Masterpost | Roceit Week 2023 Masterpost
Summary: Roman is almost home! If only he could convince Janus to go with him.
Content Warnings: Off Screen Physical Fighting, Ambiguous/Open Ending, Hurt No Comfort, Near Death Experience, Flashbacks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roman broke through the tree line, panting. Before him rose an archway of stone, otherworldly in its construction. Well, otherworldly to him at least. Stones drifted through the air, and a wild energy buzzed around the clearing.
This was it. He was sure of it.
Yelling from behind him startled him out of his awe. Janus was still behind him, engaged in battle with whatever creatures had attacked them this time. He couldn’t leave him to fend for his own.
~~~
“Who are you and where have you taken me!”
“I haven’t taken you anywhere. You were already here when I got here.”
“Lies! I wasn’t in the woods, I was…”
“Can’t recall?”
“Shut up! I was… What have you done with my memories, snake!”
“Nothing at all. I simply found you sleeping, my prince.”
“Aha! How did you know I was a prince? You are holding me for ransom, aren’t you?”
“You wear a crown, stranger. It was simply a guess.”
“I demand you bring me back to my country this instance!”
“I can help you get home, your highness, but it is not something I can just make happen. It’s a long journey to make, through treacherous lands.”
“Why should I trust you to lead me anywhere?”
“What choice do you have?”
~~~
“I found it, Janus!” Roman called. He spotted the snake-man not far away, avoiding the claw strikes of a monster, then cutting it down with his sword.
“Wonderful!” he answered once the beast wasn’t moving anymore, though he continued to look around for more attackers. “Then leave!”
“I’m not leaving you to fend for yourself!”
“I can handle them. You’re their prey!”
“I will not abandon you!” Roman cried as he jumped on a creature running up to him.
“Foolish!” Janus hissed as he took on a monster of his own.
~~~
“As much as I hate to admit it, you are a reliable fighter.”
“What high praise! I’m honored to have your approval, your highness.”
“I was giving you a compliment, no need to be so passive aggressive.”
“Maybe you should rethink your own tone then.”
“Tsk. Whatever. I still don’t trust you.”
“I am well aware.”
~~~
“I think that was the last of them.”
“I can’t hear any more at least,” Janus agreed and wiped his sword clean on the hide of one of the creatures. “Let’s get you to the portal before we’re proven wrong.” Roman nodded and lead Janus to the spot he found earlier. He watched his companion as they entered the clearing and saw a look of recognition in Janus’ eyes.
“Yes, this is it. This will lead you to where you need to go.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. I can feel it.”
~~~
“Why are you helping me anyway?”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“I’m a stranger and we’ve been attacked daily because of me. Don’t think I haven’t noticed that they are aiming for me more than you.”
“No, it’s true. You are their target.”
“So why are you helping me if it puts you in danger?”
“Isn’t it the right thing to do?”
“You don’t strike me as the righteous type.”
“Maybe not.”
“Then why?”
“I’m not sure. I feel like I know what it’s like, to be lost in a world you know nothing of. And there’s something that’s telling me to bring you to safety, though I don’t know what it is.”
“What do you mean you feel like you know what it’s like? Either you have experienced it, or you didn’t?”
“I wouldn’t know. There’s little I remember from before.”
“Before what?”
“I don’t know. I know there was a before but… I don’t know when that was. I think I wasn’t always here, but I don’t know how long it’s been. I also don’t think you’re the first one like you I met but I also can’t remember if I truly did.”
“That’s… weird.”
“It’s what I’m used to. Maybe one day it will make sense.”
“You don’t sound that worried.”
“I’m not. It wouldn’t get me anywhere anyway, so why bother? I know there will be time when I remember but that time isn’t now.”
“And you just accept that?”
“Yes. It’s all I know, after all.”
~~~
“Janus, come with me,” Roman pleaded, holding on to Janus’ hands. The other shook his head.
“I can’t, my prince.”
“You don’t know that!”
“I do know.”
“No, you don’t! At least try! Please? For me?”
“I wish I could, Roman, but it’s not where I’m meant to go.”
“Who cares about that? I want you with me. I want you to go with me. I love you. So please, just try. I can’t leave you.”
~~~
“Janus! Wake up! Don’t you dare leave me alone!”
“Don’t cry, my prince. Everything will be alright.”
“You’re hurt!”
“Yes. And I will heal. I always do.”
“The… the scales? They’re glowing?”
“They’ll grow over the wound. Just give it a minute.”
“So… all the others?”
“Yes.”
“You scared me!”
“I didn’t mean to, my prince. I’ll be fine.”
“Don’t you dare jump in front of me like that ever again.”
“I will protect you if you are in danger.”
“You shouldn’t.”
“Why not?”
“Because I was an asshole to you. Why would you want to safe me?”
“Why are you crying for me, my prince?”
“Huh?”
“Why are you crying?”
“Because I care about you! Why else?!”
“Then you understand why I wish to protect you.”
“Wha-? Why would you care for someone like me?”
“How could I not?”
~~~
“Roman,” Janus mumbled, holding the prince’s face in his hands. “I know this is hard for you, but you need to go. Without me.”
“I don’t want to. If you don’t come with me, I’ll stay.”
“I can’t let you do that.”
“Why not? Why do you have to be left here all alone? Why do you insist on enduring this by yourself?!”
“You have people waiting for you, Roman. Your brother, your friends, your kingdom, remember? I’m not done here. I need to stay.” Roman was crying. He held on to the hands cupping his face tightly, afraid that Janus would vanish if he let him go.
“You don’t even know why you’re here! You’re sacrificing yourself for a simple feeling?! I can’t allow it! I won’t let you.”
