Priest: Emberdawn, a mid-furred dark ginger tabby molly with green eyes. She has a broad build. Her sister is Mosspelt. Her mentor was Kitefeather of the Windpaws, since the previous Rivertail priest passed on before training an apprentice.

Master Hunter: Rippleclaw, a short haired pale blue-gray tom with much darker stripes, green eyes, and significant scarring. He has a thick, muscular build. His mate is Graypool and their kittens were Swan, Morning, and Splash, none of whom survived kithood. His and Graypool’s adopted kittens are Stonefur and Mistydawn. Master Artisan: Petaldust, a long haired dilute gray and brown tortoiseshell molly with light green eyes. She has a thick build. Her parents were Hailstep and Echomist and her siblings are Duckwing and Beetlenose. Her mentor was Fallowtail and her apprentice was Reedtail.

There are so many name changes because the canonical RiverClan was one of the biggest offenders of my core naming rules: 1) must be able to be plausibly found naturally in SW Scotland, 2) minimize repeat prefixes and suffixes. (in this case: so many dawns and so many -furs)

Cats who are "revived" kittens:

Sharkstrike -> based on Leopardfur's siblings, who are semi-canonically named Waterkit, Oatkit, and Carpkit.

Cats who are a different gender from canon:

Claybelly/Loudbelly is trans fem (she/her)

Duckwing/Voleclaw is nonbinary (they/them)

Frondfeather/Greenflower is questioning nonbinary/molly, she hasn't quite figured herself out yet and uses she/they pronouns. As an adult, they will be nonbinary, but continue to use she/they.

Thunderheart Shire

Blueflame is mates with Rosebloom and Oakheart! How much of Blueflame’s relationship with Oakheart does Rosebloom know about? Is she in any sort of relationship with Oakheart/will she be in StarClan?

I always love to see what rename people give White-eye/One-eye and Owlsong is now one of my favorites!

I like the picks of Darkstripe as Mortician and Mousefur as Scribe and I’m wondering why you decided to put them in those roles!

More Rosebloom questions; what made you decide to have her be the mother of Longtail and Wildmane? And what was her relationship with Patchpelt like?

PEBBLEFUR! Why did you decide to change her name from Brindleface? How did you land on Pebblefur? What made you decide to change Pebblefur’s mate to Darkstripe? Will their kits still be Ash, Fern, Tulip, and Elder? What does she see in him

What sort of relationship do Tigerclaw and Nightmist have? With Blueflame as a mentor, I’d imagine they’d butt heads pretty often!

Broad questions for the apprentices, excluding Raven and Fire: how did you decide who would mentor them when changing their mentors?

Shadoweye Shire

Why did you choose Darkfeather and her kits to be Brokentail’s mate and kits? 

It’s interesting that Newtspeck’s kits are listed with a known sire (which makes me wonder if Sunset will be plot relevant - a BloodClan cat, perhaps?) while Scorchwind’s kits are not - I would love love love to hear more about this!!!!!!

I’m interested to learn more about Blossom; do she and Bog still die, leaving Brokentail heir-less? Do just one of them die? I like all the politics at play here!

Rivertail Shire

What changes from Stormstrike’s canon backstory? Does he train as a roamer after dislocating his jaw and learn from the barn cats? Does Rainflower still try to change his name? Are you keeping the Mapleshade haunting?

I’ve noticed that Rippleclaw’s mate AND former apprentice is Graypool. I would love to hear more about that situation, as well as Rivertail Shire’s thoughts on it.

I love the rename of Blackclaw to Deepclaw! Interesting that his mate is his apprentice’s littermate.

What is the dynamic between Graypool, Rippleclaw, and Oakheart? Stonefur and Mistydawn don’t know that Graypool is their ADOPTED mother - do they think Graypool and Oakheart were mates and then broke up? What does Rippleclaw think of them? Also - interesting that  Stonefur’s father is also his mentor! Is that normal for Rivertail Shire? 

Ohh, Mosspelt’s mate is also her mentor’s sibling - interesting!

Windpaw Shire

It’s interesting that Meadowslip’s former mate is Mole! What did Windpaw Shire think of their relationship? Did her kits ever want to wander around with Mole instead of staying in Windpaw Shire?

Okay okay that's all I have for now, thank you for letting me ramble!

Okay so lots of really good questions! I'll answer as many as I can lol.

