Secret of Moonacre
Loveday and Uncle Ben’s Wedding
It was just like any normal day. No that’s a lie. Today was my uncle Benjamin and Loveday’s wedding. Uncle had allowed me and Loveday to plan all the decorations, and so after weeks of toile, it was finally perfect.
Loveday was getting her dress on with the help of Miss Heliotrope. Loveday and I had man the dress from fine white silk that we were given by the De Noir. It was stunning and absolutely breathtaking. I was ascending the staircase when I ran into my uncle and Robin. My uncle had chosen him to be his best man, while Loveday chose me to be her maid of honor.
“Good morning, Uncle.” I nod to him. “Robin.” I blush when our eyes meet.
“Good morning, Meria. How is everything this morning.” I knew that he was asking about how Loveday was doing.
“Everything is going as planned, and Loveday is preparing now.” I comfort my uncle. “I have one more detail I must attend to and then I, myself, will be getting ready.”
“Anything you might need help with?” Robin said, making me turn to him with a small smile.
“I could use you, if you are not ready.” I lie. I don’t really need his help, but I wouldn’t mind the company myself.
“Then you two get going. Meria, please hurry to get ready.” My uncle nodded and then left.
“Follow me.” I instruct Robin. He does as he is told and walks beside me down the hall. I steal glances from him every once and a while and when we make eye contact I look away with a blush. When we finally reach outside in the flower garden, I stop to pick up a few of the leaves that have fallen from the trees above.
“What did you need my help with?” Robin asks, leaning against a huge potted plant.
“Well I have to set the last few tables, and it would go quicker with two people.” I walk over to a table and start to unfold one of the table cloths. Robin comes over and takes a side of the table cloth and we place it on the table. I make sure it is flattened out then I inspect the work.
“It’s just a table.” Robin comes up behind me and whispers in my ear. “Why are you starting as if it was a jewel?”
“I want to make sure everything is perfect.” I turn to face Robin. Our lips are so close to each other that I can’t help but look at his lips so close to mine.
“Sure.” He said, moving closer to me. I can feel his breath on my face.
“Excuse me, Meria, you are needed by Miss Loveday.” Digweed comes out, interrupting the moment. I jump back and try to hide how red my face is.
“Yes.” I say in a meek voice, turning to the other table I have left to do. I quickly undo the table cloth and lay it down.
“What’s the rush?” Robin stands opposite of me, with a table between us.
“I have to help Loveday and finish the table.” I smooth out the bumps in the table.
“Let me take care of this table, and you go and see what my sister would want?” He comes closer to me with an evil smirk. It almost melts my heart. “I promise to make it look your level of perfection.” He places a hand on his heart as if a promise.
I smile and agree. “Fine.” I start to walk away, but then I turn back to him. “Thank you.”
“Just remember to save a dance for me.” He gives me a genuine smile that completely undos me. I turn back with a smile and walk up to find Loveday.
*****
“Loveday, is everything alright?” I ask through the doors. She is getting ready in my bedroom because there is no way for her to see Benjamin when she is up there. They decided to have her dress be a surprise to him.
“Meria, thank goodness!” She opened the door and pulled me into the room. “You need to help me, my dress has a rip in the back!”
I walk over to inspect her dress and sure enough there is about a 13 inch rip along the side of her leg. I come over and see that there is nothing terribly wrong, and I start to hold it together to come up with ideas. I instruct Loveday to pass me the needle and thread and then I start to stitch. My mother believed that I always needed to learn how to stitch, so I guess all that practice came in handy. It was about 10 minutes before everything was all said and done, but when I stepped back to inspect my work, it was perfect.
“How does that look?” I asked Loveday.
“You are an angel, this looks perfect!” Loveday hugged me.
I hugged her back and then realised I was not yet ready for the wedding. I rushed over to my outfit and started getting ready. Loveday helped to tie up my corset and then after a few minutes of wrestling with the dress some, it was finally on.
