I got bored and decided to decipher Rodrick Heffley's music taste to close this years-long debate once and for all.
This post will be on the lengthier side, but a TLDR is attached at the end of the post if you want the basic cliff-notes.
Disclaimer: this is a dissection of the film adaptation of Rodrick rather than his source material counterpart. Comparisons to the books are welcome but irrelevant to this analysis.
Soundtrack
During the roller-rink scene in the opening of Rodrick Rules, Rodrick and Bill take over the DJ table to sabotage Greg's moves on Holly. The song they play is "Cut Throat" by the all-female heavy metal band, Kittie. Aside from Löded Diper's music, this is the only song in the series explicitly used to establish Rodrick's music taste.
youtube
However, there's many songs off of the Rodrick Rules soundtrack alone that can be reasonably assumed to fit his music profile as well — for example, those used during the party sequence.
I wouldn't doubt if one or two tracks were intended solely as crowd pleasers, but let's not rule out the entire playlist.
In order of appearance, Rodrick's party mix includes: "Heart Heart Heartbreak" by Boys Like Girls, "Electric (feat. Miss Amani)" by The DNC, "Wait Up (Boots of Danger)" by Tokyo Police Club, "Shake" by Bikini Machine, "Move Like This" by Hammerwax, and "Jump In The Line" by Karl Zéro & The Wailers.
There's additionally three other, albeit more subtle, uses of background music to nod toward Rodrick's preferences.
The first instance is during the scene in Rodrick Rules in which Greg confides in Rodrick about his embarrassment from his failed "100 Years Ago" assignment. It's so quiet that it's easy to miss without a keen ear, but "Light Love" by Free Energy plays in the background, mixed to fit in with the ambience of Rodrick's bedroom.
The second is directly before the Löded Diper band rehearsal scene (somebody farted btw), in which Frank pulls into the Heffleys' driveway. "Rock and Roll Slob" by The Boneless Ones can be heard from the garage, once again mixed as part of the ambience.
The third again utilizes The Boneless Ones' discography, and is inserted during the opening sequence of Dog Days at the municipal pool. Rodrick explains it's "time to sell some CDs" for Löded Diper, and turns on his boombox (more on this later), blaring "Miss Fresno."
With the last two points in mind, one can assume the film universe is some twisted version where Löded Diper originally wrote and performed The Boneless Ones' discography (or something closely resembling it).
Band Tees
Rodrick mostly wears seemingly thrifted or upcycled shirts and graphic tees with witty/edgy prints, but there are outliers at times. For example, there's not one, not two, but potentially so much as five moments in Dog Days that he's seen wearing merch from Dead Kennedys, The Who, and Ramones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While most of his band tees simply include the band's logo or iconography, the latter design takes it a step further by being specific to a particular song title: "Rock 'n' Roll High School" by Ramones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's another moment which this may be the case, but it's purely speculative on my end. The Ramones also have a song named "I Don't Care," which is a phrase featured on one of Rodrick's shirts. It's not an explicit reference, but likely a reference nonetheless.
Room Posters
Guns N' Roses, Brutal Truth (Evolution Through Revolution), Stars (The Five Ghosts), Buried Inside (Spoils of Failure), and Decibel are the most notable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I assume Decibel is in relation to the 70's/80's Italian punk rock band, although I can't find any association between them and this particular artwork. If not connected to them, there's a possibility it may be to the metal magazine of the same name, but I have my doubts.
Tumblr media
In this image giving an alternate perspective to Rodrick's room, just off-screen is a Metallica poster, based on the stylization of the ending A. Beside it is a Hanson Brothers poster, which was later replaced in Rodrick Rules with a duplicate of the Stars poster for some reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Among his collage of Löded Diper flyers, there's Danny Echo posters as well as Denounce and Billy Talent stickers receiving the Hidden Mickey treatment (also a cameo from the iconic cheeseburger phone on the table).
Of course, there are many other pieces of memorabilia scattered across Rodrick's room, but several of them are blurry from the camera's depth of field or are seen at angles which make them difficult to read or for reverse image sites to identify. So for now, this is the best possible analysis of Rodrick's room in regards to music.