“And I can’t let you interfere. I’m sorry.” Janus’ eyes started to glow and Roman quickly realized what he was attempting. He tried to break free of Janus’ grip, to break eye contact but he was too late. Janus’ spell was already taking effect.
“Don’t! Janus, please, don’t make me leave you!” he begged but despite Janus starting to cry as well, he didn’t stop.
“I am so sorry, my prince, but this is what needs to happen.”
“No! Please!”
“I’m sorry.” Janus took one last moment to take in Roman’s face before he spoke the command Roman wouldn’t be able to ignore: “Go home. Now.”
“Janus!” Roman cried as he was let go and his body moved by itself towards the portal. “I will find a way to get back to you, I swear!”
That was the last thing he said before he vanished in the swirling colors that had gathered in the archway. Janus watched the magic dissipate, still crying.
“I love you, too, my prince. I hope that if we meet again, I will be allowed to remember you.”
End the Crown Prince
Roceit Week 2023, Day 2: Assassination
Content Warning: Knives, Killing (mentioned), Attempt assassination
Author's Note: This was supposed to be really long but I was straying too far from like, the actual prompt so I just made it an open-ending.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
There was a masquerade ball being held in the castle celebrating the crown prince's 21st birthday. Nobles and other royalties from all around the realm are going to attend, for this will also be the time that the Crown Prince will choose the person he will be betrothed with as his future spouse. Everyone right now will be busy preparing for the celebration, a perfect way for him to enter the palace without suspicion. He was hired by a secret society to assassinate Prince Roman, the crown prince of the kingdom. Janus had been studying Prince Roman's every move for months, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.
Janus stepped out of the carriage on the royal driveway. The palace doors were wide open and the people were milling about the area, getting ready for the evening festivities. He was disguising himself as a duke from a faraway kingdom so that everyone would assume he was just one of the guests attending the ball. He adjusts his mask slightly and then walked towards the castle entrance. He walked into the palace gates and felt a slight sense of unease. He had never before attempted assassination in such a high-profile event and the risks were at an all-time high. Despite this, he ignored his anxieties and reminded himself that he must carry on with his mission.
The palace was more magnificent than he had envisioned, with stunning chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling and golden ornaments embellishing every wall. Janus had to focus on his objective and not let himself get distracted by the grandeur of his surroundings.
He walked through the crowded halls, carefully observing the guests as he passed by. Eventually, he spotted the crown prince, Roman, socializing with the other guests from a distance. He spotted the crown prince, Roman, in the distance, mingling with the other guests. Now all Janus needs to do is formulate a plan to approach the crown prince and distract him away. His mind flashed through various scenarios and it appeared like one would have the most success. He must charm the crown prince and keep him occupied enough until midnight.
Janus took a deep breath and approached the prince with a calm and confident demeanor. As he drew near, he saw Roman's eyes flicker over to him with curiosity. Janus put on his best smile and introduced himself as a foreign duke attending the ball.
"Salutations, your Highness. I am Janus Cassidy, Duke of Delvor. It is a pleasure finally meeting you face to face." Janus purred as he bowed slightly. "Prince Roman Goldenberg. And likewise," Roman replied with a grin. Roman seemed intrigued by the newcomer, and Janus knew he had to keep up his act to maintain the prince's attention.
Janus straightened his posture as he spoke once again, " I wish you a happy birthday, Prince Roman. Though I apologize, I have not brought any gifts with me.".
"That's quite alright, Lord Janus. Material things are unnecessary, your presence here is enough," Roman said sincerely with a bright smile. Janus couldn't help but feel a little taken aback by the prince's kind words. He had expected the crown prince to be arrogant and entitled, like many of the other royals he had encountered. But there is more than meets the eye.
Their conversation was cut short when the announcer announced, "Let us begin the dance!". Immediately, everyone started clapping and cheering and music filled the grand hall while servants carried around trays filled with liquor. Roman raised his glass in acknowledgment of the cheers, but his gaze quickly went back down to the duke. He sets his glass down on the nearest table and offered his hand to Janus, " May I have this dance with you, Lord Janus?" Roman asked.
Janus grinned, " Of course, the pleasure is mine, Your Highness.".
As they danced, Janus continued to keep up his charming facade, making small talk and complimenting the prince on the grandeur of the ball. Roman seemed to enjoy his company, and Janus was starting to, as well. But he must not stray away from the mission he was tasked with, tonight, he shall kill the crown prince. He can't afford distraction.
As the night wore on, he and the prince were now on the balcony. The prince was trying to escape the many princes, princesses, and other nobles trying to court him that night. Roman was telling Janus his woes of having to choose a spouse.
"They simply do not understand that I take no interest in them! I am not ready for marriage, yet they persist. How annoying!" Roman exclaimed dramatically as he leaned on the railing of the balcony. He looked out to the grounds below them, "Being a crown prince is a hassle, there are too many responsibilities to keep up with.". He sighed and turned back to Janus. "How about you, Lord Janus? Tell me about yourself. I've been talking too much of myself, I might've looked quite egotistical to you.".
"I don't think so, your Highness. It's nice hearing you talk." Janus replied nonchalantly. Roman chuckled and smiled softly, "Thank you, I'm glad to hear that". Janus notices a small blush tinting on the prince's cheek, his plan is working well. A few minutes later, Roman speaks up again. "So uh, tell me about yourself. I'd like to know you more, Duke Janus.". There was a hint of curiosity lingering in the prince's voice.
Janus quickly concocted a believable story at the prince's question, "I come from a small kingdom far from here, Your Highness. Our land is rich in natural resources, particularly in precious stones and minerals. As a duke, I oversee the mining operations and the trade of these valuable resources. It's a modest life, but one that I find fulfilling." Janus answered with a smile.