Thunderheart Shire:

Blueflame/Rosebloom/Oakheart:

Rose knows about all of it! She and Thrushpelt are/were Blueflame's confidants during the whole situation, but Rose and Blue don't become mates until after Blue has given up her kits. Rose becomes a source of comfort during this period that ultimately grows into a relationship. In the Stars (there will be a post on shire religion here soon!) I'd imagine that they would be a poly group, with Blue being mates with both Oak and Rose while Oak and Rose are romantic at most with one another.

2. Owlsong

Thank you! I've always loved the prefix Owl- and jumped at the chance to use it lol

3. Darkstripe and Mousefur's Roles

So this was partially thought out and partially me just needing to fill those slots lol. In Darkstripe's case, idk, his personality just made me think that he would be a good fit for the mortician. It would also give him more of a voice in the clan (as a guild member) that would be more in Fireheart's face once he becomes deputy. As for Mousefur, her characterization in canon as traditional made me think she would be a good fit, deeply caring for the roots and traditions of her shire.

4. Rosebloom + Patchpelt = Longtail and Wildfang

This was in all honesty just part of fixing the family tree lol. Also, because I wanted Rosebloom to get a chance at being a mother. She and Patchpelt weren't mates for long, and they split once their kits become apprentices. They realized that they just didn't have the spark they once had and instead of forcing it, decided it would be better to separate.

5. Pebblefur's name and mate!

Pebblefur was a change almost exclusively because her name and coloring just didn't match lol. When I searched "brindle" what came up was a stripey, brown coloring. She's gray and not stripey. So I decided to change her name to something that evoked her appearance. Pebblefur fit the bill lol. As for her relationship with Darkstripe, it's complex. She is initially part of the pro-Tigerclaw group (I wanted some she-cats in there), appreciating his strength and his charisma. During this time, she falls for Darkstripe. And he, wanting prestige within the shire (which can come from a mate and kits) agrees to be her mate. She certainly loves him, and he likely did at some point, but by the time Tigerclaw's betrayal is revealed, they are on the rocks. And when Darkstripe remains loyal to Tiger, Pebble breaks off their relationship. Them breaking up is the final straw that sends Darkstripe out of the Thunderhearts and to Tiger. And yes! Ash, Fern, and Iris (replacing Tulip and Elder) are their kittens! I thought Darkstripe -> Ashfur would be some fun lore.

6. Tiger and Night

You basically hit the nail on the head. Nightmist is level-headed, diplomatic, and shrewd. She is not dissimilar from her brother personality wise, but she uses her cunning and charisma for the gain of the shire, rather than her own ambitions. She was also close friends with Redtail, and hated how her brother seemed to have him wrapped around his claw. She strongly disapproves of her brother's posse of "friends" and has a very strained relationship with him. That strain turns into disowning and a want for vengeance once the truth about Tiger comes out. This will be plot relevant.

7. Mentors

This honestly came down to who was available in each role to mentor. Gray really only had one option: Wildfang. Sparrowpelt, as Master Lorekeeper, would be another option, but I can't imagine he would want an apprentice in his old age. As for Dust, I wanted him to have Longtail, a Tigerclaw supporter, as mentor. This would explain his turn to Tigerclaw and his group as an adult. As for Sand, I thought Lionheart should have an apprentice and Sand was open lol. I wish I could've fit Whitestorm in there, but he'll get a chance later.

Shadoweye Shire:

Darkfeather

I liked the concept of honor-siring from @bonefall 's better bones rewrite and thought it would be perfect for Brokentail. He is the "king" of his shire and would want to have an heir. With all of his lives remaining, he presumably thought he would have a long time to raise and train his kits to follow in his footsteps. Unfortunately for him (and fortunately for the rest of the shires), he didn't get that chance. Darkfeather was an only kitten who desperately wanted the recognition that mothering the thegn's kits would have. She was around his age, pretty, and well-liked. Hence, she and Brokentail agreed to have kittens.

2. Sunset and Newtspeck

I will say that Sunset is a canonical cat, I just changed his backstory and original name. He'll come back lol. As for Scorchwind, he's just a very private cat. His brother's antics with Yellowfang and Foxheart made him uneasy, and he decided to keep his mouth closed when he fell for an outsider. As for whether his kits will ever have a named mother, I haven't decided.

3. Bog and Blossom

Blossom dies, Bog lives. Bog is Broken's official heir, but shire politics will intervene and he will never become the thegn. He will actually decline the chance as an adult after Rookfoot dies, instead supporting his younger brother Rowanclaw. Bog ends up becoming a priest in his later years, trying as hard as he can to distance himself from his father's legacy.