“Loveday, will you help me with my makeup?” Of course Loveday is excited to help me, and she grabs a chair and sits across from me. She begins working on my eyes. She always tells me that I have the brightest eyes, and that all I need is something to draw attention to them.
When Loveday is all said and done, she hands me a mirror and the moment I look at myself I am speechless. I have never felt so beautiful in my entire life than I do right now.
“Oh, Loveday!” I hug her. “Thank you.”
“Oh you have done most of the work, I was just simply showing off your qualities.” She hugged me back. “I hate to interrupt this moment, but the wedding is today.”
We stand up and do a once over each other to make sure everything is perfect. I hand her her flowers, and then I take her hand in mine and we walk down to the common room together.
Miss Heliotrope comes down and tells us how beautiful we all look. Then she tells us that all the guests have been seated and the groom is waiting.
“Are you ready?” I look to Loveday.
“I am finally ready.” She smiles at me, then blushes.
I take her hand in mine and give it a squeeze. Her father comes forward and takes Loveday’s hand out of my own. I nod to him and then stand in the front. I look back at Loveday to see her eyes sparkle with joy. She was in love with Uncle Benjamin, and I just knew they were going to make each other happy.
I turn back and nod to Digweed to open the doors. The doors slowly swing open and you can hear the stone moving against the ground. The music starts to play and I begin my walk down the aisle. I look at my uncle and see his shining face. His eyes meet mine and he nods, then he turns to look at his bride behind me.
I could wish them nothing more than happiness for all their days. Once their pride was out of the way, they were truly able to love each other with no obstacles. They were going to love each other for the rest of their lives and it was just heartwarming to think about.
Then my eyes caught Robin’s. I smiled at him and he looked me up and down with a sly smile. I blush and look away for a second, but when I look back his eyes are on me. When I reach him, he leans over and whispers “You look wonderful.” That only makes me blush more.
I go and stand on the opposite side and watch as Loveday’s father gives her away. Coeur De Noir whispers something in Loveday’s ear and then she kisses his cheek.
*****
“Do you take Loveday De Noir to be your wife until death do you part?” The preacher asked.
“I do.” Benjamin answered.
“And do you take Benjamin Merryweather to be your husband until death do you part?” The preacher looked at Loveday.
“I do.”
“I now pronounce you Husband and Wife. You may kiss one another.” The preacher stood back.
A tear ran down my cheek as I clapped for the newly weds. I would now have an Aunt Loveday. I felt someone move beside me when I went to wipe a tear. “Are you alright?”
I look up to see Robin standing beside me. I laugh and turn to him. “I am fine.”
“You're crying.” He points to my face.
“I wiped the last tear. “I am happy. These are happy tears.”
“Are you sure.” He leaned into me.
“I am sure.” I push him back playfully.
He offers me his arm and I take it. We walk over to the tables where all the guests are getting seated. The music starts to play as we reach our seats. Robin pulls out a chair for me, and when he is seated beside me, Loveday and Uncle start to dance.
I watch as they walts around the dance floor. When I feel a hand on mine, I look to Robin. He is smiling at me and I can’t help but smile back at him. When the dance is over I finally look away to clap, but I can feel Robin’s eyes still on me.
After a few toasts and the meal being served, it is finally time to eat. I hadn’t noticed how hungry I was until I smelled the delicious food. When my plate was set before me, I couldn't help but smile at it.
“Find something good on your plate?” Uncle Benjamin laughed.
“I guess I forgot to eat this morning.” I smiled back.
Loveday smiled at me, and I smiled back at her. This morning we were going to cook ourselves food, but after a small fire and getting kicked out of the kitchen, we never got breakfast.
“Well, eat.” Robin pushed my plate towards me.
I laugh and then stick my tongue out of my mouth.
“Hey you two, behave.” Loveday jokes at us.
*****
“Will you dance?” I heard someone ask from behind me.
“Sorry, this one is busy. Move along.” Robin stepped between me and this new man.
“Sorry.” He mumbled and walked away.
