Tributes pour in for England World Cup hero Gordon Banks

The legendary England goalkeeper Gordon Banks has sadly passed away at the age of 81.

Banks was between the sticks during England’s most famous footballing hour when the 1966 squad clinched their first and only World Cup title.

The former Leicester City and Stoke City glovesman is regarded as one of the finest ‘keepers in the history of the game and he will forever be remembered as an English footballing hero for his contribution to the triumphant 1966 World Cup campaign, playing every match along the way.

‘It is with great sadness that we announce that Gordon passed away peacefully overnight,’ Banks’ family said.

‘We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him.’

Banks may be gone but his legacy remains intact, with current England squad members Raheem Sterling and Harry Maguire leading the tributes to the Three Lions ‘legend’.

‘Of course there was THAT save, but its so much more we are mourning today,’ Manchester City winger Sterling posted on Twitter.

‘RIP Gordon Banks. @England legend, your legacy will live on. All my thoughts with the family.’

Leicester centre-back Maguire added: ‘A World Cup winner, a legend. RIP Gordon Banks 🙏 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿’

England’s top goalscorer in World Cup finals Gary Lineker posted a heartfelt message to his ‘hero’ Banks, while hailing him as one of the greatest to play the sport.

‘Oh no. Gordon Banks, an absolute hero of mine, and countless others, has died,’ Lineker said.

‘@England’s World Cup winner was one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, and such a lovely, lovely man. #RIPGordon.’

Fellow ex-England international Ray Parlour, meanwhile, hailed his save against Pele as the ‘best ever’: ‘More sad news in the football world. Legend Gordon Banks passes away aged 81. Still the best save ever from Pelé header.’

Former Leicester and Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright added: ‘A true legend in every sense of the word, a gentleman and outstanding goalkeeper, RIP our 1966 World Cup winning goalie. The Great Gordon Banks.’

It’s clear to see the impact Banks had on a string of Premier League goalkeepers, with Mark Crossley, Kevin Pressman and Neville Southall all paying their respects.

‘RIP Gordon banks, what a goalkeeper and a lovely fella too #gkunion,’ Crossley posted.

Pressman, who was coached by Banks when just a youngster, added: ‘So sad to hear that Gordon Banks has passed away. A true legend and gentleman. He was my first Goalkeeper Coach when I was a school boy at @swfc when Jack Charlton was manager. I went into the training ground on my 6 weeks holidays to work with him . RIP 😢’
