Next Month's Horror Book Club Pick will be Goddess of Filth by V. Castro "
“Five of us sat in a circle doing our best to emulate the girls in The Craft, hoping to unleash some power to take us all away from our home to the place of our dreams. But we weren’t witches. We were five Chicanas living in San Antonio, Texas, one year out of high school.”
One hot summer night, best friends Lourdes, Fernanda, Ana, Perla, and Pauline hold a séance. It’s all fun and games at first, but their tipsy laughter turns to terror when the flames burn straight through their prayer candles and Fernanda starts crawling toward her friends and chanting in Nahuatl, the language of their Aztec ancestors.
Over the next few weeks, shy, modest Fernanda starts acting strangely—smearing herself in black makeup, shredding her hands on rose thorns, sucking sin out of the mouths of the guilty. The local priest is convinced it's a demon, but Lourdes begins to suspect it’s something else—something far more ancient and powerful.
As Father Moreno's obsession with Fernanda grows, Lourdes enlists the help of her “bruja Craft crew” and a professor, Dr. Camacho, to understand what is happening to her friend in this unholy tale of possession-gone-right."

a small rant for writers on the internet, by a writer on the internet
First of all, I just want to be clear, I’ve wanted to say this for a long time. I’m a big time fan of both Jenna and Julien as creators, and I respect the way they handled this situation a lot. But seeing the way some people responded to these tweets reminded me of just how much it sucks to be a writer online today.
So, let’s just start by looking at what happened here, by the tweets Jenna and Julien posted on the twitter account they have for their podcasts and streams:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, what happened here, exactly?
1. Jenna and Julien posted a podcast where they read two stories from the subreddit r/nosleep
2. At least one of the authors had an issue with this, based on the fact that they’re trying to write and publish a book, and sell stories to podcasts and such.
Jenna and Julien had not asked the authors permission to read they stories, which is straight up violation of the rules of this subreddit. The rules can be found on the sidebar of the page, and are pretty clear.
Tumblr media
Jenna and Julien admitted to not having read these rules, as an oversight. This should obviously not happen, but it did, they took the podcast down, apologized and are working on fixing this behind the scenes.
Which is mature, and the right thing to do, and we need to remember that they’re just two people, and Jenna’s mother, working on this podcast. Mistakes happen.
Let’s move on.
3. Jenna and Julien takes the podcast down, and writes the series of tweets above.
Things seems to be dealt with.
But then I took notice of one of the tweets from J&J, about how people should stop defending them in the replies.
I seriously had to read that twice.
These are two professional creators, coming onto twitter, admitting a mistake. Saying clearly what they did wrong, and showing the rules they broke.
Are people seriously trying to blame the original authors here..?
LMAO JK, of fucking course they are.

Those of you who have never spent hours upon hours on working on something, and then wanting someone to actually see it, might not get why this pisses me off so much.
But seriously, imagine.
You work so hard on something, for a long time. You finish it, you’re proud of it, but you don’t have the tools to get it out to the public in any other way than to show it off for free, and hope people like it, and maybe want to see more of what you do, so you could make money off it.
You wish you could make money off this, so you could spend more time pursuing this passion, and get some pay off from all the time you spend on it. It may be scary to show it off for free.
There are rules to the place where you showed it off tho, that protects you from anyone stealing it.
Then someone finds your thing, and likes it. So they take it over to their place, and shows it off to a lot more people.
Maybe at first you’re happy. Because now people are getting their eyes open for your hard work!
But then you learn that the people who’s showing it off are taking money for it. Money that goes straight into their pocket, money for showing off the work you spent hours on.
Does that sound “pressed” to you?
“Overly sensitive”?
The thing is, just because someone is putting something up on the internet to share, it does not mean it’s free for all to use.
There are rules at works at many of these sites to protect the creators.
When these rules are not followed, the creators are allowed to feel unhappy about it.
Many of the writers of places like r/nosleep are trying to make it as authors. Some have done it.
Exposure is a great way for that to happen!
But not when that exposure comes from someone who didn’t follow the rules, didn’t ask for permission, and on top of it, are making profit out of it, you as a creator are allowed to be upset.
If you wanna be a bitch about it just to get attention from a creator you like, maybe you should re-evaluate your choices, dude.

Writing Exercise
What does the word craft mean to you?
The word craft means to create something from my mind, from my minds eye to make what i see so others can see it as well.
What writers do you think of when you write?
I think of Poe, King, and the writers of the /rnosleep on reddit and the writers of the original creepypasta website.
Whose first lines drop you right into the fictive dream time and time again?
There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife. The knife had a handle of polished black bone, and a blade finer and sharper than any razor. If it sliced you, you might not even know you had been cut, not immediately.- The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.
How does their craftsmanship inform your reading experience?
It brings me a thrill in that the monster could theoretically be real and consume me, weather it be a human, ideal, or a true gruesome monsters. Imakes me want to

small update: I’m very happy to see people enganging with this post, and seeing the issue!
Jenna and Julien recently uploaded a video to their podcast channel where they talk about what happened, and I think it’s a really good talk, with very good points, and I encourage y’all to take the time to listen!