Rivertail Shire:

Stormstrike's backstory

I think very little would change. His mother would still try to rename him, but his father fights harder this time and Brambleberry would be enough to override her in front of Hailstep. As such, he keeps the name Storm but is still practically disowned by his mother. The rest of his story plays out the same... with the exception of Mapleshade. I haven't 100% decided on this, but I don't think Mapleshade would be as explicitly involved in his life. I am trying to keep the Stars a distant presence, so Mapleshade may be involved, just in a much less direct capacity.

2. Claybelly

3. Rippleclaw and Graypool

Going to be honest, this was originally a mistake I made way back when first putting the allegiances together. I accidentally made them both mates and mentor-apprentice. However, I thought I could make something from it and address another issue that commonly occurs within the canonical series (unintentionally I image). Rivertail Shire is not exactly pleased or comfortable with this pairing. To be 100% transparent, Graypool was groomed. Rippleclaw is a much older tom who took advantage of the younger, insecure she-cat. Graypool found comfort in him, not knowing that she was being manipulated. Everything comes crashing down after their kits die and she is protected from the backlash by Willowbreeze, Oakheart, and Stormstrike. Rippleclaw stays in the shire, but he is never as well respected again. During this same time frame, Oakheart brings his kits back into the clan. Graypool, distraught and hurting, agrees to raise them as a way to keep her mind off of her pain. She adores Stone and Misty and in a way feel indebted to them for saving her from a much darker existence. Poor Graypool really goes through the ringer.

6. Graypool, Oakheart, and Rippleclaw

Let's just say Rippleclaw is deeply unhappy with the entire situation. Oakheart acts as a buffer between Graypool and Rippleclaw. Oak and Gray are never mates, just very close friends who agree to co-parent the kits. However, they act as mates in front of the shire and the kittens in an effort to provide stability for Stone and Misty. As for Oak being Stone's mentor, this was a decision Hailstep made more for practicality than anything else. Oakheart was a strong, young warrior with the characteristics of a good reeve and possibly thegn, but he had not had an apprentice. Stone was the right age and Hailstep figured the two would be successful as a mentor-apprentice pair regardless of their kinship.

7. Mosspelt

This one comes down to really tight age gaps between mentors and apprentices during the end of Hailstep's thegnship. Frogleap and Mosspelt are only around 6 months apart in age, but the shire needed a mentor for the new apprentice and so Sunfish was chosen, despite being a brand new churl herself. It's very similar to Fireheart and Cinderpaw age-wise. Fireheart was very young when he got Cinder as an apprentice.

Windpaw Shire

Mole and Meadowslip

They kept their relationship as secret as they possibly could. Mole, being a cat from outside the shire, was deemed entirely unacceptable by the very uptight Windpaws. He was not from the shire and also not a believer in the Stars (which is a huge deal for the Windpaws). Some cats could have guessed that they were mates, but no one said anything. Mole was gone by the time the kits were born, and although he returned each season with his cats, he and Meadowslip did their best to maintain their cover. The kits always stayed with Meadowslip.

Thank you! I wanted to use some more unique names and in the process of changing all of the disability-based names to typical warrior/churl names, I landed on Ouzel.

Most mentor/apprentice relationships have been changed to account for the different churl roles. I tried to keep the same ones where I could, but most had to change.

Some cats ages have also been shifted around. For most part though, I kept these changes minimal. The churls are listed in age order, so you may notice some differences from canon. The Thunderhearts are the most consistent with canonical ages of the shires.

Many cats have had their parents, siblings, etc. change. I do have a slightly outdated family tree here. I will be posting an updated one in the near future.

okay first of all those maps are GORGEOUS. im so impressed they look so wonderful! any considerations/insights you have into putting together the territory maps? im chewing on the territories for my own rewrite and would love to hear your thought process

secondly, would you be willing to share whose kits the five are/how they ended up in all their different clans? (also i dont remember - does the ‘kin of your kin’ prophecy go only to firestar or to all of the leaders?)

Thank you!! My main considerations were a) what kind of relationships I wanted the different clans/shires to have and b) how could I make the territories more distinct.

For that first point, I wanted to make sure to keep the relationships between shires balanced. Shires that border one another without major barriers tend to have worse relationships than those who don't. For example, in the Forest, Shadow and Wind border one another and there are numerous examples of them fighting, both in the main series and in field guides. Same applies to River and Thunder, since the river isn't much of a barrier for River. On the other hand, the thunderpath serves as a good barrier between Shadow and Thunder and the gorge does the same for Wind and River. The clearer the boundary, the less aggression over borders. I kept that in mind throughout. What shires did I want to like one another, and which ones did I not? I wanted Wind and Shadow to have a shaky relationship in both territories, since they already have a lot of cultural things that are in conflict with one another (the core one being piety, but that's a whole other can of worms lol).

