Solstice Scents Review

Man, finally getting around to writing my thoughts on my First Ever Solstice Scents Order (or two, actually.) I've had all of these for around a month now, and just because of all the other smells i've had going on, haven't really gotten around to them. But i'm taking the time now. Checkin' 'em off my LIST.

I'll be going over my experience ordering from Solstice Scents, as well as the scents Foxcroft, Snowshoe Pass, Violet Mallow, Lace Draped Spectre, Riverside Hayride, Nightgown, White Fox, and Winter Dove. Let's do it to it.

ORDERING FROM SOLSTICE SCENTS

So, not gonna lie, I put off ordering from this house mostly because of their website. I'm a graphic designer, and a bit of a branding snob, and the look of the website, not even considering the purposefully rustic theme, just the way it's built, is a little bit... Dated. Not the worst crime imaginable, but actually navigating the site made it worse: having multiple pages for the different sizes of one scent would clutter pages, not having an easily findeable scent list for their seasonal collections (if it exists, I STILL haven't found it), not knowing what was Just Seasonal and what was GC because of how they'll do limited seasonal releases of GC scents in normally unavailable sizes or formats... It was all very confusing. Their photography is nice, though, I'll give them that. Goes with the general look of the brand well. (And that's not like, subtle shade - I know the difference between a purposefully down-to-earth design, and something lookin' dated. Their purposeful branding, in a general sense, is not dated.)

Placed my order. The drop-down list for available free samples was handy. I wish they mentioned that, if it's your first order, you can ask for an additional free sample - I only knew about that practice from a different review.

TAT was pretty dang fast - a couple days and it was coming my way. The greatest delight, aside from the scents themselves, was their packaging: It's fantastic. A far cry from my complaints about their website. Their designs look good, the cards that came with the order were lovely, I love the little CD-case-type thing that the samples come in, and when I later placed a second order for a 5ml of Winter Dove, I loved the box it came in, too. Love the scent names in that snappy handwriting... It was just, good. Was nice getting actual designed packaging, rather than just bottles wrapped in bubble wrap or in a plain box. Very professional. No leaks. No issues. A good, clean-cut order.

(Additionally, when I did my second order and Lace Draped Spectre was still available on their free sample dropdown, even though it was sold out and wasn't going to be restocked anymore for the season, they still honored it. Which. Hell yeah.)

Overall, very positive experiences! Onto the scents.

FOXCROFT (PERFUME OIL) || Decaying Leaves, Rich Black Soil, Dry Leaves, Fall Air, Woods, Chimney Smoke.

I put this on, and the very first note I get hit with, without even looking at the notes, is sweet smoke. The first time I ever tried this, that smoke straight-up went BBQ-y for the first five minutes of wear, but it doesn't do that anymore - it's just... Very strong woodsmoke with a hint of sweetness. The smoke fades after just a few minutes, and I start getting the other atmospheric notes: A woody note that smells fresh and sap-sticky, like a newly splintered evergreen branch; dry fall leaves that smell so realistic that I can picture picking them up and crunching them in my hand; the emptiness of cool fall air; and damp earth from a rainstorm that happened the other day. The smoke's still there, kind of encompassing everything, but it's much lighter now.

And... Looking at the notes, I guess that's literally everything that's in it! Dang. Talk about a scent being dead-on. On the dry-down, this takes on a warm, almost... Maple-y quality? Like slightly burnt maple leaves. I like it. It's really cozy.

This wears a bit close to the skin on me without actually being light, but lasts for a pretty long time - a few hours in and even after scrubbing it from my wrist with dish soap, i'm still smelling earth and decaying leaves.

tl;dr: a very realistic fall atmospheric with woody, dry leaf, and damp earth nuances and a nice swirl of smoke. Dries down to a maple-like sweetness.

RATING: 5/5. A really beautiful atmospheric. I'm not really interested in smelling like it, but it's objectively very well made.

SNOWSHOE PASS (PERFUME OIL) || White Amber, White Musk, Vanilla Accord, Peppermint Cream, Cold Winds.

Mmmm. Mmmm. This smells absolutely tasty. The vanilla accord is rich and exceptionally creamy, with a super true-to-life vanilla extract smell. The peppermint cream blends well with it - it's hard to detect, but gives a slight minty edge to the vanilla. My roommate, from a distance, says it smells like cooked brownies. I don't necessarily agree--it doesn't strike me as chocolatey in the least--but I could see how someone might think that. It might be thanks to the amber - i've noticed some ambers can read a bit chocolate-like.

Admittedly, the cold winds note is kinda gone at this point - it was very present when I first got the sample, but now, I don't really get anything that hits my nose as particularly chilly.

This wears pretty strongly on my wrist, doesn't fade quickly, and obviously has some good sillage if my roommate is smelling it from like, 3-4 feet away.

tl;dr: True to life foody, creamy, rich vanilla with a hint of mintiness.

RATING: 4/5. I wish the white amber and white musk were a bit more detectable to me, and that the cold wind note hadn't vanished. Even so, this is a really delicious, rich vanilla scent.

VIOLET MALLOW (PERFUME OIL) || Marshmallow Cream, Violet Flowers, Vanilla Bean, White Musk.

This one's easy. It smells ex act ly like a cabbage patch doll's face - that floral-vanilla slightly rubbery scent. Sometimes Solstice Scents' vanilla note will have a bit of that rubbery quality for me, and the violets in this, rather than just living on their own in their signature Purple Burp smell, blends well and amps up the cabbage patch kids smell. Which is great for me, because i've been dying for a perfume that smells like it - I actually asked for this one as my free sample because people had been saying it smells like that. And it does. Spot on.

Wears strong on my wrist, with sillage of like a foot or two when wet, then maybe 6 inches or so when dry.

tl;dr: Cabbage Patch doll!

