Budd Boetticher - Ride Lonesome (1959) Part of a really popular series of Westerns which paired director Boetticher with actor Randolph Scott, this is a particularly terse and economic western which is also pretty effective. Clocking in at something like 73 minutes it loses no time setting up the scenario and the characters, you get all that you need through the development of the story. This supreme economy really works in the favor of the film, the less you know about everyone the more they are able to surprise you, the less you expect from them, and here it's interesting to see how none of the characters is completely pure or evil, with the exception of the real bad guy (played in his type-cast best by Lee Van Cleef) who spends most of the time off screen only to show up for the showdown. Otherwise, even his contemptible brother who is being used as bait, is capable of humane acts, such as sparing the only woman in the film from witnessing a bunch of dead bodies. In the end the film makes sense, bandits want to be better, James Coburn does his acting debut, and tough guy Randolph Scott walks into the sunset having taken revenge. This film is a perfect distillation of the Western, not a fancy one, but if an alien was to come to earth and ask to quickly give them a paragon of the genre, this would be it. Complete with unfortunate characterizations of Indigenous people and brown-face. The economy, structure and straight story make this a little, less known nowadays, gem.
