The association between “Big Brother” and a surveillance state is so strong that people reading 1984 for the first time no longer get to appreciate the intended friendly nature of the phrase. Maybe because it’s too masculine it already seems less trustworthy and more authoritarian, but the fact that Alexa is a “woman” really seems to catch people off-guard. The scowling face of Big Brother propaganda posters contributed to the intended mood of the story, but how would the story have been different if “Big Brother” looked like one of those stock photos of a white woman laughing at her salad? How would our culture be different if it was better understood that fascism spreads by promising safety and security, by looking like an old friend, by being marketable?

Maybe if Fahrenheit 451 had used robo-dogs that looked like those early 2000’s dancing chibi robotoys we’d have fewer people convinced that the Boston Dynamics police dogs (which also “dance”) are “cute”.

i hate how they market alexa as a ‘member of the family’ like that’s SO fucking blatantly insidious and terrifying also if i wanted an untrustworthy/cold/emotionless machine in my life i’d just talk to my fuckin father