RATING: 4/5. Kinda simple, but fills a very specific desire in me. I don't even know if i'll wear it that much, but I loooove just having this smell on hand whenever I wanna whiff it. Plus, even if the vanilla/marshmallow is a bit rubbery, I love a violet scent where the violets don't smell bad.

LACE DRAPED SPECTRE - REFORMULATED (PERFUME OIL) || Vanilla Musk, Spicy Pink Carnation, Pink Pepper, Rose, White Musk.

This... This grew on me so fast, and is now one of my favorite perfumes. Holy shit. This is just so, so good.

When I first tried it out, I took one whiff and went, 'oh! So THAT'S what a carnation smells like!' I was familiar with the smell of carnations, but had never really matched the smell to the flower, but this was so dead-on that there's really just no mistaking it. The connection was made instantly. It's a green, dewy, velvety, heady, smooth, non-powdery, lush-smelling flower, with just a hint of a spicy kick to it - which i'm sure is amped up by the pink pepper. The vanilla musk amps up that delicious carnation and makes the scent a bit humid and sweet. That's about all I can really, for-sure detect in this... But, god, I don't think it NEEDS anything else. It's SO GOOD.

Got HELLA sillage and HELLA longevity - I put this on and can smell it all day. God. I have two 1mls of it and I hope they last me 'til fall. Seriously, it's so good.

tl;dr: A fantastic, realistic carnation note, amped by vanilla musk and with a kick of pink pepper.

RATING: 6/5. This is a holy grail scent, bay-bee. I've had some good florals since, but this was the first good floral. This is the one that changed my mind about florals.

RIVERSIDE HAYRIDE (PERFUME OIL) || Moist Dirt, White Carnations, Fallen Leaves, Bare Branches, Hay & a Hint of Pressed Apples Carried on the Breeze from Corvin's Apple Orchard.

I put this on, and before I can even close the sample vial, I get hit with this wave of spiced, dried, tart apples - but that gets subtler after only 10, 15 minutes of wear. What I smell at the top at that point is a very subtle, velvety carnation - not nearly as lush as the carnation note in lace-draped, it's more like... If a bed of carnations was a few feet away. It also smells pretty wet, with a notable cool air note, and some damp green-ness. At this point, the apples are so subtle that they're at the bottom of the scent, just a soft sweetness with an edge of tart, very realistic for a dried apple scent, and I can't smell the spices anymore.

Sometimes I also pick up a weird sourness that isn't the apples, and almost smells... Milky? Like milk that's kinda nearing its expiry date and you're not really sure if it's bad or not. I don't get it all the time, and it's not bad enough to ruin the scent, but it's there. Looking at the notes, I think that sour smell is actually the hay.

On the dry-down, that hay gets stronger, and basically all i'm getting is the hay and maybe a hint of the apple. If you like hay, this would be good for you. The last note I can detect before it disappears is tart green apple. Despite not having a lot of sillage, apart from that first wave of apple, this wears VERY strongly on my wrist.

tl;dr: A velvety floral atmospheric with touches of cool air, green-ness, and an ample helping of dried apples, that dries down to strong hay and faint apple.

RATING: 3.5/5. Well made, but I could do without that strong hay note. I say. About a scent with 'hayride' in the name. Guess that's what I get.

NIGHTGOWN (PERFUME OIL) || Vanilla, White Chocolate, Tuberose & Tiare Flowers.

This is lovely - I actually like it more than I thought I would, since i'm really not into chocolate notes, even white chocolate, and white florals generally aren't my thing. But this blends beautifully: the tuberose and tiare are soft and delicate without smelling soapy or indolic like so many white florals can, and the white chocolate and vanilla round it out, balance the floral qualities, and give the scent some depth. It's really lovely - i've worn it to bed a couple times, so I guess the name 'nightgown' fits.

Dries down to stronger vanilla and realistic white chocolate with a light floral edge. Very elegant and creamy. Wears close to the skin for a few hours before it begins to fade.

tl;dr: Soft, delicate white flowers balanced by gentle, creamy sweet notes of white chocolate and vanilla, the latter taking over on the dry-down.

RATING: 5/5. Another one I probably won't wear a lot, but it's objectively beautiful. Solstice Scents REALLY can do no wrong with florals, i'm beginning to feel like.

WHITE FOX (PERFUME OIL) || Vanilla Musk, White Fur, Woods, Snow Laced With a Vein of Dirt.

So, reading reviews of White Fox, it seemed to be pretty hit or miss. Half the time, it was a beautiful vanilla scent with atmospheric notes; the other half, burning plastic. I wasn't sure what I would get, but I was willing to take the risk.

What I ultimately get is plasticky vanilla. Not the worst, but, uh, not the best, either. I get something very minty, too, even though peppermint isn't a note in this (maybe it's the woods note, some evergreens), and it makes that plasticky vanilla almost... Burning. Chemical-y. It mellows out some with wear, though: the burniness goes away, and the vanilla becomes less plastic (but not totally un-plastic) and more soft and fuzzy, so, decently wearable. The fur and dirt are distinguishable in this, too, and round out the sweet notes well.

Dries down to a subtle vanilla musk sitting underneath some really notable dirt, and finally, before it fades, become simply dirt and fur. Lasts for a good handful of hours, and has some good sillage while wet.

tl;dr: Burning plastic kinda medicinal smelling vanilla that mellows out to a softer, fuzzier vanilla, rounded out by dirt and fur.

RATING: 3/5. I'm honestly debating rating this a bit lower, because it starts out so bleh, but with wear it's okay. ...But just okay.

WINTER DOVE (PERFUME OIL) || Vanilla Crystals, Spicy Carnation, Nutmeg, Cream.

Man, this is such good shit. It's not LDS, but by god, it'll do.

