She smiles, looking across the park to where Isobel plays with Mary, Ned's youngest. There's a bit of an age gap between the two girls, but Bel idolises Mary. She follows her around, awestruck and adoring, and it makes Rita's heart swell every time the older girl takes her daughter's hand to make sure she can keep up with her, or takes the time to make sure she understands the game they're playing with her older brothers.
There's a lot of her dad in Mary Ryerson, in the best way. She's patient and affable, with a seemingly indefatigable positivity that even Rita, who is easily the most positive person in her family, finds impressive. She's as grateful for the friendship Mary has struck up with Isobel as she is for her own friendship with Ned.
"You're lucky you're not saying that where Pittsburgh's favourite weatherman can hear you, you'd just get a rant about climate change." She laughs, her affection for her husband clear even as she makes a joke at his expense. "But, me too. It feels like I blinked and summer passed me by."
Tumblr media
"Y'know something weird? It still feels strange to be here when it isn't covered in snow." She gestures towards the grass to emphasise her point, almost laughing at herself. "I guess that just speaks to how strong a first impression Punxsutawney made on me back then."

okay I find finished watching Groundhog Day the movie, after having seen the musical before, and here are the things I find that the musical did better:
− Rita. Just… Rita Hanson. She's so much more fleshed out in the musical she's barely the same character. She has a backstory, a past, she's driven, compassionate, awkward, filled with innocent wonderment but jaded at the same time, she's not bland AT ALL.
− Diversity. There's more women and people of color in the musical, starting with the female lead who is both. It's still pretty white but it's heading towards a more equal direction. The female characters are treated better too, given more time and made more interesting with special quirks.
− Fleshing out the town characters. There's a few added ones to his normal day if he lets it run normally, there's the songs "One Day" and "Playing Nancy" that really play up this aspect. Their humanity is really made much more clear, how each of them are special and unique.
− Some scenes are given much more emotional depth with the music going with it, I think specifically "Hope". Damn, Andy Karl, how do you do this? And "Everything about you" feels more intimate and special.
− They took like ONE LINE from bland movie!Rita "I wish I had a thousand lifetimes" and they make this GORGEOUS uplifting song "If I had my time again" which is so funny and deep and layered and overall perfect!!! I still can't believe that!!!! Like oh my god. And that day they spent together is also filled with purely platonic interactions and I really love that. The movie version was much more romantic.
− They removed Phil's rape-y scene with Rita so there's that.
− Overall, I find that all characters have more depth to them and are more likable and interesting and quirky. I find that the scenes have a better pace to them, the dialogue (although A LOT is from the movie itself) is more witty, the added scenes are all to a point and give meaning to the story.
− And of course, the songs add a cohesive atmosphere to the musical, the costumes are more quirky and funny.
Sometimes, less is more. I find that the limitations of musical theater staging usually bring about such creativity to go beyond those limitations that the final product is much more creative than the original. I feel that way about most stage adaptations and I wasn't surprised to see this confirmed with Groundhog Day.

👫 4 rocky & emmett !!
❄ meme :: send a 👫and I’ll write four headcanons I have about our muses’ relationship :: accepting! ❄
Tumblr media
OUT OF STICKY BUNS  ::  (Just as a reminder to everyone, I’m doing these both for muses Rita interacts with on here and canon characters from Groundhog Day!)
This has taken me ages to get to because I’m useless but literally this ask made me so happy because these two relationships are just so important to Rita (and to me!). One of my favourite things about taking Rita over to Twitter is the fact that these friendships have predominantly grown out of that (and it’s always a treat to have the opportunity to write with Ray!). Rita loves them both so much. This is long because I have a lot of feelings, so it’s all under a read more!
