merlin S1 rewatch: episode 10 ⚔
how could I not love the tale of the weird misfit who returns home one day, bringing with him an even weirder assortment of friends, to teach everyone how to fight back against the oppressors who have been stealing their resources?
but enough about a bug’s life. let's talk about the episode.
• I see Hunith throwing herself at a bandit and I immediately go “oh that’s where he gets it from”. I love you Hunith, you mad gal <3
• Hunith’s audience with the king is interesting – not just because she’s pleading with the man who would kill her son without a second thought if he knew about his magic, and she goes so far as to call him “a good king” and “a caring man” while doing so, but also because Uther seems genuinely sympathetic, even if unwilling to intervene. I think that says something about Uther – I think in the eyes of the people who don’t care much about sorcerers and their ilk, Uther is a decent, perhaps even a good, king. Certainly not the tyrant that Merlin and Morgana consider him to be (justifiably so).
• “I wish that Camelot was able to help people regardless of how far away they lived”, Arthur says, almost as if there were a prophecy about a united Albion under his reign
• “I want to make him pay for what he did to you” -> when Merlin sees Kanen is ON SIGHT. I love protective Merlin.
• I love this so much. “Most powerful sorcerer on Earth” well to his mama he’s just a little boy. have you considered that
• Merlin almost decapitating Arthur lol. It’s a good thing Arthur has good reflexes or this would’ve have been a much shorter story
• YAY! A NEW KILL
• When Arthur ruins Merlin and Will’s little reunion and Will is immediately unimpressed
• “Am I the only one wondering who the hell this is?” > Will really interrupted Arthur’s speech to loudly ask “excuse you who the fuck are you??” and I love him for it
• The fact that Merlin just straight up slept on the floor. Like I get it, they are poor, but you’re telling me he had nothing all the years he lived there? not even a straw mattress, nothing?? because that sounds kind of weird. I mean alright, I’ll accept it, but I think it’s weird. I think if you had to sleep on the ground every night for years you’d try to make yourself a bit comfortable even if you never “knew any different”
• Anyway, I guess that explains why Merlin was reluctant to part with his bed when Alice moved in with him and Gaius. “I’m not going back to sleeping on the floor thank you! I love beds now”
• MERLIN: “Life’s simple out here (...)” / ARTHUR: “Sounds… nice” / MERLIN: “You’d hate it” -> I like that Arthur was trying really hard not to say anything rude about Merlin’s old life, and that Merlin was like “it’s alright you can say it sucks”, because really he wasn’t cut out for that kind of life either. It’s also funny that Arthur later tells Gwen he fantasies about being a farmer, like SIR BE REAL. You'd hate it.
• Arthur pretending to eat Hunith’s food. Making fake noises like a toddler. Spoiled brat behaviour
• WILL: Why did you leave? / MERLIN: It wasn't what I wanted. My mother was worried. When she found out you knew, she was so angry. → it sounds like Will actually didn’t know about Merlin’s secret for very long before Merlin had to leave. And the fact that Will has to ask Merlin why he left implies Merlin did it without even a goodbye or a made-up excuse. Merlin’s departure being apparently so rushed because Hunith feared for his safety means that the attitude towards magic in Ealdor isn't actually very different from Camelot’s, despite it not being officially outlawed.
• Arthur is a good leader!! and in this episode he shows it in big ways, like in his “Battle of St. Crispin speech” moment, but also in more subtle ways, like when he notices during training that Matthew is a hopeless fighter, and instead of dismissing him he takes him aside and goes “Matthew my friend I have a special task for you :)”, as a way of keeping him away from the fight while still making him feel useful, and without hurting his pride. (Sadly, this backfires later.) I know the fandom likes to joke about Arthur being a dumbass but he can be very perceptive (at times). And he is good at strategic thinking.
• No comment. Just Gwen and Morgana sharing blankets. They are very good pals.
• Merlin telling Arthur: “We're going to make Kanen rue the day he ever came to this village” hits different when I remember he said he wanted to make Kanen pay for striking his mother
• “In this circle, we're all equals” → a circle is very much like a round table in this way
• I love moments like Arthur’s Rousing Speech™ – because they show why he is the one destined to unite Albion. He’s capable of inspiring people and gaining the support of those who initially disliked him (Merlin, Gwaine, Will himself, to name a few), because he is noble of heart, and brave, and caring, etc. And yeah, he’s also a brat at times, but to be fair to him he’s 21. And he has a shit father.
• “Food is scarce for these people, you shouldn't turn your nose up at it!” → Gwen is no shrinking violet okay!! She will lecture the prince, if the prince is being a brat. I’m thinking about Arthur telling Agravaine “I don't want a queen who spends her days floating around the castle agreeing with my every word” in ep 4x09. He loves Gwen because she’s not afraid of calling him out! (same goes for Merlin)
• GWEN: “I have faith in you. I mean. We all do” / ARTHUR:
• Arthur helping Merlin with his armour is a very sweet moment. I can’t believe Merlin was about to tell Arthur he had magic here. HE LITERALLY WAS ABOUT TO TELL HIM I'LL NEVER BE OVER IT
• Battle. Battle. Another kill for baby Merlin (!).
• IT FUCKEN WIMDY
• I’m not entirely sure what the windstorm did to be honest, it didn’t seem to kill anyone it just… scared the bandits away? Anyway, that doesn’t matter. Willing suspension of disbelief and all that.
• Arthur’s face when he marched up to Merlin and Will like “THAT WAS MAGIC WHO DID THAT?? IT WAS ONE OF YOU TWO”. This man is NOT ready for the truth (and yet Merlin was prepared to confess AGAIN. He was literally about to do it I HATE THIS SHOW)
• (sigh) well how convenient
• LISTEN I know Will was pretty much dead anyway but I can’t get over how NOBODY tried to do anything for him like?? They just put him on a table? And stared at him? Not even trying to do anything or. I don’t know, offer a word of comfort. If I were Will I’d be offended to be honest.
