Review: Fingersmith (2002) by Sarah Waters

Raised in one of Victorian London's worst slums in the house of petty thieves, stolen-goods peddlers, and baby-farmers, Susan Trinder only ever hoped to become a smuggler's sweetheart and have a baby-farm of her own. Her greatest wish is to some day repay her adoptive mother, Mrs Sucksby for raising her with love and tenderness as her own daugher. Then, one cold January night a conman Richard Rivers—alias Gentleman—comes with a proposal for Sue: to play a wing-woman in his scheme to seduce and defraud a youngheiress Maud Lilly, for whose eccentric uncle Gentleman had been doing a bit of work on the side. With the promise of a share in Maud's vast fortune, enough to repay Mrs Sucksby for her love and kindness, the good-natured Sue cannot possibly refuse But then Sue meets Maud, and Maud is sweeter and kinder than anyone had ever been to Sue, save Mrs Sucksby!—and the little thief's conviction begins to waver.

FINAL RESULT: The majority of voters haven’t read this book, but enjoyed this excerpt. 😊
Fingersmith is a 2002 historical crime novel set in Victorian-era Britain by Sarah Waters. From Wikipedia: “The novel follows Sue Trinder, an orphan raised in "a Fagin-like den of thieves" by her adoptive mother, Mrs Sucksby, is sent to help Richard "Gentleman" Rivers seduce a wealthy heiress. Posing as a maid, Sue is to gain the trust of the lady, Maud Lilly, and eventually persuade her to elope with Gentleman. Once they are married, Gentleman plans to commit Maud to a madhouse and claim her fortune for himself.
The book is notable for its eroticism and depiction of pornography. Reviewers have praised Waters' negotiation of sexual themes; a review from The Guardian described it as "erotic and unnerving", while The New York Times praised its "illicit undertow". Literary critics have also focused on the novel's sexual themes, and identified its engagement with debates surrounding feminism and pornography. In Fingersmith, Waters uses her depiction of lesbian love between Maud and Sue to challenge a variety of hetero-patriarchal norms, and respond to different feminist arguments about pornography. Outside of discussions about sexuality, the struggles that Maud and Sue both face as women in Victorian society, and their often exploitative relationships with men are also of interest to feminist critics. The novel's title is likely intended to reflect the erotic themes of the novel. Fingersmith is an archaic term for a petty thief, but given the content of the novel, it can also be assumed to have intentionally sexual connotations.
Upon release, Fingersmith was generally well-received among the British press. According to Book Marks, based on mostly American publications, the book received a "positive" consensus, based on five critic reviews: one "rave", three "positive", and one "mixed". Fingersmith was shortlisted for the Orange Prize and the Man Booker Prize, and was the winner of the CWA Historical Dagger for Historical Crime Fiction.
Fingersmith has been adapted several times, but its most famous adaptation is likely the 2016 South Korean film The Handmaiden, with the setting changed from Victorian era Britain to Korea under Japanese colonial rule. At the 71st British Academy Film Awards, the film won the category of Best Film Not in the English Language.”
Do you know which book this is from?
Please reblog the polls, but KEEP IT SPOILER-FREE to make people read the excerpt with an open mind 💖📚 Title and author will be revealed after the poll's conclusion.

It would be great to see more West End people here. Mazz would love to see Richard Trinder and Ramin Karimloo, both of who she has worked with recently.
Yes, yes! We'd love to have them here!