For my second goal, the main thing was making Sky not just Thunder that jumps better. I decided cats from a rocky environment that excelled in climbing rock faces, etc. would be a good fit for that. I applied the same logic to the lake territory. Shadow is now firmly a bog/marsh group, so I moved them around to the marshy part of the lake and then filled in what was left. I added more houses so Sky could keep Daylight Warriors, which was one of their most unique ranks in canon. My guiding star in all of this has been making the clans/shires unique with different outlooks on religion, differing cultures, differing territories, etc. while still maintaining the unified social structure. Where someone lives can have a huge impact on that. Thunder, Sky, and Shadow all being forest groups bugged me, so I made Sky and Shadow not forest anymore to give them their own thing.

As for the five -- I'll go cat by cat:

Goldenheart is Skyfall:Tigerheart. He is the son of Tawnypelt and Rowanclaw, just like in canon. Only this time, Rowanclaw is the son of Brokenstar. As a result, Goldenheart is the grandson of the two biggest antagonists from the first arc. His siblings are Dawnshine and Flametail, same as in canon again. I broke Jayfeather's power into two and Goldenheart gets the emotion-sensing part that Jayfeather had in canon. Goldenheart can sense the emotions of those around him. He is a hunter, and once Rowanclaw becomes thegn he also becomes the thegn's-heir of Shadoweye Shire.

Lionblaze is the son of Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw (for real this time). Juniperkit and Dandelionkit are now his littermates, and Sparkpelt and Alderheart will be from a future litter. He is Goldenheart's cousin via Brambleclaw and Jayfeather and Hollyleaf's cousin via Squirrelflight. He has the same power that he does in canon: invincibility in battle. He is a hunter of Thunderheart Shire.

Jayfeather is the son of Leafpool and Mothwing (who is a trans molly in Skyfall). He lives in Rivertail Shire with Mothwing and is a physician alongside her. Moth was his mother as well as mentor. Willowshine is now the priest's apprentice. Jayfeather can walk in the dreams of others. He starts out not knowing his true parentage. He is raised as a foundling kit.

Hollyleaf is the daughter of Leafpool and Crowfeather. She and Jay are from the same litter, they just have different sires. She lives in Windpaw Shire with her father, Crow, and was raised by Nightcloud as Breezepelt's sister. She believes she is Nightcloud's biological daughter, and does not know that Leafpool is her biological mom. Hollyleaf has the power of navigation. Her paws will always direct her in the direction she should be going, no matter how lost she is. This makes her phenomenal in the tunnels and as such she is a Windshire tunneler.

Dovewing is the daughter of Nettlesplash and Mintfur of Skyclaw Shire. Ivypool is still her sister, they're both just in Skyshire now. Dovewing is a hunter, aided by her super senses. Just like in canon, all of her senses are heightened and she can see, hear, and smell things that are much farther away than most cats. Her strongest sense is her hearing.

Okay, now the Power of Five prophecy. In the rewrite, all of the shire's preists receive the prophecy, not just Fireheart. In this situation, the kin requirement of the prophecy is not kinship to Fireheart, but instead kinship to Cloudstorm (Cloudstar) of Ancient Skyclaw Shire. Since Cloudstorm's kittens remained in the forest, and his siblings [to be named] went with him to the gorge, his kin could plausibly be in every shire. In order to better match the attitudes of the various shires when Sky is driven out, his kittens now go to the Shadoweyes rather than Thunderhearts. BUT Cloudstorm's son, Gorseclaw, has kits with a Thunderheart molly, resulting in Sky blood in Thundershire. Continue down the many generations and you end up with this: Tawnypelt and Brambleclaw (through Gorseclaw -> many generations -> Tigerclaw), Squirrelflight and Leafpool (through Gorseclaw -> many generations -> Sandstorm), Rowanclaw (through Orchidflame [Spottedpelt] -> many generations -> Brokentail), and Mintfur (through Cloudstorm's sister -> many generations -> Rainfur, her father). Continue this down to these cat's kittens and you get the five, all of whom are incredibly distantly related to Cloudstorm (like there is nearly a century of separation between them in the timeline). But the Stars don't care, that's good enough. The prophecy, There will be five, kin of the skies, who will unite all paws under the stars, is now about the five reuniting the Skyclaws with the other shires.
