Murmuration

Chapters: 5/5
Fandom: Warehouse 13
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Myka Bering/Helena "H. G." Wells
Characters: Myka Bering, Helena "H. G." Wells, Tracy Bering, Christina Wells, Warren Bering, Jeannie Bering, William Wolcott, Pete Lattimer
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Science Fiction
Series: Part 1 of Seven Worlds
Summary:
Myka Bering has spent her entire life falling in love with Helena Wells. It took Helena much less time than that to fall in love with Myka. It's all relative, you see.

It's an incredibly compelling AU that uses the time dilation of space travel to amazing effect. One of my favorite Bering and Wells AUs!

WIP Title list
Rules: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! Tag as many people as you have WIPs.
@roadien60 made me do it, and so I'm doing it instead of writing. ;) Tag yourself!
I'll be honest that some of these are just title placeholders, with no actual writing yet. Whether they go somewhere or get incorporated into something else is an open question.
The Pirate and the Spy (Sanvers - for now)
Eclipse (Sanvers)
Seams (Who Knows)
Crisis on Earth X idea that would fit into Valentine universe (Sanvers)
Murder mystery idea that would fit into Valentine universe (Sanvers)
Unmoored (Sanvers)
Vampire thing (Sanvers)
To Sail the Sea of Night - Children of Talos - Spinner of Tales (original)
Detective name project that I won't reveal here because it's a good name and I don't want AI to steal it (original)
Untitled Notebook Project (original)

Tumblr media
From post-apocalyptic bridges to viral outbreaks and Hollywood gossip columns, this writer has been consistently gifting/traumatizing the Sanvers fandom with magnificent storytelling and gorgeous prose. And angst. Did we say angst? Here to provide some insight into how she stresses us all out, is the inimitable @roadien60 !
Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started writing fic? Have you written for other fandoms? What are your favorite tropes?   I started writing fic for The Matrix circa 2000 or 2001. I had recently seen the movie, was immediately obsessed with it, and somehow discovered fanfic online in my journey of trying to read, think, and learn more about The Matrix. I was deeply involved in Matrix fandom for several years (yes, I had a different handle then, and no, I will not tell you what it was). Once that faded circa 2003/4, I ventured away from fandom for a long, long time—long enough that I didn't expect to ever stumble into it again. And then, on recommendation from a trusted queer friend, I stumbled into Warehouse 13. I think I may have read fic for Bering and Wells before I ever watched an episode. But then I did watch, and I started writing around the same time. That was in 2013, I think. Then that show ended, and I can't remember how I found my way into Sanvers, but here we are.
Tropes: I'm a sucker for a forbidden love story, especially one built on mistaken or hidden identity. A lot of people say that tension built on lies and secrets is lazy storytelling... but I'm of the opinion that it all depends on how well the lie/secrecy is justified by the story and the world the characters are living in. What were your inspirations for this particular story? What was it about this/these ships that grabbed you? Oh, gosh, I don't remember where the train fic idea came from at this point. I wish I did.
In terms of the ships: honestly, I don't really remember that, either! But a thing I've realized is that I am rarely interested in chosen one stories or in central characters with superpowers or other forms of magic (unless they're in a world where a lot of other people have the same powers they do). I am, however, interested in the stories of people who live in worlds with superheroes—the "normal" people who try to make a difference in worlds where there are superhumans who can transform everything at a blink. I loved The Matrix because of Trinity, and I loved Bering and Wells for Myka—the "normal" people in pairings with special/magical partners. In Sanvers, I love that neither of them is special but they have to navigate their proximity to a person with extreme powers. From a character standpoint, that's really compelling to me. Has the time spent away from your story changed your outlook or approach to any of the storylines or themes? Have you had any new inspirations or breakthroughs/revelations in the meantime? Yeah--the main thing I realized recently was that rejuvenating this story for me required me to dig into Maggie's POV in a way I hadn't before in this story. I've been enjoying that. Also I realized I had to actually hash out a timeline, which I hated doing but was necessary for this story to make sense.