Roman seemed fascinated by Janus' story and asked more questions about his kingdom and his life as a duke. Janus answered them all with ease, never faltering in his made-up story. However, he was constantly reminded of his true purpose for being there. The clock was ticking, and he had to make his move soon.
As the night grew late, the guests started to leave one by one. Janus saw this as his opportunity to make his move. He had noticed that the crown prince was already enamored by him, how naive. While the crown prince was babbling on and on about something Janus did not bother to listen to, Janus slowly drew out the dagger that he hid and leaned close to Roman as if trying to kiss him.
Roman notices the duke leaning closer to him and his face grew redder and redder. "May I kiss you, your Highness? I've been wanting to do this all night," Janus whispered in Roman's ear. Roman's heart raced as he felt the duke's warm breath on his ear. He was taken aback by the sudden question, but the look in Janus' eyes was so intense that he couldn't resist. So, he nodded his head and leaned closer. His lips were so soft against his own...
Janus felt a foreign feeling in his heart, one that he had never experienced before. A tingle spread throughout his body that caused him to drop his dagger below the balcony and wrapped his arms around the prince's neck loosely. Everything else faded to white noise, nothing else mattered except for this kiss. Maybe Janus can put his mission aside for just one night and indulge himself a bit at this moment.
Janus continued with his façade as a duke and still tried to assassinate the prince he always end up failing at his mission because he found himself conflicted between his mission and his growing feelings for Roman. He couldn't deny the strong attraction he had towards the prince, and the guilt of betraying his trust weighed heavily on his conscience. Eventually he had to admit all of this.
I Still Recognize You
I'm trying to catch up! Here's day three of @roceit2023, hope you enjoy 🥰
Here on Ao3
Masterpost | Roceit Week 2023 Masterpost
Summary: Roman is waiting for his partner at a Masquerade Ball. Then he spots the most gorgeous person he's ever seen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roman excused himself from the conversation he’d been having with two acquaintances to get himself a drink. He’d arrived at the party about an hour ago and despite the masks, he had already found a few old friends in the crowd. There was one person he knew would be coming and was looking forward to seeing the most that he had yet to spot: his partner Janus.
He had wanted to come together of course but for some reason Janus had insisted on meeting him at the party. Why, they didn’t explain but after noticing Roman’s disappointment they had assured him that it was a surprise that Roman was going to enjoy greatly, so he had agreed. But finding Janus had proven difficult so far (though they might have just not arrived yet), so after grabbing a drink, Roman searched for a spot that would give him a good overview of the room.
Thankfully he found a quiet corner where he could take a few moments to just observe the crowd. As he was taller than most other guests it was unnecessary to find a higher place. He stood there and sipped his drink for a few minutes before he spotted a person in the most gorgeous outfit he had ever seen.
The person wore an elegant yellow and black dress that fit their figure perfectly. Their long blonde hair flowed along their back like a river of gold with a few decorations weaved between the strands that sparkled from afar. The mask the person wore fit the color scheme of the dress and formed a butterfly that hid their face from the nose up. The figure moved through the crowd with effortless elegance that seemed so familiar to Roman and before he even realized it, he was making his way towards the person.
He caught up with them at the bar and cleared his throat to get their attention.
“Good evening,” he greeted politely when they turned around. “Would you give me the honor of a dance with you?”
The person chuckled before taking a sip out of a glass they had just received from the bartender.
“My, aren’t you forward?” they teased and Roman, who had already been very sure of their identity, instantly recognized the voice.
Janus.
“I apologize, but you looked so gorgeous, I simply couldn’t help myself,” he said with a slight bow, causing his partner to chuckle again.
“You are such a flatterer. Very well, let’s dance.” They emptied their glass quickly and grabbed the hand Roman was offering. With a grin, Roman pulled them on the dancefloor and they began to waltz.
“You really do look absolutely beautiful, my dear,” Roman commented when he was sure that he could keep the rhythm without much thought. Janus laughed quietly.
“Thank you, you look quite handsome yourself. I must say, I didn’t think you would recognize me this fast. I’ve only been here for five minutes.”
“As if I wouldn’t recognize you just because you wear a dress.”
“It’s more than just a dress, darling. You’ve hardly seen me with my hair down and I’m wearing a mask. Plus, I have heels that make me at least a few inches taller.”
“Maybe, but there was just something about the way you moved that felt so familiar.”
“They way I move?” Janus asked and even though they were hidden behind the mask, Roman know they raised their eyebrows.
“Yes. So elegant and confident. Drew me towards you immediately.”
“I see. Again, I’m flattered.”
“I should be the one flattered, having you as my partner.”
“I don’t mind you calling me your girlfriend tonight.” Roman could see Janus flush and smiled fondly.
“So I finally get to meet you on a feminine day, huh? I’m honored.”
“Shut up.” Janus flushed deeper and Roman kissed her cheek.
“I mean it. I am so thankful that you feel comfortable enough around me to be who you are. I know that’s not easy for you.”
“Thank you. I’m really glad I bought the dress; it makes me feel great. Even if I probably wouldn’t have had the courage to come without the mask.”
“And that’s fine,” Roman hummed, pulling Janus closer and slowing their movements. “Whatever you’re comfortable with.”
“I love you,” Janus said and there was so much relieve in her voice that Roman couldn’t help but press a kiss to her lips.
“I love you, too.”