     ROCKY
One  ::  At first glance, you probably couldn’t pick two more unlikely friends than Rocky and Rita, but you’d actually be pretty hard pressed to find two people who’re better suited to being good friends with one another - both when it comes to their personalities, and their general outlooks. They’re both instinctively kind people, which can sometimes feel like such a rarity in the world that it would be harder for them not to have gravitated towards one another. As such, their friendship becomes very close very quickly; they get each other, their similarities overriding their differences, and that’s important to them both. To be honest, their friendship is one of those rare, as-close-as-siblings ones, and Rita values that so highly. They tease each other, and they’re vulnerable with each other to a not insignificant degree. His friendship is one of the most important things in Rita’s life (and he’s the only person who gets away with calling her by a nickname, so take that however you will!).
Two  ::  Stemming from the above, they can ride each other pretty hard about the silly, borderline self-destructive things they can both be prone to doing. When she’s overworking herself or when she’s beating herself up over something, Rocky is always one of the first people to call her out for being hard on herself. Similarly, when Rocky evidently isn’t looking after himself and when he’s being particularly down on himself, Rita is always quick to scold him for the former and, when it comes to the latter, gently reiterate quite how highly she thinks of him; he’s one of the best people she knows - that isn’t hyperbole, that’s the truth, and she’ll keep saying it even if he doesn’t believe her. They can’t fix each other’s problems, but they can remind each other that there’s always someone in their corner with their best interests at heart.
Three  ::  She makes good on her promise (although let’s be honest, he probably sees it more as a threat!) of sending him what is essentially a first aid care package - more than once, because Mom Friend Rita Hanson is 100% a thing. She finds out the most common boxing injuries to figure out the most useful stuff to send (and double checks with her mother, who is a nurse). Cue Rocky getting a box full of various sizes of band aids, bandages and dressings, along with hand wraps, medical tape, steri strips, reusable heat and ice packs, antiseptic, and two kinds of painkillers. His argument of ‘it’s my job, I can handle it’ is one she acknowledges, but she also argues that ‘handling it’ doesn’t mean he shouldn’t try and look after himself as best he can - and anyway, she loves him, so she’s allowed to fuss.
Four  ::  Channel 5 decides to send a team to Philadelphia cover Rocky’s fight with Creed, and Rita - for all her distaste for the majority of their sports reporters, her general lack of interest in or knowledge of pretty much any sport you could name, and the fact that the thought of watching a boxing match (especially one involving her friend) makes her feel somewhat uneasy - shouts down literally every other producer in the building until she’s the one going. It’s hard for her to watch, of course. She knows this is what he does, but that doesn’t change the fact she’s watching one of the people she cares about most get hurt. Her heart is in her throat the entire time. But in the end? After fifteen rounds, when he’s bruised and bleeding, and she watches Adrian run to him? You’ve never seen anyone prouder of - or more relieved for - their friend than Rita is in that moment.
     EMMETT
One  ::  These two are literally as bad as each other in so many respects. Coffee addictions, terrible sleeping patterns, a penchant for overworking to the point of utter stupidity - and drive stemming from an ability to take what life has thrown at them and using whatever that is to get to where they want to be in life, even if their confidence in themselves can take a few knocks here and there. They’re pretty good at picking up on when the other is pushing themselves a little too hard, and they’ve developed a very particular knack for being unfailingly positive for one another (even when they’re not feeling too positive about their own situations). They’re very supportive of one another, and it’s so important to Rita that he knows how highly she values their friendship - as with Rocky, it’s definitely one of the most important ones in her life.
Two  ::  Emmett can be really, really hard on himself - not always in very obvious ways, but there comes a time when Rita knows him well enough that she can tell he’s trying to hide that fact. She knows there’s not a lot she can do to change that, but she always makes a point to try and remind him to look at where he started. He’s achieved so much, and it’s all through his own drive and determination and hard work - he should be proud of himself and honestly, she thinks it’s a crying shame that he can’t always recognise that fact. She’s always proud of him, though - and she’ll tell him as much, when she really thinks he needs a reminder that there are people in his life who recognise his achievements (both professional and personal) for what they are, even when he can’t.
