NANGA PARBAT

Nanga Parbat, also called the Killer Mountain, is an 8,125-meter high mountain that figures as the second highest peak in Pakistan (after K2) and the eighth in the world. Its hair-raising name is due to the fact that, throughout the years, Nanga Parbat has taken the lives of many climbers who tried to climb it unsuccessfully. Nanga Parbat is also considered one of the hardest mountains to climb in the world. However, despite having such a terrifying name, the Nanga Parbat Base Camp is surprisingly accessible for even inexperienced trekkers, as it is located only 4 hours away from Fairy Meadows, a campsite which is normally used as a base to organize treks to the base camp. Fairy Meadows is in a green lush plain from where you get striking views of Nanga Parbat, starting from a vast glacier which, gradually, ascends to the foot of that huge ice block. Nevertheless, due to its high accessibility, Fairy Meadows is also the most commercial spot in Pakistan, with prices higher than the Pakistani average, and it is inhabited by a group of locals who prioritize money before hospitality, something unheard of in Pakistan.

But this shouldn’t keep you back, as the Fairy Meadows trek and Nanga Parbat Base Camp are some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen.

FARI MEDOW TREK

Located in Gilgit-Baltistan, north Pakistan, getting to Fairy Meadows doesn’t require any kind of mountain experience as, except for the last 6 or 7km, most of the way can be done by 4×4.

Getting to Raikot Bridge

Everyone who goes to FM will have to pass Raikot Bridge, the place on the Karakoram Highway from where you access the mountains towards FM.

Raikot Bridge is located 80km from Gilgit and 400km from Islamabad. The bus that goes from Islamabad to Gilgit can leave you there, no problem.

In Gilgit, buses to Raikot Bridge leave from the main bus station (Location: 35.898824, 74.369927). Personally, I hitchhiked from Gilgit, as it is significantly faster than going by public transport.

Once you are at the bridge, you’ll have to register with the police, who will also assign you a personal armed guard.

Really, why?

In 2013, a group of terrorists killed 9 foreigners. It was the first and only attack that has ever happened in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Fairy Meadows road

The only legal way to go along Fairy Meadows road is by local Jeep. In summer 2017, they were charging 7,000PKR ($66) for a round trip, a cost that can be divided by up to 5 passengers. The journey takes 2 hours.

What if you are only 2 or 3 people? You can wait for someone to show up but, from what I’ve heard, some travelers have waited for hours, but no one else showed up.

Wait, do you have to buy a round-trip ticket? The locals from FM are the scum of Pakistan, who force you to buy a round trip ticket, so on the way back, you can’t share it with anyone you might meet at the camp.

Can I go walking? No, the police will not allow you for security reasons. However, this law doesn’t make sense, as the road is extremely narrow and it’s built on a cliff 1,000 meters high, which also makes it one of the most dangerous roads I’ve ever been on. Walking would be definitely safer. Welcome to Pakistan

Can I skip the police checkpoint? I managed to skip it, started to walk from there and, after three hours, a Jeep picked me up. I was very lucky. If you also want to skip it, you should come hitchhiking and tell the driver not to stop at the police checkpoint. If you come by bus, the driver will definitely inform the police.

By the way, Fairy Meadows road is one of the most scenic roads in Pakistan.

Trekking to Nanga Parbat base camp

Going to Nanga Parbat Base camp is an 8-hour trek (round-trip).

A few kilometers after Fairy Meadows, there is a second campsite called Behal, where I recommend spending the second night, as it is much quieter and has even better views than the previous camp.

Getting to Nanga Parbat Base Camp

After Behal, the trail gets tougher, although more rewarding. From an alpine forest, the way becomes an arid but impressive landscape, surrounded by snow and ice blocks.

You are at the Nanga Parbat Base Camp, where the silence is only interrupted by the sound of the occasional avalanches, which can be heard from very far away.