For the first, like, 5 minutes, I get straight eggnog from the nutmeg and cream, and then it just becomes this beautiful, rich, creamy carnation note. The carnation's pretty spicy, but more than that, it's velvety, softly floral and green and fresh as hell. Smells real, as SS' carnation note tends to. The sugar crystals give this just a touch of sweetness, and honestly, I don't get the nutmeg as much after those first 5 minutes. It's a soft, rich, delicate scent - definitely would call this LDS' more feminine cousin. On the dry-down, the carnation fades, and the scent becomes much more creamy and foody-sweet without necessarily going back to eggnog.

Has a lot of sillage - i've gotten reports of other people smelling it real well when I walk past. (Notably, my sister said it smelled like a headshop, which kinda surprised me. I think it must'a been the spice in the carnation.) Lasts for a good handful of hours, too.

tl;dr: Eggnog, briefly, and then a sweet and creamy lush carnation scent, and then, on the drydown, creamy sweetness.

RATING: 5/5. Blind bought a 5ml for this because I didn't think I could live without Solstice Scents' carnation note, and I have no regrets.

So, final thoughts: I really, really love this house. Their florals are killer, their scents are rich and long-lasting, and at the very worst, they might go a little rubbery or maybe a little potpourri-ish, but there's nothing in this that was out-and-out awful or came across poorly made. Gonna be buying from them again, most definitely.

The campground has 16 full-hookup sites, 42 modern electric sites, 141 modern non-electric sites, and 17 rustic organized group tenting sites. The campground also has three camping cottages, 10 modern cabins and two yurts available to rent. While camping is only available year-round at 47 of these campsites, the spots never fill up in the off-season, and cottages, cabins, and yurts are available year-round. Kids love the on-site campground playground. Showers, flush toilets and a sanitation dump station are also on-site. 3. Riverside Campground Located on the shores of one of PA’s most important rivers, Riverside Campground is a privately owned campground open year-round. Nestled on the edge of the Susquehanna River, the campground has 135 sites great for campers, RVs, or tents and also offers rustic tent camping sites near a stream. Cable TV and WiFi are provided at all campsites. The campground has a Laundromat and on-site lounge that serves up adult beverages and delicious grilled food. Warm showers and flush toilets are also available year-round. The campground is just a short walk to local shops and there’s a large community park located just next door that kids will love. The park has children’s playgrounds, a skate park, soccer fields and a large pavilion. This camping option features something not common for most camping in PA; a pool, that is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. 4. The Loose Caboose Campground Offering 70 year-round campsites for tent and RV campers, The Loose Caboose Campground sits on 26-acres in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Amish Country. The campground offers large, wooded, and secluded sites. Most of the campsites at The Loose Caboose are full-hookup and can accommodate any size RVs. The heated bathhouse offers free hot showers and flush toilets. Amenities include a children’s playground, gift shop, group fire ring, dumping station and free wireless internet. Being in Amish country, this campground is nearby unlikely but inviting tourist attractions, including the Railroad Museum of PA and Toy Train Museum, both just 8 miles away. If you’re looking to hit the rides (or just eat chocolate), Hershey Park is less than 45 miles away. Major cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, Gettysburg and Washington DC are all within about 100 miles. 5. Raccoon Creek State Park Image from The Dyrt camper Brian S. Built as a public works project by the National Park Service in the 1930’s, the 7,572 acre Raccoon Creek State Park is one of the largest and most popular year round spots for camping in PA. Located just a half hour from Pittsburg, it’s a great place to steal away from the big city and immerse oneself in nature. Campers love strolling through the park’s wildflower reserve, which boasts over 700 species of plants, hiking on the 42 acres of trails and kayaking on the 100-acre Raccoon Lake. The campground at Raccoon Creek State Park has 64 modern electric campsites, 81 modern non-electric campsites, 26 tent-only sites, 4 rustic non-electric sites, 6 rustic organized group camping sites, as well as 11 modern cabins and 3 organized group cabin camping sites. The 172 modern tent and trailer campsites have access to flush toilets, warm showers and the option of electricity. While much of the campground is only open seasonally, the rustic sites are available year-round. Water and pit latrines are also available at the year-round sites. 6. Penn Avon Campground Conveniently located just two miles from the charming downtown Selinsgrove, PA, Penn Avon Campground is a year-round campground offering sites with full hookups, cable TV and free Wi-Fi. The campground also has shower houses and a dump station ($10). Kids will enjoy the on-site playground and recreational field. This campground is great for those that want to stick around for a while, offering weekly, monthly and seasonal rates to campers. Located close to the Penn Avon Campground is the Raymond B. Winter State Park, which is open for camping mid-April through mid-December. Even though the campground may not be open year-round, the park certainly is, and there’s no shortage of things to do there. Halfway Lake, the park’s main attraction, is a popular place to fish and swim during the warm months of the year. In the winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing draw visitors to the park. 7. Bald Eagle State Forest Not to be confused with the nearby Bald Eagle State Park, the Bald Eagle State Forest, named for the famous Native American Chief, is one of the best sports public camping in PA open year-round. The park offers primitive backcountry camping, group camping and 45 car camping spots with fire rings and picnic tables. Car camping spots can be reserved up to 90 days in advance by requesting a permit from the Bald Eagle State Forest district office. Group campsites require a letter of authorization from the District Forester, which take between 2-3 weeks to process. Primitive backcountry campsites do not require a permit as long as the camper stays only one night in each campsite. If you’d like to have a campfire at a backcountry campsite during the spring wildfire season, a permit is required. When not spending time at the campsite, there are a variety of things to do on the 193,000 acres of forest. Hikers will enjoy the “rugged and demanding” 189-mile Mid State Trail. Mountain bikers are not allowed on the Mid State Trail, but are allowed on nearly every other trail in the state forest. The forest also has one designated ATV trail, and two designated motorcycle trails. Hunting, fishing and horse riding opportunities also abound in the forest—there’s even a few equestrian campgrounds spread across the forest if you’re looking to make your next ride into a camping trip. 8. White’s Haven Campground and Cabins Settled on the edge of western Pennsylvania’s Cook Forest State Park, White’s Haven offers year-round wooded campsites for tents and RVs as well as cabin rentals. Cabins are primitive and have no water or bathroom, though cabin campers have access to the bathhouse. Tent sites are also primitive and RV sites have both water and electric hook-ups. The campground has a dump station for use by RV campers. Amenities include a playground, volleyball court and a fishing pond. Like much of year-round camping in PA, White’s Haven Campground is in close proximity to public lands for outdoors adventures any time of year. Cook Forest State Park is just a short drive away, and offers year-round outdoor recreation opportunities. The Clarion River flows through the park and is a popular place to canoe, kayak and tube in the summer months, and fish in the offseason. The park’s Forest Cathedral, a stand of old growth pine and hemlock trees, is a National Natural Landmark and worth a visit in all seasons. The park also has 47 miles of hiking trails and 4.3 miles of multi-use trails for biking, trail running and horseback riding. 9. Shady Rest Campground Image form The Dyrt camper Bryce Located on 16 acres in the heart of the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, Shady Rest Campground offers RV and tent camping sites for travelers just passing through and vacationers looking to set up a home base close to the Elk Mountain Ski Resort. The campground has 35 sites with water, sewer, electric and cable television. The campground also has a dump station, Wi-Fi, laundry service and showers. Primitive camping is available along Tunkhannock Creek, which also makes a great place for swimming in the summertime. Points of interest close to Shady Rest campground include Old Mill Village, an exhibit of buildings that feature the region’s history, the Steamtown National Historic Site, which features the history of steam locomotives and the Elk Mountain Ski Resort, which has some of the state’s best skiing on 27 trails over 180 acres. Day 13, April 19, 2019 Mekong Delta