Absolutely wrecked by this fic tonight.
Here's an early favorite moment (no spoilers). The incredible tension packed in the stillness of this moment blows my mind:
The face that looked back at her was as clear as a mirror. Clearer, even, because even the most expensive mirror distorted a little, and Maggie knew, somehow, that this was perfect: that she was seeing an impeccable reflection of herself, there, in the water. She didn’t much like looking at herself. She never had. So she adjusted her gaze and looked beyond the reflection, into the deep, and saw that the quiet reached beyond the surface; the water was so still that it had turned clear, and she could see the rocks and the reefs a hundred feet down, lobsters and cod and minnows and kelp all frozen, as though they were waiting for something. And then the stillness shattered.
🤯
I can't leave without mentioning the absolutely amazing art. This first mermaid picture especially hits me with exactly what hits Maggie, "her beauty and the devastating judgment of her rage" ( @roadien60's words again) and I'm quaking in my socks just looking at her. Incredible.
The Girl Who Fell in Love with the Last Mermaid and How She Calmed the Sea
written by @roadien60
Rating: Teen and up audiences
Warnings: None
Summary:
In Maggie’s mind, merfolk had always been stories, but she knew that they were stories that fishermen took seriously. On her first fishing boat, last year, a crewman had come yelling that he’d seen one, and the captain had taken the news to be deadly serious: they had strapped down everything they could and brought all hands on deck that night, bracing for a storm.
Maggie had thought it to be excessive. The weather radar wasn’t showing anything. There were no NOAA warnings. But here was the captain, making them suit up in life jackets with emergency ties, and sure enough, the storm that hit them was the worst that Maggie had ever experienced as a sailor, both in her two years on fishing boats and four years in the Coast Guard.
And now Maggie had seen a mermaid, too.
A contemporary fantasy story in which Alex is a mermaid, Maggie works on a fishing boat, and together they save a little bit of the world.
Additional tags: Alternate Universe - Urban Fantasy, Mermaids, Sirens, James "Jimmy" Olsen & Maggie Sawyer Friendship, Trans Maggie Sawyer
With art by @ancientannoyance
Do not view the art or read the excerpts before you read Roadie's fic, as the art contains spoilers.
These works were part of Sanvers Big Bang 2021 and were revealed on November 13.

A Bering and Wells Round Robin, you say?
Yep, here I am with the next idea! I even made a photo manip:
Tumblr media
(this is a starling to represent Helena Wells - because of @roadien60 s wonderful Murmuration fic, which if you haven't read it yet, stop everything and read it, right now! - and a (very round) pink robin, to represent Myka in her pretty pink shirt in Time Will Tell. Can't you just hear the starling say "darling, I'm too fabulous to read the manual" and the robin say "reading the manual isn't optional, Helena" ? Anyway, this manip is totally @anandabrat s fault! Enabler that she is. :D)
So, back to topic.
A Round Robin is an endeavor in which people collaborate by taking turns. Here, it'd be writing a fic together, one chapter per author, then it gets passed on to the next author who writes the next chapter, and so on - so you're both building on what the authors before you have written, and adding on what you want to bring to the story.
For a topic, I propose a 13 chapter story, for 13 years of Bering and Wells: 1 chapter for a scene or story from each of their 13 years together. Can be as long or as short as you like!
For a time frame, I propose starting the weekend after Valentine's Day, so as not to overlap with the Bering and Wells Holiday Gift Exchange. This would give us a bit more than two months time until April 23rd.
I'm gonna put some more ideas (and a poll!) under the readmore:
Starting after Valentine's Day, say on February 18, would give each writer five days to work on a chapter before passing it on, if we want to publish on Bering and Wells Day (April 23rd). You can also start writing in advance as soon as you know which year you're writing for; just be mindful that you might need to adapt your work to what the authors before you have written.
As for knowing which year you'd be writing for, I had the idea of making a timeline of what happens in canon in year 1 and 2 and so on, and also roughly what happened in real life; things that we can incorporate or not (such as the 2016 US election, or the queen dying). And then when you sign up as writer, you can say "hey, I have this amazing idea for year 4, so I'd really love to write for that", or, "I'll tackle whatever year is left over," or "I want to write how they get together after Giselle*; so roughly year 5 or 6?" - this is a collaboration; we'll figure out who goes where. If we have fewer than 13 authors signing up, we can take several turns, even - though in that case I think it's more fun if no one writes more than one chapter before passing it on. So writer A might write year 4 and 8, but not 4 and 5.
*Some questions we're gonna have to agree upon in advance, such as, how much of canon do we stick with (Boone? Giselle?), where do we see their relationship going (marriage or living together without paperwork, or the question of kids for example), and are we gonna include the pandemic or not. We could even make a poll out of this - use Tumblr's shiny new feature!
There will be no minimum word count for this; just write the scene you feel fits in that specific year. Can be a drabble, can be 5000 words, whatever you feel like! Just don't keep the authors behind you in line waiting; make sure you can get it on the page in time.
Those are the ideas I had for this - now I'm asking you:
If you have questions or ideas, put them in the replies or reblogs! Signal boost reblogs are also very welcome!

