One of the pleasures of being the kind of annoying theatergoer who gets all the jokes in Renaissance drama is getting to hear which ones are still shocking to a modern audience, which ones get the "did they just SAY that?" reaction. This one definitely got that reaction.
(I think it is probably more shocking to a modern audience than it would have been in Marlowe's time, although it's probably worth pointing out it doesn't appear in the B-text. But censorship in early modern England focused on religion and politics rather than sex jokes so idk what the deal is with that)
#doctor faustus#hot faust summer#the production i just saw cut the line after 'clefts' but it's really just the same joke twice#also the guy playing robin (the clown) in this production was terrific#robin and dick (hee hee. dick) were a perfect comedy duo#the one bit that kinda shocked me was during the seven deadly sins scene#where lechery takes the form of wagner and grinds on faustus for a bit#this may just have been a case of the actor doubling#but i like to think that the demons are conveying the message to faustus#that he could totally fuck the cute twink who literally lives in his house#to his credit faustus was very much not into that#(they put faustus in the audience for this part so he was literally in the next seat from me. right in front of my salad)