It’s been a swift stay in Saigon but an action packed one none the less. After another rooftop breakfast at the Majestic hotel we finish packing and check out at 8:30am. As you can tell we’ve had a lot of early mornings this trip, but mostly early nights too. Vietnam starts their day early. We meet our speed boat in the same location as yesterday and are accompanied by another guide from Fisheye tours. Today, instead of heading north, we’re traveling south toward the Mekong Delta, the rice capital of Vietnam. Vietnam is the third biggest exporter of rice in the world. On our way we pass Saigon port and travel below many new bridges. Just a few years ago the only way to cross the boat was by ferry. While these do exist today, a series of bridges have also been constructed in some parts of the Saigon river. After Saigon part we pass the poorer section of the river with numerous house boats and riverside shacks that are deteriorating and made of run. The government is slowly trying to buy up the riverfront property and relocate the poorer families to make way for construction. You can see it happening already. In general here you will see nicer neighborhoods directly next to poorer ones.

In order to arrive at the Mekong River we will take a series of other rivers and canals. Our first stop is about 35 minutes from where we departed and is a small very very local market. The theme of the day will be not seeing other tourists. This is even more local and remote than any other market we’ve seen. They are selling fruit and fish heads and every possible cut of chicken. I have to admit it is kind of funny when you think about it: we’re visiting people and snapping photos in what they consider akin to their local super market.

We get back in the boat in the brackish water and we are surrounded by lush thick greenery, mostly water coconuts which are planted to prevent erosion. Egrets glide gracefully along the water. This is what you think of when you think of postcard Vietnam. You feel in another time here, the banks of the river are not fully developed. I wonder how long before buildings flank both sides. I hope the rapid growth doesn’t kill the magic of this place. I hope the changes here are for good—less pollution, more parks, better schooling etc. While this place has changed momentously since the early 90s when most folks got electricity, it still manages to retain an old world charm. There is also an old world way of life in many places, actual markets to buy groceries in, mom and pop shops and your local tailor, fishing and farming as a way of life. This is what Mekong life is like especially.

Around 10am we pull into a small offshoot of the canal. We pass by local homes with thatched roofs and some tin. We pass abandoned fishing boats. We see a woman manning her small boat while her husband wades through thick grey mud catching mud fish with his hands.

We pull up to a dock and unload outside a local couples home. They make tofu and show us how it’s done. It’s interesting because they don’t grow they soy beans here! They buy them. Not sure I have this 100% accurate but the process is something like this: First they soak the soya bean in water to get the milk out. Then they mix it with Pandan leaf (kind of like a skinny palm leaf that’s also used for tea like the one we tried yesterday at the Cu Chi Tunnels). They boil the mill and mix with sour water to condense it and put it in a frame to dry before selling it. Here they make both white and fried Tofu.

The owner also walks us out to his front yard which has a fish farm. He buys mini shrimp and over a period of 3-3.5 months they grow to full size. Just like in Hoi An, shrimp farms sit one next to the other.

From this family’s home we are lent the most common Vietnamese hat—the comical one. It’s not just touristy, people wear them and with good reason—they work! We ride some old school cruiser bikes through the small village, first navigating a narrow strip between fish farms . First we see an ancient home that once belonged to the proprietor of this land. Once communism came about they fled. Then we head to the towns Cau Dai temple, a relatively young religion originating in Vietnam with influences from five different faiths. There are evident influences in the temples architecture from Catholic Churches and Buddhist temples. The religion ultimately worships they eye as it sees all things. The reflection also has three saints, a Vietnamese Poet, a Chinese Revelation and Victor Hugo. There are four services a day at 6 and 12 am and pm.

The service is about to start so we bike back to the original house. Waiting for us at the table is a late morning snack of coconut and a massive popped rice treat fused together by honey and sugar. It gets stuck in your teeth easily. These popped rice treats are made right in this town if Can Giuoc. Kerran is, as always psyched about his fresh coconut and he even tops off mine. Did you know there are 25 types of coconut grown in Vietnam!?

