Shu is a nineteen-year-old-looking Japanese vampire who's a third year high school student at Ryoutei Academy. He's also the first son of the Sakamaki household. This makes Shu the current master of the mansion. He and his younger brother are the sons of Beatrix, the second wife of Karlheinz, the Vampire King. As a child, Shu was quite lively. However, he was always pushed by his mother to become the heir. As such, Shu was deprived of a childhood and began lacking interest in life. Later, when his only childhood friend was killed in a fire, he also came to shut out the world and developed pyrophobia. Now, Shu is apathetic and incredibly lazy to the point of doing almost nothing. Despite being the eldest, he doesn't take any responsibility to look after his five brothers or the house. Instead, Shu mostly complains about how he has to "deal with their problems" only to push these jobs onto his younger brother. Being bored with life, he lacks motivation and is usually found sleeping in the living room or the school's music room. Shu skips classes often and has been held back once as a senior. According to other students, he's the owner of the music room. This is because Shu loves nothing but music. He's always listening to music, even when taking a bath. Shu always has an MP3 player attached to a wire, which is wrapped around his neck and earphones in his ears. Specifically, he loves classical music, ranging from piano to violin. Shu's favorite hobby is playing the violin. His favorite food is rare steak. Beyond this, Shu is somewhat of a pervert. He teases "Eve" about wearing unattractive panties and bras after she becomes too pushy with him to do something for himself while seeking his attention.

Shuu's other name: Ririe

I may be very late on this topic. But, oh well..

Alright. Somebody enlighten me on this.

Why and how did Rejet come up with this idea of giving Shuu a second name which is actually a flower? And I don't get how swapping the "i" in the Japanse spelling fort he flower lily, (Ririi)with an "E" makes it cool. Rejet could've at least done some research on cool/ aesthetic sounding names.

You know what else I want to know?

Why Shū changed his name and almost everything about his previous self.

It’s canon that his real, legal (maybe not anymore after a few document alterations), actual name is Ririe. It’s in the Official Fandom Wiki, and noted within the games but never is an explanation for why or how stated. One of the many plot holes that Rejet is unfortunately known for but an interesting point of discussion.

Adding on— obviously what had happened with Edgar (Yūma), Reiji’s betrayal (potentially?), and the overall pressure and stress added for him to be groomed for his rightful seating on the throne as the next king are reasons, but to change your name and identity seems a bit extreme.

But also.. not?

Let me elaborate, and this may be a stretch (or not, you stars be the judge,) but what if all of these pressures and reasons drove Shū to the point where he couldn’t resonate with the name ‘Ririe.’

As in it was too much, it had broken him so much to the point, in an attempt to salvage whatever was left of himself, he created a new identity (ergo Shū) to let it pass as if they were 2 different entities in itself.

We could even see it as a coping method for his obvious traumas, as there’s always more to what it seems, especially for Shū’s character and what it was like to be the first born.

Point is, he obviously had to grow resentment and face a breaking point to take such a drastic decision.

And to get everyone else to agree and follow suit?

That also gives us some sort of idea that due to their age (larger age gap when realizing that Shū and Reiji are much much older than the others due to the vampire centuries business getting involved), the others might have been far too young, or not even born yet to know of a change.

As if it was simply, their normal.

Because realistically speaking, if someone like Ayato or Laito knew, they would make it a point to put it into jabs at Shū whenever he had done something to piss them off, or just something to add in whenever they were in their fighting moods to pick at someone.

But of course, this is disregarding the fact that Shū holds major control over the brothers, household (seeing as he’s the current Master of the Mansion— owning it and all. With his control over who can get evicted, whatever the case may be,) and elder sibling rights.

Also how canonically the others do hold some degree of fear for Shū, and understand that if he wanted to, he would use his power to benefit himself solely.

Simple version is that Ririe and Shū are 2 different people, different entities, with their own different consciousnesses, thoughts, emotions, whatever the case may be.

Point is, 2 different people.

