reprieve
pairing: commander cody  x  reader
summary: you get some much-needed time alone with a certain marshal commander. cody exacerbates relations between the 212th and the 41st.
a/n: for the darling @simping-for-fives, as part of my 600 celebration :D I never thought I’d write for Cody. seems like a crime, now. this was supposed to be fluffy, but I couldn’t help but sprinkle in a little spice. he’s just powerful like that.
hope you enjoy Fatima <3 masterlist n taglist
Tumblr media
After a battle is when he’s always ready to sneak away for you.
He’s not usually so lenient, but he’s also not above pulling rank to get to a spontaneous rendezvous. The perks of getting romantically involved with a Marshal Commander, you suppose — you know nobody will really question why he’s on board the Tranquility when he should be on the Negotiator filing his debriefings (and an injury report, while he’s at it). If you know him by now, which you do, he’s probably arranged for Odd Ball to cover his bureaucratic work while he snatches a couple of moments for himself from his never ending list of duties. He’s bending the rules, responsibly.
It’s how you know he loves you.
Today, ‘bending the rules’ takes the form of relief-born handsiness as he interrupts you working in your quarters, his favorite caf coincidentally brewing in the portable machine he’d gotten you for your birthday. You still aren’t completely sure how he managed to even buy it — perks, again — but it’s proven to be a wise investment over the course of the war and your effectively discreet relationship. It prepares a cup faster than the standard model in the mess, but not fast enough to finish before Cody’s lips find yours.
He keeps you sat on the chair you’d been perched upon while reading transmission reports before he’d come in, caging your body with two calculated hooks of his arms around you. As tantalizing as his lips are on yours, it’s not enough — and you move to raise your own arms to reach for his shoulders, needing some kind of bodily contact. Before you can get very far, a large palm smooths over your hip and pushes down, sending you back the couple centimetres you’d risen with a small oof. It’s immediately followed by a sour pout.
“Stay put,” he murmurs, the ghost of a smile flickering across his lips, which widens the same time your frown does. “I’ll come to you.”
Your eyes roll on instinct. Does he really have to be in charge all the time? “Come on,” you titter, you haven’t even taken off your armour.” Your hands find his vambraces as if to prove your point, but his hands don’t leave from their place beside your thighs on the chair, patiently flexing instead. A flash of amusement glints in his gaze — but you spot the hunger there, too. A matching fervor blazes in your own.
“Can’t you be good for one minute?” It’s a tease — and a challenge. You rise to meet it like a tidal wave.
“If you make it worth being good for.”
His brow sets in dark resolution, but he leans forward nonetheless, mouth inching ever closer to yours, but he turns, angling towards the sweet spot on your neck. You’re almost craning in anticipation, lips nearing their glorious mark, but just as you feel the hover of his presence on your skin, an enthusiastic beep shatters the tension between you. Cody smiles.
“Caf’s ready.” He swoops up and around your seat with a pompous grin, breezing to the counter where two mugs are waiting, but you’re not letting him get away that easy. Be good, my ass, your consciousness retorts, and suddenly you’re up and pushing him backwards when he turns to face you.
His back hits the wall next to the cafmaker, and your lips are on his before he can even blink. His eyes flutter shut, though, when he feels your tongue breach his mouth and wrap around his own. When his fingers find your sides and spread hotly along your uniform, a thrum of satisfaction burns warm through your veins. Your noses bump as he slants into a deeper kiss, and you sigh contentedly when he squeezes you to him.
Unfortunately, you’re interrupted again by the sound of a tentative knock on the door to your cabin, and you detach yourself from Cody’s face with an exasperated gasp. He smirks at you, infuriatingly, before cornering you back against the chair, leaning over you once more and fisting the back of the seat as a hand weighs heavy on your shoulder, leading you down to your original position. He teases another kiss along your swollen lips, holding steady as you try to rush into it again. “Sit down.” He breathes out the command under his breath. “I’ll get it.”
You’re glued to your spot in an impatient daze as the trooper — Buzz, you recognize — greets Cody with confused hesitance and asks for your help with some of the newer communications officers that are struggling to delegate without you.
“She’s occupied at the moment,” Cody replies flatly, and suddenly, you’re quite thankful he hadn’t taken off his armour — paired with his appearance and level-headed diction, your trooper doesn’t seem any the wiser.
You’ve always said Cody’s the best liar in the GAR.
“Is it really a problem that requires the attention of the chief communications officer?” The way he says your title with just a hint of annoyance brings a laugh tickling in your chest, and you exhale fondly as he saves you from whatever small mess is happening on the bridge. He really does sound like he’s just been poring over flimsiwork.
Buzz pauses. “Um, no, sir.” Then, again. “At least, I don’t think so.”