“Why did you do that. That poor man.” I stepped in front of Robin so he would look at me.
“I don’t want anyone else to dance with you.” He grabbed my arm and pulled me onto the dance floor. “Only me.”
I laugh but let him take the lead. I have danced before, but I really just follow. We dance slow and it feels like it is just the two of us in this whole world. I can feel his heartbeat as I rest my head on his chest. At first he is tense, but then he relaxes.
“You are a wonderful dancer.” He whispers to me in a golden tone.
“I am just following your lead.” I look up at him.
He smiles at me, then I rest my head back on his chest. He is warm and comforting. I love the feeling he gives me. I feel safe and invisible, yet warm.
We dance another 3 or more songs. I lost track of time, but soon even my feet were starting to hurt. We took a break and Robin offered to get us something to drink.
“So, you and my little brother?” Loveday sat beside me.
“Oh!” I jumped back, not knowing she was there. “You scared me.”
“I am sorry, but I just had to know… are you in love… with a certain De Noir?” She nudged my arm.
“I… I might be falling for him.” I admit to her. It felt so nice to finally say something to someone.
She clapped her hands together. “I am so glad. From the moment I saw you two together, I knew there was going to be a story.” She hugged me.
“What do you mean?” I said, being smushed.
“When he came to your defence, knowing you had the moonstones in your hand, well I knew that it was love. He defended you and didn’t take what all his life he was taught was his.” She let go of me to look me in the eye. “You two are meant to be.”
She stated it as if it was written in the stars or something. I blush at thinking about Robin and I working together to get the moonstones. We didn’t start out as the best of friends, but now I trust him with my life.
“Sister, congratulations.” Robin walked over and handed me a glass. I nodded a thanks to him. “How are you enjoying your wedding party?”
“I am very much happy. I am so glad to see you and father travel so far for this.” She stood and hugged him. “I really have missed you.”
“I have missed you too.” Robin hugged her back.
When their hug ended Robin made his way to standing behind my chair with one hand on my shoulder. Loveday sat down and looked at his hand.
“I am so happy that everyone is having a nice time. Didn’t I see you two dancing awhile ago?” She gave me a mischievous smile.
“We were.” Robin answered, clueless to his sister’s look.
“How are we?” Uncle Benjamin came over. He kissed his new bride on the cheek and then smiled at me and Robin.
“Are you enjoying everything, Uncle?” I asked, ready to stand up.
“I am. I just happened to notice that all my favorite people are in one area.” He came over and kissed my forehead. “How are you, Meria?”
“I am quite well, uncle.” I smiled at him. “I was just taking a rest after dancing for so long.”
“And you, Robin. How is everything?” Uncle turned to Robin.
“It is quite a wonderful party.” Robin said, as polite as he could muster. I knew that this wasn’t Robin’s scene, but it meant so much to share this day with him.
“I am glad.” Uncle turned to his new wife. “Dear, I think it might be time to say goodbye to our guests.”
“Of course.” Loveday stood up and waved at us. “I want to hear more later.” She said when she hugged me.
After Uncle and her left, Robin turned to me. “What was all that about?”
“Nothing. How about we dance one more song before the party ends?” I grab his hand. He lets me take it and I lead him to the dance floor.
A slow song starts and the lights dim so they are just on the dance floor. I lean my head on Robin again, and he holds me to him. Though it is a slow song, it feels as if no time is passing at all.
Robin puts one hand on my back, and soon the other one. We are basically in one hug now, swaying on the dance floor. I felt happy and safe, and I never wanted this song to end.
“What a beautiful night.” Robin says in my ear.
“Yes.” I look into his eyes. “It is.”
He leans in and plants his lips on my own. The world dissolves around me, and sparks fill my vision. A smile started taking over my lips, and soon Robin pulled away with a smile of his own.
“I must say goodnight, Meria.” Robin looked towards the doors. “But I will be back… That is a promise.”
He kissed my hand, making me blush, and then he left. I waved at him when he turned to look at me, and he smiled in return.