Back on the boat we merge from the smaller canal to a bigger river and cross into the Tien Giang Province. We will cross a few given there are a total of 54 provinces in Vietnam and the country is roughly the size of california. Every time we merge we move into a wider river with more fishing and dredging boats. Here we’re in the Van Co River which will ultimately become the Song Tra which then feeds into the Mekong River. The Mekong is positively passive and definitely requires a ferry across for the areas without bridges. There are massive boats for cement here too. In fact this river even has islands. Off to the side of the main river are much smaller romantic offshoots that we soon motor into.

We disembark again in a very lush green section not too far outside Ben Tre. We walk not too far and board a Sampan boat, a wooden row boat operated by a local. She rows a bit down the river but we don’t stay on too long which is good news for my sunburn! After we get up she conveniently turns on the motor to get her back up stream!

A bubbly sixty something woman with good teeth greets us in Vietnamese. her name is the equivalent of “Ms. Seven.” She lives alone but shows us her old fashioned kitchen and I peel her into her two room home complete with a hammock because everyone has one here. There’s also electricity and TV, and a washing machine. She has chickens with adorable baby chicks and fruit—pomelo or grapefruit trees and starfruit. She’s generous with her things giving us longan and star fruit to taste.

She is just so friendly and tells me the star fruit is good for my skin and I also that I have beautiful skin which is still hilarious as I’m breaking out. It’s just because I’m pale as all hell, and unlike the western world, this part of the works treasures pale complexions. The irony that we always want what we don’t have.

We bid farewell to our new friend and meander down through the woods toward the road. An old fashioned taxi on three wheels and an open air section almost like a mini-hayride in the back. The road is narrow and of course, green, but there were electric lines running overhead. We rolled past the trenches in the ground dug for irrigation, perfect for an area with heavy wet seasons.

一年一度的洛杉磯時報書展(Los Angeles Times Festival Of Books)將於這周末在南加大校園隆重登場！這個號稱為美國最大的書展每年都吸引超過萬名民眾參與，沒有年紀或地區限制，活動將有超過三百個書商攤位展出，書展中不但有書籍特賣、新書發表、還邀請上百位人氣暢銷書作者與書迷互動，分享作品內容和概念及現場簽名。

Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival  (4/13-14)(LA)

The Egg House Pop-up Art Installation (3/20～4/22)(LA)

Butterfly Pavilion (3/17～9/2)(LA)

今年潮濕的暖冬引來了南加數億隻的蝴蝶遷徙，而在洛杉磯的自然歷史博物館也將有彩蝶翩翩飛舞喔！這個長達半年的蝴蝶展位於博物館南側，裡頭將展示20多種加州本地蝴蝶如queen butterfly、mourning cloak和 buckeye，以及10多種來自佛州南部和德州的亞熱帶品種蝴蝶如 the malachite 和the grey cracker，這裡會有專人解說蝴蝶的生活習性，如如何用管狀口器獲取花蜜、毛毛蟲變成蝴蝶的過程、喜歡停留在哪些植物等等，相信每次參觀蝴蝶館都可以獲得不同的體驗喔～！

Shark Lagoon Nights (2/22～5/17)(LA)

洛杉磯長灘市著名的太平洋水族館(Aquarium of the Pacific ) 從今年2月至5月的周五晚上，都會舉辦免費的教育活動「鯊魚礁湖之夜Shark Lagoon Nights」，拉近孩子們與海底的終極捕食者的距離。訪客們除了有機會認識不同種類的鯊魚、還可以���手觸摸竹鯊魚和魟魚喔！

若您家裡有個喜歡畫畫、又喜歡海洋生物的小朋友的話，可別錯過這週六開始在橙縣Dana Wharf 的野外藝術課程！一位知名海洋環境保護專家暨藝術家Robert Wyland 特別針對3到12歲兒童設計了此項結合藝術和戶外賞鯨的課程。藝術課程每週六於上午9點在Dana Pride的寬敞的沙龍內進行，每週僅限20名兒童；然後從10點到12點會進行2小時的賞鯨之旅，不只講解生態也教孩子們如何用眼觀察、用畫筆畫下來。最後這些畫還會進入比賽，優勝作品除了有機會獲得Wyland 提名、表框外，還有機會獲得價值2000美元的獎品喔。整個活動希望鼓勵人們以全新的方式看待奧蘭治縣沿岸的海洋生物，並將下一代引入這個美麗的生態系統。

This year, events are happening at Auburn Hills. The 21st Annual Fall Festival in the woods is happening on October 13 at Hawk Woods Nature Center. It’s perfect for those who have kids as they have hands on activities. People can take a hayride, participate in pumpkin carving, drink free cider, or just enjoy live music. It’s only $2 per person. Those who want to carve pumpkins will need to shell out $4 to $12 depending on the size. It runs from 11 am to 3 pm. The 13th Annual Spooktacular happens on October 27 at Downtown Auburn Hills. Merchants will be handing out candies and goodies. Every child must be accompanied by an adult. It’s an absolutely free event that everyone should be a part of. It runs from 9 am to 12 pm. The 25th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony happens on the 30th of November at Downtown Auburn Hills. It starts at 6 pm. It’s perfect for families as Santa Claus and his wife is going to make an appearance. The Mayor will also light up the Christmas tree. Have your photos taken with Santa, eat s’mores, or engage in holiday crafts.

Riverside Park is located on the banks of the Clinton River. It has a river path, a play structure with swings for kids, and a covered picnic shelter. One can also launch a canoe or a kayak on the river from it. During season, the covered picnic shelter, barbecue grills and picnic tables can be rented. A heated restroom is available all year long. A $1 million project is also opening to the public next summer. After 10 years, the new amphitheater has a seating for 300 and lawn seating for 200. It’s a 950 square foot of stage and dance floor that anyone is bound to enjoy. They have also constructed a splash pad and a play area.