Cody stares back, unimpressed. “I suggest you let the new COMMOs know that they can’t ask for their C.O.’s help every time there’s a little bump in the road. This isn’t a training simulation.” You hear the thud of Buzz’s foot as he straightens in a salute. “And next time, have them come get her themselves. You’re a trooper, not a messenger.”
“Sir, yes, sir!” Cody punches the release to send your door sliding closed as Buzz makes his retreat, and you tap your ankle to quell the mirth in your system. When he meets your eyes after circling back around to face you, the businesslike decorum falls away once he sees your bitten smile.
“Don’t start,” he groans, but you’re already laughing.
“I’m just saying,” your fingers find his face, pulling down as he smiles against his will. Your heart preens at the view. “My men aren’t used to your harshness. Wouldn’t want any bad blood between the 41st and the 212th.” He kisses your thumb when it glides down from across his scar, relaxing more the longer he’s in your hold. “It’s hard enough smuggling you in here without a couple people noticing. ‘Ensuring uniformity between departments’ is getting a little old.”
When he dips his head lower to mouth at your neck, the heavy heat of before breathes back to life in your chest, and it reflects in his glowing gaze. “Getting old, huh?” His knees hit the floor as he descends in front of you. “Hopefully that’s the only thing.”
You grin wider at him, his dominance bleeding into clinginess after the forced interaction. He always acts as though every unnecessary conversation pains him, but you know it’s only because he’s got too many headaches of his own to deal with. You do, too, which is what makes each second spent together so precious. “Don’t worry, I’m not tired of you yet. Gonna take a lot more than your attitude to drive me away.”
He hums, finished with conversation. He’s spent the gamut of his words, today. A curl of steam from the counter catches your eye as he traps you further in your seat, both with the expanse of his body and his affection.
“Caf’s getting cold,” you breathe, only half serious. He presses his lips to yours before answering you a final time.
“Let it.”
(You do.)

The Inventor of Ibuprofen Tested the Drug on His Own Hangover

The Inventor of Ibuprofen Tested the Drug on His Own Hangover
Tumblr media
In retrospect, perhaps toasting the success of a new medication he helped invent with several shots of vodka in Moscow was not a good idea. However, it was too late to go back. English research scientist Stewart Adams was faced with the consequences of his actions: a serious hangover.
As he woke up that morning in 1971, Adams realized he needed to do something to relieve his throbbing headache, so he could coherently deliver an important speech at a pharmacological conference in a few hours. He reached for that new drug and swallowed a 600-milligram dose. Voila!
“He took a handful of ibuprofen and felt fine,” recalls his son David Adams. “No hangover!”
While the drug had been tested for pain in clinical trials, no one had yet tried it on an alcohol-induced headache. The older Adams would later say, “That was testing the drug in anger, if you like. But I hoped it really could work magic.”
Stewart Adams and his associate John Nicholson invented a pharmaceutical drug known as 2-(4-isobutylphenyl) propionic acid. It was later renamed ibuprofen and is now one of the world’s most popular nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) under the brand names of Brufen, Advil, Motrin, Nurofen and others. It is estimated that one package of the product is sold every three seconds in the United States.

For their work, both Adams and Nicholson were inducted into the 2020 class of the National Inventors Hall of Fame. They were honored for creating a drug that is used worldwide to safely and effectively treat pain, fever and inflammation for conditions from arthritis, headaches and even hangovers.
“He was an incredibly dedicated and passionate scientist,” says his son, who followed his father’s footsteps in science. “He had several setbacks in his career, but he was quite determined. I always admired his persistence.”
One of those obstacles was, in fact, ibuprofen. Adams had originally set out to find a cure for rheumatoid arthritis. While he was obviously pleased with the success of ibuprofen, he was disappointed that he never developed a drug that would reverse the debilitating disease that affects millions of people.
“My father was enormously proud of what he accomplished, but readily admitted that it was based on a failure,” says David Adams, who is vice chancellor and head of the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham in England, as well as a medical doctor, professor of hepatology and researcher. “He really wanted to find a cure for rheumatoid arthritis. Ibuprofen became an effective treatment for the disease, but it was no cure.”
Stewart Adams began his career in pharmaceuticals at the young age of 16, when he started an apprenticeship at a drug store owned by Boots UK Limited, then known as Boots the Chemist. He went on to earn a degree in pharmacy at the University of Nottingham and then received his PhD in pharmacology at the University of Leeds. Adams rejoined Boots in the research department in 1952 and started working on a cure for rheumatoid arthritis. His goal was to develop something that was as effective as steroids but had none of the side effects.
