There Existed an Addiction to Blood by clipping.
1. Intro 2. Nothing is Safe 3. He Dead (feat. Ed Balloon) 4. Haunting (interlude) 5. La Mala Ordina (with The Rita) (feat. Elcamino & Benny The Butcher) 6. Club Down (with Sarah Bernat) 7. Prophecy (interlude) 8. Run for Your Life (feat. La Chat) 9. The Show 10. Possession (interlude) 11. All in Your Head (feat. Counterfeit Madison & Robyn Hood) 12. Blood of the Fang 13. Story 7 14. Attunement (with Pedestrian Deposit) 15. Piano Burning
The science-fiction visionary Octavia Butler once declared that “there is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns.” The aphorism could apply to any art form where the basic contours are fixed, but the appetite for innovation remains infinite. Enter Clipping, flash fiction genre masters in a hip-hop world firmly rooted in memoir. If first person confessionals historically reign, the mid-city Los Angeles trio of rapper Daveed Diggs and producers William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes have spent the last half-decade terraforming their own patch of soil, replete with conceptual labyrinths and industrial chaos. They have conjured a mutant emanation of the future, built at odd angles atop the hallowed foundation of the past.
Their third album for Sub Pop, There Existed an Addiction to Blood, finds them interpreting another rap splinter sect through their singular lens. This is clipping’s transmutation of horrorcore, a purposefully absurdist and creatively significant sub-genre that flourished in the mid-90s. If some of its most notable pioneers included Brotha Lynch Hung and Gravediggaz, it also encompasses seminal works from the Geto Boys, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and the near-entirety of classic Memphis cassette tape rap.
The most subversive and experimental rap has often presented itself as an “alternative” to conventional sounds, but Clipping respectfully warp them into new constellations. There Existed an Addiction to Blood absorbs the hyper-violent horror tropes of the Murder Dog era, but re-imagines them in a new light: still darkly-tinted and somber, but in a weirder and more vivid hue. If traditional horrorcore was akin to Blacula, the hugely popular blaxploitation flick from the early 70s, Clipping’s latest is analogous to Ganja & Hess, the blood-sipping 1973 cult classic regarded as an unsung landmark of black independent cinema, whose score the band samples on “Blood of the Fang.”
From the opening “Intro,” Clipping summon an unsettling eeriness. Diggs sounds like he’s rapping through a drive-thru speaker about the bottom falling out, bodies hitting the floor, and recurrent ghosts. You hear ambient noises, footsteps and shovels. The hairs on your arms stick up like bayonets. You can practically see the knife’s edge, sharp and luminous.
Each song contains its own premise and conceptual bent. There is “Nothing is Safe,” a reversal of Assault on Precinct 13, where the band create their own version of a John Carpenter-inspired rap beat and the cops are the ones raiding a trap house. Diggs sketches the narrative from the perspective of the victims, full of lurid and visceral details and intricate wordplay. The windows are boarded and sealed, the product simmers on the stove, the bodies sleep fitfully in shifts. Then law enforcement arrives and the bullets start to fly.
“He Dead” turns police officers into werewolves while Diggs flips Kendrick Lamar’s “Riggamortis” into something gravely literal.“All In Your Head” finds Clipping re-contextualizing the pimp talk of Suga Free and Too $hort into a metaphor for an Exorcist-style possession. The album contains interludes featuring hissing recordings of demonic invasions and guest appearances from Griselda Gang’s Benny the Butcher and Hypnotize Minds horror queen La Chat. Other tracks feature contributions from noise music legends The Rita and Pedestrian Deposit. It all ends with “Piano Burning,” a performance of a piece written by the avant-garde composer Annea Lockwood. Yes, it is the sound of a piano burning.
In the hands of the less imaginative or less virtuosic, it could come off as overwrought or pretentious. Instead, Clipping annex new terrain for a sub-genre often left for dead. In its own way, one could compare what they’ve accomplished to Tarantino’s post-modern reworkings of critically overlooked but creatively fertile blaxploitation, horror and spaghetti western cinema.
Everything fits neatly into the broader scope of the band’s career, which has seen them expand from insular experimentalists into globally recognized artists. Since the release of their first album in 2013, Diggs has won a Tony and a Grammy, as well as co-written and starred in 2018’s critically hailed Blindspotting, while Snipes and Hutson have scored numerous films and television shows.
