Locations of Container Use
To see and develop my knowledge of re-using containers across London and other parts of the UK, I decided to research other locations that containers have been re-used for other purposes whether for housing or community projects. This will also enable me to gain further images for my portfolio for this body of work. The list is shown below.
London
Pop Brixton
Magnificent Container - Hackney City Farm
Containerville
Box Park
Brighton
Richardson’s Yard
Cobbler's Thumb
Pop Brixton - By Carl Turner Architects
Pop Brixton is an original project that supports local jobs, training and enterprise.
It is a community initiative that has transformed a disused plot of land into a pioneering space that showcases the most exciting independent businesses from Brixton and Lambeth, providing a new destination that supports them to set up shop and share space, skills and ideas.
As well as providing the space local businesses need to thrive, we work with our members to make a positive difference in the community. We all invest our time and skills into charitable projects, we provide free space for community events of every kind, and we host regular open workshops ranging from kid's art classes to horticulture training in our community garden.
Pop Brixton is home to 53 independent businesses including restaurants, retailers, makers, street food traders, designers, digital start-ups, a community barbershop, a youth radio station and a number of social enterprises. All of the members are independents, most come from Brixton and Lambeth and many of them are start-ups entering their first permanent premises.
On location, they also have a community garden, Pop Farm. It is an urban growing project bringing a community garden into the heart of Brixton. Its aim is to make gardening more accessible to local people, educating, informing and sharing food growing knowledge in the community. Across our site, we have created a beautiful urban farm, growing decorative plants and fresh herbs, vegetables and other ingredients for use by local people, food businesses and Pop Brixton’s community of caterers. It also offers education and including professional programmes in horticulture, free workshops with local primary and secondary schools and open weekend workshops for the public to take part in.
Pop Brixton has been created from re-using containers and other sustainable materials such as planks of wood from building sites that are surplus. They have been used to create flower/plant beds, chairs and tables, and other items on site.

Magnificent Container - Hackney City Farm - By Carl Turner Architects
Hackney City Farm has been giving the local community the opportunity to experience farming right in the heart of the city. They offer children and adults the opportunity to get up close to a range of farmyard animals; see, smell and plant vegetables and other food plants; and learn new skills to live a healthier, happier life with a lower environmental impact.
As well as running our own courses and volunteering sessions, we are a home to various other social enterprises and community groups. We aim to be a centre for environmental improvement and a hub for projects for the improvement of the community and local environment.
Hackney City Farm was established in 1984 inspired by the success of the newly formed Kentish Town City Farm. Their aim was to give youngsters and local people the opportunity to experience farming. In 2011, Carl Turner Architects were approached by Hackney City Farm to create a studio from using a shipping container. Though small, the project demonstrates the power of true community engagement. Magnificent Revolution – a not-for-profit organisation teaching children about energy use with bike powered generators – had been given an £8,000 grant to create a small studio on Hackney City Farm in East London.

ContainerVille - Bethnal Green
ContainerVille is a home for start-ups and small businesses, consisting of 45 containers arranged over three floors and up-cycled into modern work spaces next to the Regents Canal.
Each container can accommodate up to six desks and is kitted out to function perfectly as a clean, modern work space with wifi, double glazing, heater, electricity and a kitchen unit. The whole site is protected with CCTV and gates which are locked at night - with 24 hour access for tenants.

Box Park - Shoreditch
Opened in 2011, Boxpark established itself in the heart of London’s Shoreditch demonstrating it was entirely possible to bring dining and fashion back to the street and provide fertile ground for independent and established brands to reach a large audience.
Entirely constructed out of refitted shipping containers, Boxpark utilises a unique position in being able to offer affordable and flexible leases for lifestyle brands, cafes, restaurants and galleries to trade and succeed. After 5 successful years in Shoreditch, Boxpark is taking the leap south of the river into Croydon to premiere the first food and beverage only site, with over 200 events planned each year.
Richardson’s Yard, Brighton
Richardson's Yard, created by QED Sustainable Urban Development Ltd, opened its gates to residents on 9 December 2013. The scheme, which uses refurbished shipping containers as moveable building blocks, provides 36 self-contained accommodation units. Work commenced in late August 2013 and was complete ready for occupation 14 weeks later. The development was let on completion to Brighton Housing Trust where it is now used to house the homeless.
An independent report into the satisfaction of residents staying at the Richardson's Yard site found 94% of people felt the accommodation was an improvement on where they lived before - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-28035388

Cobbler’s Thumb, Brighton
The Cobbler's Thumb Development, also created by QED Sustainable Urban Development Ltd opened its gates in December 2014. It took just 10 weeks to complete the development of 8 small business units, which range from 5 to 28 square metres. Restricted access on site called for strict phasing and co-ordination of deliveries. The scheme, which is fully moveable, has a temporary 5 year planning consent.
It has proved very popular locally and was fully occupied within 2 weeks with a lengthy waiting list. The development offers a range of unit sizes, a diverse set of tenants and communal kitchen and toilet facilities and allows businesses the opportunity to access dynamic, flexible and adaptive spaces.
"Cobbler’s Thumb responds to Brighton & Hove's need for more affordable commercial space,” comments Ross Gilbert managing director QED. "This ‘meanwhile use’ or ‘interim' development has provided space for a wide variety of businesses to thrive and many say they benefit from the unique cache their workspaces offer. Had the site remained fallow until a suitable use could be agreed, none of this would have been possible".
Currently Cobbler's Thumb is home to a family-owned start-up fashion brand, a carpenter, a potter, a 3D printer, a local renewable energy co-operative, a music producer and a fitness instructor.