Riverside Hayride by Solstice Sccents

Here’s another Solstice Scents review for you. 

This is Riverside Hayride from the Foxcoft’s Autumn Festival collection. Its description is: 

Moist dirt, white carnations, fallen leaves, bare branches, hay, & a hint of pressed apples carried on the breeze from Corvin's Apple Orchard.

In the bottle: A bit more floral than the others in this collection, with something of a decaying leaf smell. Underneath all of that is apples.

Wet: I get hay and grass. Something spicy and actually, some smoke. The grass and hay are fairly damp, like it's early morning and the dew has  matted it down. There are fallen apples all over.

Drydown: This becomes slightly less sweet. I smell hay and grass still. Leaves. No carnations really--I suppose I was getting the carnation early on while wet. After a while, about 20 minutes, it's not as sweet and I definitely smell like autumn hay. The apple smell has become amped so that the hay and apple come together in a lovely way.

Sillage and Longevity: At first this plays pretty close to the skin but as it develops during drydown, it seems to float further out. I can smell it on myself. It seems to be just as strong as it was when I put it on, so I'm guessing my skin doesn't soak this up as much as Solstice Scents' other fragrances so far. I can actually still smell this one faintly on me about four hours later. That's pretty long for Solstice Scents for me.

Verdict: I like this one a lot. I will have to think about whether I want a full size. But this is a very nice scent with some decent longevity on me. Definitely an autumn scent.

1. Whispering Pines Camping Estates

Just twenty minutes from Ricketts Glen State Park and Red Rock Mountain, Whispering Pines Camping Estates is a cozy, family-friendly campground with a community feel. Nestled in a part of Pennsylvania that is still rich in old-growth forests, over twenty waterfalls, and even a rare eastern fire tower, this is an important, untouched habitat for birds and a variety of animals and is part of the official Audubon Susquehanna River Birding and Wildlife Trail.

Whispering Pines balances all that rich wilderness with small town charm. They offer not only cozy, pet-frinedly rentals and cabins, but also “paint and sip” parties, a pool, hayrides, bingo, meteor shower viewings, and more. Nearby are other activities that even indoorsy visitors will enjoy, like regional vineyards and golf courses.

2. French Creek State Park

French Creek State Park is the largest block of contiguous forest between Washington DC and New York City. The forests, lakes, and wetlands of the 7,730-acre park draw urbanites looking to spend some time in nature and provide a great reprieve for all Pennsylvanians. The park is home to plants and animals that are rare in the southeast part of the state. The National Audubon Society has named the park an Important Bird Area and the Pennsylvania Game Commission has named it an Important Mammal Area.

This is one of the few spots for camping in PA that offers nearby urban access, located just under an hour from Philadelphia. Despite the close proximity to the city, this park offers a large campground and great access to hiking, fishing, and biking. The campground has 16 full-hookup sites, 42 modern electric sites, 141 modern non-electric sites, and 17 rustic organized group tenting sites.

The campground also has three camping cottages, 10 modern cabins and two yurts available to rent. While camping is only available year-round at 47 of these campsites, the spots never fill up in the off-season, and cottages, cabins, and yurts are available year-round. Kids love the on-site campground playground. Showers, flush toilets and a sanitation dump station are also on-site.

3. Riverside Campground

Located on the shores of one of PA’s most important rivers, Riverside Campground is a privately owned campground open year-round. Nestled on the edge of the Susquehanna River, the campground has 135 sites great for campers, RVs, or tents and also offers rustic tent camping sites near a stream.

Cable TV and WiFi are provided at all campsites. The campground has a Laundromat and on-site lounge that serves up adult beverages and delicious grilled food. Warm showers and flush toilets are also available year-round.

The campground is just a short walk to local shops and there’s a large community park located just next door that kids will love. The park has children’s playgrounds, a skate park, soccer fields and a large pavilion. This camping option features something not common for most camping in PA; a pool, that is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

4. The Loose Caboose Campground

Offering 70 year-round campsites for tent and RV campers, The Loose Caboose Campground sits on 26-acres in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Amish Country. The campground offers large, wooded, and secluded sites.

Most of the campsites at The Loose Caboose are full-hookup and can accommodate any size RVs. The heated bathhouse offers free hot showers and flush toilets. Amenities include a children’s playground, gift shop, group fire ring, dumping station and free wireless internet.

Being in Amish country, this campground is nearby unlikely but inviting tourist attractions, including the Railroad Museum of PA and Toy Train Museum, both just 8 miles away. If you’re looking to hit the rides (or just eat chocolate), Hershey Park is less than 45 miles away. Major cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, Gettysburg and Washington DC are all within about 100 miles.

5. Raccoon Creek State Park

Built as a public works project by the National Park Service in the 1930’s, the 7,572 acre Raccoon Creek State Park is one of the largest and most popular year round spots for camping in PA. Located just a half hour from Pittsburg, it’s a great place to steal away from the big city and immerse oneself in nature.

Campers love strolling through the park’s wildflower reserve, which boasts over 700 species of plants, hiking on the 42 acres of trails and kayaking on the 100-acre Raccoon Lake.

The campground at Raccoon Creek State Park has 64 modern electric campsites, 81 modern non-electric campsites, 26 tent-only sites, 4 rustic non-electric sites, 6 rustic organized group camping sites, as well as 11 modern cabins and 3 organized group cabin camping sites.

The 172 modern tent and trailer campsites have access to flush toilets, warm showers and the option of electricity. While much of the campground is only open seasonally, the rustic sites are available year-round. Water and pit latrines are also available at the year-round sites.