Prove it
Roceit Week 2023, Day 3: Masquerade/Party/Dance
Content Warning: None
Author's Note: I had fun writing this one specifically, hope yall like it. The other day I wrote Janus being a gay mess now have Roman ;]
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
One of Roman's friends was throwing a fancy ball-like party for her birthday and as soon as he received the invitation, he was over the moon. Of course, he can't pass up an opportunity like this. He had to go! And he spent the day before the party going around the mall looking for a gift to give to his friend and for something extravagant to wear, he's got to slay at that party. After hours of searching, Roman finally found the perfect gift and outfit for the party. He bought a beautiful necklace with a matching set of earrings for her friend and him, he bought a glamorous and slick white and red suit and a few accessories.
When the big day arrived, Roman is practically bouncing off the walls with happiness. The whole time on the way there the thought keeps floating through his head and it is how excited he is to attend such a party. And now here he was;
"Wow!" Roman exclaimed as he stepped inside the party venue. The place was stunning, with twinkling lights, lush flower arrangements, and a grand chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Even though the party wasn’t very crowded yet, everyone seemed extremely busy doing their own thing, talking among themselves or mingling together. Once he spotted his friend, who was wearing a stunning ball gown and made his way over to her.
"Happy Birthday, !" he said, presenting her with the gift. She unwrapped it eagerly and let out a gasp of delight when she saw the necklace and earrings. "Oh my gosh, Roman, these are beautiful! Thank you so much!"
Roman grinned, "You're welcome," he said.
He then added, "Wow, this place is wonderful, Diane. And you look stunning in that gown, it's giving Cinderella vibes!" Roman giggles.
Diane laughed, "Thanks, Roman! I'm so glad you could make it. And you look amazing too, that suit is so unique and eye-catching!". Roman grinned at her complimenting words.
" Anyway, I can't stay long, Ro. I have to maintain the other guests and stuff. Enjoy yourself!" Diane told him and pressed a kiss on his cheek. Roman nodded, "Alright, good luck birthday girl." He watched his friend disappear into the crowd with a soft smile before walking towards the buffet table. As he was browsing through all those snacks, when he suddenly heard, “My my, fancy seeing you here, Roman~”.
Roman whipped around to find his one and only rival, Janus. He was Diane's older brother and Roman's long-term archnemesis. Roman's smile immediately faded at the sight of him. Janus was leaning against the table, arms crossed and a smug smirk on his face. "Janus," Roman greeted him coolly. "Nice to see you here as well." He says with a hint of sarcasm.
"I loooove your suit by the way, you look like a walking candy cane," Janus remarked, his smirk widening. Roman resisted the urge to roll his eyes. He knew Janus was just trying to get under his skin. "Thanks, I guess," he replied, trying to keep his tone neutral. He then looked up and down at Janus, "Thank you, look like a proper villain in that suit." he retorted, not able to resist the opportunity for a comeback. Janus raised an eyebrow and smirked even wider. "Touche, Roman," he said.
Roman and Janus resumed their small-talk conversation, competing with one another's witty remarks. Roman made an effort to ignore Janus' remarks and concentrate on having fun at the party, but Janus' presence just served to irritate him more.
Roman found himself roaming about the party area as it continued, taking in the décor and watching people dance. He even began conversing with some of Diane's friends and enjoying himself. But every so often, he would catch a glimpse of Janus, who was always lurking in the shadows and sporting the same smug grin. God, he really was some villain wannabe. Roman couldn't help but feel like Janus was purposely trying to ruin his night. But he wasn't going to let him succeed. He was going to enjoy himself no matter what.
As the night wore on, Roman found himself dancing with some lovely stranger along with other people on the dance floor. He was having a great time and completely forgot about Janus' presence.
"Mind if I cut in?"
Speak of the devil.
Roman excused himself from his dance partner and turned around to face Janus. Roman narrowed his eyes at the other male, "What do you want?" he asked. Janus raised his hands in a placating gesture. "Just wanted to dance with you, Roman. Don't be so hostile," he said with a smirk. Roman wasn't buying it. He knew Janus too well to trust him. "I'll pass," he replied curtly.
"What? You're too afraid to have a lil dance with me or you just don't know how to dance?" Janus taunted. Roman glared at him, "For your information, I KNOW how to dance.". Janus chuckled, "Prove it then." He held out his hand, gesturing for Roman to take it. Roman hesitated for a moment, considering the offer. He was going to show Janus how amazing he is at dancing. Finally, Roman took Janus' hand and pulled him closer as they began to dance.
Janus places a hand on Roman's shoulder while the other one holds Roman's hand. Roman placed his free hand on Janus' hip as they both danced to the music. Roman tried his best to ignore Janus' smug grin and focus on the dance. He moved gracefully, twirling Janus around and dipping him. For a moment, Roman almost forgot that he was dancing with his arch-nemesis.
Roman couldn't help but feel a strange mixture of anger and attraction towards Janus as they moved to the music. Janus' hand on his shoulder felt firm, and his other hand holding onto Roman's was warm and steady. Roman had to admit, Janus was a good dancer, but he refused to let him know that. Instead, he tried to outdo him with his moves. Despite their rivalry and dislike for each other, he couldn't deny that there was something alluring about Janus. His scent, the way his body moved against Roman's, the heat that radiated from him; it was all so intoxicating. Roman's heart was beating faster and he could feel his body responding to Janus' touch.
Janus leaned in close to Roman's ear, his breath hot against his skin. "You're a good dancer," he murmured, his voice low and husky. Roman shuddered at the sensation, his eyes fluttering closed. He couldn't believe he was feeling this way about his rival.
"Thanks," Roman replied, trying to sound nonchalant. "You're not so bad yourself."
After dancing for a while longer, the song changed. They stopped their movements and Roman reluctantly released Janus' hold on him. Janus smiled playfully, causing Roman to blush slightly. Roman cleared his throat.
"Well, looks like we're done here," he said as he averted his eyes from Janus.