• Will’s last words being “Merlin, I’m scared.” EVIL
Merlin: *watching his best friend’s body burn on the pyre* Arthur: well when were you going to tell me he was a sorcerer
• Hunith: POWERFUL WARLOCK? NO HE IS BABY
• "When the time is right, the truth will be known. Until then, you must keep your talents hidden. It's better for everyone.” → kind of funny how Hunith went from "you should tell Arthur, he'll understand, he cares about you :)" to "never mind, BACK IN THE CLOSET!!" And by funny I mean tragic.

merlin S1 rewatch: episode 11 🦄
hey remember that I started a S1 rewatch? last summer.
just some random thoughts. this is not a coherent or comprehensive commentary in any way.
in fact, let's start from (nearly) the end: why is there a MASSIVE labyrinth in the middle of nowhere? like who made it? who maintains it? what is it for?
and Arthur seemed to know exactly where to find it so its existence isn't even a mystery, apparently. I know there are some random, never-mentioned-again locations in other episodes but this one is possibly the random-est.
anyway. interesting episode to rewatch knowing what's going to happen later. of course, it's very much about Arthur's character (literally), but it's also about Arthur and Uther in a way that lays the groundwork beautifully for ep 5x03 (The Song of Uther Pendragon).
It starts with Arthur seeking his father's praise by presenting him with the unicorn's horn; it ends with him receiving a lukewarm pat on the arm by Uther after saving the day (after he ruined it, I suppose, but still).
Arthur fails the second test when the "grain thief" he confronts in the forest voices his deepest fears – "he doubts you'll make a good king," the man says. "I think he wishes he had another son".
(I've seen people ask "Why did Arthur summon Uther's ghost instead of Ygraine's?" about ep 5x03. Well, here's why. Because Arthur always sought Uther's approval. Because he always looked up to Uther, as a king if not as a man, and who else would he turn to when doubting himself?)
Naturally, Arthur shows himself to be worthy of the throne when he's most unlike Uther – like when he refuses to give out the order to stop distributing food to the people – but he doesn't know it yet. it will take him some more years to realise it.
I love that we see Arthur's fiddling with Ygraine's ring right in the following scene, when he's looking at his people.
I love how subtle the use of this ring is (we are never even explicitly told it belonged to Arthur's mother and it could easily have been mentioned) and how it adds to Arthur's characterisation when you start paying attention to it.
Gwen didn't have a big part in this episode (Morgana even less so) but I loved her "I'm sure Arthur will think of something" to Merlin. She always had faith in him. (see also ep 3x13: "You gave us hope… I saw the king you will become" 🥺)
Merlin drinking poison to save Arthur in ep 4 vs Arthur drinking poison to save Merlin in ep 11. We love symmetry <3
Arthur telling Merlin "I'm glad you're here, Merlin", knowing he's going to die soon, hits different after watching the last episode (also this line makes me think of Frodo's "I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam")
I quite like the fairytale vibes of this ep – the haughty prince, the curse, the secret test of character, the three trials. All in all an enjoyable self-contained episode.
Also kudos to the horse for its acting.

Merlin S1 rewatch: episode 5
here we go! again!!
today we are watching the Lancelot episode. just a few random comments because. I am so very sleepy and I deleted the first draft by accident.
A nice little episode all in all. Nice set up for an incredibly sexy recurring character. Some nice foreshadowing. What's not to like?
• I like how this episode opens. Merlin picking mushrooms, looking so baby. Eyes full of awe and wonder. Looking like... like he's never seen a mushroom in his life, in fact. Anyway, something very cottagecore about this. Fairy vibes.
• Also he's scarfless? For much (most?) of the episode? It looks like early in the series they weren’t so obsessively attached to Merlin’s neckerchief as part of his character design
• I love how Merlin doesn’t even try to use magic against the Griffin. He just falls on his back, shuts his eyes and goes, “Welp, guess I'll die”
• HOW DID MERLIN CARRY LANCELOT BACK TO CAMELOT
• “Ever since I was a child I've dreamed of coming here. It's my life's ambition to join the knights of Camelot.” -> Guy who's spent his whole life dreaming about becoming a knight of Camelot doesn’t know the first thing about the job requirements
• (No but really, the funniest thing about this episode for me is Lancelot’s utter shock at finding out only noblemen can be knights. That's, like. The first thing about the knights of Camelot, it seems like. You’d think he would have done some basic research beforehand. But that's also how I apply to jobs so I won't make fun of him too much)
• Merlin is such a hype man, “LANCELOT THEY'RE GOING TO LOVE YOU!!” This is literally what he says! He’s adorable.
• Merlin's acting like a kid who's found a stray puppy on the side of the road and is trying to convince his dad to keep him. “He’s great, you’ll love him, I promise. He won’t be any trouble I’ll walk him every day”
• MERLIN: “He's saved my life” / ARTHUR: “That's blown it for starters” -> ARTHUR IS FUNNY. I just feel the need to point out that Arthur is funny, actually. Especially when he’s being a cunt.
• MERLIN: “You're not a nobleman by any chance, are you?” / LANCE: “haha, good lord, no” -> someone didn’t read the job description
• The way Gaius pointedly glares at Merlin after telling Lancelot he’s sorry he can’t be a knight… Like, he knows his son might be tempted to do something stupid about it (commit crime)
• I did not remember Lancelot’s tragic Origin Story!
When I was a boy, my village was attacked by raiders from the northern plains. They were slaughtered where they stood, my father, my mother. Everyone. I alone escaped. I vowed that day that never again would I be helpless in the face of tyranny. I made sword craft my life. Every waking hour since that day, I devoted to the art of combat, and when I was ready, I set forth for Camelot.
"Every waking hour since that day, I devoted to the art of combat" -> Yeah that sounds like a sane and healthy way of dealing with the trauma of losing both your parents and your entire village in one go, well done my boy
• Merlin looks SO proud of his little fraud scheme! BE GAY DO CRIME
• Seriously he is such an instigator! He says, “DAMN THE RULES, THE RULES ARE WRONG”! But he can see Lancelot’s obvious reluctance so he’s like, “We're not breaking the rules, we're bending them” HE’S SO SNEAKY I LOVE HIM
• This is such a basic narrative trope (if it even is a trope) but I love first meetings of characters who are going to become famously important to one another. I'm talking, like, Holmes and Dr. Watson. Or yes, Merlin and future King Arthur. There’s just something about it that I find delightful. "They don’t even know!! They have no idea. But I do!" This is about Gwen and Lancelot.