It makes sense, when seeing how lively Shū (Ririe) was at his child state, before years ago (most likely his teens, definitely after 15-16), before becoming the hollowed out, numb person we, the fandom, and all the characters in that universe, know him as.

We don’t exactly know the specifics of when it started to hit Shū as hard as it did. But most likely it’ll take one event, a breaking point, or most likely years of trauma to make him who he is currently known as.

But I’d just be repeating myself, as it seems to me after seeing some of the CD translations, game translations, and other Diabolik Lovers Media, there’s an obvious disconnect. Something that pieces everything together that makes sense as to why he had the need to dissociate from it all.

Shū clearly isn’t the same as he was anymore.

He isn’t Ririe. (Whoever he was anyways.)

But it feels as though there were remnants with his figure of speech, sometimes delayed motions, as if it was all just self-preservation in the end.

But, then again, who knows? After all, Rejet left us these plot holes that make it harder to connect the lore together. So I suppose it’s just a theory!!

Shuu and Reiji is one of those brotps that makes me sad. Idk if it's just me or the way I read the drama CD translations but goddamn imagine baby Reiji happily calling Shuu "Ririe" before all this monstrosity occurred 💀💀💀

▰ At first, he’d stay quiet, unsure of what’s to come. Once it happens… it happens.

▰ Realistically, Shū wouldn’t intervene. This isn’t his problem, nor his mother.

▰ However he will be taken aback that Ayato went to such an extreme.

▰ Especially since the two are the closest out of the brothers.

▰ He’d leave it to Reiji to clear it up. But if he felt as if he had the energy, he’d send a familiar to Laito’s room to give him some of those macarons he likes, or to simply check on him.

Reiji:

“You two, cease this at once! Not only is this highly inappropriate, but also distasteful to all who listens. Apologize, now.”

▰ As the normal voice of reason, even he’d be stunned.

▰ After all, what was he supposed to do? This wasn’t his dillema, nor his trauma.

▰ However, since he does have some sort of maternal instincts towards the brothers, he would be shocked they’d use each-other’s trauma to hurt one another.

▰ This feels like the one thing that was always off limits, so he’d put a stop to it before it escalated into something much larger.

▰ With his own personal experiences with Cordelia and her attraction towards him, he’d take a minute to think if that’s what Shū thought of him, seeing as it wasn’t his fault, and nor did he invite it.

Ayato:

“Y-you… You hit me! You’re just… Tch, whatever…”

▰ I’d assume that whatever the argument was, it had to be large enough to cause Ayato to snap back in such a way.

▰ It isn’t like his character to attack Laito on their shared past, but more so Laito’s trauma.

▰ Especially since he felt immensely guilty for not being able to do more for Laito, and in turn, help him.

Kanato:

“You two… You two can’t… This is not right…”

▰ Since Kanato also holds guilt for knowing what happened to Laito, but not saying anything to help him, like Ayato, he would be star struck here.

▰ As in, a loss for words.

▰ After all, even he wouldn’t go as far as to bring it up. Not when his guilt overrides it.

▰ Since they both are his blood siblings, he’d try his best to deescalate the situation. But with his own traumas and mental fragility, I don’t see him doing much to help.

▰ He’d bring Laito something to cool down, like sweets and treats he may like. But for Ayato he’d leave it at that and hope it all goes away.

Laito:

“You had no right… none at all… to say that! You don’t know anything. So just pretend to not see, just like last time.”

▰ He’s be hurt. Scratch that, upset.

▰ It’s like his entire facade cracked in an instant. The one he’d so carefully curated over the years to cope with what’s been done to him.

▰ And for Ayato, his closest brother, to make fun of it? That was like applying salt in the wound.

▰ He’d get incredibly defensive, and quick too. Think of his reaction in the Shū VS Laito CD, when Shū called him out on his persona and facade.

Subaru:

“I… What the fuck…?”

▰ Subaru would just be off to the corner and in shock.