Janus raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?" he said, stepping closer to Roman. "Don't you want to dance again?". Roman took a step back, trying to maintain some distance between them. "I think I've had enough dancing for tonight," he said, his voice a little shaky. Janus chuckled. "I'm quite disappointed, Roman," he said. "But if that's what you want, I won't force you to dance anymore."
Roman nodded, feeling relieved. He turned to leave but felt Janus grab his arm. He turned back to face him, his heart racing. Janus leaned in close, his lips hovering just inches away from Roman's. "You know, Roman," Janus whispered, his eyes locking onto Roman's. "I think there's more between us than just a rivalry."
Roman's breath caught in his throat. He felt a surge of conflicting emotions, unsure of what to do or say. Janus' lips brushed against his own, sending a jolt of electricity through his body. "I'll see you around, Roman," Janus said, pulling away and giving him a sly smile before walking away.
Roman stood there, rooted to the spot, watching Janus disappear into the crowd. He was left with a million thoughts swirling through his head. He didn't know what to make of what had just happened, but he knew one thing for sure; things between him and Janus were far from over

Our High School Musical Moment
Back on track with @roceit2023. This is the longest one yet, have fun! 💛💖
Here on Ao3
Masterpost | Roceit Week 2023 Masterpost
Summary: Roman auditions for a gay production of High School musical and is immediately smitten by his duet partner.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roman lightly jumped up and down, trying to get his nervousness under control. This might just be the worst he’s felt before an audition, probably because it was a role he had wanted to play since childhood.
Troy Bolton.
He had fallen in love with High School Musical the first time he watched it and continued to see it again and again, never tiring of it. Having a crush on Zac Efron didn’t help. And now his college was doing a queer production of the musical with a gay romance at the center. Gabriella was now Gabriel – not the most creative choice but why chose something else if there was a clear answer in front of you.
Roman would take any role, really, but he had to try his luck at getting the lead.
“Roman Prince for Troy Bolton and Janus Drake as Gabriel Montez, please join us on stage!” The casting director called. Roman took a deep breath and made his way from the audience up on stage. The other person that had been called, Janus, came from the other side of the room with confident strides that Roman envied. He just hoped that his hands weren’t shaking as much as he feared.
“Thank you for coming, you two,” the director, who had introduced himself as Anton earlier, greeted them both when they made it over to him. “Do you know each other by chance?” Roman just shook his head while Janus replied with a simple: “No.”
“That’s fine. Take a moment to meet each other, harmonize if that’ll make it easier and then give us your best ‘Breaking Free’ performance. Just give a sign to Angela at the piano over there when you’re ready.” Anton motioned to a brown-haired girl sitting at a grand piano stage left who gave them a quick wave.
“Will do,” Roman nodded and Anton patted him on the shoulder.
“That’s what I like to hear. Just make it quick, there’s others still waiting.” He hopped off stage and Roman turned to Janus who was looking him up and down. Their eyes met and Roman was stunned by the beautiful green on the right and deep brown on the left.
“Hi,” he said breathlessly before catching himself and tagging on: “I’m Roman, I’m a theater major.”
“Janus. Law major on my parents’ insistence.” Janus held his hand out for Roman to shake. He did so and noticed Janus wearing gloves on both hands but kept his questions to himself. Right now was not the time.
“Right, so wanna do a quick voice warm-up?”
“Very well.”
They took a minute to vocalize together and Roman found that they complimented each other quite well, which Janus couldn’t refute.
“Are you ready?” Janus asked then.
“As I’ll ever be,” Roman answered after taking another deep breath. Janus watched him critically for a moment but motioned for Angela to begin anyway. The first chords filled the air and Roman’s nervousness finally flew out the window.
He knew this song by heart. He sung it a million times before. He got this.
We’re soarin’, flyin’
There’s not a star in heaven
That we can’t reach
Roman had to hold back from imitating Zac’s gesturing since he often did so when watching the movie but he was here to present his own version of Troy Bolton. He did stand close to Janus however and lightly touched his arm, to reassure Gabriel the way his Troy would do. Janus had given him permission to be a bit touchy, it was part of acting after all.
If we’re trying
So we’re breaking free
Janus’ voice was so soft, it almost startled Roman out of the moment. His acting was on point, his expression and posture truly looking like he had as bad a case of stage fright as Gabriel did, but Roman knew even from the few moments they talked before the song that Janus was definitely used to the stage. He quickly had to shake himself out of his thoughts to not miss his next lines.
You know the world can see us
In a way that’s different than who we are
Janus stepped away from during his next part and Roman felt compelled to follow him but resisted. He needed to focus!
Creating space between us
‘Til we’re separate hearts.
‘He looks so damn sad!’ Roman thought, a bit envious of Janus’ talent. But he was sure he could keep up with him if he could. Just. Concentrate!
But your faith it gives me strength
Strength to believe
Their voices melded together perfectly and finally, Roman couldn’t help but get wrapped up as the chorus began.
We’re breaking free!
The rest of the song passed like a blur for Roman. He let his body take full control, stopped thinking, and just enjoyed the performance. Dancing with Janus was effortless and soon the were on the last few lines.
You know the world can see us
Roman and Janus were facing each other, staring into each other’s eyes and Roman felt a very strong urge to pull him into a kiss.
In a way that’s different than who we are
The last chords echoed through the room. Roman and Janus were both breathing heavily. Roman leaned closer. Janus didn’t move away.
Applause.
Roman flinched away and Janus seemed to equally startle out of the moment.
“That was great, thank you!” Anton announced, suddenly back on stage. “Go back to your seats, please!”
In a bit of a daze, Roman let himself be shooed of the stage and returned to his seat in the audience. He tried to spot Janus but couldn’t make him out in the crowd. Maybe that was for the best, he needed a moment to collect himself.
