If you saw my video on Tuesday, then you know that there’s an evolutionary reason that beetles are attracted to coontie. Furthermore, this plant is the larval host for the atala butterfly and echo moth. But what about all these other insects I saw on the coontie?!

Weirdly enough, I couldn’t find many sources talking about that. UF IFAS had a brief mention of the fact that it attracts birds and the atala butterfly, but nothing about any other insects. 🐝 A Berkeley blog post mentioned that cycads evolved to be pollinated by beetles and small bees, but it didn’t make mention of the larger bees, wasps, and flies that I saw all over this small stretch of coontie.

So here’s what I’d say is happening: although coontie doesn’t produce flowers, the pollen it produces must be enough to entice a large and varied collection of pollinators—especially this time of year when fewer flowering plants are in bloom.

Something I love about ecology is that the natural world is SO VAST, and there is SO MUCH information that is either undiscovered or undocumented. It’s so exciting to be making these observations, knowing that the bees are buzzing around whether or not we humans understand why.

Wk 19: Disney’s Riviera Resort NOW OPEN!

If you’re a DVC (Disney Vacation Club) member, then a new resort has opened up at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida! Disney’s Riviera Resort is a beautiful resort that opened on December 16, 2019, and it features recreational amenities such as swimming and a fitness center. There is also a character dining experience at a new restaurant called Topolino’s Terrace. If you are looking for a quick bite to eat, look no further! At Primo Piatto, you can grab a quick bite to eat with tasty meals or you can take something to eat as a grab-and-go option.

There are various room rates at this new deluxe resort that features rooms on a starting price level and moving up to the more expensive rooms. The least expensive room is the Tower Studio and it starts at $356 a night, excluding tax, while the most expensive resort room is the 3 Bedroom Grand Villa, set at a price of $2,414 a night, excluding tax. The design aesthetic is a very unique style at the Walt Disney World Resort. Art encompasses the entire resort with unique paintings of Disney characters and films, while all being moderately themed to the European Riviera.

One of the main reasons that urges guests to stay at Disney’s Riviera Resort, is that there is transportation provided by the Disney Skyliner, since it is a connected resort to the Epcot line of the system. You also get a great view of the firework shows going on at both Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