I hadn’t planned to visit Shimshal, a beautiful remote valley in Gilgit Baltistan (north Pakistan). It ended up being one of the best experiences of my Pakistan adventure. In fact, I didn’t have an itinerary for my trip to Pakistan. Only an extensive list of places I would have liked to explore. After a few days in Lahore and a short stop in Islamabad, I headed up north, to the mountains, the real focus of my journey. I did not have a precise destination, only knew that I certainly wanted to go as far Hunza and possibly even further towards Khunjerab Pass, marking the border with China. The end of Shimshal Valley On the way up north, I visited Fairy Meadows, a favorite mountain resort for Pakistanis, and for a reason. The view on the Nanga Parbat is gorgeous, the scenery is idyllic, and to get there you must take a jeep trek along one of the most dangerous dirt roads in the world. At Fairy Meadows, I had my first short trek, and I suffered for the first time mountain sickness, but that would not discourage me. I was craving for mountains, and I knew there would be a lot more. It was my friend Mirza Ali Baig, one of the best mountaineers in Pakistan who runs a travel agency organizing incredible expeditions – who a few days later sent me a message asking “why don’t you go to Shimshal for trekking and to discover the local culture?”. I knew that to him it was more than a casual question. Mirza is from Shimshal, and although he now lives in Islamabad, he does anything he can to promote his birthplace – too often overlooked by tourists – and to help locals. At the time, I had just arrived in the beautiful Hunza Valley, with its lush green terraces where locals grow fruits (apricots, cherries, apples and more) and vegetables, and circles by majestic mountains. On the map, Hunza is not far from Shimshal; only about 110 km (68 mi). The idea was surely tempting. The issue was that since there’s no recent travel guide for Pakistan (the latest Lonely Planet dates back to 2008 and is nowhere to be found, except at exorbitant prices that don’t make any sense), I had no idea how to get there, and how long it might take me. Mirza suggested that he could ask his best friend, who lives in Shimshal and works with him as a mountain guide, to come and meet me in Hunza. From there, we could head together to what I already knew would be a beautiful and extraordinary place. Nubra Valley Expedition

Best time to visit Nubra Valley:

Summer is the best season to plan a Ladakh trip. The beautiful Nubra valley can be best explored during the months between May to June and September to November. The weather is pleasantly warm, and you can enjoy the stunning scenic views of this paradise. Climate is always cold here, but summers are bearable with a warm and pleasing temperature. Winters are harsh and cold and visiting Nubra in this chill is highly unadvisable. Temperature dips drastically to as low as -4°C in the evenings, making it extremely cold. 

Being at a higher altitude of approximately 10,000 ft, the temperature ranges between 8°C to 20°C during summers and -10°C to 15°C during winters. The month of July and August experience heavy rainfall in this region. The Khardung La pass is closed due to excessive rains and snowfall. Winter starts from November to February, making Ladakh inaccessible as most of the roads are closed, and there is less connectivity.

It is recommended to carry woollen clothes, gloves, shoes and gears while travelling during offseason.

Camel Safari in Hunder Sand Dunes

Riding a two-humped camel in a desert surrounded by snowcapped mountains at 3,100 meters above sea level seems like a fantasy. At Hunder, you will get to live this fantasy. Take a safari on the double-humped camels called the Bactrian through the sand dunes of the Hunder – ‘The Desert in the Sky’. It offers a very picturesque landscape but is usually crowded during the peak season.

Diskit Monastery

The Diskit Monastery, also known as Diskit Gompa is the oldest and largest Buddhist Monastery in the Nubra Valley. It was founded by the Changzem Tserab Zangpo in the 14th century. The Monastery is associated with the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Drive up to the Monastery and enjoy the view of the beautiful Nubra Valley from the top.  

Turtuk Village

Opened for tourists in 2010, Turtuk is a remote village that is rich with the inhabitant Balti Muslim’s culture. Walk around the town situated on the bank of the Shyok river, through buckwheat and barley fields, scanty little homes and narrow pathways to meet the warm Balti families. The village lies on the border touching Pakistan’s Gilgit – Baltistan region. Visit the Balti Heritage Museum here to get an insight on the Balti culture. Maitreya Buddha

Yarab Tso Sumur

Sumur village is located close to the Diksit Monastery. Like Hunder it is also well known for the sand dunes. Besides that, it also leads you to the sacred Yarab Tso lake among the desert type terrain. It has one of the prettiest sights in the valley. 

Khardung La

At an altitude of 5,359 meters, the Khardung La pass is the ‘highest motorable road in the world’. This is the only road to reach Nubra Valley. It is a very popular tourist attraction. Tourists on a Ladakh trip ensure that it is a part of their itinerary. You can expect to see some traffic here, but the view of the gigantic mountain ranges and the gorgeous valleys from here is absolutely delightful.

Samstanling Monastery

Samstanling Monastery was built in 1840 and is located at the foot of the barren mountain in the Sumur village. The Monastery does have a rather modern look and is home to around 100 monks residing there. There is a serene and peaceful spiritual aura across the entire Monastery with chanting from its two prayer halls being heard throughout.  

How to reach Nubra Valley

The best option to reach Nubra Valley is from Leh. Most Leh Ladakh tour packages offer to stay at Leh for acclimatization before embarking on the journey towards Nubra Valley.

The most common and best route from Leh to Nubra Valley would take you approximately 5 to 6 hours. This is mainly dependent on the breaks taken and the time spent at Khardung La. It is highly recommended to restrict your halt at Khardung La to under 15 minutes as exposing yourself to the freezing weather outside for longer than that can result in AMS.