• Such a cute Meet Cute™. I love the way it plays with what we know is going to happen. Even if we don’t exactly know how it's going to happen in the series, Guinevere and Lancelot’s romance is the stuff of legends. I love their obvious and immediate mutual attraction. The slight awkwardness. The foreshadowing! “I'm not a knight yet, my lady” / “And I’m not a lady.” NO YET, BUT YOU WILL BE!! AAAAAH
• I didn’t pay much attention to it the first time I watched this episode but Lancelot speaks in such a formal, lofty way compared to everyone else. He literally sounds like he walked out of a book of chivalric romance. "I faced it myself, Sire. Some days past. I struck it full square. I wondered how it endured"; "Arthur stands in mortal peril", like WHO TALKS LIKE THIS. BE NORMAL. But it never crosses the line into being obnoxious, and I love how his character is defined through his speech as well as by his behaviour. Well done, writers.
• LANCELOT: "Are you two...you know" -> Lancelot wastes no time in checking if Gwen is on the market. GOOD FOR HIM. (I like how Merlin finds the idea of dating Gwen literally laughable. Bit harsh, that).
• “She seems lovely. Guinevere.” / “Oh, yeah. Yeah, she is. And the best seamstress in Camelot, I promise” -> MERLIN THIS MAN DOES NOT CARES ABOUT GWEN'S SKILL AS A SEAMSTRESS OPEN YOUR EYES YOU SILLY CHILD
• (But no, to be fair to him, he did notice)
• Arthur just... just BITCH-SLAPPING Lancelot out of the blue is actually hilarious. He's a comedian and he doesn't even know it.
• Merlin still acts like a bit of a teenager with Gaius in this ep. When Gaius discovers his forgery of the seal of nobility, Merlin tells him, “if you wanna punish me for it, go ahead” and then walks off! I’m sorry, this is a teenager acting out against his dad.
• Merlin does seem to be still testing boundaries with Gaius, but in a way that's an obvious request for reassurance, too – later in the episode he asks him: “Do you even care what happens to me?” (!!) And back in episode 1x02, when Gaius said, "What do I do if you get caught?", Merlin asked: "what would you do?" Insecure teen behaviour. Please Gaius just tell him you love him!! (He does tell him here, thank God).
• The broomstick fight scene. Much has been said about it already. The rituals are, indeed, intricate. Something so homoerotic about Arthur’s attempts to poke Lancelot in the chest with his stick. What I want to know is – did they know? Did they know when they were filming it that it would look like this. Like, was it deliberate
• @sapphickittykatherine it’s not much but there are some hints of Morlance in this ep. During Lancelot’s knighting scene, Morgana looks at him with obvious interest and asks “Who is this man?” And also later at his celebration (I’ll get to it).
The celebration scene! I love it! I’m gonna break it down into parts:
• “You played God, Merlin" -> I like this line. I think Gaius put his finger on an important character trait of Merlin’s here. He always means well, but he can be manipulative and controlling. Not so much here, perhaps, but it does emerge more in later eps.
• Not Arthur looking at Morgana with incestuous intent 💀💀💀
• “Tell me, do you think her...beautiful?” / “Yes, Sire. I do.” -> Another favourite trope of mine – two characters talking to each other but having two entirely different conversations. A bit like that cursed scene in the Disir, and with Arthur just as much oblivious (actually, could someone tell the poor guy what's going on. just once)
• Meanwhile, Morgana’s making sexy eyes at Lancelot while biting into a… cherry? I can’t tell. Some kind of sexually-connoted fruit, that’s for sure. I love how she also looks murderous while doing it. Praying mantis energy.
• Merlin and Gwen’s conversation is so cute. I’ve said it before but it’s giving girlie-and-her-gay-best-friend vibes. Look at them! They are a woman and her gay friend sitting in a bar, exchanging notes about the men around them. Over drinks. The way Merlin encourages Gwen to commit mischief too! “OH YOU ARE NO FUN GWEN. COME ON, JUST PLAY ALONG. WHO WOULD YOU RATHER F—”
• Arthur or Lancelot? I think I know what Merlin’s answer would be. At least at this point in the series. (Hint: it's not Arthur).
• “I think our Sir Lancelot might have eyes for you, Gwen” -> Merlin playing matchmaker already. I love that he’s noticed, and that he’s trying to push these two together because LOVE MUST TRIUMPH. He’s such a romantic.
~ END OF THE CELEBRATION SCENE ~
• Oooh no, Lancelot’s ruse has been discovered, SIR YOU’RE UNDER ARREST
• “You are not worthy of the knighthood bestowed upon you. You never were. And you never will be” -> possibly the worst thing anyone could’ve said to Lancelot, SIR PLEASE STOP YOU’RE BREAKING HIM. CAN’T YOU SEE HE’S ABOUT TO CRY.
• All I can think about when I see gifs of Merlin talking to imprisoned Lancelot is, “it’s okay hun”
• It’s interesting to see S1 Uther so unwilling to accept that the creature they’re trying to defeat might be magic when later in the series he will relish the chance of accusing anything and anyone of being magic. ...Growth?
(The bisexuality of this scene. Off the charts.)
• It seems to me like they were setting up Lancelot to be more of an important character that he ended up being? I mean, he was important, just by virtue of being Lancelot, but he was in a grand total of 6 episodes. But, I love that we can see Arthur’s obvious attachment (for lack of a better word) to him already. A bit like with Gwen and Lancelot, it hints at what’s to come – he is destined to become Arthur’s favourite knight (I know people like to say that it's Leon, but I think it was Lance. And after Lancelot's death it was Mordred, eventually. If you must know.) I love it, foreshadowing. You can feel the future hanging heavy in the air.
• I didn’t remember that Gwen and Lancelot met again and she begged him not to go and I think they should have kissed here
• It’s so funny that while Merlin’s trying to master the spell to defeat the Griffin, Gaius goes, “Don't worry Merlin, we have plenty of time” GAIUS NO YOU LITERALLY HAVE LESS THAN 2 HOURS
• Actually this is a thing Gaius does a lot, telling Merlin he can make it when the chances of success are pretty slim, which on one hand is very sweet, like I get it he's being a supportive dad, but on the other hand it's also... setting Merlin up to be HUGELY DISAPPOINTED if he fails? I don't know, just something I've noticed in other eps.
