1) R & B

- Known as Rhythm and Blue.

- A genre of popular music originated in African American communities in 1940s.

- Combines elements of rhythm and blues, pop, soul, funk, hip-hop and electronic.

- “urbane, rocking, jazz-based music witha heavy, insistent beat”

- The genre of music usually encapsulates African - American experience of pain and quest for freedom and joy as well as triumphs and failures in terms of relationship, economies, and aspirations.

- The “Rhythm & Blues” term was created to replace the designation “race music,” which until then was the standard catch-all phrase used in reference to most music made by blacks at the time. After the “race music” term was deemed offensive, Billboard began using the Rhythm & Blues name that Wexler created.

- The meaning behind the name is this: the “rhythm” part comes from the music’s typical dependence on four-beat measures or bars and the liberal use of a backbeat, in which the second and fourth beats are accented in each measure. And the “blues” portion comes from the lyrics and melodies of the songs, which were often sad, or ‘blue’, especially during the music’s emergence in the World War II era. Over time the name was shortened to R&B as a matter of convenience.

2) C - POP

- Known as Chinese popular music (usually artist from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan).

- 3 main subgenres (Cantopop, Mandopop and Hokkien pop).

- Can be used as an umbrella term to cover R&B, Chinese Rock (diverged in the early 1990s, Ballads, Chinese Hiphop and Chinese ambient music.

- The first Chinese pop music was regarded around 1927 “The Drizzle” composed by Li Jinhui and sung by his daughter Li Minghui.