Miscellaneous
An easy-to-miss detail lies in the infamous Löded Diper van. Within the final few moments of Rodrick Rules as Rodrick drops Greg off at school (01:31:52), there's a semi-clear shot of the van's dashboard. On it are a set of stickers, including one referencing Huevos Rancheros, an instrumental rock-and-roll group from Canada.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Dog Days, Rodrick brings a personal boombox with him to the municipal pool. Along the top is a large sticker for Street Machine, a Czech hardcore/metal band.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cut Content
In the second studio draft of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, on page 23, scene 43, more of Rodrick's favorite artists are revealed.
Tumblr media
The nature of this may be written off as not canon, as it was added into the script while it was still a work in progress and the posters themselves didn't make it into the final product.
What sells it to me as remaining "silent" canon though is that TOOL and Slipknot are often lumped together with Kittie (previously mentioned) as they share an overlapping fanbase. This was more prevalent during the early 2000's within the mall goth subculture, but it's remained fairly consistent for other variants of metalheads over the years too.
TLDR
To recap, the various genres across all of the bands Rodrick is canonically into include indie rock, pop rock, punk rock, hardcore punk, hard rock, industrial, thrash metal, heavy metal, nu metal, death metal, sludge metal, and grindcore.
His musical preferences are punk, rock, and metal-centric but quite broad and inclusive of countries of origin and lesser-known underground artists (some don't break even 100 monthly listeners on Spotify). This leaves the door open for endless possibilities in terms of headcanons.
He's not emo despite popular fan belief, but I still think there's a chance some of his musical leanings could cross over with bands considered emo adjacent for their presence in the community. August Burns Red and The Devil Wears Prada come to mind with his music taste accounted for, but that's just my headcanon.
EDIT: 9/9/24
I've since made two Spotify playlists from my findings: one being what I imagine would be Rodrick's regular rotation, and the other being an extension of his party mix. I feel I've channeled him well, since a lot of his music taste is basically mine circa 2008/2009.
If you've read this far, thank you so much for your patience, and I appreciate any and all interactions left on this post. Happy listening!! <333

Part 2 of my Green Day themed patch vest!
Ok here we go
Tumblr media
Warning- just the warning logo (or the actual Warning sign for potential electrocution) screen printed and sewed on with green thread.
Tumblr media
Nimrod- The Ultimate Nimrod design screen printed onto black fabric and coated in Modge Podge so it doesn’t peel. I don’t have many blatantly political patches like this, so I’m open to suggestions for Green Day themed political patches.
Tumblr media
American Idiot- Saint Jimmys cross painted onto black fabric.
Tumblr media
21st Century Breakdown- once again, Mass Hysteria is my favorite song. I used bleach on a black fabric, and then splattered some more bleach around the letters. Making the letters squiggly was my way of making it different from just another patch with a song name on it, and encapsulating the panicked energy of the song. I understand than one might not be able to read it right away, but I also think that’s a cool aspect
Tumblr media
¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tre!- I tried to make this patch smaller, as these albums are not my favorite. On white fabric, I made 3 roughly even sections of diagonal stripes in the colors of each albums background. To separate each section, I used a pink color that is used on the “x”s over the band members eyes in the actual album covers. The color of each album title is based off of the color Green Days name appears on each album. I’ve used white thread for most other patches, but I specifically chose white for this patch because the album titles are in white on the the actual covers.
Tumblr media
Revolution Radio- “Legalize the truth” in all capital white letters on a black fabric. While Revolution Radio is not my favorite song from this album, “Legalize the truth” is my all time favorite Green Day lyric.
Tumblr media
Father of All, Motherfuckers- I don’t like this album, and therefore didn’t want to go through the effort if thinking up a cool patch idea. Screen print that fuckass unicorn and iron it onto a black fabric.
Tumblr media
Saviors- Bobby Sox is my favorite song and a song I hold dear to my heart for many reasons that I probably won’t get into, but it basically really helped with me accepting my own sexuality. So of course this was the song I chose to represent the album. It is “Bobby Sox” in all capital letters colored in the bisexual flag colors on black fabric.

