Kaia/Kaliyo thoughts

I think the main thing that pulls me to them, that makes me truly just lose my mind over them, for two lying liars - sometimes professionally, sometimes recreationally - there's a level of honesty because of them recognizing that in each other, seeing it, knowing it, and understanding it. I think that honesty is part of what draws them to each other. It offers this level of comfort, they don't have to explain that part of themselves, and there's no risk of that part being an issue. Kaia adapts and can integrate herself wherever needed, be whatever needed, it's something she likes about herself, that she can always fill the role required of her. With Kaliyo it's like the cover can come off. They're allowed their secrets, and they don't have to explain these 'unsavory' parts of themselves or pretend to be anything or anyone else.

“...even listening to me?”

A sharp ache tore through their waist as Thaston jolted awake, blinking away their drowsiness to focus on their surroundings, remembering that they had been seated in the co-pilot’s chair on the ship with Kaliyo flying them to report on what had transpired at the Star Cabal’s hideout. The adrenaline had given way to bone-weary exhaustion at some point, must have let them doze off to the hum of the hyperdrive as they slouched in their seat, only for Kaliyo to rudely smack a hand against their ribs that were still sore from Corellia.

Slowly, they eased themself upright again. “What?”

“I said we’re coming out of hyperspace.” Kaliyo paused to flip some of the glowing switches spread before them. “Last chance to cut and run, if you actually want to play this smart.”

Tendrils of dread clawed at their insides as the hyperspace lines faded and replaced with stars, revealing the station where the remnants of Intelligence had taken refuge, and they hated how familiar that fear had become. Facing the people who had ordered the control over them, having to pretend that it didn’t bother them? That was the last thing that they wanted to do.

Especially after the deal that Thaston had just made with Ardun Kothe.

Kaliyo wasn’t stupid. She had left the room for them to talk, but she heard the initial offer, and she had to know that Thaston had brokered an arrangement to be a double agent for real this time. And they were certain that she didn’t care for it as much as she hated their work for the Empire, too. She had made it perfectly clear with a proposition to disappear and take up some jobs somewhere far away from this shitstorm by the time they passed through the airlock.

(Not that it was the first time that Kaliyo had ever offered for them to run away with her. But this time, they wondered when they might actually give into the idea. The looming station in the distance certainly tempted them to go for it).

Thaston stared at their shaking blue hand, opting to fold their arms over their chest to stop it. “You don’t have to stick around.”

A few years ago, Kaliyo probably would’ve snapped at them, arguing that they were trying to run on her. But now, she simply shrugged. “Not like I have anywhere else I need to be.”

“By which you mean that you still haven’t drained my bank account of all my credits yet, right?”

“Our bank account. Except when you’re an asshole, then it’s mine.” Kaliyo stretched languidly in her seat, pale arms reaching across their peripheral. “Making use of that fancy bed in the captain’s quarters isn’t too bad either.”

They shook their head and huffed a laugh, but something about the comment brought a pang to their chest. Still, though, they were grateful for the familiarity of banter with Kaliyo, and the occasional distraction that she provided when neither of them had anything else going on in their private lives, grounding them to reality despite everything.

“Hey. Look at me,” Kaliyo demanded.

Thaston turned to her, blinking slowly. The ship was closing in on the station. The beacon flared to life as the station hailed them for clearance codes to land in the docking bay. Kaliyo stared for a prolonged moment rather than answering it, her gray eyes searching them for something.

“Are we going through with this?”

We. The subtle reminder that maybe, just maybe, she did have their back in spite of all the posturing that she was going to take their credits and run as soon as she grew bored was enough to steel their resolve.

Thaston swallowed around the lump in their throat. “Yeah. We are.”

20 Questions Tag Game – Writers Edition

I was tagged by the lovely @i-choose-liam​

1.       When/what age did you start writing?

I started writing fanfiction when I was about 13? Took me til 18 to finish that fic and I had to re-write the first ten chapters before I posted the last few because it was literally burning my eyes haha. But I’m still proud that I stuck with it!

2.       What inspired you to start writing?

I’ve only ever written fanfiction, so it’s always been that “what if” style from watching my favourite shows - and now playing my favourite games. I usually think in one-shots, easier ways to bend canon slightly to match what I’m thinking about! So this longfic for SWTOR (and now TRR) is an interesting change for me!

