The Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 1) #40: Spidey Saves the Day!
Read Date: December 01, 2022 Cover Date: September 1966 ● Writer: Stan Lee ● Penciler: John Romita ● Inker: Mike Esposito ● Colorist: {uncredited} ● Letterer: Sam Rosen ● Editor: Stan Lee ●
Tumblr media
**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read:
what is up with Harry and Norman's hair?
and why does everyone in this series have white irises?
poor Harry
I wonder how many people over the years went into chemistry because of comic books
why does Peter think of his ex-girlfriend on a first- and last-name basis?
the inking seems rather thick in this issue
god, even Betty thinks of herself by her first and last name
where the hell did that retroscope helmet come from??
i mean, the cover already told us the outcome of this fight…
the ol' live wires and chemicals gag. ah, bronze age comics. don't ever change
"the green goblin will never trouble you again" …yeah, about that…
Dr. Bromwell is a silver fox
Synopsis: Pete is trapped by Norman Osborn who’s revealed himself to be the Green Goblin. Pete stalls him, mentioning Harry and playing with his emotions to get him to talk. Norman tells how he worked constantly to provide and always paid more attention to work than to his son. He reveals how Professor Stromm only borrowed money from a shared account, but Norman called the police reporting it as theft, leaving the company in his hands. Norman continues, saying Stromm had left formulas behind, and he decided to research them. As he was working on one, it exploded and hospitalized him.
This transformation changed him and he planned to use his company’s resources to become a super-criminal. At home, Aunt May is worried sick over Pete not calling her and Anna Watson calls in Dr. Bromwell. Meanwhile, Betty Brant is in a train station realizing she must return to New York and face everyone but unsure how. Pete is still working on the steel bonds and the Goblin recounts when Spider-Man has fought him and skews them as victories. He finishes his story and frees Pete to fight him on even terms. As they fight, the Goblin pulls out stun bombs, an electrical whip, and finally a Goblin Cannon. As Spider-Man delivers a kick, the Goblin goes into a mixture of live wires and chemicals and a fire starts.
Spider-Man rushes over not wanting to kill him, but Norman doesn’t know where he is or why he’s in costume. Not wanting to destroy his reputation or Harry’s feelings, he’s quickly changed out of his costume for the police to take him to a hospital. Pete rushes home and Dr. Bromwell has just sedated Aunt May. Aunt May begins to take care of Pete’s “fever” and Harry visits his dad in the hospital.

i will say im in the process of doing a 300 question (total) test about the ABO exam and i think the website im getting the lessons from is? wrong? or has swapped what pantoscopic and retroscopic tilt mean?
like ok. Pantoscopic tilt is where the lens is positioned with the bottom portion turned towards the eye. like so
Tumblr media
So to increase pantoscopic tilt, you would make it so the temple legs is at a more acute angle with the frame front. So to increase that, you would bend the temples downward, right? Like so:
Tumblr media
And even video tutorials say the exact same thing. (Optical Dispensing 101 link)
So why is it that when I answer "Bend temple legs down" on the test its incorrect??

Exerpt from FILM+PLACE+ARCHITECTURE journal call for proposals
Good references for links between water, cartography and the built environment.
“From Gilles Deleuze’s notion of perceptual liquidity, to the films of Marguerite Duras, water shores up questions of form, materiality, and perception in film. In Isaac Julien’s immersive film installation Ten Thousand Waves (2010), water not only informs its oceanic images, but also the design of the filmic exhibition space. At the same time, in mediating bodies of water, film can draw our attention to their role in structuring urban, cultural, and geopolitical spaces. For instance, London’s radical regeneration of its waterways and waterfronts has been represented in a variety of films and art projects about different areas: the Docklands in Derek Jarman’s The Last of England (1987); the Lea River Valley in Conrad Shawcross’s Pre-Retroscope V (2008); and the Thames Estuary in Andrew Kötting’s Swandown (with Iain Sinclair, 2012). In Atlas of Emotion: Journeys in Art, Architecture, and Film, Giuliana Bruno traces the influence of such nautical and fluvial cartography on early cinema’s mapping of urban space - its representation of the city in motion.
In The Lottery of the Sea (2006) and The Forgotten Space (2010), Allan Sekula explores the maritime industry as basis of global capitalism, calling attention to the sea’s material forces of resistance. Today, the waters of the Mediterranean and the Channel form the backdrop to the migrant crisis, as powerfully evoked in Gianfranco Rosi’s Fire at Sea (2016). In Verena Paravel and Lucien Taylor’s Leviathan (2012), the ocean is a sensory cosmos where fish, water, and vessels meet in the fiercest of ways. The ecological crisis facing the world’s oceans – as well as other aquatic environments – points to the urgency in (re)thinking the human relationship to ponds, rivers, and seas.”

My teenage early forays into goth style was very Victorian inspired and I would have loved this Blackwood Castle dress (and sometimes I miss Retroscope Fashions) paired with a leather bralette from Nuit Clothing Ateiler 🖤🪦

RETROSCOPE! Travel writing through a novelist’s eyes: Visit Vesuvius with Charles Dickens in “Pictures from Italy”: “We ascend, gradually, by stony lanes like rough broad flights of stairs, for some time. At length, we leave these, and the vineyards on either side of them, and emerge upon a bleak bare region where the lava lies confusedly, in enormous rusty masses; as if the earth had been ploughed up by burning thunderbolts. And now, we halt to see the sun set. The change that falls upon the dreary region, and on the whole mountain, as its red light fades, and the night comes on—and the unutterable solemnity and dreariness that reign around, who that has witnessed it, can ever forget!”⁣ ⁣ Intro by contributing editor @alanbernheimer⁣ ⁣ Link in bio or direct at nowheremag.com/2020/07/charles-dickens-pictures-from-italy/ .⁣ ⁣ Sugar-plums, fairy fire-shops, Polish pelisses, confused lava, double-faced coachmen, light-whiskered brigands, hired barouches, antediluvian Twelfth-cakes, vigilant dragoons, Mr. Pickle of Portici & the Corso.⁣ ⁣ Photo: Jessi Pena // @jespl⁣ ⁣ #endupnowhere #exploremore #travelstories #travel #traveling #travellit #travelliterature #stayhome #retroscope #italy #vesuvius #mtvesuvius #charlesdickens #dickensian #rome #corso #pompeii #volcano #carnival #armchairtravel #homeexplorersclub (at Rome, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/CC9HVWQDakX/?igshid=ba6vn6gu3id6

Do you know what happened to Retroscope Fashion, It looks like they just disappeared without a word and no ones talked about it?
I do know, actually! They’re sadly no longer in business, for a couple of reasons:
The owner/designer had to shift her focus to caring for her mother, who was very seriously ill.
While people may not know this, all of the clothing they opened the store with were original designs by the owner. She created them and had them made by an overseas manufacturer, which then promptly started making those items and selling them far and wide at prices below what they were charging Retroscope. She switched to a more reputable manufacturing company, but by then the damage was done to her sales and operating costs.
I miss Retroscope Fashions so much. I have several pieces I bought there that have held up wonderfully, and are still in constant rotation in my wardrobe.