HUUUM - s/t LP - Iranian-Austrian experimental folk trio (voice, reeds, electronics)
HUUUM's debut embodies the essence of Folk Futurism. Identifying as a band that reinterprets folklore in the present and envisions its role in the future, HUUUM recognizes folklore as a potent source of a community’s emotions—rage, desire, and sorrow. The band sees various dialects, dances, and tunes as a form of revolution, preserving elements that may one day be lost. Folklore music, shaped by times of war, oppression, uprising, and rebirth, continues to resonate. The region known as Iran today is a mosaic of diverse cultures and languages. HUUUM's members express curiosity about delving into the music of this region, exploring its evolution through time, landscapes, history, and experimentalism. This debut album marks the beginning of HUUUM's musical journey. Produced by: Rojin Sharafi Composed by: Omid Darvish Lyrics by: Omid Darvish HUUUUM: Omid Darvish: Vocals Rojin Sharafi: Electronics Astrid Wiesinger: Reeds Guest Musicians: Sarvin Hazin: Violin Mahan Mirarab: Fretless Guitar, Bass Recording by: Lukas Froschauer, Maz Vafaei Mixed by: Patrick Pulsinger Mastered by: Rupert Clervaux Artwork: Hosna Darvishi, Ciaran Birch Logo Design: Sahar Haghgoo

A-T-3 130 Beastie Boys - Cooky Puss
Cooky Puss is an odd record but, what is even odder is, it fits quite comfortably with no wave bands, the output of labels like 99 Records, or an act like an ESG. The record was played by DJs downtown and uptown. Beastie Boys at the time were Adam Yauch, Michael Diamond, Adam Horovitz, and Kate Schellenbach, they are clearly in their late teens and it doesn't take too much imagination to see how the Manhattan new wave scene and its celebration of youthful creativity would embrace a rough and ready act like theirs
The Cooky Puss EP was Beastie Boys second record, as well as getting play, it is important for a few other reasons
Something that hardly ever gets mentioned is Cey Adams did the Beastie Boys logo on the sleeve. Adams began as a graffiti writer, he appeared in Style Wars, and would become the founding creative director for Def Jam Records. He was dubbed the 'unofficial 4th Beastie Boy' due to the friendship he had with the band. Cey Adams is responsible for some of the most iconic logos in hip hop. The graf logo would have helped Cooky Puss get play uptown I would have thought. It's interesting reading about releases from this era there's a lot of talk of disguising the ethnicity of the artist, Madonna for instance, Sire tried to keep her appearance ambiguous for the first couple of releases. Beastie Boys would have been trying to show their love for graf and the culture rather than trying to appear black, I'm sure of it
Tumblr media
Something that is better reported is a segment from Beastie Revolution off the Cookie Puss EP was used on a British Airways advert without the band's permission. The Beastie Boys are all firmly middle-class, the sons of architects, playwrights, art dealers, and lawyered up. They won $40,000 from the court case which helped pay for a rehearsal space and instruments. The music was chosen for the British Airways ad by, future house DJ, Jeremy Healy of Haysi Fantayzee. Beastie Revolution is them having a crack at dub reggae, it's awful but, as being part of the hardcore punk scene they had supported Bad Brains who could switch between hardcore and reggae
The group wanted to put Cooky Puss into their live show which led them to being introduced to Rick Rubin, who they hired as their DJ. Rubin was founder of rock band Hose who had two releases on 99 Records (with pre-Russell Simmons DefJam labels) in 1982 and 83. Bringing Rick Rubin in leads to firing Kate from the band. Mike D and Ad Rock say they, along with Yauch, were in Danceteria with Rubin the night he meets Russell Simmonds to talk about It's Yours (which features Ad Rock's drum machine, thank you Jeremy Healy). It's Yours would become the first official Def Jam record (with the help of Partytime/Streetwize)
Across the The Beastie Boys various biographies (including the Spike Jonze produced product launch/keynote presentation for Apple) Run DMC's Sucker MC's is singled out as a turning point for them. Beastie Boys would become friends with Run DMC and tour with them. Darryl McDaniels wears a Beastie Boys tee on the grammy's hip hop 50 tribute. Beastie Boys didn't always fit with the narrative of hip hop history and they are often erased, but if you want to talk about hip hop on wax, Def Jam, and hip hop spreading around the world you have to talk about Beastie Boys
Beastie Boys live at The Kitchen arts space in 1983. The hip hop set starts 28 minutes

The Influence of Tee Shirt Screen Printing on Fashion and Pop Culture
What comes to your mind when you hear about t-shirt printing in Auckland? If printed t-shirts with brand logos worn by employees in café or corporate merchandise t-shirts come to your mind, it’s high time you extend your creative horizons. For decades, tee shirt screen printing has left an indelible mark on the realms of fashion and pop culture. From its humble origins as a practical fashion garment to its status as a canvas for creative expression, t-shirt screen printing has evolved into an iconic cultural phenomenon. Wondering what are the different pop culture references that find their place on t-shirts? Here we go!
