Gonna switch it up and make Rey the skeptic and Ben the believer because as a child, he would swear a demon whispered to him in the middle of the night. If he squinted, he could see it in the corner with glowing yellow eyes.

They're looking into reports they've received of this old mansion on the edge of town with a creepy old groundskeeper that scares everyone away, but when they get there, the house is beautifully furnished and clean and the young woman who greets them is kind and lovely.

She makes them tea and they ask her about the hauntings and she's like, "Oh, hauntings? I haven't heard of anything like that." And they're like, "Then who called us? It was a guy named, like, Kenobi or something?" And she's like, "Oh, Obi-Wan? He's my neighbor! He's good friends with my husband, Anakin!"

And Ben and Rey are both like wtf bc they looked into the history of the house and before Obi-Wan Kenobi bought it, it was owned by a guy named Anakin Skywalker who went on a rampage and killed his wife and almost killed his newborn twin children (but Obi-Wan stepped in.)

Anyway long story short Rey and Ben go to sleep in a nice guest bedroom, wake up in a dilapidated old house (in the same bed, but it's all dusty and gross), and find out the demon that plagued Ben as a child is the same demon that drove Anakin to kill his nice wife that made them tea.

In a more meaningful note, I would like to give my gratitude. While a lot of people has thanked and gave their gratitude towards Rachel (no disrespect to those who did/g), I would like to give it to the ULO/LO Critical community.

I may have just created this account months ago, but I have been in the fandom for well-over 2/3 years, during quarantine — which seems like not that long, yet it has changed me in ways I've never expected. The community has inspired my art, my stories and how I take in media of all sorts and I cannot thank them enough for that.

I was an autistic NB 17-year-old alone in a mostly conservative city with no sense of a community or a friend group, and you guys, the LO Critical community, gave me a place to make friends, to give me a reason to keep going and to be myself and more and I could never truly repay that, and I mean it. Every word.

You all are kind, creative, motivating, funny, open and yeah sometimes hard-headed and stubborn, but also hella passionate in your craft and beliefs. And I believe that passion will prosper into something even more amazing (if that's even possible)

I may not know what will come next for this silly part of the LO fandom (for all I know we could be the next reylos or something lmao), but I do know that years from now when I'm an old hag with 50+ cats in a spooky haunted house I'll always remember you all and the impact you had on my life.

So from the bottom of my heart, my soul and beyond:

Above is the first part of this Haunted house/Modern AU Reylo story. But here is part two.

Rey could taste the cinnamon and nutmeg, feel the warmth of the soup… she saw him looking down into her eyes as their fingers brushed over the soup ladle…

Suddenly, she was running and crawling quickly through another short tunnel, chasing a figure in black ahead of her. She could hear him laugh as he let her nearly catch him just to run off again. Each tunnel of the haunted house suddenly seemed to stretch…

She was running through the dark when something caught her from the side, pulling her into their warm body before backing her up against the wall. Ben Solo was smiling down at her so close. He smelled like spice and smoke… appropriate since he's so elusive.. she could never seem to catch him. But now she was caught, and his hand was on her hip as he dipped towards her, kissing her full on the mouth. He tasted of fall, of all her favorite autumn moments. Her knees were weak as she kissed him back, and he pushed further into her body. He still wasn't close enough...

“At this rate, you're going to be stuck on the first floor. You need to try harder, Niima. You're too easily caught, and you can't quite keep up,” Ben practically hissed in her ear…

She was covered in sweat and frustrated when she woke from her dream. Every year since her first year, she'd had this dream. Sometimes, he caught her and simply told her she wouldn't get far, which is what had actually happened at the end of her 3rd training session. Other times, it was more... physical… It made her angry at herself for finding him so infuriatingly attractive even after he'd teased her so much her first year. 

Hell, Ben had even said something last year when he ran the simulation. She'd finally caught him at the end of the 3rd floor cornering him with a somewhat smug smile. He'd smiled back before moving towards her, closing the distance. 

“See I can be better than the first floor,” she taunted, “I can catch you too.” 

Ben closed the distance and she felt her breath hitch as he leaned in… for a kiss she thought, but yet again, as he had that first year, he shifted at the last second, “Perhaps you didn't consider the fact that I let you catch me?” he whispered so closely to her ear she could feel his lips. 