6. Penn Avon Campground

Conveniently located just two miles from the charming downtown Selinsgrove, PA, Penn Avon Campground is a year-round campground offering sites with full hookups, cable TV and free Wi-Fi. The campground also has shower houses and a dump station ($10). Kids will enjoy the on-site playground and recreational field. This campground is great for those that want to stick around for a while, offering weekly, monthly and seasonal rates to campers.

Located close to the Penn Avon Campground is the Raymond B. Winter State Park, which is open for camping mid-April through mid-December. Even though the campground may not be open year-round, the park certainly is, and there’s no shortage of things to do there. Halfway Lake, the park’s main attraction, is a popular place to fish and swim during the warm months of the year. In the winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing draw visitors to the park.

7. Bald Eagle State Forest

Not to be confused with the nearby Bald Eagle State Park, the Bald Eagle State Forest, named for the famous Native American Chief, is one of the best sports public camping in PA open year-round. The park offers primitive backcountry camping, group camping and 45 car camping spots with fire rings and picnic tables. Car camping spots can be reserved up to 90 days in advance by requesting a permit from the Bald Eagle State Forest district office.

Group campsites require a letter of authorization from the District Forester, which take between 2-3 weeks to process. Primitive backcountry campsites do not require a permit as long as the camper stays only one night in each campsite. If you’d like to have a campfire at a backcountry campsite during the spring wildfire season, a permit is required.

When not spending time at the campsite, there are a variety of things to do on the 193,000 acres of forest. Hikers will enjoy the “rugged and demanding” 189-mile Mid State Trail. Mountain bikers are not allowed on the Mid State Trail, but are allowed on nearly every other trail in the state forest.

The forest also has one designated ATV trail, and two designated motorcycle trails. Hunting, fishing and horse riding opportunities also abound in the forest—there’s even a few equestrian campgrounds spread across the forest if you’re looking to make your next ride into a camping trip.

8. White’s Haven Campground and Cabins

Settled on the edge of western Pennsylvania’s Cook Forest State Park, White’s Haven offers year-round wooded campsites for tents and RVs as well as cabin rentals. Cabins are primitive and have no water or bathroom, though cabin campers have access to the bathhouse.

Tent sites are also primitive and RV sites have both water and electric hook-ups. The campground has a dump station for use by RV campers. Amenities include a playground, volleyball court and a fishing pond.

Like much of year-round camping in PA, White’s Haven Campground is in close proximity to public lands for outdoors adventures any time of year. Cook Forest State Park is just a short drive away, and offers year-round outdoor recreation opportunities. The Clarion River flows through the park and is a popular place to canoe, kayak and tube in the summer months, and fish in the offseason.

The park’s Forest Cathedral, a stand of old growth pine and hemlock trees, is a National Natural Landmark and worth a visit in all seasons. The park also has 47 miles of hiking trails and 4.3 miles of multi-use trails for biking, trail running and horseback riding.

9. Shady Rest Campground

Located on 16 acres in the heart of the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, Shady Rest Campground offers RV and tent camping sites for travelers just passing through and vacationers looking to set up a home base close to the Elk Mountain Ski Resort. The campground has 35 sites with water, sewer, electric and cable television. The campground also has a dump station, Wi-Fi, laundry service and showers. Primitive camping is available along Tunkhannock Creek, which also makes a great place for swimming in the summertime.

Points of interest close to Shady Rest campground include Old Mill Village, an exhibit of buildings that feature the region’s history, the Steamtown National Historic Site, which features the history of steam locomotives and the Elk Mountain Ski Resort, which has some of the state’s best skiing on 27 trails over 180 acres.

The Egg House Pop-up Art Installation (3/20～4/22)(LA)

在紐約和上海爆紅的「蛋蛋屋」( Egg House’s )要來到南加洛杉磯囉！這是一個雞蛋為主題創作、佔地一萬兩千平方英呎的快閃式藝術裝置展覽。在Instagram最近廣為流傳的是可愛、有趣到不行的「蛋蛋屋」( Egg House’s )！全部都是與蛋蛋有關的東西，你能想像有你半個身身高的巨型的雞蛋模型嗎？坐在巨型蛋盒的感覺？還有環抱在蛋蛋的球屋，可愛蛋造型的盪鞦韆、旋轉椅，甚至是棒棒糖、扭蛋裡的糖果全都是可愛的蛋造型，只能說一定要自己親自來一趟體驗這些沉浸式裝置和互動體驗的房間，包準你興奮指數爆表啦！！這次將設置5個小型小吃站，以及15個以洛杉磯當地地標為主題場景的布置，包括聖莫尼卡碼頭( Santa Monica Pier)的海灘場景、粉紅色和藍色的籃球聖地 Staples Center都在展覽館中現身 。有興趣的民眾建議趕快上官網買票喔，在紐約展出的三個月就有60000人次的訪問，某些周末還超過1000人次呢，相當受歡迎！

深受小小孩喜愛的橙縣Discovery Cube Bubblefest又來喔！每年這個泡泡秀都會吸引許多學齡兒童來參加，除了可以知道泡泡的一些科學知識，如泡泡怎麼產生、泡泡表面張力和彈性可以有多大、泡泡的氣壓、分子和幾何特性等，還可以和各式各樣的泡泡互動。會場有泡泡實驗室、泡泡產品、泡泡巨型氣球、吹泡泡體驗等，還有一天四場由華裔國際泡沫大師Deni Yang與Melody Yang結合燈光舞台效果所進行的超現實泡沫秀，Deni Yang可是金氏紀錄最大泡泡的保持者，直徑170英呎能裝下150人喔！另外，特別的是今年還將第一次舉行家庭日(須另外買票)，為不到500人提供獨家泡泡大秀。趕緊帶著孩子進入魔幻的泡泡世界、找回吹泡泡的單純樂趣吧！