Tumblr media
But first, let’s see the revolution of tee shirts in fashion
The 1950s witnessed a surge in screen-printed tee shirts as iconic figures like Marlon Brando and James Dean sported them in blockbuster films, solidifying the tee shirt's status as a symbol of youthful rebellion. The 1960s brought about a cultural revolution, and tee shirts became a medium for conveying political statements and countercultural ideologies. Bands like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles embraced screen printing to create merchandise, fueling a demand for brand tees that persists to this day.
The Artistic Expression of Screen Printing
The 1970s saw an explosion of artistic experimentation in screen printing. Artists like Andy Warhol embraced the medium, blurring the lines between fine art and commercial design. T-shirts created with screen printing in NZ became wearable epitome for artistic expression, with bold colors and intricate designs becoming synonymous with individuality and self-expression.
Pop Culture Phenomenon
In the 1980s and 1990s, tee shirt screen printing transcended the boundaries of fashion and firmly established itself in pop culture. Iconic logos, slogans, and images from movies, television shows, and video games adorned tee shirts, turning them into collectible memorabilia. The rise of music videos and celebrity endorsements further fueled the trend, as fans sought to emulate their favorite stars by donning screen-printed tees. Shows like F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Star Trek, The Simpsons, etc. found their place on t-shirts with creative references starting from quotes to images.
The intersection of fashion and streetwear
Tee shirt screen printing has also played a pivotal role in the evolution of streetwear culture. Streetwear emerged from the urban communities of the 1980s and has since infiltrated high-end fashion. Streetwear brands often use screen printing to create limited-edition drops, collaborating with artists and designers to produce exclusive, and sought-after pieces. This fusion of streetwear and high fashion has blurred the lines between casual and luxury clothing, redefining contemporary fashion trends.
Conclusion
The current stance on t-shirts created by screen printers in Auckland hasn’t changed a bit. People are still fascinated by print media, and simple fashion statements like t-shirts mean a lot in causing a ripple effect. Wearing a screen-printed tee has become a way for individuals to align themselves with causes close to their hearts, amplifying their voices in a visually striking manner. Whether you want to wear your opinion, convey a message or want something powerful printed for your brand, t-shirts can always serve the purpose.

Part 3 of my Green Day themed vest that I’m going to wear to The Saviors Tour! (Part 2 here)
I finished the album themed patches in my last post, so this is everything else!
Tumblr media
Money Money 2020- Popular song by a band called The Network that’s totally definitely not a side project of Green Day. I had another patch with the logo on it, but I’m waiting to put in on since 2 patches for the Network on a Green Day themed vest might be excessive. 2020 is written vertically in yellow on the right side of the patch, on the left side of the patch, 2 dollar signs are painted in green, each one lining up with one of the “20”s. On black fabric.
Tumblr media
Foxboro Hottubs- Another side project of Green Day’s. Recommended to make this patch by @pinterestbbg. Call me lazy, but this ones also screen printed onto black fabric. When I took these photos, I hadn’t sewn this patch or the Father of All patch yet.
Tumblr media
No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA- Something Green Day chanted during the 2016 AMAs. It’s a reference to MDC’s song “Born to Die” (the original lyric was “no war, no kkk no fascist usa”). The line was adopted by a lot of protesters in 2016 and later changed to “no Trump”.