• The scene of Lancelot killing the Griffin is actually pretty cool? I like the glowing blue spear (how did Merlin think Lancelot wasn’t going to notice) and THE SOUNDTRACK!!
• Merlin's PURE JOY after Lancelot's killed the Griffin is SO adorable, you just feel so happy for him. YES BABY YOU DID IT!!
• I love the parallel “You did it!” scenes with Arthur & Lancelot, Gaius & Merlin, and Arthur & Uther. Very nice, big fan of symmetry
• Gaius’s pride when Merlin comes back victorious is so heartwarming. I’ve said it before but I'll repeat it, Merlin and Gaius’s relationship is possibly my favourite in the show. I think Gaius doesn’t get enough credit for being Merlin’s main source of love and hugs during his Camelot years.
• “The Code bends for no man” / “Then THE CODE IS WRONG!” (!!) -> SAY IT LOUDER MY MAN!! S1 Arthur is so vocal with his father about what he believes is right and wrong, we love to see it
• Lancelot saying he must prove himself worthy of being a knight – of course, he might have been holding the spear that killed the Griffin but he wasn’t the one who actually defeated it, and this will not do. He must now abandon his life-long dream of being a knight and go fight strangers in a cage for money. It’s the only logical next step.
• LANCE I LOVE YOU BUT WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS
THE END!!
next episode is... one no one really cares about, but I really really liked it the first time I watched it so. hopefully it will live up to what I remember :3
#there. i've re-written it pretty much.#*me; tears in my eyes* “I do this for fun”#“actually i can just go” < now lives in my head as a lancelot phrase and it cracks me up#you'll find i go on about merlin and gaius quite a bit in these#that's because i love them#they mean a lot to me *taps own bio*#merlin's body count: still 1#< disappointing actually. like he killed a witch in ep 1 and then 4 eps of nothing. merlin S1 rewatch: episode 9
let’s move on to ep 1x09 because I need to get on. with my life. I already re-watched this ep months ago and I can’t be arsed to do it again so I’m going to use screencaps and perhaps the transcript to refresh my memory.
kilgharrah warning merlin that excalibur MUST NOT be wielded by anyone but arthur, and merlin handing the sword to uther literally the next morning is so funny to me. it's kind of the same thing that happens with the cup of life, when iseldir tells merlin “hey this is important so don’t lose it okay?” and five minutes later we see the cup rolling down a hill. I love consistent characterisation. please don’t give this boy anything important for safekeeping he has enough on his plate already!!
I think Arthur’s coronet looks a bit dumb but still it’s nothing compared to the horrendous Burger King crown he'll wear as king. why did uther get such a prettier crown. why couldn't arthur just wear his father's crown. so many questions
why did they name the undead knight tristan, was he supposed to be the tristan? I think he was. I think their take on tristan and isolde in S4 was so disappointing btw. anyway moving on
Merlin: Gaius have you seen that knight’s crest before? Gaius: No, I don’t think so. I didn’t see it clearly. Actually I’m not even sure I saw a knight. Perhaps it was a trick of the light or a collective hallucination
Sir Owain: I don’t need luck Arthur: oh fuck he’s going to die
Arthur’s face after Uther holds him back and someone else picks up the undead knight’s gauntlet. so much self-sacrificing acts of bravery and NONE of them done by him. wrong and upsetting
S1 Arthur I'm not sure how to tell you this so I'll just say it. your haircut looks dangerously close to a mullet
Merlin: maybe arson can fix this
Nimueh telling Uther she was his friend!!! fuck season 6 I want a Merlin prequel
he’s a precious baby. he’s shmol. only tiny
gwen doing her whole “you know I'd grant you anything merlin… I mean, not anything! haha” meanwhile merlin is too worried about keeping arthur alive to notice. GIRL HE'S BUSY
WHY. who stands like this
he holds this stupid pose the entire time morgana is talking to him. imagine begging someone not to commit suicide while they brood and look out of the window like a sullen byronic hero. I would have pushed him out of the window. drama ass bitch
this is the second nighttime encounter between uther and gaius in this episode. uther saying goodbye to gaius before going to fight in arthur’s place. toxic yaoi. is this anything
YOU KNOW NOTHING YOU STUPID CHILD. I love that Kilgharrah is a hater and a bitch. to be fair to him he spent 20 years in solitary confinement so he's earned it
gaius drugging arthur then gently helping him into his bed is hilarious. he’s so good at lying and drugging people. big fan of gaius using his evil talents for the greater good, or just to have a laugh sometimes which is equally valid
what a fine blade you have there… it would be a shame if something were to happen to it
he’s wearing silver bracelets!! plural!!
[Enter Arthur, visibly furious]
Gaius [gathering his things]: I've just remembered I've left something on the stove. I must go right now immediately
Arthur [while Gaius scurries away]: YOU HAD GAIUS DRUG ME??
arthur and uther little father and son moment was cute ngl
there are a few more scenes until the end but I don't have much to say about them except that I love gaius and merlin's relationship
Gaius: [stares loudly] Merlin: [pretends not to notice]
#a very serious commentary of ep 1x09#rewatch1.jls#merlin's body count: still 4#I'm sorry about the horrible wide spacing it is tumblr's fault

merlin S1 rewatch: episode 6
it’s been a hot minute! today’s commentary is about episode 1x06, A Remedy to Cure All Ills. which I re-watched more than a month ago actually, but I’ve been busy.
just some random comments and thoughts (as usual), and not an actual review or analysis.
I think this episode is extremely underrated – I loved it the first time I watched it, and I still thoroughly enjoyed it on my rewatch. yes, it’s kind of a filler episode with a very traditional Villain of the Week format – but it's a great villain.
Julian Rhind-Tutt’s performance as Edwin is great and I love a suave, smooth-talking, scheming villain as much as the next person. The way he manipulates people, never suggesting anything outright but playing on people’s fears and biases, only saying just enough to make them reach the conclusion he wants. Something very Richard III about it. Very Iago.
