the audrey and monet friendship we could’ve had (+a monet/max and luna/max rant) and the hyper focus on audrey/julien

ngl gghbo kinda fumbled the bag when they barely had audrey and monet have scenes together explaining why exactly they are friends. i still do not understand what it is that makes them stay together besides the fact they’ve known each other since they were kids (that has not stopped multiple julien/audrey split ups) bc they oppose each other’s values so often. it would have been so interesting to see exactly why the two were friends despite them being so different.

monet and luna share common interests w julien, audrey and luna actually get along with each other, max and aki were close, max and luna also had a lot in common, julien and audrey happened to be close, obie/julien and aki/audrey were dating…but you cannot actually see what makes audrey/monet friends. they have zero in common besides family issues they would have to willingly tell the other abt, which they seldom do bc they aren’t even that close, and monet literally would have to be reluctantly breaking down to admit to any of her friends if something like her dads affair troubled her. there is likely so much else she was holding in that might’ve made audrey sympathetic toward her that monet is not revealing. and monet isn’t really shown to be a sentimental person so it doesn’t make sense as to why she’s still friends with audrey when there’s nothing she needs from her like she does luna/julien.

max and monet i could actually see being more convincing as friends, but in the haze of makidrey max was literally unable to have a life outside audrey who…was not close to monet. literally the writers just didn’t know what to do w monet or luna unless it invovled audrey or julien’s relationships which made zero sense to me bc they’re already great characters on their own.

also these are the writers of riverdale. where is the camp. like…i feel the writers took themsleves too seriously hence the dialogue constantly being shrewd, but tonally that kind of dialogue really only fit monet/luna/max…who personality wise mirror blair/serena/chuck most…again characters who really as the show goes on don’t get any sort of plot outside of audrey/julien and nodding along w everything they do. and then they tried it w audrey insulting zoya and it felt so out of place and as if she was trying a bit hard to be serious abt it whereas when lunet was doing it they did it as if they didn’t have a care in the world.

but if u watch the og gg it can in a sense be comedic, the characters are mocked for their lack of self awareness abt their privilege, and there is no them constantly being somehow virtuous of having a point when they are sabotaging others. gghbo having this thing where monet is the only “evil” character and audrey/julien are saints bc they’re self aware they do shitty things makes zero sense. i’d actually argue monet is more self aware bc she’s considers who she’s hurting and the consequences of how ppl might perceive her to be a bad person which is why she continues to do mean things, whereas audrey and julien care very much if others view them as mean so they try even moreso to hide it. but either way they should’ve all had the characters match that energy or none of them instead of playing favorites.

and by no means were audrey/monet “forced” to constantly be around each other in party settings in s1 but it just seems like they never really liked each other. which is annoying, bc i think they either could’ve complicated the julien/audrey and julien/monet dynamic more by having monet be jealous audrey is more vulnerable with julien, that monet has to willingly be vulnerable with luna to get that in return from her when it comes so easily to the rest of the girls, and character development from monet and realizing that getting hurt is better than refusing to feel anything at all and missing out on amazing things in life. and on top of that monet would be given actual character development that lasted more than a singular episode.

but no we got that julien cheating w a married man plot, aki and max following audrey in circles and not really saying anything, and zoya and monet and luna just…they’re there but none of their conflicts last the entire season and everything is centered around audrey and julien to a point where even obie/aki/max feel out of balance and overshadowed as props next to their character arcs. literally it went from “seven samurai…omg new girl joins the group” to the audrey/julien show w the rest of the main characters in the background unless monet/zoya/luna in particular are aiding in something that eventually goes back to benefiting audrey/julien themselves.

and on top of that…monet and max. the TEA we could’ve had. literally ur telling me max hates aki/audrey rn and monet, who wasn’t allowed to come to italy, is not trying to spite audrey who she often butts heads with morally by reluctantly getting platonically closer to max and taking his side in the makidrey breakup. she could’ve been the one person told of his whereabouts, and luna and max still friends but things necessarily awkward bc of her technically neutral on akimax post makidrey—some sort of consequence for being neutral in situations of audrey where it’s not all abt making audrey look more agreeable as a character even when it doesn’t make sense for her to be. and actually gives luna more agency than just being the voice of reason for max in makidrey.

and also luna who has been w max thru thick and thin giving him emotional support over aki/audrey not getting their act together or treating him as fairly as they could’ve NOT being concerned when they so easily just…lied to max. it makes zero sense that after all the effort luna put in trying to help him save his own relationship, she would not be mad that aki cheated and he and audrey lied to max abt it.