✨AO3 wrapped 2023✨
Tumblr media
got tagged by @lilolilyr - thanks, Lil! <3
Works published: 18! This might be my record, honestly. Hang on - nope; in my very first year on AO3, 2012, I published 24. Still, second most proliferous year is pretty dang good too!
Wordcount: 142,803 - wow! Nice!
Kudos: 482
Hits: 5,804
Bookmarks: 53
Subscriptions: 49
Most popular by kudos: Bering and Wells for Year of the OTP 2023, with 50 kudos - that is a surprise, honestly! And I like it!! That one was a challenge I set for myself, and it's lovely to see that people liked the results!
Gonna put the rest under a readmore:
Most hits: "Not This": What To Expect When Faced With H.G. Wells - A Field Guide by Myka Bering with 1,117 hits - the surprising thing here isn't that this is as high as it is, it is that out of my Top 5 by hits, 3 are smut with a much lower hits-to-kudos rate 😅
Longest: also "Not This" with 58,063 words. Runner-up: The Pearl Diver with 19,958 words
Shortest: The Two New Lance-Constables, a drabble/100 words
Most Comments: It's "Bering and Wells for Year of the OTP 2023" again, with 22 comment threads. Runner-up: Surprise Tomatoes with 15!
Fics that made me cry: Gonna go with "Not This" again, because it's certainly the angstiest, and also in general the emotionally deepest, I think.
Fics that made me smile: Come To Bed, for reasons I describe in this summary: "In our zoom meet-up last weekend, Ida (vestwearer) continuously reminded me to take breaks, lest I overextend myself and end up with a migraine. This fic is a thank-you for her, because I very much needed her reminders." I also challenged myself "to make Helena's "come to bed" the concerned one and Myka's the… other one." Both of these things make me smile, and the actual fic itself isn't half bad either for sweet feelings. :)
gifts: 12!! Wow! A lot of them from @lilolilyr - thank you so much :D And a veritable birthday gift in form of a podfic I'm super stoked about: [Podfic] I have wanted to know you, lover of books by @tryingthisfangirlthing thank you too!! And the amazing art for my Big Bang fic "Not This": Tea and Toast by @galactic-pirates ! Thank you so much!
collaborations: The much-mentioned Big Bang fic was a collab between @anandabrat as a beta reader, @galactic-pirates as an artist, and myself as a writer.
events: The aforementioned Big Bang at the beginning of the year, which @galactic-pirates and I co-hosted, and then the Bering and Wells Advent Calendar collab this December! with @lavendelhummel @lilolilyr (who organized the whole thing) @akittennameddaisy @viharistenno @jesstrel @sallysetonbw @violetren @thiakerrigan and @tryingthisfangirlthing! Both were a lot of fun, and I definitely wanna do it again some day!
I'm gonna tag everyone who's already been mentioned, and also @madronash and @amtrak12 and @nerdsbianhokie and @smarterinabsentia and @roadien60 and @performativezippers !
For ease of copying: Works published: Wordcount: Kudos: Hits: Bookmarks: Subscriptions: Most popular by kudos: Most hits: Longest: Shortest: Most Comments: Fics that made me cry: Fics that made me smile: gifts: collaborations: events:

Last line tag meme - tagged by @roadien60 thanks!
Rules: in a new post, show the last line you wrote (or the last wip you drew) and tag as many people as there are words (or however many you like).
From a little hurt/comfort idea:
But anything about her own past can be for later.
Not sure if this line will ever see the light of day because I need to rework the 'past' that it's referencing, if the idea does get written out fully. But maybe next year once I finish other things for people.
Tagging @allondonboy @bioswear @bitch-for-a-rainbow @cantdrawshaw @euhemeria @labellewolf13 @nerdsbianhokie @sandstonesunspear @smarterinabsentia @warriorbard2012 if you have a line you want to share! And anyone else who wants to play!

A Bering and Wells Writers Panel?!?
Hey everyone, especially those of you who used to write or are still writing Bering and Wells fic:
Would you be interested in a panel on fic writing during the Zoom meetup on the 23rd? One writer (who also has published novels) has already contacted me saying they're interested; I'd love to open this to more people who might want to weigh in on such topics as:
what's your fic writing process? (and if you're a published author too, does it differ between fic and originals?)
how do you make sure you keep your characters in character?
where do you find your inspiration for fic?
what, to you, is the pull of writing fic (for Bering and Wells/in general)?
what's the fic you're most proud of and why?
I am going to be so bold and tag writers who I know are here on Tumblr, with the question of if you'd be interested in being a panelist; it's definitely going to be in a US-friendly timeslot, probably an hour or 90 minutes long, and moderated with pre-prepared questions as well as a slot for questions from the chat.
@absedarian , @redlance , @racethewind10 , @webgeekist , @winged-mammal , @themysteryvanishing , @anamatics , @mjduncan , @hatikarat , @kloperslegend , @ifourmindbeso , @sistersin7 , @muppetmanda , @magicmumu2 , @mysensitiveside , @a-windsor , @nerdsbianhokie , @apparitionism , @amtrak12 , @applesnatheists , @jdaydreamer3 , @madronash , @anandabrat , @gothprentiss , @julieverne , @birdofdawning , @lilolilyr , @barbarawar, @whiskeyadams , @sallysetonbw , @roadien60
(in no particular order!!)
Obviously, being tagged here isn't an obligation at all; it's absolutely fine if the idea of being a panelist makes you want to run towards the Badlands and hide in a certain corrugated-iron warehouse set into the hillside there. Also, I am 100% sure I have not tagged everyone who falls under "has written for/is writing for Bering and Wells and is on Tumblr". So if this reaches you and you haven't been tagged, and you want to take part in this kind of panel, please still reach out to me @purlturtle - and obviously also if you have been tagged and do want to do it!
