Today is the day I share with you a book illustrated by one of my favourite illustrators and also a very well known author (with a not so well known story). The Hunting of the Snark is a funny and silly story set in verse by the exceptional writer Lewis Carroll. It’s not as well known as Alice in Wonderland but it has the same feel to it. Both silly and absurd, even nonsensical at times, this book appeals to children and the child in us all. It follows a rather mismatched crew taking a trip across the sea in search of the legendary Snark with a hope of capturing. What really sets this book apart is the amazing illustrations which also help to make sense of the verses as they can sometimes be quite complex. Chris Riddell, the illustrator, has done such an amazing job of depicting all the characters and conveying their emotions at different stages of the story. Some drawings in black and white and some in colour, it really makes this book a joy to read. A much treasured book in my collection and a wonderful discovery.