Clipping’s last album, the 2016 afro-futurist dystopian space opus Splendor & Misery was recently named one of Pitchfork’s Best Industrial Albums of All-Time. Commissioned for an episode of “This American Life,” their 2017 single “The Deep” became the inspiration for a novel of the same name, written by Rivers Solomon and published by Saga Press. But it’s their latest masterwork that embodies what the band had been building towards — a work that finds them without peer. This is experimental hip-hop built to bang in a post-apocalyptic club bursting with radiation. It’s horror-core that soaks up past blood and replants it into a different organism, undead but dangerously alive. It is a new sun, blindingly bright and built to burn your retinas. releases October 18, 2019

RPDR 10 Cast !!
It is March 2018 and Season 10 of RuPaul’s Riggamortis Race is upon us !! It’s time to meet a whole new bunch of bitches and gag on their charisma , uniqueness , nerve and talent ( and sometimes lack thereof ) as they battle it out to be America’s next drag superstar. So what better way to kick off the new season and my new blog other than giving my personal thoughts on the Season 10 girls ? Let’s get into it ...
AQUARIA , 21 , NEW YORK CITY
I’ve followed Aquaria on Instagram for a while now and have always been a fan of her makeup and performance skills but I never really got into her personality. Needless to say , after watching her Meet The Queen’s video , I should’ve continued to mind my damn business lmao. The Trixie as RuPaul head movements are distracting af and the whole cunty attitude thing , which I’m guessing was supposed to read as confident , just comes off as forced and over rehearsed. Aquaria ACTUALLY has enough talent to let it speak for itself and that’s something she should consider lol , still excited to see what she does tho.
ASIA O’HARA , 30-SOMETHING , DALLAS
First of all , what the fuck is on her head lmaooo ?!? It’s kinda like a bird’s nest that’s been doused in cigarette ash but weirdly I’m not mad about it... Wig aside , Asia doesn’t really give much away for me ; her personality isn’t standout in the video , nor is her look but for whatever reason I am highly intrigued by her. One of my favourite queens of all time is also a pageant queen from Dallas so I’ll be sure to see if Asia lives up to tradition.
BLAIR ST CLAIR , 22 , INDIANAPOLIS
She’s pretty but... not just pretty if that makes sense ? I feel like Blair has a lot more to offer than just blinding highlight and blonde wigs unlike previous contestants lol , but I can definitely see the other girls possibly underestimating Blair based on her “ cutesy “ appearance. Her potential and positive spirit alone puts her as one of my top picks for now.
DUSTY RAY BOTTOMS , 29 , NEW YORK CITY
I’m glad that Dusty is a proud bottom as that’s probably where she will be spending most of her time throughout the competition #SorryAboutIt . Nothing against her or her drag as I am actually a huge fan of both and would love for her to prove me wrong BUT .. I just don’t know if she’ll be able to keep up with the other girls in terms of fashion , humour and just overall personality. I am rooting for Miss Dusty with an open , yet realistic , mind . (she’s such a hot guy tho omg)
EUREKA , JOHNSON CITY
Now I have no shame in saying that I HATED Eureka on Season 9 , something about her was (for lack of a better expression) heavy. Every scene she was in was just depressed by ill-timed jokes and attitude to me. I don’t know if she popped a pill the same time she popped her knee lol but she is a whole new woman , and I’m so glad to see it ! She oozes fun and freedom in her Meet The Queens and whilst I’m not particularly rooting for her I am happy she’s here.
KALORIE KARBDASHIAN WILLIAMS , 27 , ALBUQUERQUE
I mean ... she’s definitely a drag queen ... I don’t know , for me she’s kind of the epitome of just being there , you know ? Not saying she’s bland or boring but she’s just there. Just like those kids in school that were just “ nice ” - they’re not bland , they’re not boring , they’re just nice.. Kalorie is just there and she’s just nice  (gorgeous smile tho , jealous)
KAMERON MICHAELS , 31 , NASHVILLE
Another girl that I’ve followed on Instagram for a minute now and I think that’s why I’m excited to see her on Season 10 ! She has a lot more personality than her Meet The Queens gives off and is also an extremely creative and talented makeup artist , defo one to watch I think.
