Six years ago today "The Biggest Independent Wrestling Show Ever" was presented as the inaugural "All In" took place at the Sears Centre Arena in the Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates, Illinois!

The success of the event led to the formation of All Elite Wrestling in January 2019! Over 11,000 fans attended the event.

In the main event "The Golden Elite" Kota Ibushi and The Young Bucks defeated Bandido, Rey Fénix & Rey Mysterio!

Kazuchika Okada defeated Marty Scurll

Kenny Omega defeated Penta El Zero

Ring of Honor World Champion Jay Lethal defeated Flip Gordon. Lethal was using his Black Machismo gimmick and was seconded by Lanny Poffo.

Hangman Page defeated Joey Janela in a Chicago Street Fight

Cody Rhodes defeated Nick Aldis to win the NWA Title!

Tessa Blanchard defeated Dr. Britt Baker, Chelsea Green, and Madison Rayne in a Four Corners Survival Match!

All In 2018

So, with Max airing the early years of AEW, now is the perfect time to start a re-watch of AEW. First though, a quick switch to ROH Honor Club to watch the 2018 All In – the beginning of All Elite Wrestling.

All In (2018)

Here we go…

MJF vs Matt Cross. A fine opening match. It’s weird seeing MJF eat the pin considering how big a star he would become in AEW.

Sean Mooney interviews Nick Aldis.

Christopher Daniel (accompanied by SCU teammates Frankie Kazarian & Scorpio Sky) vs Steve Amell (accompanied by Josh Segarra). Jerry Lynn is the special guest referee. John Mayer is at ringside. Is John Mayer a wrestling fan? Good match considering one of the participants is a non-wrestler. I respect Steve’s love of wrestling.

Tenille Dashwood and Mandy Leon join the commentary booth for the next match, a 4-way involving Chelsea Green, Britt Baker, Madison Rayne, and Tessa Blanchard.

Tully Blanchard and Magnum TA are ringside.

Impact provided ¾ of the talent for this match.

Chelsea is introduced as the “Hot Mess”, and yep, that would be an accurate description.

Tessa is the first person to appear on the card who sunk their career due to their own actions. Don’t worry, she’ll have company as the night progresses.

Great match that the crowd popped for. Chelsea was a blast to watch. Tessa has talent and if she wasn’t such an egotistical, racist bully she would have progressed much farther in her career.

Nick Aldis vs Cody Rhodes for the NWA World championship. Brett Tarring joins the commentary team for the match. Earl Hepbner

Cody is accompanied by Brandi, Phaoroah, Diamond Dallas Page, Tommy Dreamer, and Glacier.

Brandi was styling this night.

Earl Hebner is the referee.

Nick Aldis is accompanied by Jeff Jarrett, Tim Storm, and Sean Davari.

Cody’s team (minus Brandi) came out in track suits. Nick’s team came out in actual business suits. In the war of style, Nick’s team won.

DDP gets the old-timer pop when he diamond cuts Davari.

Brandi shields Cody’s unconscious body and receives a top rope elbow drop from Aldis for her troubles.

Match was okay. I’m not a big Cody fan. Highlights were DDP and Brandi.

Joey Janella with Penelope Ford vs Hangman Adam Page.

The commentators mention that Page admitted to killing Joey Ryan in the press conference but I’m “Team Hangman Did Nothing Wrong” so I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.

The middle of the match turns into Hangman vs Penelope. My favorite part of the match – Penelope was awesome, and Hangman sold for her big time.

Janela eats a wicked powerbomb off the ramp through a table. Ouch!

People scold Hangman for the arson of Swerve’s house but the commentators consistently throughout the match remark on Hangman’s murder of Joey Ryan.

I think we need to realize that Adam has always been unbalanced.

Joey Ryan’s part in All In – returning from “death”, accompanied by penis druids, has been removed from the pay per view broadcast. Fine with me. I never liked Joey Ryan’s gimmick and that was before the Speaking Out allegations.

Joey Ryan and Flip Gordon join Tessa in the “Idiots Who Sunk Their Own Career” club.

Jay “Black Machismo” Lethal, accompanied by Lanny Poffo vs Flip Gordon, accompanied by Brandi Rhodes for the Ring of Honor World Championship. Ring of Honor ambassador Cary Silkin presents the title.

Jay’s in full-on Randy mode and keeps interacting with Brandi like she’s Miss Elizabeth.

 All In was about the future of wrestling but I love the nods to the past: Sean Mooney, Earl Hebner, Cody and Nick’s support team, Lanny Poffo, Cary Silkin, Jay’s Black Machismo gimmick. Little touches that homage the past but not at the cost of the present-day talent.

Bully Ray attacks both Flip, Lethal, and Lanny. Colt Cabana makes the rescue, and the trio put Bully through a table. Fun match.