Standalone Book Recommendations
the following books do not have *direct* sequels and are not part of long-standing series. ie. they can be read on their own without having to commit to reading multiple sequels or prequels.
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. In 1860s London, orphan Sue Trinder, daughter of a murderess, is raised by the tough but kindly Mrs. Sucksby and her adoptive family of thieves. When a con man known as the Gentleman offers Sue the chance of a lifetime to change her fortune forever, she takes it, even if it means posing as a lady’s maid and tricking an innocent young heiress, Maud, into a life of imprisonment in an asylum. However, Maud, her eccentric bibliophile uncle, and their lonely estate of Briar are not quite what they seem, and Sue quickly finds herself in over her head, battling between her pragmatism and her growing feelings for her target.
Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates. Dreamy and romantic young Norma Jeane Baker dreams of true love and a life on the silver screen, much like her erratic mother Gladys. After Gladys is institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital, Norma Jeane is shuffled from orphanage to foster home and quickly taught that life is not a fairy tale, and even beautiful and kind princesses rarely get their just rewards. After marrying at age 16 to avoid returning to the orphanage, Norma Jeane begins work as a model while her husband serves overseas in World War II, and resolves to make a star of herself. The path she takes will catapult her from one doomed romance to another, nearly crush her soul, and make her a worldwide sensation- not as herself, but as bottle blonde flirt Marilyn Monroe.
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Clever young socialite Noemi wants nothing more than to pursue a university education and break a few hearts while she’s at it. When her father asks her to pay a visit to her cousin, who has married into a reclusive family of Englishmen and begun to send mysterious, alarming letters begging for help, Noemi reluctantly agrees. At High Place she finds that her cousin’s in-laws are more than just high-class snobs; their very house itself seems to be imparting sinister messages in her dreams, and her cousin is unrecognizable. Determined to get to the bottom of this mystery, Noemi resolves to discover the secrets of High Place, but learns that High Place is just as interested in dissecting her as she is it.
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong. Raised by his scarred and often violent mother and his mentally ill grandmother, Little Dog begins to recount his childhood in Connecticut and unpack the trauma inflicted on his family by the war in Vietnam and their subsequent flight to America. As he ages into a young man, Little Dog begins a romance with his best friend Trevor, and begins to understand the snare of addiction, sexuality, and masculinity that has both of them in its grips.
Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson. A surreal tale of magical realism in 17th century London, Sexing the Cherry contains many stories within the frame story, which is that of a massive woman accompanied by dogs, and her adoptive son Jordan, taken from the river as an infant. Dog Woman and Jordan journey through many fairy tales, including that of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, who wish to rewrite their myth.
The Corinthian by Georgette Heyer. Faced with the prospect of a loveless marriage, Sir Richard Wyndham goes out for one last night of drunken revelry. Along the way he meets Penelope Creed, who is also fleeing an arranged match of her own. The two conspire to get Penelope back to her countryside village, where she plans to elope with her childhood sweetheart. Penelope poses as Richard’s young cousin, but their plot is complicated by thieves, murder, and an overturned stagecoach.
Here Lies Arthur by Philip Reeve. Gwyna is nothing and no one- a serf, a slave, an orphan. By sheer chance she is brought into the service of the bard Myrddin, who travels alongside the young warlord Arthur, who hopes to unite Britain under his reign. From Myrddin, Gwyn learns they can be whatever they choose to be- even if that means shedding identities the way a snake sheds its skin. Along the way, he forges his own destiny- as a wizard’s apprentice, a page boy, a queen’s handmaiden, and finally, the one who will make Arthur the man into Arthur the legend.
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Richard Mayhew is new to London, but already worn out by his shallow life in finance. One fateful night, he breaks dinner plans to come to the aid of an injured homeless girl. For this act of kindness, he is consigned to Neverwhere, an alternate reality where dangers lurk down every darkened alley, and myths and goddesses walk the streets of a city trapped in every time and place at once. Richard must decide whether he wishes to return to his normal existence, or make an uncertain home for himself among the exiles and misfits of Neverwhere- if he can survive that long.

1 – Nunca fui Santa (But I’m a cheerleader - 1999)
3 – Imagine eu e você (Imagine me and you – 2005)
5 – Elena Undone (Elena Undone – 2010)
6 – Beije-me (Kyss Mig – 2011)
8 – Livrando a Cara (Saving Face – 2004)
10 – A Criada (The Handmaiden – 2016)

Queer Movie Review #13: Fingersmith
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b35fb6745ab961916a6175ac53ededd3/d461418d29333619-56/s400x600/314eed567dbd41421b824d5d21329ed7ff61299a.jpg)
I think this is another film (okay, technically it's a two-episode miniseries, but we all know British television is basically a montage of movies aired on television) I found through a library search? I think I've also heard of the book it was based on as well as The Handmaiden. So maybe I know this film through Tumblr? Wherever I found it, Fingersmith, is a fun historical romance with some good twists.
Fingersmith tells the story of a street urchin, Sue Trinder (Sally Hawkins), who helps her flatmate conartist, Richard Rivers (Rupert Evans) scam heiress Maid Lilly (Elaine Cassidy.) But not all is what it seems, and when you are a conartist--you really can't trust anyone to be who they say they are.
Holy plot twists, Batman! In what would otherwise appear a very low-budget production--the crafted screenplay holds it together. I definitely did not see those twists coming! And I've seen enough movies to know when a false climax (heh) has happened.
Fingersmith also boasts a fantastic cast. Harry Potter fans might enjoy, or fear the appearance of Imelda Staunton, who played Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter. And without spoiling too much, this actress has a type. I enjoyed each actor's performance--no one seemed too under or overstated.
Really, the only thing that gives this away as a made-for-TV movie, is the cinematography. But it works? In that late 90s, early 00s sort of way? It's not too distracting.
Would I recommend this movie? Why not? Solid entertainment, especially if you like period pieces.

Kerry Ellis, Gina Murray, Richard Trinder or any other West End stars for Mazz, anyone from Station 19 for Brett, Matthew Macfadyen, David Oyelowo for Keeley and Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey or anyone from Game Of Thrones for Nikolaj.
Bring them all to us!!

i am honest i always found Arben Bajraktaraj as Antonin Dolohov attractive, one of the few attractive Death Eaters. Same goes for Richard Trinder as Augustus Rookwood.