The rest of the auditions passed by quickly and soon Anton announced that he would publish the chosen cast online the next week. Roman gathered his stuff and made his way out of the auditorium. He caught a glimpse of Janus and made the impulse decision to go after him.
“Hey, Janus!” he called as soon as he figured he was in ear shot. Janus turned around and raised an eyebrow.
“Roman. What gives me the pleasure of you running after me?”
“Um…” Roman hesitated for a moment. Was he really about to ask this guy out who was basically a stranger to him?
Fuck it. Yeah, he was.
“Would you like to grab a coffee with me sometime?” Janus’ other brow rose in surprise.
“You’re asking me out on a date?”
“Yes.”
“We just met. We barely talked.”
“I know. And I want to get to know you better. If you allow me, of course.”
Janus looked him up and down, hummed and then shrugged.
“Sure, why not. Give me your phone.” Roman did as he was asked, stunned that that had actually worked.
Janus handed him his phone back moments later.
“I look forward to hearing from you, Roman,” he said with a wink, turned around and walked away. Roman watched him and resisted the urge to jump up and down in excitement. He could do that when he was back in his dorm.
Roman made his way back with a smile. Maybe he was more like Troy Bolton than he thought.
Janus cant cook shit
Roceit Week 2023, Day 4: Comfort
Content Warning: Food mention
Author's Note: Ngl, i just recycled this lil thing. Idk if it relates to the prompt but meh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Hope y'all like it though!
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
He was almost done writing his script, now all he had to do was proofread and revise and he will be done with it in no time. Roman just needed to add some extra dialogue and other details so it would be perfectly perfect. But it seems that destiny wouldn't let him do so when he suddenly heard a loud thud and clattering coming from the kitchen followed by a foul smell... was something burning!? Well, this is not good… he thought. He immediately got up from his chair and rushed to the kitchen to check out the situation there, but what greeted him on the other side made him stop dead on his track. He froze like a statue and just stared at the scene before him.
“What the hell are you doing?” Roman asked incredulously as he watched his lover, Janus gingerly trying to put out a small fire that was raging in the pan on top of the stove, dumping a glass of water on it and completely extinguishing the fire before looking at Roman. And Roman had just noticed what Janus' current state was. He didn't have his bowler hat on and his hair was a mess, half covered with what looked like flour. The apron he was wearing was stained and dirtied and so were his clothes for some reason.
"... hi. I was just, cooking you something, darling." Janus said nonchalantly, leaning close on the counter and batting their eyelashes at their boyfriend. "I might have made a slight mess in the kitchen though". They added sheepishly.
" Jan... You almost burned down our kitchen." Roman sighed exasperatedly, shaking his head and pinching the bridge of his nose between his index finger and thumb. "And how did you even get that butter up the ceiling!?" He wondered aloud and pointed at the ceiling, where said butter was.
Janus blinked owlishly for a moment at him, "Magic?—".
Roman sighs again and approached his beloved, " Why are you even cooking? Not gonna lie, you suck at it.". That made Janus pause for a bit and he pouted at Roman, "Well, duh. Cooking isn't my thing... I was trying to do something for you." He says and Roman has to bite his lip to keep from smiling. It seemed like Janus did try to do something for him, but it seemed like they did not succeed at that.
“You didn’t need to cook me anything," They said coyly fluttered their eyelashes once more, making Roman smile fondly. "You can, but next time, don't burn down the kitchen." He says as he gently places his hands on Janus' hips.
"You're starting to sound like Logan–"
"Oh shut up, bananaconda."
"But actually though, what were you trying to cook?" Roman added curiously, looking at Janus intently, his gaze softening a little. Janus looked away and blushed, hiding behind his hair.
"Oh... it's something you like," Janus replied with an almost shy smile. "I was trying to cook your favorite pasta. Had to ask Patton for the recipe."  They admitted sheepishly and Roman felt like melting on the spot. Janus wanted to cook him his favorite dish.  Well, he didn't know if he deserved this kind of treatment after everything. But then again, he couldn't help but think about it. Maybe Janus does care about him.
"Goddamn, I love you." Roman blurts out as he stared lovingly at Janus who looked away again, embarrassed at Roman's sudden outburst but also happy. Roman leaned forward and kissed their cheek, "Come here, let's clean the kitchen then I can help you cook the pasta.". He murmured softly.
•••
The aroma of marinara sauce filled the kitchen as it was heated up in a pan, Roman was stirring it carefully while Janus watched him like a lovestruck fool (which he indeed is). Roman hummed happily as he stirred the sauce while Janus stood right beside him. Roman glanced sideways at his beloved, "Are you just going to stand there and be pretty instead of giving me a hand?" Roman asked playfully.
"Why yes~" Janus purred and wrapped his arm around Roman's waist to pull him closer, resting his chin on Roman's shoulder. "I love a man who can cook. And I absolutely adore seeing this side of you where you're not being loud and obnoxious, it feels surreal." He added with a teasing smile. Roman rolled his eyes but smiled anyway.
"Are you trying to insult me, Janus?" Roman asks amused and turns off the burner before he turns towards Janus, placing their foreheads together, "If that's the case then I'm afraid you're going to have to pay a price for it." Roman threatened as his hands slowly moved upwards to cup their face tenderly, caressing it with a soft touch. Janus leaned closer to try and kiss Roman but the other suddenly pulled away.
"Anyway, why don't you get the pasta for me, mi amor?" Roman suggested with a cheeky smile on his lips. Janus huffed in slight annoyance after being left hanging but complied, walking over to the counter where they left aside the pasta and handing it over to Roman.  Roman took it and thanked him before continuing to prepare the marinara pasta.
