A friend of mine convinced me to make a playlist for Rho. Though initially unsure I proceeded to spend 5 hours curating 12 songs to follow her narrative arc, and then another 7 hours drawing album covers for each of the three "Acts"

Hello Future! As Per Chicken-Biscuit-Casserole mans instructions, this comes out at 4:13 tomorrow. If it can get that exact... I have no clue. Anyways, Here's my second drawing of Rho!

Rocs live entirely in space, and so suffer from many degenerative bone diseases because of the lack of gravity. This makes cybernetics necessary to their survival. Rho ended up losing her lower legs and a lot of her ribcage by the time she was developed enough to safely get them, and so the modifications are much heavier in those areas.

A good friend of mine complained they were not avian enough- and to that I must concede, yeah totally. Rocs are really shitty at being birds. No wings, no beaks, a sad excuse for digitigrade legs, truly they dropped the ball on the bird front.

I've regained count, my mind is still MIA though. Ima justt Just brain dump more Roc Lore. A whole bunch why not.

The Rocs are a species of Nomadic alien that can be found throughout the galaxy. There are five flocks: The Doran, Roman, Kalan, Rhode, and Nokon. Each is composed of several dozen Nests: these ancient, patchwork ships which have been maintained through the centuries by its inhabitants. Each Nest is a family group of 30~ individuals. Rho is of the Erl nest, and Doran flock, which mostly wander around the edges of the Alternian Empire and its neighbors.

Rocs are known to be fucking cracked at engineering, and for good reason. They live in their ships full time after all, with hundreds of generations of experience keeping them repaired with limited resources. And thats not to mention the cybernetics that keep them alive. Any Roc that survives into adult hood is going to know their way around a workshop.

It's also how they make their income- they're highly skilled artisans operating in the middle of nowhere, even if they can't charge very much for their services there will always be demand. Additionally, they take salvage work whenever they can, picking the wreckage of merchant ships and military vessels for anything they can sell on.

No one really knows where they come from, except that they were somehow in space before any other civilization. According to them, they were exiled by Tevah, a nature goddess, and cursed to rot away.

However, I can offer you a peak behind the curtain ;) The Rocs evolved on a death world. All deserts and mountains and monsters. The brutality of the environment made them prioritize survival at all costs- though, the planet was also extremely resource rich, which led them to develop advanced technology very early on.

It didn't take long for them to destroy themselves, between their runaway industrialization, their constant wars, and an environment which was already out for their asses, they didn't stand much of a chance. The only reason they aren't extinct is because of a popular punishment for religious heretics: which was sealing them into ships and launching them into deep space.

Turns out, at least some of those heretics survived.

Heres a more recent, and far more polished take on speculative biology. It's very tame but, honestly I'm happy with where I've taken the Rocs. Partially it's their setting, I didn't want to go anywhere too inhuman when they'll be interacting with Trolls and Cherubs and the like. As Zany as their biology gets its... definitely not hard sci fi. However, I couldn't help myself from legitimately trying to flesh out their biology. I've been feeling really inspired by @jayrockin's stuff, seriously go check them out.

Rocs have very dark brown blood- basically black. I'd compare it to dirty motor oil, or soy sauce.

Most of their cybernetics are structural, made of a very strong but lightweight alloy. The metal is very expensive though, so Rocs tend to re-use cybernetics from their dead. On top of the skeleton is synthetic muscle, which supplements the Rocs strength and lets them survive in gravity environments. Synth muscle is much cheaper than alloy, but also less durable, needing to be replaced every decade or so as it accrues micro tears. Synth muscle draws power from an energy cell, usually located in the gut. On top of the cybernetics, Rocs will often wear "shells." These partially serve to protect the synth muscle, but are largely decorational.

Developing Rocs play an important role in designing their own cybernetics before coming of age- so their flesh is of their own design. This is an important concept in Roc religion, which I will get into later.

#5 is right I think. Can't remeber. It's getting sort of late for me, but i'm wayyyyyy too excited to stop at this pace.

Heres an art I did. In an earlier post you may have caught the "Brain Spike."

The brain spike is a computer, which is woven into her brain. Really its a glorified graphing calculator- but she had to get it as part of her job. More on that in a future post, just you wait.

Anyways, it works by interfacing with memory. So, confronted with a complicated ass differential she just tries to "remember" the solution and the brain spike returns the correct answer as if she had previously memorized it. She doesn't do a lot of mental math, she doesn't need to.

Additionally, she can upload files such as blueprints and maps, allowing her to instantly "memorize" the information.

However, this messes with her ability to remember... pretty much anything. The brain spikes will interpret an active attempt to remember something as a query, and will go "Nope, no data on childhood memories sorry." Memories can still be subconsciously triggered though, through smells and stuff. She also keeps a memory journal to try and, circumvent it.

Another major drawback, which is depicted in this image, is that if it tries to load a corrupted file it will Crash with devastating consequences. Chewing 5-Gum levels of destruction, massive sensory overload that can take her out of working order for a while.