He had then stepped back and smiled at her before adding, “You're better Niima, but you'll have to be much better than that to actually catch me…” he said before heading up to the 4th floor. 

It was the way he'd laughed, taunted, and run her ragged that first year that had pissed her off so much, but especially the way he'd given her feedback. He was so close to her, seemingly going in for a kiss before whispering it in her ear. 

Rose and Kaydel had been lucky getting to train instead with Poe or Finn. But I guess she owed her successful accent to the 5th floor to how irritated Ben had made her. She'd joined a gym where she figured she'd get in better shape. But then she made a friend named Chewie who started teaching her Parkour, which is why she'd moved so quickly to the 5th floor. 

Why work so hard for a job that lasted a month and a half when she was a student at the university getting her degree in mechanical engineering? It was because of Ben. She wanted to catch him or outrun him. Prove herself and shut him up. Of course, sometimes her subconscious brain would remind her again that she could always try shutting him up with her own lips… 

It didn't help that she'd occasionally see him around campus. He was in his 5th year there, Poe had told her, starting his master's degree in business. Every time they caught each other's eye, he would smirk at her, and she would scowl back.

Today, she would outrun him. She wouldn't be caught. She would prove herself. And there was no way Ben was getting lunch. Not a scream to be heard from her. At best, she would laugh at him as she achieved her exit off his floor.

naut's book reviews 2023!

so i have read around 50 books this year! (the answer according to my storygraph is 45 books but listen i've done a lot of rereading and i want that to mean something so we're rounding up). here's my top nine!

not that i think anyone will argue with me but: this is just my highly subjective opinon! take this with the same grain of salt as a fic rec list, it's just what i've been enjoying this year!

1.) pretend to act surprised, it is The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir! honestly Gideon The Ninth, Harrow the Ninth, and Nona the Ninth are all competing for #1. i've reread them each in every format possible on multiple occasions. i've been in a permanent book hangover since i read it. this book. this book!!!!! it didn't feel so much as "right time right place" as a semi-truck to my frontal lobe. i had GtN on my bookshelf for MONTHS before reading and i wish i'd picked it up first. HtN and NtN just fundamentally changed my brain chemistry.

2.) The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon. she's here for one reason only and that's because i got to watch my favorite fanfic author get a book deal so i'm going to be really annoying about it. this is the bar for reylo-coded enemies-to-lovers that all romantasy will be judged by.

3.) Ninth House / Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo. she was the reigning queen of the summer. ninth house and hell bent were so refreshing, especially after i'd read the shadow & bone series (spoilers: not my favorites!). absolutely obsessed. paired immaculately well with the new Sleep Token album.

4.) A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson. this book absolutely delivers on exactly what it is! thank you for my life!

5.) Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson. has a book ever had such phenomenal vibes. i really don't think so.

6.) there's a lot to be argued with "fanfiction doesn't count as reading a book" but if any piece of fanwork has transcended that barrier, it's Manacled by SenLinYu and this was the year i finally read it. i'm simply not the same person i was before i read this ! i am haunted !!!!!!!!!!

7.) Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. i'm really loving these smaller books he's doing because i love this man's writing but i've tried to reread the stormlight archives like three times so i can catch up. this was a delight. the endpapers made me weepy which is a weird flex for a book???

8.) The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. this snapped me out of my post-tlt hangover! reading this was a delicious fucking meal. i haven't finished the trilogy yet but this one was so, so, so good.

9.) Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas. okay. listen. i decided to read every single book this woman has written. statistically one of them had to be good. it's hard for a seven book fantasy series to stick the landing but i'd argue she did it, i cried on my bedroom floor for an hour.

i've had so much fun reading this year 😭😭😭 i have so many books on my TBR i'm trying to get to.... and so many good ones!!! currently reading What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher and i'm already having a massively great time.

maybe i will talk about the bottom of the barrel from this year 😭 i'm officially breaking up with romantasy as a genre, if i see another book called "x of y and z" i will throw up !!!!

