On Wednesday before I gave my presentation I confessed to a new employee that I was worried it would be too long and she brightly told me her life hack was to just let AI rewrite things for her. She said I should put in all my talking points and ask ChatGPT to give me a five minute exactly presentation. I was like....how is the most polite possible way (since this is a new colleague I shouldn't get off on the wrong foot with) that I can express that I will Not be taking this advice. Ever. I told her that I didn't think we were allowed to use ChatGPT at this job (we most certainly are not, it is a nightmare for any type of protected information) and also that I prefer to write all of my own work. Despite my best efforts the last part of that was still passive aggressive, lol.
Something about being a writer makes it so that it's almost offensive to me for someone to suggest I use AI to do my work instead? Like, the day I reach the point where I let AI write something for me is the day y'all need to be checking me for brain damage because clearly I'm losing it

I want to put this out there as an educator because a lot of people are trying to use AI to do all sorts of stuff that it isn't built for, and it's going to burn you if you don't take precautions.
First, Chat GPT and other AIs are designed to only do one thing - to give you an answer based on the data points you provide it. It pulls from a massive database of similar requests to find the most common reply, and uses that to formulate an answer.
What this means is while AI can reasonably answer a math question, work out computer code, or give a competent spiel in an history essay, it's not designed to give you the correct response. If it can't find sources, it will make up reasonably seeming facsimiles or give you citations that are completely made up. While the media makes a big deal about it passing tests and spitting out academic essays, it has many easily identifiable flaws.
Another thing the media gets wrong is the idea that AI has the ability to reflect human emotion and intelligence. I cannot stress how much this is not the case. Chat AIs pull their responses based on the info you give them. If you ask it religious or romantic questions, it will respond with what seems like the answers you want. No matter how much those answers seem freaky, there is no intelligence behind them. You are still talking to a device that has the power to run your input past what thousands of actual people have said to cobble together a reply.
Both of these are arguments against unthinkingly using AI to write that paper due tomorrow or to fall into false ideas of what you're actually getting from it. What is true is that AI can and will be used as a tool for many industries, from programming to formulating medical treatment plans. It will be important to learn how to use it as a tool and not a crutch while keeping in mind we live in the same capitalist hellscape that shoved crypto and NFTs down our throats as the solution to everything. It certainly won't be, and it's important to keep those limitations in mind.
Just on a whim, because I know that Alcibiades is one of the weirdest and funniest characters in ancient Greek history, I asked ChatGPT "What's the weirdest thing Alcibiades ever did?"
ChatGPT came back with the details of something Alcibiades (henceforth referred to as 'Alci' so I don't have to keep typing it out) was accused of, but acquitted of.
When I pointed out that he had been acquitted and may not have actually done this thing, Chat GPT apologised and said, "yes, he was acquitted", and then went on to tell me that, nonetheless, the event was significant because it made Alci flee the city.
Alci did not flee the city, he was sent away on a military expedition, which was exactly what he'd wanted and asked for. When I pointed that out, ChatGPT apologised again for being wrong.
I asked again for weird things he might actually have done, and was told one version of a story I've heard before about how Alci stole some stuff from a friend. ChatGPT's version was different from what I'd heard, though, so I mentioned that, and only then did ChatGPT acknowledge that there were different versions of the story. As part of its apology and correction, ChatGPT said that it did not always have access to all information - but then proceeded to provide details of the version of the story I'd heard before, showing that it did, in fact, have access to that information.
I asked again, what is the weirdest thing Alcibiades ever did? ChatGPT gave me an answer, which was a story I'd never heard before, so I asked for a source. ChatGPT told me it was in Plutarch's Lives, and I presumed it was in his Life of Alcibiades, so that's where I looked. When I said I couldn't find it there, ChatGPT told me, sorry for not being specific, it was actually in Plutarch's Life of Nicias. So I went and read Plutarch's Life of Nicias and couldn't find it.
So I told ChatGPT that I couldn't find the story in that book, could it please be more specific? What I was hoping for was a chapter or page number or something, I just presumed I'd missed it.
ChatGPT came back with "no, actually it's not in that book, it may be a later invention, there is no concrete evidence for this story."
TL;DR: ChatGPT cannot be trusted. Even when it does give you a source, it can be wrong. It has no capacity to evaluate the accuracy or likely accuracy of the information it gives you. It will present you with wrong or debatable information and give you absolutely no indication that it may not be correct, or that other versions or interpretations are possible.

Hilarious that AI wouldn’t even be a problem if it weren’t for our generous friend capitalism. The use of ai wouldn’t matter if people weren’t constantly struggling to survive. It truly WOULD just be another tool. But the wonderful thing is that isn't the world we live in right now. Everything exists in relation to that around it. AI can’t exist outside the context of capitalism in the same way cars can’t exist outside of it. Generative ai is such an incredible reflection of how capitalism affects art. It’s so incredibly obvious to see this in the ways that various creative industries are being impacted by this like “implementation” of ai, and the looming dread that creatives feel without having some kind of protection against ending up without a reliable source of income to live. Capitalism thrives on cutting corners and gen ai is this like perfect invention to do that. We can forgo paying someone to write and review this article by feeding it through an automatic algorithm that can complete it for us, never mind the chances of including the wrong information and garbled mess of words, the only thing that matters is the completion and profit. Why would we pay someone to go through and design a viable character when we can skimp on it and let the noise machine give us something to work with. Forget about cross review or anything like that then we’d have to pay people to do it. Why would I learn how to paint and all the techniques and intricacies and histories of why we make art and the journey when I can use an algorithm to give me what I want. I want the product. I only care about the product. The end is all that matters. Why care about knowing how to love the process? I want the product. Show me the product.

Scrivener AI policy
With all the kerfuffle about NaNo and AI, just an update I found via a BlueSky user on writing tool Scrivener's policy (the recipient welcomes the sharing of this information):
Tumblr media
[Image ID: an email addressed to Steve from Jen (Literature & Latte - Makers of Scrivener and Scapple) Text as follows:
Hi Steve,
We do not have nor have we ever expressed any intention on incorporating AI into our products. We have always valued our users' privacy, intellectual property, and data security which is a big reason we operate as file-based software. This puts your data into your hands to entrust to your cloud service of choice or not or third-party tools that can integrate with Scrivener like Grammarly or not.
Scrivener does not view, collect, or share any of your writing at any time. You are welcome to review our End User License Agreement here: https://www.literatureandlatte.com/end-user-license-agreement
Thank you for supporting Scrivener, and best of luck with your writing!
Best,
Jen