Adams began his research by studying how aspirin worked, which no one else was doing at the time. He was interested in the drug’s anti-inflammatory properties and hoped to find something that mimicked those qualities but didn’t cause an allergic reaction, bleeding or stomach irritation like aspirin could.
Tumblr media
Chemist John Nicholson helped Stewart Adams test more than 600 different compounds in hopes of finding one that could reduce inflammation and that most people could tolerate.
(National Inventors Hall of Fame)
Adams recruited Nicholson, a chemist, to help him test more than 600 different compounds in hopes of finding one that could reduce inflammation and that most people could tolerate. They narrowed down the field to five drugs. The first four went into clinical trials and all failed. The fifth, though, proved to be successful. They received a U.S. patent for ibuprofen in 1966. Three years later, it was approved as a prescription drug in England and soon became available around the world as an over-the-counter pain reliever.
Kim Rainsford edited a book on the drug, Ibuprofen: Discovery, Development and Therapeutics. The professor emeritus at Sheffield Hallam University in England is considered a leading authority on ibuprofen.
“It is handled and metabolized in the body very predictably,” he said in an interview with the BBC in 2011. “It accumulates very well in sites where you need pain relief. It’s got a very good safety profile, it’s got wide acceptance because it does control inflammation as well as the painful symptoms.”
David Adams says his father had a “wonderful sense of humor.” The son recalls how his dad helped him with a research paper that was actually critical of some of the attributes of ibuprofen. When it was published, someone approached the senior Adams and commented how the paper was authored by someone with the same last name. “Oh, that’s interesting,” Stewart Adams replied with a wry smile.
The younger Adams says his father liked to joke he was the only person who lost money on the invention of ibuprofen. Even though the drug was patented by him and Nicholson, who died in 1983, they received no royalties for its enormous success. In fact, Adams paid the 1 pound filing fee for the patent but never submitted the receipt for reimbursement by Boots.
As the popularity of ibuprofen spread, so did Adams’ fame. He was recognized for his achievement with numerous honors, including in 1987 an OBE, or Officer of the Order of the British Empire, which is bestowed by Queen Elizabeth upon people who make a significant impact in their field of work.
“Through their collaboration, Stewart Adams and John Nicholson were able to show that ibuprofen was safer and more effective than many previous pain relievers,” says Rini Paiva, executive vice president for selection and recognition at the National Inventors Hall of Fame. “Today, ibuprofen use is widespread, and it is one of the safest, most effective and most widely used treatments for reducing pain, fever and inflammation. All of this contributed toward the inclusion of Adams and Nicholson in our latest class of world-changing inductees.”
Adams even made it on a list with actor George Clooney as one of “The 50 men who really understand women.” Published by the Guardian in 2007, it ranked him 26th because ibuprofen had become “the most effective remedy for hangovers and period pain known to womankind.”
“He got on the list because of how the drug helped with menstrual pain,” says David Adams. “My mother was always amused by that and would say my father should have been on the list of men who least understood women.”
Joking aside, Adams says his mother, Mary, was extremely supportive of her husband and two sons, including Chris, a solicitor, or lawyer, in Nottingham. She was also a scientist but left the field to raise a family and later become a teacher.
Stewart Adams died in 2019 at the age of 95. His son says he was a humble person who went to the pharmacy and purchased ibuprofen just like everyone else. He didn’t make a big deal out of his invention but was particularly pleased about how it brought relief to millions of people.
“He was scrupulous about playing by the rules and would never expect a free supply from Boots,” David remembers. “He never mentioned that he was the inventor and listened patiently when the person selling it would ask if he had taken it before. Dad was a remarkable man.”

Alright, #83 from the One Hundred Ways to Say I love you with Fox, please? If not Fox could Echo work?
of course, aro! you are too sweet to provide a “just in case” backup, but I’d happily write anyone for you (plus, I just got struck with the inspiration for fox). much love to you and him <3 thank you for the req!!
✵✵✵ rini’s minis ; fox + coming to the rescue
you’d gotten snippy with him this morning.
he’d been crankier than normal thanks to extra shifts while thire was out with a broken leg, which hadn’t helped with getting the sleep he so obviously needed. over breakfast, you’d made a comment about how he could do with spectacles from the way he was squinting at his datapad, and he’d asked you to leave him alone. you hadn’t kissed him goodbye when he left your flat.
and now you were trapped in your office building, alone after-hours. you’d even bid the janitor goodnight as he left, and then the power had gone out not long after. you’d only just realized that it wasn’t a routine blackout, but the result of a separatist bombing—and the panic had only increased when you’d found that the emergency locks had engaged in the entire building, sealing off your exit for who knows how long.
no one knew you were still working. the only reason you’d stayed late was to avoid coming home to the tension from earlier, not knowing how to apologize.
