So, in the United States woodchucks are mostly only found in the eastern states, though in the north their range extends throughout Canada and into Alaska. The Western US doesn't really have them. Instead, we have the venerable yellow-bellied marmot, also known as the rockchuck.

They can and do, in order to organize dense forest understory, piles of accumulated desert plants or even human-made woodpiles into defensible burrows to raise their kits in and hibernate over winter. The amount of wood a woochuck can chuck is limited more by the amount of wood available for it to chuck, rather than the woodchuck's ability to chuck that wood and I have seen some fairly impressive landscaping by them before. The one in my Uncle Bobby's yard in ohio has easily chucked over 500lbs of wood in one season in order to make the slash pile into his family fortress.

In a strange turn of events, a fishing trip became a hunting trip, and I had to reel in my first #chuck . The fishing had cooled off, and rusty here decided to make an appearance. His mistake was assuming he wasn't being watched #imthecaptainnow👀 . I put down my rod, and retrieved my rifle from below deck. I waited for the right moment as the boat rolled in the waves...boom.