Penta El Zero vs Kenny Omega in their first singles match. Great match, as always when these two meet in the ring.

The arena goes dark…the lights come back up…Penta rises from the mat but it’s clearly a different Penta – he attacks Omega and reveals himself to be Chris Jericho!

This is before everyone was tired of Jericho (and his politics) so his surprise appearance drew a big pop!

Okada vs Marty Scurll is up next. Scurll is another member of “I sunk my own career” club.  Tiger Hattori is the ref for the match. We have a BTE skit with Marty and the finger-pointing critics – if you watched BTE at the time, they were the “Now, Arthur” guys.

I had forgotten that Okada was in his red-haired breakdown era until he made his appearance.

Okada wins, as he should.

The Young Bucks & Kota Ibushi vs Bandidn, Rey Fenix, and Rey Mysterio.

Rey is cosplaying as Wolverine tonight.

I can hear the Young Bucks’ critics from my house: This is nothing but a high spot-fest!” And it is but that is what I want from the wrestlers involved in this match. If a match has the Young Bucks, Kota, Fenix, Rey, and Bandido in it and I am not seeing a rapid pace with amazing high spots, I would be extremely disappointed.

Kota and the Buck win in a great match.

Besides the whole wrestlers should unionize thing would folks like John Cena and the Rock cause a problem with the SAG if they popped up on WWE while the strike was going on?  It’s non-union but actors already show up on wrestling programs so I know that’s not an issue, but it just feels like doing performance work while you’re not supposed to be might be frowned on

Stephen Amell, who’s a friend of Cody Rhodes, was supposed to be on next week’s Raw, supposedly to promote something since I know that isn’t allowed, so that excuse is out  at least

ʙʀᴀᴠᴇ ɴᴇᴡ ᴏʟʏᴍᴘᴜꜱ : ᴀ 21+ ᴍᴏᴅᴇʀɴ ɢʀᴇᴇᴋ ᴍʏᴛʜᴏʟᴏɢʏ ᴅɪꜱᴄᴏʀᴅ ʀᴏʟᴇᴘʟᴀʏ. athens, new york: an island city, all trees and marble, glass and steel and highrises set against an ocean skyline. bustling and loud, crowded, but not without a bizarre sense that it must have sprung up overnight, somehow, when surely it must have always been here, no? on a clear night, you might even be able to see the lights of its more famous cousin, new york city, across the water…if you squint hard enough. it may not get as much attention as the shiny apple across the hudson, but those not so blinded by the lights must certainly have been coming here for years. is there something in the water here, too? no one leaves, not in any meaningful way anyway. feels like it has a special way of pulling you back in, if you try. they, that is anyone who was anyone or paid even an iota of attention to the evening news, called him the minotaur. the media does love a catchy nom de guerre, doesn’t it? sells newspapers like hotcakes in the morning. ambrosia, whether it’s the latest designer drug trend or the latest pestilence sweeping the streets of athens, just depends on how tightly you clutch your pearls on sundays. must infuriate the police, don’t it? that without fail, by the time they arrive to any crime scene at all, all that’s left is the heap of little cream-coloured business cards, the red lines of a labyrinthine logo more taunting than they are helpful. between an epidemic of pearlescent powder, neatly parceled out in small plastic baggies, a tide of crimson bull graffiti, casinos and bordellos and the nightlife (oh my!), it’s no small wonder they call this an atlantic sin city. it’s a vice eat dog world, ain’t it? and anyone who calls athens home is just living in it. powerless, with no memory of their past lives, what's a god gotta do to survive?

Mary stared towards Becky in a rather incredulous manner, the tattoo artist crossed her arms and stood at her full height while they continued away from the curtain that had led down the ramp all the way to the ring.

“He was still up on the top rope when you came barrelin’ down the ramp like your boots were on fire, hopped down when the crowd started cheerin’ and he saw it was you. Pretty damn sure you bit through his lip during that congratulatory kiss you gave him for winnin’ that match.” She scoffed playfully as they walked, “And now he's on the road to wrestlemania — long road, all the way in April.” 

The he she's talking about here happens to be none other than Cody Rhodes, who up until now was slightly a stranger to her but Becky promised she'd introduce them. “I ever tell you that I first learned who he was as Stardust when he had that match at SummerSlam against Neville and Stephen Amell.” She's never said that outloud but now Becky's been her best friend for the last seven years. “Yes, I'm admitting it right now — I watched Arrow because I love comics. Batman and Green Arrow are my personal favorites, at least out of the male characters anyway.” Now she cleared her throat and skipped a step, “ — Oh how thirteen or fourteen year old me would have been crying and shaking from excitement if she ever once could fathom walkin’ around backstage like this.”

