Remembering The Iron Sheik and Jack Lee

Here is my combined remembrance of two celebrities we lost today:

Remembering The Iron Sheik 1942-2023

1985 Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff figures

Pro wrestler The Iron Sheik has died at 81. When I was a kid, I was into the WWF and this Iranian villain along with Nikolai Volkoff from Russia were the enemies to all-American Hulk Hogan. I had the Iron Sheik doll too. He had more than a few moments in pop culture: as a main character on the Sat. morning cartoon Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling; appearing in Cyndi Lauper’s “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” music video; and as part of the WWF music video “Land of 1000 Dances”. In 2010, I attended the Philadelphia Comic Con and I saw him and Volkoff at their booth. Didn’t talk to them, but it was cool seeing them in their costumes.

Remembering Jack Lee 1952-2023

Musician Jack Lee has died at 71. He was a founder of the 70s power pop band The Nerves. They were short-lived but their big claim to fame was their 1976 song “Hangin’ on the Telephone” that Lee wrote. A few years later it was covered by Blondie and became the opening track on Parallel Lines, their best album! The song was later covered by L7 and Def Leppard too.

Cindy Lauper - The Goonies 'R' Good Enough (Music video)

WWE Hall of Famer Captain Lou Albano reprises his role as the father of 80s pop icon Cindi Lauper in this music video for her song from the Steven Spielberg hit movie The Goonies.

The video starts out reminiscent of a live action version of Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling cartoon with Lauper and her family struggling to pay the bills on their service station when a limousine of heels turn up to repossess the property.

The heels consist of Former WWF champion Iron Shiek, Intercontinental Champion Rowdy Roddy Piper and The Hollywood Fashion Plate "Classy" Freddy Blassie, they are soon followed by Former WWF Women's Champion The Fabulous Moulah driving a truck with former WWF tag team champion Nikolai Volkoff sat on the back milking a fake cow for some reason.

Former AWA women's champion Wendi Richter also features in the video as a flower seller at the service station.

After a brief scuffle outside the family resign themselves to losing their business and start to pack up before Lauper, who herself was pivotal in the Rock 'n' Wrestling movement of the 80s and featured heavily in the build up to the inaugural Wrestlemania, discovers a hidden tunnel and a treasure map resulting in a zany Scooby Doo style chase sequence with the heels tracking her through a series of caves reminiscent of the ones in The Goonies movie.

My Top 4 Most Attractive Animated Men

Big John Studd (Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n Wrestling)

In my opinion, the cartoon version of Big John Studd is the most attractive animated man of all time! He is my favorite wrestler and my favorite character on the show. Everything about him is gorgeous and adorable - just like the real-life Studd. I want to tickle him SO badly! This man set the standard for my favorite type of tickle victim... A large, muscular, handsome brute with long, thick hair, a beard, and a cute personality.

John the Baptist (Greatest Heroes and Legends of The Bible)

John the Baptist is a famous Biblical figure. He was a prophet in the New Testament who told people about Jesus and baptized Jesus. He also happened to be Jesus' cousin. He appeared in the episode "The Miracles of Jesus." I love how the animators designed him with a large, bearish muscular body and long, thick dark brown hair and beard. I love everything about his appearance, and what a wonderful person he was.

Atlas (Hercules)

I love this version of Atlas. He is so handsome! He appears in the episode "Hercules and the Prince of Thrace." He is everything that I love in a tickle victim. He is so muscular, and he has got that beautiful long, thick brown hair and beard. I also love how gullible he is. This titan must hold up the sky for all eternity because he is being punished by Zeus. He starts out as chill and friendly but turns mean after being tricked by Hercules. Well, let's face it...holding up the sky for all eternity is a horrible punishment. It's easy to feel sorry for the man.

Atlas (Cyberchase)

Yes, another version of Atlas. This one is from the Cyberchase episode "Zeus on the Loose." There is just something about this guy. He is a tough titan general who endures the brutal punishment of holding up the sky for all eternity, but he is a big softie with ticklish toes. That is SO CUTE! He also has stinky feet which is funny. I like how he helps the Cyberchase gang escape from Cerberus the three-headed dog. This version of Atlas turns out to be nicer than the one from the Disney Hercules cartoon.

118: The Psychotic Turnbuckles // Lunar Chik

Lunar Chik The Psychotic Turnbuckles 1989, Rattlesnake

The Psychotic Turnbuckles were a Sydney-based garage/punk band active through the ‘80s and early ‘90s, and a good example of how time can blur a gag into a myth. The Turnbuckles (named for the points where the ropes in a boxing or wrestling ring are anchored to the posts) claimed they were former American professional wrestlers who’d turned to rock ‘n’ roll, and their Wikipedia page credulously restates this backstory, but I have my doubts. Despite using ring names and dressing in loud Macho Man-esque Zubaz tights and silly wigs (which just made them look like a hair band), there’s no evidence of any of the ‘buckles ever actually locking it up.

More probably they were doing a Handsome Dick Manitoba thing and riffing on the considerable rock ‘n’ wrestling crossover during the period. Over time, the joke was repeated often enough as fact, and it’s the story anyone taking a cursory look at the band comes away with. At any rate, they were probably a blast live, and some of their recordings (like buzzsaw debut EP Destroy Dull City) do a reasonable job of capturing a workaday party band in full lather. The EP I’ve got, Lunar Chik, isn’t one of their finest. The production’s a little cleaner than I’d like (especially the drums), and none of the originals rises to the level of the debut’s “Groove to the Eye” or their version of The Novas’ “The Crusher.” Our highlight is a serviceable cover of the Sonics’ “Strychnine,” but overall it’s neither as goofy as you’d want from a band pretending to be wrestlers, nor as much of a party.
