one of my headcanons for them is that theyre made up of both the souls of the victims the hotel has claimed, and the former staff killed in the hotel. they usually have a lantern with a blue flame within it.
also, their "eyes" are actually mouths, the teeth arent visible at first
i love how Guiding Light from Doors is like “whoopie! you died! here’s why, be sure to do [ ] in order for that to not happen again. now get back out there, sweetheart!” and Sebastian from Pressure is like “BROOOO i cant believe you died to that stupid fucking bitch. here’s your fucking file or whatever, gods damned loser.”
i love how we can see our relationship develop with guiding light in doors, now that we have floor two, along with more context clues about it.
in floor one, it’s only its name—guiding light. it shows us a way to move forward, even if it’s a bit delayed or almost hesitant. its dialogue after we die is impassive, giving neutral tips that anyone could observe. but now? now it “ cradles “ us in an embrace of the sea, it warns us of danger through its door markers. it even SAVES us in seek’s new chase.
it’s gone from a passive observer to present, always with us, not just the guiding light, but our guiding light. in its new cutscene, it congratulates us, welcomes us. it encourages us, and tells us directly not to give up. it’s attached. it wants us to see to end of our journey here.
while this is sweet, i can’t help but observe exactly what i said before—after we die, we’re gazing upon the moon, just as it’s that same moon in between lethal rooms guarding us, and in an ocean presumably. not only does this further cement it is guiding light who is chaining the monsters with the crucifix, but it’s also a bit strange, right? where else is there any water in the game, besides the rain?
outside the hotel, of course. below it, encompassing it. the only other place we can go. outside, down those stairs, into an endless sea. i believe it is guiding light who is in it, rather a guardian or a keeper of the hotel, or perhaps is the ocean itself. whatever it may be, it’s obvious it wants to protect us, and wants us to reach the end of this exploration through the hotel at any cost.