EDWIN: “No… I shan’t say”
Another thing I love about this episode is the rare (unique?) instance of Merlin showing his magic to another sorcerer whom he isn't suspicious of (the audience knows Edwin is the Bad Guy, of course, but at this point Merlin doesn't).
I can’t think of another moment like this in the series. Freya didn’t actually have magic. There is Gilli, but when Merlin reveals his magic to him he already knows of the boy's intention to kill Uther, and it is a last attempt to stop Gilli from committing regicide without putting him in harm’s way. Merlin's relationship with Mordred and the Druids was always complicated by prophecies and by his role as Emrys.
But there’s none of that here. Edwin tells Merlin that magic can be used for good, and that it can be ENJOYED! which is all Merlin ever wanted to hear. And it’s a bit heartbreaking to see the hope on Merlin's face, knowing all that is going to happen later in the series.
I also loved the previous interaction between Merlin and Edwin:
“It can’t explain love”!! He’s a romantic. He loves love 🥺🥺🥺
I think the writers lost sight of Edwin’s motive a bit by the time they got to the ending. He’s not content with just killing Uther, he also wants to… rule the kingdom? And he tells Merlin they can do it together? (a concept revisited in the Cornelius Sigan episode). I don't think it works well.
I think Edwin’s final evil speech would have been way more impactful if he had tried to appeal to Merlin’s empathetic side, instead of his non-existent thirst for power, and reminded him of all the suffering Uther caused and why he deserved to die. I guess that would be a moral dilemma that deserves more than a few minutes of screen time to be resolved satisfactorily, and we’re already at the end of the episode at this point.
The series does dwell on it in To Kill the King, to be fair, but I think the “why not just let Uther die?” dilemma could have been presented before then. (Merlin's momentarily hesitation at healing Uther at the end is more to do with his fear of being seen using magic by Uther than by an actual reluctance to save the king.)
Anyway. I still think this is a very good episode overall, even with its relatively weak ending.
Other random thoughts:
The random-ass reference to alchemy. Something that wasn’t elaborated on, nor ever mentioned again (??) Missed opportunity imo.
Gaius is made "a free man of Camelot", whatever that means. (Does it mean that he, like Merlin, is not from Camelot? Or is it some kind of special privilege? We don’t know. I think maybe in Love at the Time of Dragons Gaius mentions something about he and Alice coming to Camelot but I can’t remember and I can’t be bothered to check now)
Some excellent display of brotherly concern from Arthur when Morgana falls sick. He's the one pushing for Uther to call for Edwin. We love to see it
Merlin and Gaius all but call each other father and son. DON’T TOUCH ME.
Gaius was 100% ready to let Uther die if it meant saving Merlin’s life. btw.
Gaius and Uther. WHAT ARE THEY
All the heavy hints at Gaius’s acting as a Category Traitor in the Great Purge + the only instance of Gaius talking to Kilgharrah (!!!) I am obsessed with it
The paralles between Uther & Gaius and Arthur & Merlin. I feel absolutely normal about it
“Now, open your eyes, My Lord. I want my face to be the last face you ever see.” -> I don’t care if it’s cliched, this line fucks
MERLIN CLAIMS ANOTHER VICTIM, AT LAST!! I was starting to worry but finally my baby is back to killing people :)

Merlin S1 rewatch: episode 4 🌼
4 episodes in, and our boys are already tripping all over themselves to die for each other. Insane.
I don't have many funny comments to make about this one. It's a solid episode.
Arthur is an incredibly brave and chivalrous knight, Merlin is an extremely powerful sorcerer, and Uther is an utter bastard. Characters effectively distilled to their essence.
random thoughts & comments
• For all that it's a silly family show, the sets and locations are so beautiful. Look at this!
• Nimueh is so gorgeous in her blue turban. I can't blame Merlin for the flirting.
• Her fake name is Cara (!). But spelled with a C. Caras/Karas are not to be trusted, I guess
• They were really going all in with the red & blue juxtaposition
• I love Arthur red studded jacket. Why did they deprive him of his fun little outfits in later seasons! He's even wearing jewellery!! Wtf is this necklace, btw
• Stupid question but how did Nimueh know Arthur would end up with the poisoned chalice?? She just put it in the box
• Well done Gaius for identifying the poison in 0.5 seconds. That's got to be some kind of record. Does he train for that? Does Camelot hold an annual speed poison-identification contest?
• Luckily Gaius’s book contains all the information needed to retrieve the flower required for the antidote – what it looks like, where to find it, what to expect when you get there. Top 10 restaurants in the area. It's all in there.
• I've missed Uther! He's a great character/antagonist. "I can't stand by and watch [Merlin] die." / "Then don't look." (!) Banger of a line. And Anthony is an amazing actor.
• After having watched the entire series, I feel like S1 Arthur comes across as more of a noble and good guy than in later seasons? I can't put my finger on why, exactly. Perhaps the way he stands up to Uther with no hesitation. I don’t know.
• I like that Arthur gets to defeat the Cockatrice all by himself. So often in the series it's just Merlin (literally) working his magic behind the scenes and Arthur taking all the credit, but in this episode he very much deserves to be called a hero.
• Speaking of which, the way Arthur just defeats that Cockatrice and then carries on like it was no big deal is kind of funny. (Like... he just threw a sword at it? And it died? Alright.)
• Nimueh is so bad at acting like an innocent damsel in distress. Definitely nothing at all sus about her situation. "Please help me, good sir! Why, yes, I do know where to find the flower you're after. Just follow me into this dark cave. No need to take your sword." Arthur are you dumb (don't answer that)
• Nimueh is like "it's not your destiny to die at my hand!" Mmkay if you know who's going to kill him what's this all for then 👀
• I LOVE Merlin guiding Arthur to safety with his magic. I've said it before but (ironically) there isn't enough magic in this series. I think this is perhaps the coolest act of magic we ever see Merlin perform. And even if the CGI is at times hilariously bad, this globe of light looks pretty cool. Quite powerful, both visually and symbolically (and also literally. Merlin’s not even conscious).
• Uther has done some truly fucked up things (both on screen and implied) but crushing the flower needed for the antidote is just so needlessly cruel that I still think of it as one of the worst things he's done.
