My Review of Piacevole: My Italian Cooking
High-schooler Morina Nanase has begun working as a part-timer in an Italian restaurant, Trattoria Festa. As she encounters various quirky co-workers, such as their manager, a drunken hostess, the child prodigy chef Maro Kitahara, and so many unique cuisines, she begins to grow into her role as waitress. BETWEEN THE SUB AND SOON TO BE DUB: I honestly don’t expect this anime to be picked up by anything. A lot of animes that are only 4 minutes long tend to get looked over (unless they have a strong pull like Hetalia or Idolm@ster). In the meantime, Crunchyroll will still carry this. While most of the cast I’ve never heard before (with the exception of Yoko Hikasa), I’m unsure what to think as it almost feels like every character is on fast-forward all the time. Because of this, it really feels like such a turn-off. There are a lot of moments where that is uncalled for. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from. *Morina is played by Sayaka Senbongi *Maro is played by Yuki Yonai *Ruri is played by Yoko Hikasa (known for Mio on K-ON, Rias on High School DxD, Izumi on Working!!, Satan on Umineko, Yukinokouji on Inu x Boku SS, Young Rei on Free!, and singer to songs on Attack on Titan, K-ON, and Hayate) *Konno is played by Youhei Azakami *Oreki is played by Taku Yashiro FAVORITE CHARACTER: Given the length of this series in general, I couldn’t really find a character that stood out as a favorite of mine. So let’s move on!
DISLIKED CHARACTER: In the earlier episodes, I really hated Sara! And most of this stems from the fact that she finds Italian food gross. And the other is because…I don’t know, I hate annoying kids? That’s a good reason! But I waver since she kinda became less annoying near the end. I guess you can thank Morina for that. SHIPPING: I don’t even know what to put here. I want to think Maro has a thing for Morina. But then again, the age difference! This kid is literal grade-schooler and Morina is in high school (I think). But then I see things between Maro and Sara that make me think maybe. But then again, not much to go on there! Shipping is a bust! ENDING: As indicated in many of the episodes, Maro is really dedicated to the restaurant. Despite his age, he’s dedicated to being a great cook, perhaps surpassing his father one day. This is why you’ll find him at the restaurant more than at school! And so this final episode we get a little tension between Maro and Oreki. Because why does Oreki work at an Italian Trattoria if he can’t cook? Truth is, Oreki knows how to cook, but he can’t do it anymore due to tendinitis/carpal tunnel in both hands. And this came from overdoing it when he was younger. So he basically teaches Maro to slow it down. Crap, I really wanted to like this anime. I had high hopes that this would be like if the Aldini brothers from Shokugeki no Soma got their own show. But alas, that was not the case. One giant complaint was the pace of everyone speaking. It was like every character was put through the fast-forward button and it was so annoying. Some of the characters were just bland and didn’t really offer much to the main story. But one thing that was cute was that in each episode they made one special Italian dish during the episode or it would a major part of the episode. Given my background, I do enjoy seeing what dish they talk about or make. Each episode is different so sometimes there'd be pasta and other times it'd be an eggplant dish, tiramisu, or caprese. Sorry to say this but, no recommendation from me. I know I have a nasty prejudice against animes that are only 4 minutes long, but this one is just a no-go from me. It wasn’t insultingly bad or skipped around major points of the story, it was just flat and boring. If you do find an allure to this, then by all means go to Crunchyroll (while they still have it) and give it a go. They have both the series available to watch and the manga as well to read.