"I, for one, didn't even think you had the ability to cook," Janus commented as he hopped onto the counter while they continue to admire each other.
Roman hums in response, getting some plates from the cupboards. "How so". He questioned and Janus shrugged nonchalantly before replying. “I don't know… I thought you're too much of a dumbass to know how to cook.”. Janus snickered at the end and Roman turned to glare at them softly. "Hey!" He protested softly and Janus giggled. "Stop laughing at me." He grumbled, causing Janus to burst out in laughter. Roman was quick to follow, joining Janus in laughter.
When their laughter subsided, Roman spoke again. "Anyway, I'm done with the pasta, why don't you try it?" He says, setting a plate of marinara pasta beside Janus before handing him a fork. Janus takes the offered utensil and dug into the food, making a noise of delight when they tasted it. Roman grinned as he watched Janus eat.
"Is it good?"
"No, it sucks." Janus chirps but continued to eat the pasta. Roman looked at him unimpressed by his answer.
Janus smirked, waving the other off. "Of-fucking-course, it tastes good. It's delicious, like the cook." He teased him playfully. "Mmhm… sure…" Roman scoffed and rolled his eyes as Janus giggled. He then took the fork from Janus' hand (earning him a complaint from the other) and tasted the pasta.
"It is indeed, delicious. I'm such a great cook, unlike a certain snek boi." Roman grins proudly while side-eyeing the deceitful façet who let out a gasp at his statement. "Excuse you! How dare you accuse me of being a terrible cook!" Janus whined with mock offense. "I still haven't shown my hidden cooking skill yet!".
"Oh yeah?" Roman raised an eyebrow challengingly at them, crossing his arms across his chest. "Almost burning down the kitchen is definitely a cooking skill." he points out with amusement and Janus let out another whine pouting playfully. "Oh, you wound me, Roman! How could you!" He exclaimed dramatically, causing Roman to laugh again.
Janus jumped off the counter and wrapped his arms around the other's neck. "But I guess I can't deny the fact that you are an amazing cook," Janus admits, looking up at Roman with a soft smile. Roman chuckled and wrapped his arms around Janus' waist.
"Good, because I plan on cooking for you more often," Roman said with a grin. "And maybe teach you too, heh.". Janus leaned in and placed a kiss on Roman's lips, causing the other to blush.
"I would love that," Janus said, pressing a feather-light kiss on the other's jaw. They pulled away from each other after a moment and went to eat the pasta they cooked then clean up the kitchen, the two of them working in comfortable silence.
As they finished up, Janus leaned against the counter and watched as Roman washed the dishes. "You know, I'm glad we did this," Janus said, breaking the silence. "It was nice to spend time with you like this.". Roman looked up at him and smiled. "I'm glad too, Janus. I always have a good time with you."
Janus smiled back and walked over to Roman, wrapping his arms around the other's waist. "I love you," Janus whispered, resting his head against Roman's shoulder.
Roman wrapped his arms around Janus and leaned into him. "I love you too," he replied, pressing a kiss to Janus' forehead. The two of them stayed like that for a moment, enjoying each other's company before finally pulling away and finishing up the last of the dishes.
Masterpost | Roceit Week 2023 Masterpost
Summary: Janus is late for his teatime with the prince. Roman makes his displeasure known.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“My apologies, my prince,” Janus said smoothly as he took his seat opposite of Roman. “My meeting went longer than anticipated.”
“I’d think as the prince I would have higher priority than some meeting,” Roman quipped and Janus could immediately tell he was in a sour mood.
“Of course, your highness. That’s why they let me go as soon as I mentioned that you were waiting for me.”
“Then why are you late?”
“Because there was business to deal with first but as soon as the discussion moved to more trivial topics, I excused myself.”
Roman frowned but didn’t press further, instead taking a bite of the cake on his plate. Janus took that as permission to start enjoying teatime. He lifted his cup to his lips and took a sip. He could see Roman watched him out of the corner of his eye.
Suspicious.
A second later he could taste why. It was subtle, but he knew how this tea was supposed to taste like and it was just ever so slightly off.
Poison.
Janus sighed and put his cup down.
“Trying to assassinate me again, my prince? What is it that is bothering you this time?” Roman huffed but kept quiet. Annoyed by the prince’s behavior but not willing to show it, Janus controlled the urge to roll his eyes and instead examined his state.
He was starting to feel a bit lightheaded, but it was only just noticeable. A slow acting poison then and not that potent. Even without an antidote, he might survive. Still, he pulled a vial out of his coat pocket that should neutralize it and drank it while keeping eye contact with Roman. The prince didn’t react.
From his behavior, Janus could guess that Roman wasn’t all that mad. If he had been, he would have resorted to more direct forms of assassinations. Janus could still remember the arrow that missed him by a hair when Roman was upset about Janus returning a week late from a diplomatic trip.
If Roman was truly displeased with him, he would make it known more directly.
No, this was a simpler issue, one that the prince wasn’t as willing to admit to.
Something he’s insecure about.
Roman finally broke the staring match they had unintentionally started, his cheeks tinted slightly pink. Janus narrowed his eyes and watched as the prince started to squirm.
“My prince, the sooner you tell me what’s wrong, the sooner we can address it.”
Roman mumbled something too quietly for Janus to hear.
“I can’t understand you, your highness, please speak up.”
“You’ve been distant lately and I don’t like it.”
Janus blinked, perplexed. When he didn’t respond, Roman started rambling.
“You always have meetings, you never eat with me anymore, I can’t find you half the time, you go out for days without telling me and when we do meet, you almost always come late! And you don’t call me by name anymore.” The last part Roman said very quietly, but Janus just managed to understand him.