• Gwen to the rescue <3 I know everyone goes on about how sweet and kind she is, but she can also be shrewd when the situation calls for it. She's good at thinking on her feet under pressure, and it's a trait that shows in other episodes.
• Arthur and Gwen cooperating to save Merlin – love to see it. (Arthur, that's your future wife! Look at him. He doesn't even know. He doesn’t know he'll turn into a complete simp for this woman.)
• Interesting that Gwen's first reaction to Gaius's "We might need to use magic to prepare the antidote" is "but we can't! it's forbidden!!" GIRL, THE BOY YOU FANCY YOURSELF IN LOVE WITH IS DYING. MAYBE CHILL. But I guess it says a lot about Uther's reign of terror that this was so unthinkable to her.
• If I remember right (and I might not), Gaius uses magic only 3 or 4 times in the entire series and always to save Merlin's life (or to save Alice, once). It's a fairly consistent trait throughout the series that he's actually quite reluctant to use magic (whether because he's vowed not to, or because it brings up unwanted memories. Or both). It's always a last resort. I know no one cares, I just find it interesting.
• GWEN AND MERLIN'S KISS! I wonder how Arthur would have reacted at finding out that Merlin kissed Gwen first. WE WERE DEPRIVED WE WERE ROBBED
• Why didn't Uther question the fact that Merlin survived?? First he's s all intent on letting him die to teach Arthur a lesson, then he goes "haha, well done son, you were right to defy me" (??) Did he find out about Gwen and Arthur’s subterfuge to get the flower to Gaius? He must have, I suppose, but he's remarkably chill about it (I'm surprised he didn't accuse Gaius of using sorcery to save Merlin)
• Something tells me we haven't seen the last of Nimueh yet. I don't know what. Just a feeling.
#all my rewatch commentary is funny and insightful and original btw#if you were wondering#now with paragraph spacing!#and probably typos because its 1 am#rewatch1.jls#merlin's body count: still 1

merlin S1 rewatch: episode 8
this is a thing I was doing do you remember? do you remember this was a thing I was doing
it’s been like 3 months since I re-watched episode 8 (and 9!) so I’ve just re-re-watched it. Just now.
Would you let something terrible happen if it meant you'd stop something even worse happening in the future?
A fascinating ethical dilemma. Would you pull the lever in the trolley problem? Would you travel back in time and kill baby Hitler?
It isn't just Mordred’s life for Arthur’s, but Mordred’s life against the Golden Age and the freedom for magic people that Arthur is supposed to bring, so I understand why Merlin felt torn. There’s no clear-cut answer, which is what makes this storyline so compelling.
Anyway, let’s start with my main grievance – Mordred’s powers.
Merlin tells Gaius that he heard the Druid boy’s voice inside his head, to which Gaius replies:
Yes, I've heard of this ability. The Druids look for children with such gifts to serve as apprentices.
In this episode, Mordred mind-speech is a special ability that sets him apart from other children. By season 5, any random Druid can use it, to the point that Merlin is surprised when he tries to communicate with Daegal telepathically and the boy cannot hear him. The episode hints to Mordred’s magic being remarkable, even dangerous (like when he magically shatters a mirror in a fit of rage), but by season 5 Mordred barely even uses it.
I am fascinated by Mordred’s backstory and disappointed that the writers forgot their own set-up, or decided to ignore it.
I only knew Asa Butterfield from Sex Education, so it was weird to see him as young Mordred. He did a good job at looking mysterious and vaguely threatening, though it must be said he spent most of the episode unconscious.
Who was the Druid accompanying Mordred? The Merlin Wiki transcript names him as Mordred’s father, which is not in the credits (where he's only named as “Cerdan”). I didn’t get father-son vibes from their interactions, but maybe it’s just me. My impression was that he was some kind of mentor. Apparently I saw Mordred and decided he was an orphan. Don't ask me why.
We see Arthur trying to challenge his father (in private) multiple times, but he still spends a good chunk of the episode as an antagonist. He searches for Mordred when his father demands it and he’s willing to let him die, even if he’s not pleased about it. It’s only when Morgana begs him that he caves in (30 minutes into a 43-minute episode).
Uther is a fascinating portrayal of an emotionally abusive parent. I wonder what he would have done if Morgana had “come out” to him – because he clearly cared for her, in his own fucked-up way. At least enough not to want her dead. Acceptance would have been out of the question, but I’m not sure he would’ve had her executed. Probably attempted to make her go through some kind of “conversion therapy”. He did keep Gaius as his physician after all, after making him vow never to use magic again (not that Morgana would ever have accepted it).
Now Arthur, I believe, would’ve accepted Morgana if she had told him she had magic. He’s so obviously fond of her, despite all the sibling bickering.
We get the first mention of the name Emrys – from Mordred, then confirmed by Kilgharrah.
Morgana saying she couldn’t live with herself if anything happened to Gwen or Merlin is such a !!!! statement considering what will happen later in the series
You are a guard of Camelot minding your own business when suddenly someone knocks you out. Just an ordinary Tuesday. You don’t get paid enough for this.
Arthur telling Mordred (as he's freeing him from his cell) “Don't be scared. I've sent word to your people” -> HOW??? literally how. How does Arthur know where the Druids live. how did he get in contact with them. many such questions
Mordred glaring at Merlin when he finally comes to his rescue is so funny. “I had trouble getting out of the castle” he's like bitch you did NOT!
Mordred’s name drop at the end is so epic. Even if you aren’t familiar with Arthurian legends (I wasn't), the music and Kilgharrah’s warning to Merlin make this moment sufficiently ominous and tense (and if you already know who’s going to kill Arthur, you will have guessed the boy’s name already anyway)
Arthur returns Mordred to Iseldir. The next time we see young Mordred is in ep 2x03 (The Nightmare Begins) and then again in episode 2x11 (The Witch’s Quickening) — in neither of them he is with Iseldir anymore, though Iseldir is still alive, given he reappears in S3. WHAT HAPPENED. Mordred’s childhood is a compelling mystery. I like the idea of there being different Druid clans with different beliefs about Emrys and Arthur’s destiny – and possibly Mordred’s, too. Not every Druid recognises Merlin as Emrys or thinks of him as a savior, after all (see Sefa and Kara). Is this why Mordred was (perhaps?) abandoned by Iseldir? Did he find out something about Mordred's role in Arthur's death? It’s an interesting idea. To me.

