196. Madrid, 1966.

The Fallen Angel
Built in 1877 by Spanish sculptor Ricardo Bellver, The Fallen Angel is one of the most controversial monuments in Spain, and arguably the only public statue in the world dedicated to the devil himself.
Inspired by John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, the remarkable work of art depicts Lucifer falling from Heaven, being especially intriguing as it rises 666m above the sea level.

Masterpiece of Ricardo Bellver (Spanish, 1845 - 1924) The monument of the Fallen Angel is a fountain located in the Buen Retiro Park in Madrid, Spain. On a pedestal with figures of devils on each side gripping fishes, lizards and snakes, the monument is 7 meters high but the statue itself is 2.65 meters and lies at 666 meters above sea level at the center of a roundabout named after the statue, that also gives its name to an entrance of the beautiful park. His statue, inspired by verses from Paradise Lost of John Milton, Bellver submitted to the 1877 edition of the Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes where it received the first prize. The state acquired the work and presented it to the 1878 Exposition Universelle. Since only works in marble and bronze were accepted, the statue was cast in bronze at this occasion and the plaster original destroyed.