3.       Where and when does inspiration usually strike you?

Same as everyone else, exactly when it’s not supposed to! In the shower, going to bed, daydreaming at work while my timesheet judges me for how little information is on it even after I’ve been at work for three hours.......

4.       Where and when do you usually write? Morning? Late at night? On the bus? In bed?

I hate writing on my phone because I write so much it tends to break the google docs whoops. So most of my writing is done on my computer at home, either at night during the week or on the weekends. 

5.       Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what genre/playlist?

Yeah, I tend to listen to music when I’m writing - I’m not used to silence, so the music weirdly sometimes helps me concentrate. I don’t have playlists, it’s usually just opening youtube or the music folders on my computer and picking whatever I feel like!

6.       Which category do you like best? Angst? Fluff? NSFW? Other?

My brain always develops fantastical plotlines for overdramatic angst - but I find it easiest to write fluff. I’ve only tried a few NSFW fics and they seem to have been well-received so far haha. 

Oh and I generally always write romances. I’ll explore friendships and greater conflicts within a story, but the romance is the reason I start it, or is a central theme to it all. 

7.       Which category do you find most challenging to write?

I’m not particularly great at angst because I can hear the voices of my betas in my head judging me for my cruelty xD

8.       If you had to pick your favourite Choices book, which one would it be and why?

The Royal Romance is the only book I’ve played beginning to end (I only discovered the game mid-last month!) and as I’m writing fic for it it’s pretty close to my favourite! I also really like Desire and Decorum so far, but so much of it also makes me rail because the MC’s choices due to the timeline are more limited. Clara is more trapped by societal expectations and her life depends on these people. Riley is an outsider coming in, she has more opportunities and could survive if she had to leave Cordonia. 

Plus Desire & Decorum isn’t finished yet so I’m reserving judgement until I find out if I can stab the Duke with a hat pin. 

There’s a reason that many of my female characters are uniquely powerful in some aspect in their universes (usually magic, if its around) and it’s because I HATE the idea of being completely helpless. 

9.       If your Choices LIs were real, which one (and only one) would you personally want to be with?

Again, the only book I have finished and have the full story for is The Royal Romance, so I’m going to say Liam. I adore the other TRR romance options, but I also know that I would struggle to date any of them - I would love to be all of their friends, but yeah, I couldn’t date them. 

10.   Do you share any physical characteristics with your Choices MCs? Pics/Selfies optional.

Not really - I have pale skin, very dark brown eyes, and shoulder length brown hair and none of my MCs have all of that except my Morgan from Big Sky Country. I didn’t like the brown hair options on the other girls or they have different skin tones/hair/eye colours. 

11.   Which MC do you share the most personality traits with?

Again I haven’t finished any of the games so it’s a bit hard to tell but so far I like Kai from Perfect Match’s complete skepticism at the beginning, cause that was my exact reaction too haha. I also match Riley from TRR when she’s being particularly fierce or defensive of her friends - but I’m a bit too clumsy and loud and argumentative to be Riley haha. Overall none of them really match me that well, but I can recognise some traits and choices like “yes this is definitely me oops”. 

12.   Which Choices character do you feel you have the best grasp of in terms of personality?

I haven’t written much in the Choices verse, just TRR, and surprisingly I think it might be Drake. His personality, if not his backstory, is very similar to how I write Arcann Tirall in my giant SWTOR fic, and I’ve had a bit of practice with that. Low self-worth, huge protective streak, prickly attitude, gruff, falling in love with a girl who won’t take his dumb attitude lying down.....

Or, if I’m allowed to pick my MC, probably my Riley because I’m lazily taking her from the same fic and just making an AU version of her to smooch a cute prince haha. So I’ve written a lot about her and in her POV which should hopefully make it easy to roll her into a more modern setting. 

13.   What’s your favourite Choices pairing to write for?

Liam x MC, aka the only one I’ve written haha. 

14.   What is a pairing(s) you hope to start writing for?

Drake x MC’s little sister. I like to write multiple pairings into my fics but with different characters (let’s not make the only drama about cheating alright folks). then I get to explore the dynamics across all ships at the same time.

If I ever get into it, perhaps Clara/Mr Sinclaire too, but I’m waiting for that book to finish first!