Three  ::  A big thing that these two have in common is being pretty fussy about their coffee - they both drink enough of it that there’s sometimes concern they’re gonna be pumping it around their body instead of blood, so it makes sense that if they’re gonna do that they’re at least not drinking their own weight in cheap instant coffee out of a machine. When she’s living in Boston temporarily, Rita brings bags of coffee from her favourite Pittsburgh-based company - she’s that person. A bag somehow ends up going home with Emmett at some point, and pretty soon after Rita goes back home to Pittsburgh a delivery arrives at Emmett’s place - six bags of coffee, because Rita is an enabler.
Four  ::  Regardless of the timeline - whether it’s the one here on Tumblr when she meets Emmett when she’s working at the station in Boston, or the one on Twitter where they already know each other when that happens - Emmett plays a big part in Rita actually enjoying her time there. She’s been to Boston before; Daniel (her ex-fiancé) studied at Harvard, and she visited him there a handful of times. So she’s at least still vaguely familiar with both the city of Boston itself and the Harvard Law campus in Cambridge, but those memories are all tied in with the one person who has hurt her more than anyone else and as such, she’s apprehensive about going back there; she’s moved on from what happened, but the last thing she wants to do is reopen those wounds. Being friends with Emmett, and spending time with him in a city that he knows so well, gives her new places and new memories in the places she already knows - she’s not sure she’ll ever be able to explain how grateful she is to him for giving her something other than her ex to think about when she thinks of time spent in Boston.

20, 24 and 31 :)
20. What book, movie, or TV show do you think should be made into a musical?
So the last heard of the Fight Club “rock opera” project with David Fincher, Julie Taymor, and Trent Reznor was from 2015, which wasn’t all that long ago and gives me the impression that it is still in the works and going to eventually happen. I know it sounds super niche and out there and will probably have trouble finding an audience, but I just absolutely have to hear it for myself.
Also I’d be down for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on stage.
(24 answered here)
31. Dream cast your favorite musical.
Oooh this is a fun one. I still have my heart set on Groundhog Day with Glenn Howerton as Phil Connors, Rosario Dawson as Rita Hanson, and Gabrielle Ruiz as Nancy Taylor. I don’t know how well all those castings would interact with each other, but I am quite fond of them.

The airport is, of course, full of people - tourists trying to find where to hail a cab, frustrated business travellers fighting their way past reuniting family members to get to the drivers that are waiting for them, holding pieces of paper with their names on.
Rita leans against a barrier in the arrivals hall, fingers drumming against it as she scans the faces of another steady stream of passengers coming through from baggage reclaim.
She’s so used to life on tour now that it feels strange to have had a couple of hours to herself today - even if some of that was spent stuck in traffic on the way here. It was handy, anyway; she’d used the time to get some last bits of work done, so day is now clear until she has to wrangle local press before the show.
As soon as she spots Eloise come into view, she’s beaming. Weaving her way around a couple of people, she walks to meet her and pulls her, immediately, into a hug.

“It is so good to see you! How was your flight?” Even as she lets them go, she’s reaching to take some of their luggage from them. “I hope you at least managed to get some sleep!”

((ooc)) top 5 GHD characters?
❄ meme :: put “top 5” anything in my ask and i will answer ok go :: accepting! ❄
Tumblr media
{ This was weirdly difficult once I got past the first two characters, so thank you to @philconnors for letting me annoy her with my reasoning before I finalised this one xD Also, not spoiler free, so if you’re avoiding them before you see the show please be cautious! }
{ I might have cheated. I’m not sorry.
Phil Connors & Rita Hanson  ::  Joint first place, obviously. This can’t be a surprise, right? I was initially going to put Phil in first place and Rita in second, but that really didn’t feel right. I love them both equally, both for overlapping and entirely different reasons.
Phil is exactly the sort of character I tend to like (I’m a sucker for any variation on the ‘jerk with a heart of gold’ trope, what can I say?), and it’s a testament to Andy’s performance that I rooted for him as much as I did the first time I saw the musical (as I think I’ve mentioned before, not a huge fan of the film (despite being a Bill Murray fan)). The transition he undergoes during the musical is incredibly moving, and I struggle to recall a character I’ve wanted to see succeed as much as I do with Phil even now I’ve seen the show so many times!
