The Spirit Molecule
Since ancient times, powerful hallucinogenic drugs like DMT — also known as the “Spirit Molecule” because of its capacity to cause profound visions and altered states of consciousness — have been incorporated into traditional shamanic rituals. "A spirit molecule also leads us to spiritual realms. These worlds usually are invisible to us and our instruments and are not accessible using our normal state of consciousness. However, just as likely as the theory that these worlds exist only in our minds is that they are, in reality, outside of us and freestanding. If we simply change our brain’s receiving abilities, we can apprehend and interact with them. Furthermore, keep in mind that a spirit molecule is not spiritual in and of itself. It is a tool, or a vehicle. Think of it as a tugboat, a chariot, a scout on horseback, something to which we can hitch our consciousness. It pulls us into worlds known only to itself. We need to hold on tight, and we must be prepared, for spiritual realms include both heaven and hell, both fantasy and nightmare. While the spirit molecule’s role may seem angelic, there is no guarantee it will not take us to the demonic.".... - Rick Strassman Rick Strassman, DMT (N, N-Dimethyltryptamine) in Research and Treatment. p&a@ 🎨   paintings and drawings from the psychedelic terminology series and the asylum series by Adam Sturch   thank you 👀

The Curious Case of Naturally Occurring DMT in the Human Brain
Tumblr media
N, N-dimethyltryptamine, more commonly referred to as DMT, is a powerful psychedelic drug, which are drugs with the potential to alter the user’s perception and cognitive functions, along with various bodily processes. Despite the widespread impact of DMT on the body and the drug’s cultural association with hallucinations, DMT is an extremely simple compound. The compound is naturally occurring in several animals, including the human body. Many questions remain, however, such as whether or not the brain produces DMT and what the chemical’s purpose is within the body.
Discussions about powerful, naturally occurring chemicals in the brain invariably lead back to the pineal gland, which has long been associated with altered states of consciousness. The pea-sized gland is located at the center of the brain. Its central position is underscored by the fact that most components of the brain come in pairs, yet there is just one pineal gland. Even early Egyptian and Greek thinkers described the gland as the seat of the human soul despite having a limited understanding of human anatomy.
One of the most prominent connections between DMT and the human brain was made by psychiatrist and psychedelic researcher Rick Strassman in his book DMT: The Spirit Molecule. His research initially focused on melatonin, the main product of the pineal gland, but he became fascinated with the impact of DMT on patients, who frequently described being transported to another place and seeing strange entities that felt strangely familiar. Their descriptions lined up with similar human experiences, such as near-death experiences, which Strassman theorized were caused by a sudden spike in DMT production.
Medical researchers did not pursue Strassman’s beliefs until 2013 when the University of Michigan’s Jimo Borjigin and Steven Barker uncovered DMT molecules in the pineal gland of a rat. Rats are often chosen as subjects for medical science experiments because their mammalian brains are very similar to the human brain. Researchers concluded that similar amounts of DMT would be found in a human’s pineal gland, yet that led to the next question: why did the rat’s pineal gland only contain trace amounts of the compound?
Professor David Nichols spoke on the findings in 2017 at the Breaking Convention conference. He pointed out that the human pineal gland would produce a few micrograms every 24 hours. Humans require at least 25 milligrams to begin feeling the drug’s psychedelic effects, leading Nichols to believe that DMT could not play a major role in near-death experiences or religious ceremonies over the centuries.
Borjigin returned to the subject in 2019 with several experiments. The major discovery was that removing the pineal gland from a brain did not change the DMT levels in any way. Researchers expanded the search for DMT to other parts of the brain, including the cerebral cortex. DMT was found in comparable levels to serotonin and dopamine, though this would still require an increase of about 600 percent to achieve a “DMT state of consciousness.” Tests on rats experiencing cardiac arrest showed DMT levels increased tenfold.
Borjigin pointed out that while the brains are similar, DMT levels could spike more notably in human brains during cardiac arrest and other situations. Nichols, meanwhile, notes that DMT could have completely different functions in rats and humans and that human DMT levels might not increase at all during cardiac arrest. As the mystery unfolds, researchers will focus on sourcing the enzymes that create DMT, as these parts of the body should also contain the highest concentrations of the compound.

DMT
DMT, or dimethyltryptamine, is a naturally occurring hallucinogenic substance that is known to many as "The Spirit Molecule". This title is derived from the writings of Dr. Rick Strassman, a psychiatrist whose seminal work sparked noteworthy societal interest in DMT.
DMT is released by the pineal gland, a structure at the center of the human brain. Centuries ago, the French philosopher Rene Descartes asserted that the pineal gland is the seat of the soul. This gland is located within a neural structure known as the epithalamus, which is located in the diencephalon.
DMT can be found in every ecosystem. It is found in plants and animals and can even be extracted from grass. The molecular formula for Dimethyltryptamine is C12H16N2. This means that for every molecule of DMT, there are twelve atoms of carbon, sixteen atoms of hydrogen, and two atoms of nitrogen.
DMT is released during the dream state and right before human death. There are different types of DMT, including 5-methoxy-dimethyltryptamine and N,N-DMT.

"Better Living Through Chemistry" - LSD, DMT and The Postmodern Worldview
By Blair Gelbond   2 comments
"Every society appears to have had a few mind-altering substances in its repertoire: some of these have been gentle modifiers of mood or energy; others radically transform our experience of personal and cosmic reality - our sense of Being itself. Many of these substances have been used at least since the beginning of written history - and most likely earlier.
Anthropologists tell us that there is nothing unusual about the ingestion of mind-altering chemicals - and that it is probably more the norm of human life than a deviation from it. They report that many societies we call "primitive" managed to utilize such drugs without having a "drug problem."
Without positing a linear cause and effect, the 1960's can also be labelled the beginning of the post-modern era, offering audacious critiques of the belief systems of the modern world. The post-modern worldview suggests that we live in a symbolic world, a social reality that we unconsciously construct together, and yet experience as an "objective" real world.
Thus, we live in a universe of "multiple realties," because different groups and languages construct different "stories" - or ways of interpreting life - generating a variety in one's sense of personal identity, time and space.
Fresh ideas about sanity, consciousness and objective truth and were enthusiastically embraced by the "counter-culture" and slowly began to enter the public milieu. The concept of a "socially-created reality" filtered into modern culture. Theodore Rozak characterized the events of the time as a revolt against the established culture, which he described as built on "the myth of objective consciousness."
In an upcoming series I hope to share the experiences of a number of intrepid explorers of "inner space," (some chemically-based - and others, who came to their realizations through meditation and other transformative methods). Among them will be Richard Alpert (Ram Dass), former professors of psychology at Harvard; Rick Strassman, M.D., author of DMT, The Spirit Molecule; also Christopher Bache, (a professor who taught for many years at Youngstown State University in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and received YSU's Distinguished Professor Award for excellence in teaching and research). His book - LSD and the Mind of the Universe - catalogues 71 of his experiences exploring higher consciousness."
"It is not surprising that, until very recently, many psychedelic drugs - including marijuana (a mild psychedelic) were made illegal. Individuals in possession of such substances, if convicted, were sent to prison."