merlin S1 rewatch: episode 7
Okay, episode 1x07!! Let’s get this over and done with!
This is a pretty solid “meh” episode for me. I think it’s the little blue CGI guys that ruin it for me. I’m not a fan of enchanted!Arthur either, though at least here he’s not in a situationship with Gwen yet so it’s less exasperating to watch. But still. Those little blue guys.
Pros of this episode:
Morgana’s powers are revealed!
Gaius gets to do what he does best (gaslighting)
Arthur at his most slappable ("coMe oOOOoN MorGANA Just aDmIt That yOu lIke me")
Merlin gets his cool magic staff! (criminally underused)
Merlin and Uther’s comic double act
Cons of this episode:
The little blue CGI guys
I don’t care about the Sidhe and their drama at all to be entirely honest
Random observations:
I love how supportive Merlin is when Arthur expresses an interest in Sophia. He’s like “yeah alright I’ll lie to the king don’t worry you two go have fun :)))”. He’s so precious 🥺
“Enjoy your stay at Camelot Castle. Breakfast is served from 7 to 10.”
Gaius calling Morgana his favourite patient and the heavy hinting at a close relationship between the two make his gaslighting all the more tragic. It’s also unclear how long Morgana has been in Gaius’s care — they make it sound like he's known her since she was a child, but in episode 1x02 Morgana said she remembers helping her father out of her armour (?) I’m going to put it down to Early-Installment Weirdness.
I also sleep with my hair artfully draped on my pillow. (Though I like that it makes her look a bit Medusa-like. Not sure if it’s intentional. I think so.)
Merlin believes in love at first sight. Of course he does. I’m not thinking about Freya, you are
I wouldn’t have blamed Morgana if she had just let Arthur get killed tbh
I love that Uther gives Arthur a speech that basically boils down to “why marry her, just shag her and move on” in front of Sophia and her own father, but when Morgana tries to warn him about Sophia he goes “excuse you what do you have against our guest??”
Baby’s first stunt!!
WHY IS HE HOLDING THE STAFF LIKE A MACHINE GUN 😭
to shreds, you say
please he didn’t even do it but if he’d done it he'd have enjoyed it
All in all, while I don’t love this episode there are some pretty funny scenes (“Have you some kind of mental affliction?” “Probably”) and, on top of introducing Morgana’s powers, it plants the seeds of what will happen in The Nightmare Begins (Gaius gaslighthing Morgana and Merlin empathising with her) so it's not all just pointless filler.
Also Merlin got to add 2 people to his body count, yay! (Do Sidhe count as people? They were inhabiting human bodies so I'm gonna say yes).

merlin S1 rewatch: episode 3
I'm putting this above the cut because I am outraged:
THEY CUT SOME LINES ON BBC iPLAYER. THEY CUT THE LINE WHERE MORGANA SAYS MERLIN IS "A LOVER"!! THEY CUT MERLIN SAYING "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT". WHAT KIND OF VICTORIAN CENSORSHIP IS THIS!!!!!
seriously!! (I only noticed because I'm watching this with subs off this time, but I had a transcript to glance at on my phone because sadly I can't hear without my subtitles).
random thoughts/observation:
• Interesting choice to have Nimueh cast her curse via a Fabergé egg
• Nimueh doing her Galadriel shit in a very cool cave actually
• S1 Arthur had some snazzy little outfits. Love the Jedi vest.
• I don't like bad cop Arthur :(
• baby's first raid!!!
• okay but Gaius tells Uther the plague is caused by sorcery, and the king IMMEDIATELY sends Arthur to search Gaius's chambers? "we're searching every room in town" my ass. Uther only trusts Gaius as far as he can throw him, which explain a lot about the way Gaius keeps begging Merlin to keep a low profile.
• this is maybe one of the gayest episodes. if you don't think so you're looking at the wrong couple.
• Gwen picked flowers for Morgana. MORGANA WAS READY TO FIGHT A CAVE MONSTER FOR HER GIRLFRIEND MAID. Don't talk to me.
• Merlin and Gwen's friendship is so heartwarming and pure and I've missed it!! wish the writers had remembered they were good friends later in the series
• Can we talk about Merlin being such a lovely boy. a literal ray of sunshine. can we.
• Gaius (in ep 1): "Magic shouldn't be used for idiotic pranks!!". Merlin (in ep 3): "okay so can I use it to save a man's life?" Gaius: "NO"
• I can't tell whether or not Gaius knows about the prophecy (if the writers had even decided at this point). He keeps making allusions to destiny and great things to come, so it kind of sounds like he does?
• Merlin & Gaius having their first significant disagreement about the best approach to take to solve the problem at hand. They are Feelings vs Logic. I think fandom sometimes forgets young Merlin was fierce and opinionated as well as kind and sweet. Any boy less stubborn than him wouldn't have lasted long around Gaius. I think this is one of the ways in which they are similar — both headstrong and loath to back down when they believe they are right. Which they often do.
• Gwen only asking Merlin to remember her after she's executed 😭😭😭
• lol @ Merlin being laughed out of the room after his attempt at a heroic sacrifice. He really thought he was doing something.
• Arthur: "OBVIOUSLY he's not a sorcerer!! leave him alone. he's mentally ill and in love and stupid. did I mention stupid"
• the elemental solution was kind of stupid (the beast is made of clay > water + earth, so it can be defeated by fire + wind?). They literally didn't know it was going to work. MERLIN SWEETIE WHAT WAS YOUR PLAN B. WHAT WAS YOUR PLAN A, EVEN
• great Afanc monster clearly just a guy in a suit. that's just Steve from the make-up department.
• Merlin casting his spell without a care for who hears it. BABE YOU'LL GET CAUGHT
• I know the last exchange between Merlin and Morgana is meant to be a gag but it’s also sad how relieved and happy Merlin is at hearing Morgana say she knows his secret, and her asking if she can talk to him about it :(
All in all a cute little episode, not much to say about it
funny/notable quotes:
• UTHER (to Morgana): Have you ever seen an enchantress? Believe me, they bear no sign, no mark. There is no sense of evil in the eye. (👀)
• KILGHARRAH: You are but one side of a coin. Arthur is the other.

