Can't Help Myself Robot
L’oeuvre Can’t Help Myself est une oeuvre réalisée par les artiste chinois Sun Yuan et Pen Yu. Il s’agit d’un bras robotisé enfermé dans une cloison acrylique en forme de cage et entouré d’une flaque de liquide ressemblant à du sang qui ne cesse de s’étendre. Équipé d’une raclette, sa seule tâche est de balayer ce liquide sans relâche tentant sans cesse de la retenir.
Sa particularité est qu’il aurait davantage sa place dans une usine que dans une galerie d’art. En effet, les deux artistes ont fait appel a deux experts en robotique. Ce dernier est un bras robotique KUKA, qui est un robot industriel utilisé dans la construction automobile.
Les deux artistes lui ont donné une personnalité à laquelle les spectateurs peuvent s'identifier. Ils ont créé plus de 32 animations personnalisées pour déterminer comment le robot industriel agirait et réagirait à ses visiteurs.
Les grandes parois en acrylique qui entourent la machine constituent une dernière caractéristique de l'œuvre. S'il s'agit peut-être simplement d'une mesure visant à empêcher les visiteurs d'intervenir ou à empêcher le liquide rouge de s'échapper, elles peuvent également renforcer le sens général de l'œuvre, en donnant l'impression que le robot est pris au piège.
Je trouve que la particularité de cette oeuvre est qu'elle conduit les spectateurs à y lire une série d’interprétations car elle est riche en symbolisme. Ce qui rend la chose encore plus émotive, c'est que le robot est piégé dans un cycle sans fin. Il n'y a aucun moyen de l'aider à se libérer de son fardeau, et il ne peut pas non plus s'aider lui-même, comme l'indique déjà le titre de l'œuvre. Et au fur et à mesure, il se détruit lui-même de la même manière que le stress, les traumatismes et l'anxiété peuvent aussi détruire une personne à la longue.

FAUT-IL ÉDUQUER NOS ROBOTS ?
C’est en tout cas la question que l’on serait en droit de se poser en découvrant l’installation de l’artiste franco-portugais Filipe Vilas-Boas nommée « The Punishment » (La Punition), actuellement exposée au Biennale Siana à l’Agora d’Évry et qu’il nous décrit ainsi :
« The Punishment est une installation dans laquelle un robot exécute une punition préventive au titre de son éventuelle désobéissance future. Une référence aux lois de la robotique d'Isaac Asimov. » dixit Filipe Vilas-Boas
D’habitude plus coutumier aux œuvres visuelles et interactives, F. Vilas-Boas nous livre ici un travail pour le moins minimaliste, nous présentant un robot chargé d’écrire « I must not hurt humans » (« Je ne dois pas blesser les humains »). Le robot (de la marque allemande KUKA Robotics) se trouve installé à un bureau d’écolier et copie inexorable sa punition sur un bloc-notes.
En voyant ceci la question « Qu’a donc fait ce robot pour être puni ? » vient d’elle-même et c’est précisément là que F. Vilas-Boas nous questionne.
« l’œuvre nous interroge […] sur les relations homme-machine au moment même où les technologies se combinent, notamment robotique et intelligence artificielle. » dixit Filipe Vilas-Boas
À l’heure où la possibilité de côtoyer des humanoïdes n’a jamais été aussi proche et redoutant les T-800, HAL 9000 et autres tueurs électroniques, il n’est pas illégitime de s’inquiéter de l’usage qui pourrait être fait de technologies pareilles. Déjà en expérimentation dans plusieurs pays, les « Système d'armes létales autonome » on de quoi faire trembler pour les conflits futurs, espérant seulement que ces engins soient à jour concernant les lois de la guerre … ou bien même que leur usage ne soit détourné pour commettre des tueries de masses.
Il ne faut pas l’oublier, les robots tueurs n’existeront que si on les programme pour. Restons donc vigilant de ne pas précipiter le Jugement Dernier en croyant atteindre notre apogée.