Tumblr media
Compilation?- I made this patch before Saviors came out, for the Hella Mega Tour. It’s meant to look like fragments of each Green Day album that fit together like a puzzle. I do not consider myself an artist, and especially not a painter, so it doesn’t look realistic to each album, but I’m still pretty proud of it, even if I made it 3 years ago or so.
If you made it this far, congratulations! You get to vote on the next patch I add to this vest!

A-T-4 156 So Def So Def So Def...
It's a Def Jam. It's 40-years since the first hip hop records from one of the genre's definitive labels Def Jam came out. The first two albums I bought as a kid were on Def Jam so the label holds a special place for me
Def Jam Recordings actually debuted as a label two years earlier. Before the hip hop records the label, which was being run out of Rick Rubin's NYU dorm, had released two punk rock records. The iconic hip hop track It's Yours was produced and put out by Rick Rubin before he meets manager and promoter Russell Simmons and they become business partners
Rick Rubin's friend Ed Bahlman encouraged him to out his own records independently and Bahlman's label 99 Records handled the distribution of the first two Def Jam releases. The first two Def Jam Recordings records are records by Rick Rubin's punk rock band Hose. The inaugural release carries the Def Jam Recordings logo that is still used today on the record label and its sleeve. The logo was designed by Rick Rubin who was studying art at NYU at the time. Because of Def Jam's significance to hip hop these releases are nearly always written out of the label's history but they have Def Jam catalogue numbers and a Def Jam Recordings postal address (Rick Rubin's dorm)
As well as being the year Rick Rubin released the first Def Jam record 1982 was the year the Beastie Boys put out their debut the "Polly Wog Stew EP". Like Rick Rubin's band Hose the Beastie Boys were punk rock. Adam Horovitz wasn't a Beastie Boy yet he was in another punk rock band The Young and the Useless. Both bands played the New York hardcore circuit sometimes opening for each other and they shared the same manager, Nick Cooper
Why is the early history of the Beastie Boys important to the Def Jam story?
In 1983 guitarist John Berry leaves the Beastie Boys. Horovitz, who was still a member of The Young and the Useless,  takes his place. DJ Anita Sarko is described by the NYT as a 'crucial bridge between the city's punk and disco scenes', this is certainly true for the Beastie Boys who would dance to the records she spun at Manhattan club Danceteria. One record was "Buffalo Gals" by Malcolm McLaren and the World's Famous Supreme Team which the Beastie Boys loved so much they decided to make a parody of sorts. This became the group's next release "Cooky Puss" and amazingly it became an underground club favorite
Why am I still on about the Beastie Boys?
Having a club hit meant playing that track at club appearances. "Cooky Puss" is unlike their earlier punk rock material to perform it the band decided they needed a DJ, like RUN DMC had. The Beastie Boys manager Nick Cooper contracted Rick Rubin to be the Beastie Boys' DJ who used the name DJ Double R
A television commercial made for British Airways uses a segment of "Cooky Puss" b-side "Beastie Revolution" without permission and the Beastie Boys and their manager, being the middle class children of art gallery owners, art dealers and collectors, and playwrights, sue British Airways for copyright infringement. The case is settled the out of court for $40,000. This gives them the financial freedom to concentrate on their music. With his share of the payout Adam Horovitz buys a Roland TR-808 drum machine
Adam Horovitz, Adam Yauch, and Michael Diamond begin spending a lot of time with Rick Rubin in his dorm. They share an appreciation of hip hop. Adam Horovitz is bringing round his 808. It's the beats Rick Rubin makes on Horovitz's 808 that convinces Russell Simmons to go into a partnership with him and provides the beats for many Def Jam Recording releases, including all of those featured on this page. With the success of "Cooky Puss" Rick Rubin convinces Horovitz, Yauch, and Diamond to ditch their drummer Kate Schellenbach and punk rock in favour of becoming three MC's and one DJ
The last thing I want to say about "Cooky Puss" is the Beastie Boys logo on the sleeve is made by Cey Adams who will become Def Jam's first art director