MAYHEM MILLER , RIVERSIDE
She thinks she is “the fiercest bitch around” , and I’m happy for her to feel that way - whether I agree or not is another story lol. She is undeniably skilled , beautiful and deserving of her household name status but I just fear that spending so much time around Raven only gives Mayhem knowledge on how to come second .. twice (all tea , just a smidgen of shade hehe)
MIZ CRACKER , 33 , NEW YORK CITY
THIS IS MY BITCH OK !!! She for me is one of the best examples of how C.U.N.T can be displayed so equally within one queen and I am telling you now if she doesn’t take the crown its a case for the FBI , damn it ! I really don’t have much else to say apart from RIP to the rest.
MONET X CHANGE , 27 , THE BRONX
She sounds like Bob but thank the gay God she doesn’t dress like her ! Monet looks amazing ! Amongst some shitty promo looks her’s definitely stands out as the best. Her personality does just as well at standing out too ! You can just tell that she is a fun time and is going to be refreshing to watch. Whilst I don’t think she will be giving Cracker a run for her money personally I can definitely see her going far.
MONIQUE HEART , 31 , KANSAS CITY
Another one of the better promo looks , another one of the better personalities lol. She reminds me of the women in my family - strong , carefree , black women who are happy to take a couple minutes out of living their best lives , just to get you ALL the way together and remind you who the fuck they are. Although Monique wasn’t particularly sassy in her video you can just tell she has it in her to go awf and I really pray we see it .
VANESSA VANJIE MATEO , 25 , TAMPA
“ Ghetto girl from Miami meets stripper pole “
“ I get to be Beyonce for the people who can’t afford Beyonce “
“ Vanessa is a video hoe / twerkaholic “
Miss Vanjie is a girl after my own heart with all her ghetto fabulousness , ol’ girl is a mess in the best way possible. I am sold ! Get these cookies , I shall
THE VIXEN , 26 , CHICAGO
Let me just start off by saying burn the wig and the bag that it came in , thank you. She’s promising ! She says she really likes Tyra Sanchez and if she’s anything like Tyra she’s a hundred percent got a fan in me because I LIVE FOR A GOOD BITCH !! A good bitch has strong opinions , a reckless mouth , a fuck you mentality but enough talent to back it up. Whether or not The Vixen has the talent will be determined , whether or not she has better wigs will also be evaluated.
YUHUA HAMASAKI , 27 , NEW YORK CITY
Yuhua is excited that she’s on drag race. I am not.
JK , but here’s the tea .. am I appalled that they chose her to be on ? Not in the slightest. Am I jumping with joy that she’s on ? Again , not in the slightest - I’m indifferent. Much like Kalorie for me , Yuhua is just there but I feel like she will do more than Kal whilst she’s just there , ya dig ?
All in all the cast is pretty fucking lit. Regardless of my personal opinions each queen is obviously deserving of their spot on the show and I really do hope each of them get to show their best work on it too. These are just first impressions based mostly on the MTQ videos and I’m open for any of them to change , but as of right now my top six favourite queens would be
Miz Cracker
Vanessa Vanjie Mateo
Blair St Clair
Monique Heart
Kameron Michaels
The Vixen
As for who I’m predicting will be top six , that would be
Miz Cracker
Monet X Change
Aquaria
Asia O’Hara
Kameron Michaels
Monique Heart
I plan to do weekly reviews of the episodes when they start coming out , give this review a read and then read me if there’s anything you disagree with lmao

Mystery at Bayer Manor 2
Everyone starts to wake up, breakfast was served at 8:00 am each morning and everyone was expected to be down by 8.  Kym was getting ready and heard some commotion downstairs.  It sounded like Brittany screaming excitedly.  Kym rolls her eyes.  Suddenly there is a pounding at her door, Kym jumps.  She opens the door to find Lisle.   ”You have to come downstairs right now, there’s been a murder.” The way she said it she was trying to be so dramatic. Kym quickly ties her hair up and follows her down.
She sees the group of people around the body, who was Kelly.  She obviously wasn’t really dead, but still it was eerie.  Everyone was looking at the body and trying to get clues from the scene.  She could see Robert was really into this and looking at everything.  He seemed to keep most of it to himself, but some others were shouting out everything they saw.  “Look at her neck!” Brittany yells. “Robert, I think she was strangled, see the bruising.”  He nods his head in agreement with her. ”Kym come on get in there look for clues!” Lisle shouts dragging Kym closer to the group.  Robert looks up at her, she made eye contact with him and was so embarrassed.  Ugh why did she agree to do this again.  Then suddenly two assistants arrive and pick Kelly up and take her away.  Everyone is handed cards and a small notebook to record their information.
