhisker (deceased; in StarClan). Hailfrost, sister to Oatheart and daughter of Clawmoon (deceased; in StarClan), is current medicine cat. Mistyleap is the older brother of Beechpelt and Heronflight, and the son of Shadesun and Scorchfin. Mumblesong is mates with Coldsnow, and they are the parents of Briarkit, Fernkit, Jaggedkit and Applekit. Dawnstripe and Goldenmask are the daughters of Forestpelt (deceased; in StarClan). Goldenmask is currently expecting Heronflight’s kits. Minkstep is the daughter of Muddyfeather, the clan elder. Buzzardpaw, mentored by Beechpelt, and Larchpaw, mentored by Mumblesong, are the daughters of Goldenmask and Heronflight.
Muddyfeather, the elder, dies after a moon of being ill with terrible bellyache and coughing fits. Larchpaw and Buzzardpaw become Larchstripe and Buzzardstorm. Coldsnow returns to her warrior duties as her kits become apprentices. Briarpaw is trained by Hailfrost, while Applepaw is mentored by Scorchfin, Jaggedpaw by Minkstep, and Fernpaw by Sunthroat. Goldenmask gives birth to Yellowkit and Petalkit, both toms.
While out on patrol, Fernpaw dives into the river to catch a fish, only to get stuck between some rocks as the current picks up. Sunthroat and Buzzardstorm both jump in after her, but both Fernpaw and Buzzardstorm drown while Sunthroat manages to cling to the riverbed and live. Fernpaw’s siblings get their new names a moon later, with Briarpaw requesting his name be Briarfern after his sister. Jaggedpaw becomes Jaggedstripe, and Applepaw becomes Applewish. Goldenmask returns to her warrior duties as her kits become apprentices, Yellowpaw being mentored by Larchstripe and Petalpaw by Mistyleap. Scorchfin and Shadesun both retire to the elders’ den together. Oatheart gives birth to Sunthroat’s kits, Meadowkit and Gorsekit, while Minkstep gives birth to Beechpelt’s kits, Vinekit, Amberkit and Rapidkit. When ShadowClan comes to RiverClan for help fighting BoneClan and ThunderClan, Waterstar follows her older half-brother Gravelstar’s lead, wishing to stay out of it, not wanting to get caught up further in her family’s drama after all her father, Goosestar’s, manipulation.
Stormbird, Coldsnow, Dawnstripe and Heronflight all catch a bad case of greencough and are unable to recover as the medicine cats can’t find enough catmint. Gorsepaw, Thrushkit, Minkstep and Petalstorm all survive greencough. Hailfrost catches greencough herself while treating the patients and currently still has it. Before catching greencough, Petalpaw was made a warrior names Petalstorm alongside his brother, Yellowpatch. Gorsekit became Gorsepaw, mentored by Waterstar, along with his brother Meadowpaw, who is mentored by Goldenmask. Oatheart returned to her warrior duties, as well as Minkstep. Minkstep’s kits became apprentices too. Vinepaw is mentored by Sunthroat, Amberpaw by Mumblesong, and Rapidpaw by Jaggedstripe. Applewish gives birth to Yellowpatch’s kits, Foxkit and Thrushkit.
Sunthroat gets killed by a fox trap after saving Rockykit, Perchkit and Creekkit. Mumblesong becomes the new deputy of RiverClan. Oatheart dies from greencough. The apprentices become warriors named Meadowleaf, Gorsesun, Vinelight, Amberstream, and Rapidshine. Applewish returns to being a warrior as her kits become apprentices, Foxpaw mentored by Minkstep and Thrushpaw by Goldenmask. Larchstripe gives birth to Meadowleaf’s kits, Rockykit, Perchkit and Creekkit.
Goldenmask dies from greencough. The apprentices become warriors, Foxskip and Thrushspots. Larchstripe returns to her warrior duties as her kits become apprentices, Rockypaw mentored by Vinelight, Perchpaw by Mistyleap and Creekpaw by Gorsesun. Rapidshine gives birth to Petalstorm’s kits, Berrykit, Twigkit and Ivykit. Jaggedstripe moves into the nursery expecting Tuftfrost of ShadowClan’s kits.
Scorchfin passes away in his sleep while his son, Beechpelt, dies from a dog attack a few days later. Larchstripe, Petalstorm and Rockypaw are briefly taken by Two-legs before being rescued. Rockypaw earns his warrior name shortly after, becoming Rockyfoot alongside his siblings, Creekwillow and Perchfreeze. Rapidshine returns to her warrior duties as her kits become apprentices, Berrypaw mentored by Creekwillow, Twigpaw by Vinelight, and Ivypaw by Meadowleaf. Twigpaw and Hollypaw of ShadowClan begin secretly meeting at the border. Jaggedstripe gives birth to Tuftfrost’s daughters, Longkit and Sagekit. Foxskip moves into the nursery expecting Perchfreeze’s kits.
Rockyfoot decides he liked being a kittypet and leaves the clan to be one. Petalstorm gets hit by a monster (car) while following him. Gorsesun dies while scaring away the dog that killed Beechpelt. The apprentices become warriors named Ivyfall, Twigstorm and Berryshine. Jaggedstripe returns to being a warrior as her kits become apprentices, Longpaw mentored by Applewish and Sagepaw by Thrushspots. Foxskip gives birth to Perchfreeze’s daughter, Mousekit.
Larchstripe dies from greencough. Vinelight disappears one day and a patrol goes out to look for him. Their scent leads them to a group of wild rogues who attack them, wounding Waterstar deeply. The rogues leave, Vinelight among them. Waterstar dies of blood loss later on. Mumblesong becomes Mumblestar, leader of RiverClan. He appoints Minkstep as deputy. The apprentices become warriors named Longfoot and Sagefrost. Foxskip returns to her warrior duties as her daughter becomes an apprentice, Mousepaw, trained by Rapidshine. Thrushspots gives birth to Amberstream’s kits, Beechkit, Eggkit and Dewkit. Berryshine gives birth to Creekwillow’s kits, Rushkit, Sedgekit and Bouncekit.
Meadowleaf dies while defending Mousepaw from a fox. A few moons later, Mousepaw becomes a warrior named Mousehop. Thrushspots and Berryshine return to their warrior duties as their kits become apprentices, Rushpaw trained by Perchfreeze, Sedgepaw by Applewish, Bouncepaw by Briarfern, Beechpaw by Jaggedstripe, Eggpaw by Foxskip, and Dewpaw by Sagefrost. Longfoot gives birth to Ivyfall’s kits, Gingerkit and Tumblekit.