One look at Mary and Becky would just see how starstruck she looks, she's been mostly quiet while they were watching some of the Rumble from up in the suite.

Event Review-ALL IN (9-1-2018)

Company: N/A (Cody Rhodes & The Young Bucks in cooperation with Ring of Honor)

Overview: Despite how stacked & star-studded this card is, I was more excited to hear that this was even happening than for what I may see on the show. Cody Rhodes & The Young Bucks are not bookers, they are wrestlers. They are used to being the ones getting booked as opposed to creating the show from top to bottom. This is the first & last ALL IN show..promotions like WWE, NJPW, ROH, etc. have massive legacies behind them.  In execution this was a decent show. It had a very "sports entertainment" vibe without pointless "swerves" and attempts at humor that didn't work. The things that were supposed to get massive pops like the Resurrection of Joey Ryan, Ibushi facing off with Rey Mysterio, Jericho replacing Pentagon and attacking Kenny, Cody winning the NWA title etc. hit the mark as intended. The show had it's weak points BUT since we now know this collective took their talents to help build AEW, we know they went back to the drawing board and learned alot from this show.

POSITIVE NOTES ---------------------

The Pro Wrestling nostalgia was thick at this show with the appearance of Road Warrior Animal, Tommy Dreamer , Diamond Dallas Page, Tully Blanchard & Magnum T.A. and also with some of the spots in the matches..particularly the Jay Lethal/Flip Gordon match.

Jordynne Grace's spots with Brian Cage were great because they were believable unlike what we saw when Cage faced Tessa Blanchard in WrestleCircus. Jordynne is known for her strength and I was glad to see her in this competition because a win for her could have been huge. Imagine Jordynne Grace vs. Jay Lethal for the Ring of Honor Heavyweight Championship at the first ALL IN...would have been big for women's wrestling.

The reveal of Flip Gordon participating in the show and winning the Battle Royale was a necessary feel good moment for the show.

For a seemingly random singles match between two guys I don't really watch all that much...Cross vs. MJF was a good opener. It gave me high hopes for the rest of the show.

I've seen all the women in the Four Corner's match compete before and i'm usually unimpressed with their singles matches but together put up something that stood out as a highlight of the show and didn't disappoint.

Aldis vs. Cody had that big match feel. I wasn't thrilled with the finish, I would have liked for Cody to have won with the Cross Rhodes but it didn't hurt the match.

Aside from when Neville was champ in the WWE for the Cruiserweight Division, Pre-Show matches just aren't this good. The Opening Tag Match and the Over-the-Budget Battle Royal was exceptional for free content. That may have been the best Battle Royal I've seen since like the early or mid 2000's.

I'm not a fan of Joey Ryan's "dick wresting" gimmick, BUT they've been building the story between him and Page for months and the conclusion of that with Joey's resurrection and Penelope Ford revealing the boots and the guys in the "Dick Druid" costumes accompanying Joey to the ring...it all just worked.

I think it's understated how much Brandi Rhodes brings to the table especially in regards to Cody's matches.

Penta El Zero is quickly becoming one of my favorite wrestlers of this era. Not only is he just a good all-round wrestler but even without saying anything, you can tell he has a great handle on his character.  He has a very Minoru Suzuki aura of intimidation about him as well as a Hayabusa "masked wrestler with no regard for human safety" type of a feel too. There were parts of this match where I thought Kenny may be injured for real.

Jericho showing up in the Penta costume was unexpected.

NEUTRAL NOTES & INTERESTING DETAILS ---------------------------------------------------

The exchange between Tenille Dashwood (formerly known as Emma in the WWE) & Mandy Leon toward the end of the women's match was so awkward.

-The whole Macho Man vs. Hulk Hogan dynamic between Jay Lethal and Flip Gordon was a little much. It didn't completely ruin the match, it was fine, the crowd was really into it but Lethal is the champ now and I just want to see great defenses, especially when he's in the ring with a guy like Flip who is so gifted in the ring.

Marty & Okada had the typical Marty and Okada matches.  Everything was exactly as I expected to be, nothing special here, but props to The Villain for being able to hold his own with perhaps the greatest wrestler in the world.

The Tag Match being the last match didn't really make sense to me because there were no real stakes. It was a good match but it didn't really offer much to be excited about as far as the conclusion.

NEGATIVE NOTES -----------------------

As good as Christopher Daniels still is at this point in his career, he couldn't carry Stephen Amell to anything decent. There were some very Shane Mcmahon-esque spots in the match, almost seemingly ripped right of PPV battles we've seen from Shane, and I can't get excited by a guy who plays a superhero doing it when a 45 year old business man has already done these things and better.

Overall Rating= C+ GOOD FIRST ATTEMPT