And the fact I adore Rita this much is nothing short of astonishing when you consider how much I dislike the nothing of a character she is in the film. The musical’s Rita is such a well-rounded, interesting, funny, strong, vibrant, emotional, capable woman - she’s a joy to watch, and a joy to write. She’s not just a cut-out ‘perfect woman’ for Phil to win at the end of the story; we learn so much about her, and the fact that they end up together is her choice, based on the man he’s evolved into - the man she’s got to know on that last iteration of Groundhog Day. That’s really important to me.
Fred Kleiser & Debbie Johnson  ::  Joint second place, because how on earth could I split these two up? Honestly, I ship Frebbie as hard as I ship Phita xD I think they’re a really sweet ‘beta couple’, and their interactions are the perfect balance of sweet and really funny. They’re even better in the Broadway version - Debbie’s a little… Softer now (the ‘doorknob to my heart’ line used to just be her smacking him in the chest and going ‘it’s perfect’ and I think that works a lot better?) - still a woman who knows what she wants out of her relationship, though! But I love the fact that even though they’re very minor characters you get a good insight into the dynamic of their relationship. Also, in the diner scene before Everything About You, their track as Phil is running out of the diner and the scene is changing is absolutely hilarious: if you’re on the front row you can hear Freddie just saying something like ‘Oh, I’m Debbie, and I love my sister’s ring more than anything!’ with his hand stuck out in front of him like he’s examining an engagement ring, while she’s shouting ‘Do you really think I’m that shallow?!’. It was just a really hilarious little moment to notice.
Ned Ryerson & Nancy Taylor  ::  I told you I was cheating! But I can’t choose between these two, either. I really love how the musical takes two characters who just exists as stereotypes in the film, and makes them into much more rounded characters. I’m in the camp of people who find the film’s Ned irritating rather than funny, but in the musical I’m always genuinely moved by the reveal in the second act. Both Andrew Langtree and John Sanders play him incredibly well - there’s a nice balance between the pushy, enthusiastic, overly friendly insurance salesman we meet at the beginning, and the grieving, widowed father we learn he is in act two. And (while I think a little more could’ve been done) I love the way Nancy gets developed too. We all know the stereotype she’s meant to be, and getting to see her beyond her ‘role’ as Phil’s one night stand is important. I also really love the little moment between her and Larry during Seeing You. Georgia Hagen and Rebecca Faulkenberry both play Nancy with a lot of warmth - there’s sweet moment during Punxsutawney Rock where Nancy is teaching Mrs Lancaster how to dance like her, which I always love.
Doris  ::  I rooted for Doris so hard at the end of Philanthropy the first time I saw the show than it kind of cemented her place in my heart. Whether she’s being played by Emma Lindars at the Old Vic or Rheaume Crenshaw on Broadway, it pays to keep an eye on Doris whenever there’s a diner scene going on - the facial expressions that get pulled (especially during the diner scene where Phil is in the fur coat) are stellar, and some interactions with Jeff in the back of scenes can be really sweet. I also adore Rheaume’s headcanon that she owns the diner.
Jeff  ::  He could be on the list for ‘Jeepers, Debbie!’ alone tbh. But (while Phil outing him to his dad is problematic, and I do get why some people don’t like it), I think his story is quite sweet. He goes from being closeted to openly dancing with his father’s Deputy at banquet, and it might be a small and not entirely perfectly done story, it’s one of my favourite little parts of the show. And also, as with Doris, it’s worth keeping an eye on him when he’s in the back of a scene - especially when he’s cleaning cutlery behind the counter during the fur coat scene.
Honourable Mentions  ::  Larry, Buster, Mrs Lancaster, Chubby Man / Jonathan, the Sheriff & the Deputy, and Gus & Ralph.