▰ I mean, didn’t Cordelia affect all of them? So why would Ayato do that..?

▰ He wouldn’t intervene, he knows his place and wouldn’t get into something that doesn’t concern him, lest he becomes the new target.

▰ But since he does have a bit of morality, he’d feel bad for Laito, and perhaps disappointed that Ayato would entertain it.

▰ He wouldn’t do anything, but if he needed to, he would deescalate the situation by prying the two off each other. Maybe afterwards, he’d sneak a bouquet of white roses to Laito’s room. Just maybe.

Hello! Do you think that sakamaki brothers names (that we know) arent actually their real names? Like we already know as its been implied in many routes that the brothers arent japanese but from the demon world, and they came to japan waay later in life to settle there, so i have been wondering if their birth names are different , or maybe their last name isnt sakamaki? I always had a feeling their real names would be something much more european-like😅

Do you think anyone in the cast has a middle name? Bc I can totally picture Reiji (or Ruki maybe) yelling someone's full name from across the mansion bc he can Sense that there is fuckery afoot.

Ayato doing a stupid/potentially dangerous thing and hearing "Ayato Lewis Sakamaki!" from the other side of the mansion and just. Freezing bc you Know you're in trouble when someone calls you by your full name.

LOL well they use japanese names and they dont have middle names in japan, but a few of the mukamis could've had them. edgar was raised christian so I bet he had a christian one, and it's likely that ruki had one too. kou (or uh...emilio) has no memory of being named by his parents, so his mom definitely could've given him one, but he doesn't know it. the origin of azusa's name is a mystery to me so idk.

but the sakamakis do have "true" vampire names, like shu being ririe, so imagine their true names being treated like middle names!! then we could make it work!

I need answers

Ok so something that has been eating away at the back of my mind is about Papa Sakamaki. He has 3 names: Touga, Karlheinz and Reinhart......

I understand he uses the Sakamaki, Touga for mortal politics

I also understand that everyone seems to know him a Karlheinz esp. other vampires and demons.

What I don't understand is where 'Reinhart' comes from, like those of ya'll lucky to play the games can you tell me pls.

Like because I've now delulu'd myself into believing that his actual vamp/demon born name is Reinhart but he has everybody and they mama calling him Karlheinz like in the same way Tom Riddle's calling card became Voldemort...

and if we take into the fact that in most lore about demons, the weight of names having some sort of power....i can see it more and more every time i think about it.

And I've made it canon in my head that obviously is his name and his very first son has followed in his steps by also having everybody and they mama call him Shu even though his name is Ririe....

Like father like son no?

Do my thoughts make sense or am I tripping?

I kinda spaz wrote this post because like I said this question has been rotting in my brain.

But Laito mentioned in HDB (Maniac 7) to Richter that they used to live in Eastern Europe a.k.a referring to Romania and was talking about returning there. The Sakamaki’s first lived in Romania in the Human World then were sent back to the Demon World and then after some time to Japan to find Yui because in Laito’s HDB it’s said how Yui was found in Romania but her dad returned to Japan after he got a daughter (Maniac 8). And in Reiji’s HDB Ecstasy Epilogue, Richter says:

I never thought that hunter would succeed in fleeing to this foreign, far-off land behind my back!

That foreign country was Japan, so wouldn’t that mean they all used to live in Romania at some point?

i see what you're saying, and yes it's very strongly implied that Yui is Romanian and that Yui was found in Romanian and then taken to Japan. but the Sakamaki's aren't, and i see your point, but let me explain why there's contradictory evidence.

so in maniac 07, it's translated as "That being said, when we return to Eastern Europe, those pesky hunters are lurking around" which doesn't necessarily mean they LIVED in or grew up in Romania. but even if that IS what they mean, it's important to remember that HDB and MB to CL are sort of separate? when rejet wrote HDB, they didn't think that it'd become such a big franchise. MB starts from basically where HDB starts in terms of character development, whereas games like DF and LE follow on from each other, meaning these are the games which really "matter" in terms of canon lore.