this was fun!!! some random thoughts on ep 1
The soundtrack SLAPS. You were 100% right, Colin.
I'm dumb!! I didn't remember they invited a singer because they were celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ban on magic. I remembered Arthur was in his early 20s but no, he is literally 20? Just a baby??
Merlin gets teary-eyed when the sorceress starts shouting at Uther COLIN HOW ARE U SUCH A GOOD ACTOR
I love how Gaius shifted into dad!mode immediately. "Here's some water since you didn't wash last night" 🤨
Gaius sending Merlin out to deliver medicines — sir he literally just arrived he doesn’t know anybody
Merlin getting into trouble 10 minutes after walking out of Gaius's chambers is hilarious. LITERALLY right out of the gate. And when Gaius looked out of his window and saw him fighting the prince AGAIN I laughed. The poor man. I imagine him writing back to Hunith the next day like, "how am I supposed to keep him alive?? you didn'tell me he was stupid"
THE MACE IS UPSIDE DOWN
I like that you can tell Merlin takes a liking to Gaius immediately even though Gaius is so brusque with him. He covers him up with a blanket before sneaking out 🥺
"How small you are for such a great destiny" -> I love this line so so much
"None of us can choose our destiny, and none of us can escape it" -> now that I know what's to come, this line is pretty depressing actually
THE MERGANA (!!)
THE INCESTUOUS VIBES BETWEEN ARTHUR AND MORGANA LOL
Awkward Gwen is so freaking adorable. She's a pure cinnamon roll. I adore her.
"believe me Gwen, I'm not ordinary" alright son calm down
but yeah Merlin is still so cheeky and a touch arrogant here, and honestly? I like that. Destiny is going to humble him very soon and at times brutally and that's sad.
I love that the evil witch planned to kill Arthur during the crescendo of her song and not a moment sooner. Like, she could've stabbed Arthur at any point after everyone fell asleep but no. She said "Imma finish this actually. Since I'm here". A true professional. (Did she rehearse that, do you think)
Baby's first kill!!! ❤
starting my rewatch of season 1 💛💛💛

ok there were some cute moments I guess (still kinda boring overall imo)
random thoughts/observations:
• I know they spent most of the budget on the location because that snake shield looks like it was stolen from the set of a primary school play
• THE CGI SNAKES AREN'T ANY BETTER
• the foundations of Merlin & Gaius's relationship seem already established. Merlin sneaks around when he shouldn't (and lies about it), Gaius worries. (At some point Gaius says "I fear you'll land yourself in trouble" [!] which I found interesting, especially because of the use of the word "fear". I realise it was most likely used as a standard idiomatic expression, but it sums up Gaius pretty well). And:
GAIUS: What do I do if you get caught? MERLIN: What would you do? GAIUS: Well, you just make sure it doesn't happen, for both our sakes.
• "he gets all the glory and the girls" > he doesn't know. he doesn’t know yet that Arthur's a friendless loser
• Arthur's first "shut up!" ٩(^ᗜ^ )و
• Merlin spends so much of this episode sans-neckerchief. I'm not used to it. Sir, your neck is not meant to be thus exposed. Cover yourself.
• Merlin going to Gwen for help with the armour was so cute. He was like, "I only have one (1) friend here, hopefully she can help". (Because he was actually surprised that Gwen knew so much about armour? boy just took a chance)
• Also firmly established in this ep: Arthur's daddy issues
• Merlin and Arthur's first moment 🥺 (immediately ruined by Arthur being Arthur)
• It doesn't matter how much they make Morgana ogle men, I know she is a lesbian
• I like that Morgana and Arthur squabble like siblings, BUT Morgana tells Arthur she used to help her father with her armour when she's helping Arthur prepare for the final battle? How old was she when she got "adopted" by Uther?? Because they're making it sound like it wasn't too long ago
• Aww, Merlin was actually enjoying the tournament. Cheering for Arthur and everything. I think S5 Merlin would be tense as fuck; this poor baby doesn't even know that Arthur is a magnet for assassination attempts
• ¿¿WHAT'S WITH THE GIANT CHESS PIECE??
• THE SNAKE'S RUBBER HEAD PLEASE 😭 WHAT WAS THE BUDGET FOR THE PROPS. Did they spend it all on the giant chess piece
• Rewatching the scene in which Arthur accuses Valiant of using magic now that I know more about Arthur and Uther’s relationship makes it easier to appreciate how much of a Big Deal it was for Arthur to be made to look like a fool in front of his father. I felt sorry for him in a way I probably didn't the first time :(
• Even so, Arthur confidently proclaiming that there is a witness to Valiant's sorcery while in the background Merlin’s being informed that said witness is dead was actually so fucking funny. > Arthur: we have a witness! he can tell us everything! (cut to Merlin facepalming in the background as he listens to Gaius)
• I didn't remember Merlin got sacked in episode 2 already LMAO
• Merlin and Gwen being partners in crime <3 She literally didn't know what Merlin needed that dog statue for. He said, "hey, can you help me steal this?" and she just went, "okay :)" (I love them)
• HELP HE IS SO SMOL I CAN'T BREATHE 😭
• Genuinly impressed by this good boy's acting skills
• Merlin gets a first glimpse of Arthur's noble soul (or stupidity) when Arthur refuses to back down from the fight even though he knows Valiant is using magic. He's almost shocked by it. It's interesting to contrast to S5 Merlin, who knows Arthur "better than he knows himself", and knows that he would go to Camlann even if he knew he was destined to die there.
• Arthur's confident mask almost slipping when he tells Morgana "I'll see you at the feast" because he believes he will die in the tournament. PLEASE HE'S BEING SO NOBLE AND BRAVE AND HE'S LITERALLY JUST A BABY
Funny/notable lines:
Do you hear clanging?
ARTHUR: I don't get nervous. / MERLIN: Really? I thought everyone got nervous. / ARTHUR: Will you shut up!
I wouldn't lie to you. (!!)
The half cannot truly hate what makes it whole.
[sigh] on to episode 1x02