Kym’s card reads Kelly Dale has been murdered by someone in the house.  Do you know who it was, or are you the murderer?  Her autopsy will be available at 2:00 today in the mortuary. There was a little map showing the mortuary was in the basement.
Everyone is called for breakfast.  People are so excited and still talking about the first murder.  Ben makes an accusation, “Well Robert was the first to find the body, maybe he did it.”  Robert just laughs it off. After breakfast they are handed cards again, which read, There is a clue to the identity of the murderer hidden somewhere in the house (not in private bedrooms) which only 1 person can find.  Again people get so excited and run all over the house looking for the clue.  Everyone gets very suspicious when someone walks into a room they are already in.  Kym tries to avoid everyone and search for the clue.
At 2:00 people are already waiting at the entrance to the room marked Mortuary.  They funnel in and Robert is the first to take the report and reads it aloud for everyone. “Kelly Dale, 34, ligature marks from strangulation found on the neck. Yellow nylon fibers found on the skin around the neck. Toxicology report reveals no drugs, alcohol or poison in her system. Based on liver temperature and the onset of riggamortis estimated time of death is between midnight at 2:00 am.”
Everyone was writing down all the information.  Robert sets the report down and Dave immediately picks it up reading it again for himself. Robert jots down some notes and then leaves.  Kym finds the conversations funny, some people are quiet and some are grilling people for information.  Benjamin and Robert are discussing motive, the murder weapon, predictions, etc.  Tyler was asking everyone if they found the secret clue.  Some people said no, some were coy about it and Kym tried to play along and said she couldn’t tell him if she did.
After dinner everyone is in the living room. There’s some music playing. A few people are drinking. Lisle was off looking for clues, so Kym is sitting on the stairs alone just watching everyone. Robert walks up behind her and sits next to her. He leans over bumping his shoulder into hers, “Hey are you ok?” “Yea. I’m fine, this just isn’t really my thing.” “You know it’s more fun if you play along.” “I know, that’s what my friend said too.” “Ok. Well let’s see what you have in your notes so far.” Kym pulls out her notebook and Robert pulls out his. Kym opens her notebook and on one page is written Kelly dead strangulation yellow rope . That was it, nothing else. Robert busts out laughing. Everyone looks over at them Kym’s so embarrassed, but he does have a great laugh. Robert flips through his notebook which already has 11 pages filled. Kym sees notes on the house, the murder and a page for each of the guests. She saw her name, but didn’t see what he had written on that page. “Ok. So we know you’re not a cop,“ Robert laughs again bumping his shoulder into hers, “What do you do for your day job.” “I teach dance.” “Really?” Robert asks interested. “Yes. It’s a dance fitness studio with a bit of conditioning, stretching and strength training.” “Can you show me a dance?” Kym looks at him, “No,” she shakes her head. “Come on, teach me a dance.” Kym shakes her head. Robert stands up and takes Kym’s hand and pulls her up. Robert stands with his arms out like he wants to be in hold, “Ok show me what to do.” Kym laughs at him, he looks ridiculous standing there with his arms out. “Ok.” She pushes his arms down. “Take a step, left leg, then right, now three little steps, then back back and three steps. This is a cha cha. So step, step cha cha cha, step step cha cha cha.” Robert was watching her feet and legs and trying to mimic the steps. After a few minutes he asks, “Is that it, that’s the dance?” Kym laughs at him, “No there’s lock steps, hip rolls, chasses and then in closed or open position with your partner and all the holds with your hands.” “Damn, I thought I was doing a good job, apparently not,” Robert jokes. “Well you made me think I was doing a good job, so that makes you a good teacher.“ Kym blushes. "So where are you from? Originally because I know that is not a California accent.” Kym smiles, “Sydney. Australia.” It was nice to talk to Robert, but then they were interrupted. It was Kym’s turn to go make her prediction. Each guest needed to guess; murderer, motive and recount the clues that lead you to the guess after each murder. The person who had the most number of correct guesses would win a prize. Whoever had the worst guess could be the next victim. After her guess she ran into Lisle and they chatted for a bit before Kym went to bed.

Join us for a live performance by Clipping, who release their album There Existed an Addiction to Blood on 10/18 (via Sub Pop). Pre-order their CD and/or LP/LP+ on this page for entry.
The science-fiction visionary Octavia Butler once declared that “there is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns.” The aphorism could apply to any art form where the basic contours are fixed, but the appetite for innovation remains infinite.