putting the rest under the cut bc it's long and there's also some minor game spoilers.

because of this, there's things which don't make sense in HDB in the context of the rest of the game. there's much more clear evidence that they grew up in the demon world. you need to consider the demon world as its own country, because it is. well, it's its own world. we learn a ton about the demon world in VC and LP, such as the vampires having their own customs, societies, and even landmarks. like i said before, they even have their own language! so when Richter says Seiji fled to a foreign land (aka Japan), that doesn't actually tell us anything about whether the Sakamaki's lived there.

even if it was "from" Romania, like i said, this lore does not follow from MB onwards. it's stated many, many times that the Sakamaki's grew up in the demon world castle and THEN got sent to Japan to find Yui, such as the panel i showed you last time.

in Yuma's dark fate, we see a tunnel which is a portal from Romania to the demon world, in which Shu wrote "ririe" which is his true name in the demon world script. meaning Shu was travelling TO Romania as a kid, not living there.

in Laito's dark fate when they all move back to the demon world, he states that being here brings back bad memories because they grew up there and that's where he has bad memories with Cordelia. other routes in DF imply the same thing; the Sakamaki's don't like being in their demon world castle because it's where all their childhood trauma is from.

this theme follows throughout LE, where everyone moves back to the demon world castle and expresses being uncomfortable. what's also funny to me is in Kino's CL, whereby Kino was collecting pictures of the demon world castle to gather info about the Sakamaki's. he then uses these pictures in the CL miniature world to remind the Sakamaki's of their childhood in order to get their memories back.

like i said before, it's best to consider the demon world as its own world and its own country. Japan is a foreign land to them, and it's best to take the information from MB to CL as canon rather than oddly specific things said in HDB, because a lot of HDB lore gets switched up once rejet realised this was going to be a multi-game series.

TL;DR- there's much, much more evidence in the games which follow each other that the Sakamaki's grew up in the demon world and then relocated to Japan. Yui is most likely Romanian, the Mukami's are Romanian and grew up there, but the Sakamaki's are not Romanian and did not grow up there.

Physique: Shuu est un jeune homme aux cheveux blonds légèrement bouclés, et aux yeux bleu océan dont il a hérité de sa mère. Il a des clous noirs aux deux oreilles. Shuu est toujours vu avec son mp3 attaché à un fil qui est enroulé autour de son cou et avec les écouteurs toujours aux oreilles.

Caractère: Shuu est un vrai dormeur et est vu en général en train de dormir dans le salon ou dans la salle de musique de l'école. Il sèche souvent les cours et a été retenu une fois en tant que senior du lycée. Selon d'autres étudiants, il est le propriétaire de la salle de musique. Apathique et paresseux, Shuu n'aime rien d'autre que la musique. Il écoute toujours de la musique, même dans son bain, aimant la musique classique allant du violon au piano. Il manque de motivation et est assez paresseux pour ne presque rien faire, s'ennuyant de la vie à cause de tous les événements de son enfance traumatisante. Bien que Shuu soit le fils aîné, il ne prend pas la responsabilité de s'occuper de ses cinq frères ou de la maison, poussant principalement le travail à Reiji. Shuu est également un peu pervers. En raison de son passé avec Edgar, il est pyrophobe.

Histoire: Shuu se sent étouffé par l'attention, les restrictions et les responsabilités qui lui ont été imposées, le conduisant à fuir sa maison. Il a ensuite rencontré Edgar, un garçon humain d'un village éloigné dans le monde des humains. Shuu l'atteignit à travers les passages souterrains qui reliaient les mondes démon et humain. Ils sont vite devenus les meilleurs amis. Parce que Shuu a pris l'habitude de s'enfuir pour jouer avec Edgar, Reiji a détruit le village dans un incendie dans une tentative malavisée d'impressionner et d'aider sa mère qui souffrait à chaque fugue de la part de son fils, et d'enlever le bonheur de Shuu par jalousie.