He thought back to the recent weeks and realized that the prince was right. He had been so busy that he was on the move almost constantly and when he did manage to make time for Roman it was rather limited. And in all that stress he must have unconsciously defaulted back to formally addressing Roman.
No wonder he had been hurt.
“I apologize, Roman,” Janus sighed, leaning back in his chair and relaxing his posture for once. “There has been so much going on, I didn’t consider how that was affecting you as well.”
Roman chewed on his lip and slowly shook his head.
“I know that. And I get that it’s been stressful, I’ve had more to do as well. It’s just… It’s been affecting me more than usual for some reason and I don’t know why and that just built up more frustration. I just want to take a break. With you.”
Janus smiled.
“That sounds wonderful, my dear.” He gently took Roman’s hand in his. “I can clear my schedule for the day and you can drag me wherever you want.”
“You would do that?”
“Of course. Anything for my prince.”

Masterpost | Roceit Week 2023 Masterpost
Summary: Roman and Janus are growing old together. Sometimes Janus just forgets how time flies, like leaves on the wind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roman found his husband sitting outside on the porch swing overlooking their backyard. Janus was wrapped up in his favorite blanket and wore a beanie to protect his ears from the chilly winds of autumn. He didn’t notice Roman closing the door leading into their living room with his arm, both hands holding cups of tea.
“There you are, my darling knight,” Roman called out softly to draw Janus’ attention without startling him. Soon his eyes were met by the one deep brown right and milky white left eye of his husband. Janus had been blind on his one eye long before they met each other in college and while there was almost nothing Roman didn’t know about him, the details of that particular accident Janus had never been willing to share.
Janus didn’t greet Roman back until he had taken a seat beside him, holding out one of the cups for his husband to take.
“Thank you, dear.” The words were barely above a whisper but Roman could hear them just fine. He leaned back into the swing, pulling a blanket of his own over his legs and sipped his tea, just enjoying the silence for a moment. They watched the red, yellow and orange leaves dance on the wind, slightly leaning against each other, knowing that they needed to talk but leaving it for a little later, to enjoy the peace and quiet of the moment.
“I feel like the firm is becoming louder every day,” Janus eventually spoke up. Roman glanced over to him but his husband’s eye remained focused on the leaves. “I need more breathers and meetings seem to drag on much longer than they used to. I feel so tired once I get back home, I just want to sleep and not move for a week.”
Roman hummed. He understood the feeling well. He had loved acting, still did, but a few years ago he had to admit that he couldn’t do the long rehearsals anymore. A full production was too much for his aging bones, so he switched to administrative work within the theatre and only returned to the stage for small parts.
“We’re not getting any younger, I’m afraid, my precious snake.”
“I’m aware. I guess I just forgot, for a while.”
Roman snorted.
“Forgot you were over sixty now?”
Janus lightly hit him in the arm.
“Shut up.”
He blushed and Roman laughed lightly before putting his now empty cup on the floor and pulling his husband in his arms. Janus grumbled but let him without complaint. Again, they sat in silence for a bit.
“I was never scared of getting old,” Janus admitted quietly. “It’s just another part of life. After we got married, I even looked forward to it. Travelling with you, without needing to constantly check when each of us would be free. And I still want to do that and it still sounds amazing but…” He fell quiet and Roman hugged him just a little tighter.
“But what, honey?”
“It just seems so early. Like that last thirty years passed in a flash and before I know it we’ll be eighty and too old and brittle to do much of anything.”
“I don’t think that’s true,” Roman mumbled, pressing a kiss to Janus’ cheek as he leaned more into him. “I think we’re both aging very gracefully.” Janus snorted but Roman continued, unperturbed. “If we take care of ourselves, we can be just as mobile in our eighties as we are now. And even if we’re not, and all we do is sit here like this, I won’t really complain. I think once we’re both done with working, once all of the stress of productions and cases and whatnot, is out of our lives, things will feel much slower. And I plan to enjoy every single second I get of that with you.”
“You’re probably right,” Janus agreed, leaning his head back on Roman’s chest so he could look him in the eyes. “Spending my retirement with you is definitely not going to be boring.”
“Oh, I plan to sweep you off your feet as long as I can,” Roman promised, causing Janus to laugh.
“That I believe.” They stared at each other for a few seconds before Janus tagged on: “I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Summary: Roman is sick of soup. Too bad that's all he can eat for now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“This sucks!” Roman whined, carelessly letting his spoon clank against the bowl. “I wanna eat something else!”
“Too bad, this is what you’ll need to stick with for now. Chewing will still hurt.”
“I don’t care, I’m sick of chicken noodle soup.”
“I know, darling.”
“I want garlic bread.”
“I know.”
“Then make me some!”
“You can’t eat it, Roman.”
“I can if you puree it.”
“I won’t do that to the poor garlic bread. And I don’t think it’ll taste the same.”
“Urgh!” Roman groaned and dramatically threw himself back in his chair. “You’re supposed to care for me in my time of need!”
“And I am, Roman. But you just had your wisdom teeth removed and until you’ve healed properly, there is nothing I can do. Soup is all I can offer you.”
With a sigh, Roman picked up his spoon again.
“Fine. But I want a massage later.”
“Sure thing, darling. Whatever gives you comfort in your trying times.”
“Thank you.” He paused. “And I’m sorry I’m so whiny. I just hate this.”
Janus, who had finished his own portion of soup, rounded the table, and hugged Roman from behind, carefully avoiding his swollen cheeks.
“It’s alright, my prince. I remember how it was when I got mine removed. A little whining I can deal with, but if you really test my patience, I will tell you to stop.”
“I know. I count on it.”
“Good. Now finish your soup.”
Roman groaned theatrically and they both smiled.