15.   What do you hope to improve in your writing?

I predominantly write dialogue, occasionally broken up with paragraphs of character introspection, but I do need to practice at writing descriptions and environments. The only writing I intend to do is fanfiction, so I tend to take advantage of a fandom’s familiarity with the setting to escape writing about it!

16.   Any pet peeves related to writing?

The perception that the only way to create “DRAMA” in a relationship is with cheating. Especially in fandoms like TRR where the cheating angle is unfortunately canon to the game if you don’t romance Liam. I mean I understand why people want to explore the options further because the game kinda railroads you into just going along with it but also....its fanfiction. The sky’s the limit! Why not write your characters being happy without that? Write an MC who tells Liam after the ball and then pursues her chosen LI! Write an MC where Liam doesn’t fall in love at all and they just stay as friends! Write MC

17.   Are you inspired by any IRL experiences when you write? Care to share?

Occasionally my own experiences seep through - like my SWTOR fic, having Felix and Lieca fall apart. At the time of developing that plotline, I was feeling trapped in a relationship where my partner loved me more than I loved him, so I wanted to explore how that could happen, break, and then allow two characters to heal from it to deal with it in my own way. 

I tend to also deal with my frustrations at certain storyline points or plots within stories by having characters reflect my personal feelings on the matter and then discuss them/dismiss them/move past that thorny issue entirely. 

18.   Is there any particular piece of work you consider to be your ultimate writing goal? Something so amazing you hope one day you’ll be up to that’s standard?

I’m going to say the obvious here.... @defira85 is one of the most amazing writers I have ever come across in fandom, and her imagination and capacity to shape both her own stories and those of her friends (we jokingly call our fics a multiverse for how many of our characters keep showing up in each other’s stories) is simply phenomenal. 

I have no intention to write professionally, so I am content with my own skills in fanfiction, but Defira is something else! Yes I took an opportunity to pretend to come up with a goal and instead just praised her DEAL WITH IT. 

19.   Did/do you write for any other fandoms? If so which ones?

All the fanfiction! Some published, most not - I’ve written for YuGiOh, Legend of Zelda, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Harry Potter, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Final Fantasy VII

20.   In your spare time (when you’re not writing) what other hobbies do you pursue?

Playing ALL of the video games and avoiding life’s responsibilities! Hell yeah B)

There are more but I tried to limit myself to 3 each. I have over 10000 songs on my itunes. But I’m also consistently looking for new music. Another reason I’m pissed at 8tracks’ weekly limit. I would just go there and search a character or a genre. I have discovered some amazing bands I would never have found before. Radio here is extremely limited. There is one classic rock station that plays the same songs from the same artists everyday. All the other stations are Christian or Country... (Get me out of East Tennessee, omg send help!) Pandora can be good but sometimes limited. 

As for my characters: Rossa was a complete accident that she became my main SWTOR character. My first SWTOR character was Billi who would become Rossa’s sister. I played her in beta. I didn’t even make Rossa until like 3 days after launch, she was just meant to be a Light Side Knight because I wanted to do a Doc romance. (I deleted and replayed her making her exclusive to Theron. Then made a new Knight for Doc. Her sexuality and love interests have been all over the place...) It wasn’t until I completed her first play through that she clicked with me. Then Shadow of Revan came out and I’m just a complete goner. 

I will admit I don’t have all my character fleshed out. I always feel weird about just talking unprompted about my characters. Like, do you guys really want to hear about my shitty children? Though I do get very exited when people do!

8. Preferred class + spec for gameplay?

concealment operative is my absolute favorite, maybe it's because I played imp agent first (i think i played lethality the first time) but it feels so comfortable and enjoyable, whereas other classes have felt so difficult because i don't gel with the gameplay.

i think both concealment and lethality have 'backstab' but my fave combination of things is: stealth - holotraverse - backstab

17. A quest(line) you loathe doing?

Tatooine planet storyline, I've seen it and played it too many times and it just feels like it goes on forever.

49. Favorite pet?

ooo this one is hard, i love nexu, they remind me of cats! but also the sleen, tauntaun, and grophet are all v good and cute!

there’s just something that really fucks me up about Kaia, who doesn’t get attached and keeps a cold practiced emotional distance from everyone and is a little too much her job, and Kaliyo, who is destruction and chaos and someone who leaves the moment she’s bored or it’s convenient, staying with each other and knowing each other. it’s the being seen.... it’s the acceptance....
