Robin’s lungs are not working.

They’ve been failing her since Emmeryn fell; her chest carved out and scrabbling for air during every step of their harried escape. She thought she’d catch her breath eventually. She thought she’d be able to pull it together for Chrom’s sake.

Then the storm started; the very sky that Emmeryn plummeted through mourning her in torrents, the earth she’d bled upon now sodden with its grief. They’d fled into the Mire, only to have their escape route intercepted by flooding plains and an awaiting battalion. That was hours ago, and still Robin’s lungs shriek, each heartbeat a convulsion inside of her. A handicap when she can least afford it.

She grits her teeth, forcing her legs to lift and fall, lift and fall. Lightning writhes across the sky in thorny brambles.

“We’re—we’re almost there,” she pants. Every breath is a burden, but she gathers it fitfully to push a few more words out. “Just…a little bit…farther.”

Chrom says nothing, his expression an unwavering grimace. Robin staggers beneath his weight as she struggles to keep them both upright. Crimson rivers slough down his arm, mingling with the muck at their feet.

She thanks the gods that he’s still alive to bleed at all—the gash beside her collarbone a throbbing reminder of just how close they’d cut it. Months ago, Robin memorized his motions in battle the same way a noblewoman might memorize dance steps. Every parry, every thrust and flourish, the feints he was most likely to fall for. Chrom has always been prone to charging ahead…to forging his own opening where there is not one.

But never has it been like this—throwing himself at wave after wave of soldiers in a gory barrage with no pause, no thought, no rest.