it was a stupid idea, logically, to call him. he’d be in the middle of central power distribution grid, at the source of the bombing. you were almost ten levels below, and not even on the same side of the city. he was needed elsewhere.
and yet...
you’d always been independent. fox coming into your life hadn’t changed that, but he’d worked his way so deep into your heart that you found yourself craving him anyways—not just out of alarm, but to know he was safe, and in one piece—that he’d be coming back home to you. the memory of the morning flashes behind your eyelids, and you press your head to your knees from where you’ve crouched beside your desk. you didn’t want that be the last thing you said to him if he got hurt, or worse, responding to the attack on the grid.
just as your fingers hover over your comlink to tap in the outgoing message, it beeps startlingly with a shrill insistence that you jump. after another half-second, you bat at your wrist accept the comm and quiet the ring.
your heart both sings and crumbles at the breathless voice that buzzes through and calls your name. “fox?” you respond with his own, feeling a wave of fresh tears fill your eyes. you almost don’t believe he’s really called.
“where are you?” the urgency of his tone sends streaks of fear swirling to your chest, but you swallow down the lump in your throat to answer. his sharp inhale clues you to believe that he knows already that your sector was one of the first to be plagued by the resulting fires across the city—another flash of orange sparks from outside the window briefly illuminates your face, but it does nothing to quell the panic that’s settled in your limbs.
“fox, are you —” your voice fails you. “how bad is it?”
he pauses before answering, though you can hear the commotion in the background. the image of him, leaning against some alley wall or building lobby just to steal a couple moments of privacy to comm you, materializes in your brain and your heart swells, but not just out of love. the very fact that he’s calling you while he’s on duty is telling of just how concerning the situation is—how scared he must be, too. instead of answering, he clears his throat. “are you okay?”
you pause, too, silently debating on how truthful you should be. it wouldn’t be good for him to know that you were trapped and alone while he couldn’t do anything about it. but by the way he asks your name again, in a softness he’s only rarely used before, you shake your head. maybe he’d be able to send a unit to come help you.
“I’m stuck.” you don’t know why the admission has your tears finally falling, but you wipe them away quickly. “I was working, and the doors shut off...there’s no one else here.” you hear a sniffle, but you’re not sure if it’s from you or fox. “I—I’m scared.”
this time, there’s no hesitation in his reply. his voice is clear when he tells you, “stay put. I’m coming to get you.”
“fox—”
“please, don’t argue with me, love,” the term of endearment alone is enough to silence you, and you wonder if he’s even realized it. he’s never called you that before.
you swipe at your eyes again, a shaky laugh escaping you. “I can’t really go anywhere, so staying put’s not a problem.”
“you know what I mean.” you do. he’s telling you to not worry, to be brave. that he’ll be there soon. hope shines through the cloud of worry that has plagued you since the building went dark.
“okay.” you whisper a short goodbye, a be safe, and the comm cuts out, but your relief doesn’t end with it. somehow, you feel less alone, less frightened despite the circumstances.
fox was coming. it would be okay.

600 follower celebration!
Tumblr media
*cries in I appreciate you guys* my 500 celebration was literally 12 days ago, I am tooo blessed. you make my entire life. I’m sorry my writing traction has slowed! I hope to get back in the groove soon, which is why #1 of the celebration is...
a prompt list!! it’s been quite a bit since I reblogged one of these, but this one is perfect for the way I’m feeling about you all: ‘ways to say I love you’. just send me an ask with the number and character and I’ll write a blurb or a fic for you depending on my inspiration!
also, I started a discord server! this was such a last minute idea and I just made the server last night (I went to bed at 8am oops), but I’m in a couple of pretty specialized servers and I think it would be cool to have just a general one where people can just chat, make friends, and share their work. anyone and everyone is welcome, and don’t feel like you have to be really an active texter or familiar with discord to join! I thought that it could be an opportunity to be more ~social~ and connect more people with each other hehe. I might make a post elaborating, but I think it’s pretty explanatory. msg me if the link is wacky or expired.
lastly, my ko-fi: I really was hesitant about making one, and please, take this with a grain of salt. I just thought it wouldn’t hurt to have set up for my student loans—but your comments and reblogs are more than enough :-)
gosh, thank you so much. from the bottom of my heart, I never expected to have met so many awesome people and share something really close to me. writing on here has been such a wonderful joy, and it’s really all because of each and every single one of you. I wanna reiterate again, if there’s anything you want me to see or read, please don’t hesitate to tag it with #userkarina so I can reblog it and give you some appreciation in return!
before I go, special shoutout to @obiwankenobiness for my amazing header. can never miss an opportunity to put your work on blast <3
much love to everyone. thank you all again. petons, karina