Les deux géants de la planète sont au coude-à-coude. Quatre fois plus peuplée, la Chine a désormais une puissance économique voisine de celle de l'Amérique. Depuis cinq ans , le pouvoir d'achat de l'empire du Milieu dépasse celui des Etats-Unis (PIB converti en taux de change « PPA », égalisant le pouvoir d'achat des monnaies).
Effroyables conflits
Ce genre de rivalité est par nature instable. Dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, l'opposition entre Russie et Etats-Unis s'est traduite par la guerre froide, juste après deux effroyables conflits. Les siècles précédents ont été marqués par d'autres guerres entre empires. A quoi ressemblera l'affrontement entre les Etats-Unis et la Chine ?
Commençons par la bonne nouvelle : la guerre ne devrait pas être militaire. Après avoir échoué au Vietnam et au Proche-Orient, Washington ne veut plus imposer de force sa conception de la démocratie au reste de la planète. Même si son budget militaire est trois fois plus élevé que celui de la Chine .
De son côté, Pékin n'a jamais voulu conquérir le monde par les armes. Ses offensives se cantonnent à son voisinage (mainmise sur le Tibet il y a soixante ans, dernière tentative d'incursion au Vietnam il y a quarante ans, récupération de Hong Kong il y a un peu plus de vingt ans). Son projet de nouvelle route de la soie est d'abord d'essence commerciale. Seule la question lancinante de Taïwan semble être en mesure d'engendrer un périlleux dérapage.
L'industrialisation de l'Occident
Où aura alors lieu la bataille entre les deux grandes puissances de la première moitié du XXIe siècle ? Là où la Chine l'a décidé : dans la technologie. Et cette décision vient de l'analyse de ce qui s'est passé depuis des siècles. Le vice-président chinois, Wang Qishan, l'a expliqué lors du Forum de Davos en début d'année : « La civilisation chinoise a plus de 5.000 ans. Mais quand l'Occident s'est lancé dans l'industrialisation et a embrassé les océans, la Chine est restée derrière car ses empereurs ont décidé de fermer les portes, et elle est ensuite devenue la victime d'agressions étrangères. » Le président, Xi Jinping, a résumé la suite lors de son récent voyage en Europe : « Nous avons fait en quarante ans ce que vous avez fait en trois siècles. »
Aux yeux des dirigeants chinois, c'est la technologie qui est au coeur de l'apogée, du déclin et de la renaissance chinoise. Au Moyen Age, l'empire du Milieu était à la pointe du progrès, avec toutes les grandes avancées technologiques de l'époque - boussole, poudre, papier. Marco Polo en revint tout ébloui. Mais le charbon, la machine à vapeur, les usines et l'électricité ont rebattu les cartes. Et c'est le basculement technologique qui a entraîné le déclin de la puissance économique chinoise, puis la défaite militaire au milieu du XIXe siècle. Cent ans plus tard, l'empire n'était plus qu'un nain.
L'origine du classement de Shanghai
Lors de la guerre froide entre l'URSS et les Etats-Unis, la technologie joua aussi un rôle central. Moscou réussit un coup d'éclat en expédiant le premier homme dans l'espace et Washington réagit à une vitesse foudroyante en envoyant les premiers hommes sur la Lune huit ans plus tard. Cette bataille était cependant symbolique, même si les dépenses engendrées ont permis à l'Amérique d'asseoir sa supériorité industrielle (informatique, aéronautique).
Cette fois, la technologie sera le coeur du conflit. La Chine s'y prépare depuis longtemps, sur tous les registres. Education d'abord, avec la formation de millions d'ingénieurs et la sélection des meilleures universités chinoises ou étrangères, à l'origine du fameux classement de Shanghai il y a plus de quinze ans. Entreprises ensuite, avec un mélange de soutien et de liberté pour favoriser la naissance de futurs géants, en particulier dans le numérique - les fameux Gafa américains ont aujourd'hui chacun leur équivalent chinois, les BATX, pour Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent et Xiaomi. Finance également, avec l'épanouissement du capital-risque dans un secteur pourtant très réglementé.
OPA sur les panneaux solaires
Le plan stratégique Made in China 2025, lancé en 2015, encadre et prolonge cette ambition. Il a aussi fait prendre conscience aux Américains de l'enjeu. D'où l'ampleur prise par l'affaire Huawei , le fabricant chinois de matériels de télécommunications soupçonné d'espionnage alors qu'il est l'un des principaux acteurs de la 5G, la prochaine génération de téléphone mobile.
La mobilisation chinoise devient de plus en plus visible. Le capital-risque chinois va bientôt brasser davantage d'argent que l'américain . On dépose deux fois plus de brevets en Chine qu'aux Etats-Unis. Deux bébés génétiquement modifiés y seraient nés fin 2018. Dans l'intelligence artificielle, les meilleurs articles académiques chinois sont en passe d'être davantage cités que les américains. L'industrie a réussi son OPA sur la production de terres rares et de panneaux solaires. Elle a racheté le champion allemand de la robotique Kuka . Elle s'attaque à l 'automobile via la propulsion électrique et la batterie. Et ce n'est qu'un début.
La bataille sera longue, passionnante, épique. Elle opposera non seulement deux industries, mais aussi deux cultures, deux systèmes politiques, deux philosophies du monde. Aux dernières nouvelles, l'Europe n'en sera qu'une spectatrice.

AUTOMATICA - Robots Vs. Music

Automatica est sûrement un des projets qui m’a le plus intéressé. Jusqu’ici les robots étaient capables de faire de nombreuses choses, mais certains domaines semblent être assez loin de leur capacité. Je pense notamment aux disciplines artistiques. Pourtant, le musicien Nigel Stanford, entouré de plusieurs bras robotisés de la société KUKA Robotics, une société spécialisée dans la fabrication de systèmes robotisés industriels, est parvenu à faire jouer ces machines de toutes sortes d’instruments pour un résultat absolument incroyable.
Il aura fallu plusieurs mois à Nigel Stanford, dans son garage, pour programmer et apprendre à ses Robot à jouer tous les instruments comme le piano, la basse, les platines et la batterie. On peut voir quelques essaies dans cette vidéo :

Je trouve que ce projet, montre que les robots sont dotés de plus en plus de capacités et de précisions que personne ne peut avoir. Cependant, je pense aussi que sans la sensibilité de l’homme (de Nigel Stanford dans ce cas-là) ce genre de projet ne serait pas possible. Et pour terminer, quelques mots de l’artiste : « je voulais explorer les concepts de la robotique, la singularité, l’intelligence artificielle, etc. Je pensais simplement que ce serait cool de voir un robot exploser un piano. »
