"i picked up some fresh ingredients for your favorite." jay set the bags on the counter and turned around to talk more to you but you just tackled him in a hug. so listened to George's whole team radio (will listen to Lewis' later today), aside from the fact that George/Riki convos could lull you to sleep for how comfy and relaxed they are with one another, not sure if many noticed that George also immediately thought about (his tyres possible performance at the) restart when the first vsc came on. So the thought is always there in his mind, and when MV and Charles pitted under the sc afterwards he just got his confirmations to his doubts. 1/2

i know, it's like therapy!! ✨ for those people who are actually interested in the sport and want to know more about what goes on behind the scenes etc, i really advise to check out the radios after the race, because it'll make you appreciate these drivers and engineers even more

anyway, yeah george knew immediately that the restart on the mediums was a huge risk and asked the team if they were sure about staying out. tyre warm up might be the W13's biggest weakness, it was guaranteed that leaving both of them out wasn't going to achieve anything, and you saw that even lewis struggled massively after the safety car ended (i say even, because i do think that george struggles with tyre temps and thus safety car restarts a bit more than lewis). on worse tyres, in a slower car, track positions doesn't mean much in the new era of f1 cars. and george was content even with dropping a position to charles if it meant he was on new softs.

but yeah the strategy team was not shining that's for sure. i don't know if there was some miscommunication about all this on the pitwall and between the engineers, because the "you're splitting" line suggests that they might have thought of pitting lewis and leaving george out. however lewis and bono never talk about stopping for softs, not even when they know the SC will go through the pitlane... i get that lewis expected george to be a buffer between him and verstappen (and felt hard done by when george did pit), but i do also think he wanted the win a bit too much at that point, and he wasn't thinking about the race picture at all. they were screwed on the mediums no matter what, they still had almost 14 laps to go. had it been just 2-3 laps left, i think valuing track position could have made sense, but in this scenario it was just dumb

and those people who say that george "forced" the pitstop on the team, oh my god 💀 they are either there with the tyres or not. he does make the call in the end, but you can't "force" a stop on your team. they listened to him and were ready for him.

george was just a smart man, felt the temps dropping from his tyres, knew he was going to be a sitting duck and with the SC going through the pitlane he saw the opportunity. very impressive stuff from him as always 🧠 but the fact lewis was left out there and ended p4 is not on him. it's not his job to think about lewis' strat, it's the team's job to coordinate the two cars, and they failed at that on sunday. but george making the right call and pitting arguably got them p2-p4 instead of p3-p4...

Since we're airing kinks, I have a thing for George and Riki's convos on team radio. They're so bantery and silly sometimes, but also a perfectly oiled machine when George is nearing top positions/chasing other drivers, and the way that Riki cheers on George when he gets his results at the end or how he also sounds incredibly bummed when he misses are quite lovely, not gonna lie.

You’re dead on! I am quite fond of Riki, we don’t know much about him, but he was Lewis’ performance engineer and spent years next to Bono, so the guy has clearly picked up some tricks, and I’m loving seeing he and George find their niche, what works for them. But I can say the same for listening to Lewis and Bono, they’re so funny.

It’s so important race engineers gel with their driver I think, and I’m delighted to see George get that. It’s much more than making choices for them, they have to be that wall of calm, the one who keeps them moving. A good example is Bono in Spain not letting Lewis retire, or Riki yesterday reminding George it would only take one SC for him to be back in the game. Regardless of what did happen, he was right, and I’m glad for him.

All right, apparently I can’t let this thought go: so, if james v or the strat team were kinda adamant of not splitting Lewis and George strats when the sc was deployed, why did they call George in last minute? Either someone from G side of the garage (Riki?) recognised his soft tyres guessing was correct and fought james v over his decisio or…? Or James v had a sudden epiphany? Why change strat at the last possible second?and they didn’t tell neither Lewis or Bono, it would seem? So many doubts
