SIDE ORDER RELEASE DATE, AAAAAAH. Good motivation to resume the publications, and it was time to show Pearl's amiibo project with her Octo Expansion clothes.

Matching Marina's amiibo, of course (because they're girlfriends-). I have yet to paint both, but I hope to show you the result soon <3

It's funny because I haven't finished showing you the figures of this batch (there are four) and since Side Order arrives in a month, I'll have to start working on Robopearl, on Off the Hook from Splatoon 3... Work piles up.

@hoolyelina has such an iconic and instantly recognizable style. His recent robopearl art is outstanding and I don't believe him when he says he isn't good at hats. Thick lineart is difficult to pull off well (I've been trying to get the hang of it for years) and man she nails it every time. The vibes are cozy but clean as well. She's inspired me to start drawing again after a few years of artist block. Hope he's doing well!

My OCs as The Crystal Gems

LOOK AT THIS SHIT. Pearl made a trashtalking hologram version of herself to fistfight. And now she’s acting out a whole script like some fucking anime protagonist. And Amethyst is so exhausted so Pearl must do this ALL THE TIME.

This is so... entirely the opposite of Amethyst. Amethyst becomes someone else, puts on a mask and takes herself to a place where she can be free of backstories and fight people who don’t care about who she is. Pearl FIGHTS HERSELF (she’s even replaced her little star with a tiny diamond, like when your alternate universe double looks exactly like you but with a goatee (someone give roboPearl a goatee)), and she’s imbued this whole made up dynamic with TOP DRAMA. RoboPearl is base and brutal, seeking out a clash of egos, but Pearl is Pure Of Spirit and her only love is the love of the perfect dance of blades.

So I'm sure you've gotten this question already, but I can't help my curiosity: what do you think of Legs From Here to Homeword, specifically about Blue Diamond being called as a shatterer? In similar fashion, what do you think about White Pearl (t. Robopearl, just sayin'), Yellow Diamond, and White Diamond-- they were hardly portrayed in a forgiving light. Does it at all fill you with confidence that the crewniverse, by some miracle, won't fuck this up?

[clicks tongue] Okay. A biiiig question, huh?

Okay. So, to start off, we’d like to be clear on why we got nervous about the possible plans for Diamond-demption after Reunited. 

The Diamonds have done really, really bad stuff. We didn’t (and don’t) want those things to be excused just because they happen to be Steven’s relatives. We don’t think that’s a good lesson, and we don’t think that’ll help prepare kids for what happens when they inevitably meet bigots in their own lives. Bigots who won’t change their view points so easily.

On a secondary note, we also don’t think that’d be very interesting or fulfilling for Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond as characters. Just wiping all that conflict away to make the Diamonds the New Big Aunts? Nooooo thanks. 

All that said, we’re feeling better after Legs from Here To Homeworld. For a few reasons:

We didn’t have the Diamonds chilling around on Earth, having a BBQ, etc. They get given the cliff notes lesson on what happened to Rose/Pink... and they don’t really seem to buy it. At least, the part about Steven being his own person.

They also definitely seem to get that the rebellion was legitimate, or the importance of all that ‘equality’ and ‘protect the Earth’ stuff.

Seriously. Yellow treats all of Steven’s family with nothing but contempt

Yes, the Diamonds hadn’t meant to Corrupt all the Gems on Earth. No, they’d just meant to obliterate them totally. That’s definitely better from a moral standpoint

Yellow, and even Blue, don’t seem to show much (if any) remorse for hurting the corrupted Gems

Steven actually calls the Diamonds out for this, which was nice. 

Honestly, they’re still just being selfish dicks. All Blue can think about is how happy she is that she gets to hang out with Pink again. She’s not bothering to ask how “Pink” feels about all this. And Yellow? She’s exasperated and embarrassed and afraid of how White’s gonna react to all of that.

So yeah. No insta-redemption for the Diamonds, which is great.

The other piece to this puzzle is Bismuth. Simply put, her attitude was excellent, and she voiced a lot of the things we were thinking:

I know what you're doing, I get why you gotta do it, but I'm not gonna lay my gem on their anvil… Let me put this in Earth terms for you. You're about to enter the “lions' den". Luckily, you're a "lion" too! You better roar at them in their language; you're the one that has to do it.

This line shows a lot of awareness on the writers’ part. It recognises just how dangerous the Diamonds are to any non-Diamond. It also suggests that Steven’s not going to get through to them the same way he’s made peace before. He can’t just share snacks and sing songs; he’s gonna stand up and SHOUT for what he believes.

White Diamond is amazing. Plain and simple. She’s sinister and scary and so far, everything we’d want from her?

And oh. White Pearl. (Or, as we’re calling her, ‘Whoop’). We want to hold her and hug her gently and make her better. We don’t know what’s been done to her-- we’ve seen the theories, and all of them are terrible. Whoop is a pinnacle of how the Diamonds can take all autonomy from a Gem. Literally.

But as much as we love White Diamond, she still introduced some narrative concern to us, indirectly. It seems likely that she’s going to post as the ‘main villain’ in the plot, in which case, it’s likely that Steven’s going to be trying to convince Yellow and Blue to stand up against her.

Which, yeah. Could have all the issues we mentioned earlier. Just because there’s a greater evil out there, doesn’t absolve Yellow and Blue of their own crimes.

That said? If done right, this is a set up for an amazing plot. Steven’s being forced to take on a huge amount of responsibility. He’s going to come face-to-face with the real systematic oppression his family fought against, and understand it like never before. He’s going to have to learn how to stand up for his identity and his beliefs in a whole new way.

So, in conclusion? We have our concerns... but we’re also optimistic. This could be really, really great.