Irvine Park Railroad Easter Eggstravaganza (3/30～4/29)(OC)

Butterfly Pavilion (3/17～9/2)(LA)

今年潮濕的暖冬引來了南加數億隻的蝴蝶遷徙，而在洛杉磯的自然歷史博物館也將有彩蝶翩翩飛舞喔！這個長達半年的蝴蝶展位於博物館南側，裡頭將展示20多種加州本地蝴蝶如queen butterfly、mourning cloak和 buckeye，以及10多種來自佛州南部和德州的亞熱帶品種蝴蝶如 the malachite 和the grey cracker，這裡會有專人解說蝴蝶的生活習性，如如何用管狀口器獲取花蜜、毛毛蟲變成蝴蝶的過程、喜歡停留在哪些植物等等，相信每次參觀蝴蝶館都可以獲得不同的體驗喔～！

Shark Lagoon Nights (2/22～5/17)(LA)

洛杉磯長灘市著名的太平洋水族館(Aquarium of the Pacific ) 從今年2月至5月的周五晚上，都會舉辦免費的教育活動「鯊魚礁湖之夜Shark Lagoon Nights」，拉近孩子們與海底的終極捕食者的距離。訪客們除了有機會認識不同種類的鯊魚、還可以用手觸摸竹鯊魚和魟魚喔！

免費的鯊魚瀉湖之夜是否舉辦完全視天氣而定，可在惡劣天氣下取消，活動舉辦日當天水族館皆會開放到晚間九點，園內也有簡便快餐可供購買。本季開放時間尚包括: 3/8、3/15、4/5、4/19、4/26、5/3、5/10 以及 5/17。

Art lessons in the wild contest (1/26～4/27)(OC)

若您家裡有個喜歡畫畫、又喜歡海洋生物的小朋友的話，可別錯過這週六開始在橙縣Dana Wharf 的野外藝術課程！一位知名海洋環境保護專家暨藝術家Robert Wyland 特別針對3到12歲兒童設計了此項結合藝術和戶外賞鯨的課程。藝術課程每週六於上午9點在Dana Pride的寬敞的沙龍內進行，每週僅限20名兒童；然後從10點到12點會進行2小時的賞鯨之旅，不只講解生態也教孩子們如何用眼觀察、用畫筆畫下來。最後這些畫還會進入比賽，優勝作品除了有機會獲得Wyland 提名、表框外，還有機會獲得價值2000美元的獎品喔。整個活動希望鼓勵人們以全新的方式看待奧蘭治縣沿岸的海洋生物，並將下一代引入這個美麗的生態系統。

Art of the Jewel: Crevoshay Collection (now～5/12)

洛城的自然歷史博物館開始有長達半年的新展出囉！這是由號稱為「色彩女王 (Queen of Color)」Paula Crevoshay大師的傑作，讓民眾可以看到從平凡無奇的石頭變成奢華的寶石的過程。 這次將展出超過50件奢華的珠寶 ，包括耳環、手鐲、胸針等，包括從加州碧璽(California tourmaline)、蒙大拿藍寶石、月長石、珍珠和黑鑽等製成。而也因為Crevoshay對藝術、科學和自然世界的熱愛，珠寶採用植物、動物和昆蟲的形式，包括蘭花、蝴蝶、蜘蛛等。有興趣的民眾不妨帶著孩子們，一起去探索礦物的美妙、了解寶石的特徵，以及如何將它們轉化為優雅珠寶的藝術喔！

Hermosa Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade (3/17)(LA)

St. Patrick’s Day正巧就在這週末 , 在洛杉磯的何爾摩沙海灘(Hermonsa Beach)就將舉行一場全市規模的 St. Patrick’s Day Parade ，這是由Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce主辦，每年春天都會替Hermonsa Beach這個小鎮帶來一絲愛爾蘭風情。今年有高達95個在地的表演單位參加遊行，包括學校行軍樂隊、風笛手、花車、骨董車、當地舞者等，歡迎大家去這個海邊小鎮感受一下被滿滿的小綠人包圍的感覺～

Descanso Gardens Cherry Blossom Festival (3/1-31)(LA)

Rainforest Adventure (1/20-9/9)(OC)

橙縣 Santa Ana 的 Discovery Cube 又有新展覽囉！！這次的雨林探險主題展除了介紹地球上的主要熱帶雨林區、裡頭常見的動植物、該地居民所面臨的挑戰以及我們能提供怎樣的援助等等。裡頭有超過40個互動組件、2個專門設計的電腦學習遊戲，還有大量的探險道具喔，小朋友們穿上背心、手電筒、望遠鏡等、扮演生態研究員進入雨林中完成各項任務，任務如攀爬9英呎左右的木棉樹、低身鑽過空心樹洞、建立昆蟲標本、探索大猩猩的家、分辨哪些是瀕臨絕種的物種等等，讓孩子們透過遊戲探索的方式認識雨林種種概念。展覽時間將一直展到九月初，聖地牙哥的媽媽朋友們記得找時間上Cube去好好探索一下喔！

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch(3/1-5/14)

從3/1起Carlsbad Ranch著名的花海正式對外開放。每天從上午9點到下午6點，遊客們可以在這片絢麗的花海中感受與自然的親近。這片花田有將近50畝，每年有6至8周的花期，無論是玫瑰、蘭花、豌豆花還是牽牛花等等，這裡都有它們靚麗的身影。

Trek with the Trackers(4/1)

本周六Mission Trails Regional Park 的Tracking Team 將會舉行一次有趣的冒險活動，參與者可以在導遊的帶領下Oak Grove Loop Trail.，在Oak Grove Loop Trail裡尋找小動物留下的腳印和其它蛛絲馬跡，並根據它們進行追蹤。記得穿長褲哦~活動免費。

Latin American Art Festival (4/1-2)