Boom Bap
Rick Rubin is deejaying for the Beastie Boys and creating beats on Adam Horovitz's TR 808 and he wants to make a credible hip hop record. This record would be "It's Yours"
"First I met Kool Moe Dee from the Treacherous Three, who were my favorite group. And I said, “Let’s make a record together. Let’s make a Treacherous Three record.” And he said, “We can’t really do that. We’re signed to Sugar Hill, but talk to Special K, another guy in the group, because he has a brother who can rap, and maybe he’d be good for you to do this with.” I didn’t know that there were contracts, I didn’t know anything. I had no experience whatsoever. I was just a fan. So I met with Special K, and Special K introduced me to his brother T La Rock, and he wrote the words." - Rick Rubin interview for Vulture in 2014
"It's Yours" isn't by T La Rock alone, it's T La Rock and legendary DJ, member of the member of Soulsonic Force, Jazzy Jay. But Jazzy Jay wasn't the first DJ considered for "It's Yours". T La Rock had a DJ named Louie Lou (who would co-produce later tracks like "Breakin Bells" with T La Rock.) According to his brother Special K and Louie had a falling out over the demo recording and Louie was out. Luckily Rick Rubin had a connect with Jazzy Jay and the rest is history
Jazzy Jay tells a different story he's pretty bitter about the record and Def Jam Recordings in general. He doesn't think he gets enough credit for his contribution or royalties. Jay Quan asks Jazzy Jay about making "It's Yours"
"[Jay Quan] Whose idea was it to use the Uncle Louie break in the [intro]? That “Da-na Da-na Na--?”
"[Jazzy Jay] It was mine. Every bit of scratching was done live--no takes or punch-ins or whatever. Everything other than the beat and the rap, I put in it. There’s so many tracks… The scratching on that is meticulous.
"Louie Lou had done a draft on a cassette… Rick gave him the beat and he did some scratches, but it wasn’t full orchestration like the way I did it, where you had scratches coming in and I’m complementing everything. He just had a couple of scratches going in and out and that was about it." - check out Jay Quan's interview with Jazzy Jay here
The beat on "It's Yours" was made by Rick Rubin on the aforementioned 808. Jazzy Jay claims it was him who taught Rubin to program the 808 and that he also did additional work on the beat for "It's Yours." On the record label Jazzy Jay gets a co-production credit just like Special K gets credit for writing the lyrics
Something there's no disagreement on is that the Beastie Boys were in the studio when the track was being recorded and were conscripted into providing the atmospheric crowd response on the chorus and on the Scratch Party Death Mix version
As I've said Rick Rubin didn't know Russell Simmons at this time. The record label Rick Rubin had used to distribute his first two Def Jam releases, 99 Records, was in a legal dispute with Sugar Hill Records in 1984 and struggling financially. So Rick Rubin approaches Streetwise to see if they will distribute the record. Streetwise is run by Arthur Baker who produced "Planet Rock" and "Looking For The Perfect Beat", Jazzy Jay was also involved with those records as a member of The Soulsonic Force. Streetwise like "It's Yours" so much they offer to release it on their subsidiary Partytime. "It's Yours" becomes a massive hit and gets a 2nd pressing, the difference between this and the first press is that this one has the Def Jam Recordings logo underneath the Partytime logo on the label. All subsequent 1984 represses also include the Def Jam logo. The picture sleeve for "It's Yours" features Rick Rubin's now legendary Def Jam tone arm (according to Stacy Gueraseva, the tone arm was created by "a girlfriend of Hose’s lead singer, Mike Espindle," working under Rick’s direction), there is a Def Jam catalogue number on it's spine, the Def Jam logo on the back and most importantly a postal address (still Rick Rubin's dorm)
When did T La Rock realise he's made a hit? He was working in a pharmacy and heard it on the radio
"There was a DJ named Tony Humphries who played it around noon when they’d do a master mix hour. So Humphries mixed in my song and it was so unexpected that I damn near lost it. Back then, you might hear Kurtis Blow or Run DMC occasionally on the radio but that was it. After the song was over, they said that it was the most requested song of the day!" - T La Rock interview with David Ma
