Gonna switch it up and make Rey the skeptic and Ben the believer because as a child, he would swear a demon whispered to him in the middle of the night. If he squinted, he could see it in the corner with glowing yellow eyes.

They're looking into reports they've received of this old mansion on the edge of town with a creepy old groundskeeper that scares everyone away, but when they get there, the house is beautifully furnished and clean and the young woman who greets them is kind and lovely.

She makes them tea and they ask her about the hauntings and she's like, "Oh, hauntings? I haven't heard of anything like that." And they're like, "Then who called us? It was a guy named, like, Kenobi or something?" And she's like, "Oh, Obi-Wan? He's my neighbor! He's good friends with my husband, Anakin!"

And Ben and Rey are both like wtf bc they looked into the history of the house and before Obi-Wan Kenobi bought it, it was owned by a guy named Anakin Skywalker who went on a rampage and killed his wife and almost killed his newborn twin children (but Obi-Wan stepped in.)

Anyway long story short Rey and Ben go to sleep in a nice guest bedroom, wake up in a dilapidated old house (in the same bed, but it's all dusty and gross), and find out the demon that plagued Ben as a child is the same demon that drove Anakin to kill his nice wife that made them tea.

In a more meaningful note, I would like to give my gratitude. While a lot of people has thanked and gave their gratitude towards Rachel (no disrespect to those who did/g), I would like to give it to the ULO/LO Critical community.

I may have just created this account months ago, but I have been in the fandom for well-over 2/3 years, during quarantine — which seems like not that long, yet it has changed me in ways I've never expected. The community has inspired my art, my stories and how I take in media of all sorts and I cannot thank them enough for that.

I was an autistic NB 17-year-old alone in a mostly conservative city with no sense of a community or a friend group, and you guys, the LO Critical community, gave me a place to make friends, to give me a reason to keep going and to be myself and more and I could never truly repay that, and I mean it. Every word.

You all are kind, creative, motivating, funny, open and yeah sometimes hard-headed and stubborn, but also hella passionate in your craft and beliefs. And I believe that passion will prosper into something even more amazing (if that's even possible)

I may not know what will come next for this silly part of the LO fandom (for all I know we could be the next reylos or something lmao), but I do know that years from now when I'm an old hag with 50+ cats in a spooky haunted house I'll always remember you all and the impact you had on my life.

So from the bottom of my heart, my soul and beyond:

naut's book reviews 2023!

so i have read around 50 books this year! (the answer according to my storygraph is 45 books but listen i've done a lot of rereading and i want that to mean something so we're rounding up). here's my top nine!

not that i think anyone will argue with me but: this is just my highly subjective opinon! take this with the same grain of salt as a fic rec list, it's just what i've been enjoying this year!

1.) pretend to act surprised, it is The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir! honestly Gideon The Ninth, Harrow the Ninth, and Nona the Ninth are all competing for #1. i've reread them each in every format possible on multiple occasions. i've been in a permanent book hangover since i read it. this book. this book!!!!! it didn't feel so much as "right time right place" as a semi-truck to my frontal lobe. i had GtN on my bookshelf for MONTHS before reading and i wish i'd picked it up first. HtN and NtN just fundamentally changed my brain chemistry.

2.) The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon. she's here for one reason only and that's because i got to watch my favorite fanfic author get a book deal so i'm going to be really annoying about it. this is the bar for reylo-coded enemies-to-lovers that all romantasy will be judged by.

3.) Ninth House / Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo. she was the reigning queen of the summer. ninth house and hell bent were so refreshing, especially after i'd read the shadow & bone series (spoilers: not my favorites!). absolutely obsessed. paired immaculately well with the new Sleep Token album.

4.) A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson. this book absolutely delivers on exactly what it is! thank you for my life!

5.) Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson. has a book ever had such phenomenal vibes. i really don't think so.

6.) there's a lot to be argued with "fanfiction doesn't count as reading a book" but if any piece of fanwork has transcended that barrier, it's Manacled by SenLinYu and this was the year i finally read it. i'm simply not the same person i was before i read this ! i am haunted !!!!!!!!!!

7.) Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. i'm really loving these smaller books he's doing because i love this man's writing but i've tried to reread the stormlight archives like three times so i can catch up. this was a delight. the endpapers made me weepy which is a weird flex for a book???

8.) The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. this snapped me out of my post-tlt hangover! reading this was a delicious fucking meal. i haven't finished the trilogy yet but this one was so, so, so good.

9.) Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas. okay. listen. i decided to read every single book this woman has written. statistically one of them had to be good. it's hard for a seven book fantasy series to stick the landing but i'd argue she did it, i cried on my bedroom floor for an hour.

i've had so much fun reading this year 😭😭😭 i have so many books on my TBR i'm trying to get to.... and so many good ones!!! currently reading What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher and i'm already having a massively great time.

maybe i will talk about the bottom of the barrel from this year 😭 i'm officially breaking up with romantasy as a genre, if i see another book called "x of y and z" i will throw up !!!!

My new Jane Eyre-inspired modern Reylo AU fic has officially begun <3 Here's the description and link to the first chapter:

Rey Johnson has never taken a risk in her life. She was from a foster family with an angry drunk father and a foster mother who never did anything about his rampages. She learned from an early age that it was easier to keep her head down as much as she could and to escape in times of pain rather than to fight back. One refuge she found was in reading--specifically, the works of Gothic horror novelist Ben Solo.

Having just found out the elusive author will be teaching a one-time-only class at his alma mater across the country, Rey decides to take the first leap of her life. Despite having never had a formal education, she manages to attend Ben Solo's literature class. However, when the only accommodation she can afford is a haunted house owned by the author himself, things take more unexpected turns than Rey can keep up with. The most unexpected of them all is the relationship she forms with the grumpy professor. A man of many secrets. And tragedies.