This is the second year I've kept a month-by-month list. Makes me feel like I've accomplished something and also helps prevent those moments of "I read a really cool book/fanfic but I can't remember what it was! DX"

In 2021, my favorite was Legendborn by Tracy Deonn. With the 2022 list, it's harder to pick a favorite, but I think it's tied between some of the scifi I read - the Murderbot series, Iron Widow, Project Hail Mary, and Space Opera. They were all so fun and all had very different tones. I also loved Naomi Novik's Scholomance trilogy and Tracy Deonn's Bloodmarked (the sequel to my 2021 favorite).

hi, hope you're having a lovely day! would you mind sharing some of your favorite star wars fics? the obi-wan park ranger ones sound fun but any in general :)

ok so i've actually only read two park ranger fics but i found a third today and i've read a few fics from this author and they have all been v good so i'm excited for it!

here are some other good fics but be warned. i will read pretty much anything except reylo fic so just pick and choose from this list i guess lol

double agent vader - what the title says. it's like Mandatory reading for star wars fic, it's inspired so many other fics!!!

nor the suns themselves brighter - anakin/obi-wan, anakin never left tatooine but they meet after order 66. i read this today and it was a v enjoyable read.

the ghost and mr kenobi - qui-gon/obi-wan, obi-wan buys a haunted house on a small island. i wasnt even done w it and i already wanted to reread it.

make your bed (lie in it) - obi-wan/cody, sleeping together (but not like that). im gonna be real i only vaguely rmbr this one but i marked it 10/10. and now i rlly want to reread it

ever in our favor - no ship, hunger games au. tbh i dont rmbr the fic super well but i rmbr that it's 100% the reason i reread the hunger games trilogy in early 2021 so. it must have been good.

how to grow vegetables and alienate people - qui-gon/obi-wan, modern au where obi-wan takes over a plot in the community vegetable garden.

never leaving well enough alone - din/luke, they meet several times before the end of s2 of the mandalorian!

the point cloud reliquary - qui-gon/obi-wan, historian/archaeologist obi-wan. i was looking all over for this one in december and just found it today while digging around :-) v happy it wasnt deleted

first sight - obi-wan/cody. late addition but i just reread this and. there's a reason why it's one of the top kudos'd codywan fics

Here is part 3 of my haunted house Reylo AU. We now get to see what Ben's point of view is for all their past experiences. If you want to read the previous parts go to the link above.

Ben had been excited and anxious all day. Tonight, Rey would be running through his floor of Scare Tower. As he was helping run the basic haunted house that evening, he couldn't help but continue to daydream about what tonight might be like.

Ever since Rey's first year, he had been fascinated by her and irked by her at the same time. It had become pretty clear during their first training sessions that she was very competitive, just like him. They took turns chasing and escaping one another, and she started to talk a little crap anytime she was even a little successful, and he couldn't help but match her energy.

On the 3rd day, he had cornered her, and he had nearly made a move, but he remembered that he was training her and it would be inappropriate. Uncle Luke didn't need anymore reasons to treat him like the troubled teen he used to be. He was constantly giving him lectures, and Ben didn't need to hear yet another one.

After that near kiss, he had also realized that it might even be creepy of him, as a 22 year old man, to hit on a young 19 year old freshman student. But then the next year, he'd nearly done it again, and Uncle Luke had plenty to say to him for his “unprofessional actions” during the simulation. But this year, if the opportunity presented itself, he wasn't going to shy away from it anymore.

Rey was just too beautiful and he was tired of not fully expressing his feelings because it was “unprofessional” especially for a job that was so short lived and that he likely wouldn't be doing again after this year.

Ever since the first year, he'd had dreams of what he would love to experience with Rey. He sometimes dreamt of making his Mom's butternut soup with Rey. The sound she made every year when she finally got a bite still living in his brain rent free. Sometimes he'd dream of those moments during training, but instead of chickening out at the last minute he'd actually kiss her, push her up against the wall, tell her how beautiful and hardworking she clearly was. He would dream of going on picnics or hikes with her, of taking her to family events, of making her his in every possible way.

If he could make her scream tonight, he could at least guarantee himself a lunch date, during which he would tell her how he honestly felt. Though, he was a little nervous that she might reject him. I mean based on her physical reactions to those moments of training with him he was pretty sure she was attracted to him, but then again all the sarcastic comments she made to him, the way she rolled her eyes, even the disappointed/angry way she'd looked at him after he hadn't kissed her…. What if she wouldn't want him back.

He really just wanted to be with her… he would be happy just having quiet days with her, eating soup, and making her smile….. he would not let his competitive nature and his Uncle's voice in the back of his head screw it up this time.
