I feel like whenever people discuss "gender roles" on social media and just in society at large, they simplify it way too damn much.
#txt#like i'm not saying that societal norms are always correct#but a whole host of people seem to think that gender roles were just enforced by the Patriarchy to oppress people#as opposed to response to the situation they lived under#now again i'm not saying that there weren't some societies that didn't go too far with this shit#eventually it did become about separating men and women but even then y'all have no idea how people truly lived back then#people talk about this shit with zero fucking empathy for those that lived back then#because you pay too much attention to the people of the 20th century when society has advanced to a point that a lot of crap started to see#restrictive and outdated. if the society requires change then it should go for it#but y'all really believe this shit was invented for the sake of “oppressing women”. y'all are silly as fuck#y'all need to drinking the “patriarchy theory” kool-aid#it's killing y'all's braincells and critical thinking skills#while y'all swear y'all are incredibly critical and nuanced#**stop#it's really annoying how people address this topic#i mean feminism and all kinds of super progressive and narcissism-fueled ideologies dominate the discourse so ofc people are gonna be#incredibly biased and insensitive to people of the past because they had some ideas they clearly don't like as opposed to viewing them as#flawed human beings#50 years from now people are gonna shit on gen z for a lot of things even though we swear we are so morally superior and not like those#“savages from the past whose misogyny and hatred was so high it could blow up a whole city” like give me a break

Published: May 18, 2023
Yesterday, New York Times reporter Maggie Astor published a hit piece about me in an attempt to undermine my story and the testimonies of other detransitioners. Now that I’ve had some time to process everything more completely, I’d like to address some of the inaccuracies and falsehoods that Astor wrote about me—beginning with the disingenuous title, “How a Few Stories of Regret Fuel the Push to Restrict Gender Transition Care.”
I take issue with Astor’s flagrant use of the word “regret,” which implies a benign mistake like a bad tattoo—something I wasn’t even allowed to get until I turned 18 last year. No, I was a child when I was misinformed and misled by adults, who convinced me to permanently alter my body.
I learned through social media when I was 11 about boys and girls being trapped in the “wrong body”—an impossibility that should never have been “affirmed” by doctors. I was told by health professionals whom I trusted that I had a medical condition that required medical treatment. Not only that, but my parents were emotionally manipulated by being presented with a false dilemma—“would you rather have a dead daughter or a living son?”—despite the fact that suicidality is routinely overexaggerated in trans-identified youth.
Astor relies on the euphemism “transition care” when she means “chemical and surgical sex change services.” This is neither medically necessary nor lifesaving, but rather elective, cosmetic, and experimental.
Astor also flippantly refers to my detransition as “changing course,” implying I merely took a wrong turn instead of having doctors affirm my confusion with experimental medicine. She says I “returned to my female identity,” but being female is not an identity. It is a biological reality that describes half the human population. It is something I never stopped being despite the fact that when I was 13-15, doctors prescribed me puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgically removed my breasts to try to mold me into something that superficially resembled a boy.
Astor neglects to mention the vocal European detransitioners and how European medical societies have backed off of “gender-affirming care” after conducting systematic reviews of evidence and finding that the risks outweigh any purported benefits. She also referred to outdated statistics on detransition which include studies on adults rather than the cohort I belong to—adolescents under the “gender-affirming” model of care. These studies also had serious methodological flaws and a high loss to follow up rate.
Another statistic she likely referenced was from a study about detransitioners that specifically excluded detransitioners. Participation in the study was limited only to those who had detransitioned in the past but still identified as trans–in other words, not people like me.
If Astor had researched the topic properly, she would have discovered a recent US-based comprehensive review of medical records that found 30 percent of teens and young adults had discontinued “gender-affirming” hormones after 4 years. Another US study from this year that challenges the notion that detransition is rare found that 29 percent of youth changed their requests for hormone treatment, surgery, or both. And yet another study from a UK primary care practice found that 12.2 percent of those who had started hormonal treatments either detransitioned or documented regret, while the total of 20 percent stopped the treatments for a wider range of reasons. The authors of this study observed that the detransition rate in emerging research brings forth crucial concerns regarding the possibility of “overdiagnosis, overtreatment, or iatrogenic harm,” similar to issues encountered in other areas of medicine.
A 2021 study found that three-quarters of detransitioners did not report their detransition to their providers, thus potentially creating a false impression that they were satisfied with the “care” they received. Norway’s health authorities confirm that detransitioners updating their providers is “not a given.”
It is not true that there are only a few vocal detransitioners in the US. Many have spoken out online, but only a few have the time to travel and testify. It’s not easy to open yourself up to an onslaught of criticism, blame, and hit pieces from the New York Times. It’s not easy to go public with details of your private life.
There have been many instances of detransitioners getting overwhelmed from the response to their story and deactivating their social media accounts. Hundreds more reside in support groups and remain anonymous, not wanting the stigma and negative attention.
Lawmakers shouldn’t have to restrict sex changes to adults, but US-based medical organizations are not doing their job at following the science. If they would conduct systematic reviews of the evidence, they would likely come to the same conclusions as European countries, which have heavily restricted medical interventions for minors and specific psychotherapy as the “first line of treatment” for teens in distress over their bodies.
US-based guidelines ignored an entire body of research that found the majority of children who do not socially or medically transition will no longer experience gender-related distress in adulthood. Instead, most of them grow up to be gay or lesbian adults.
Pioneers of the evidence-based medicine (EBM) movement said the current guidelines for managing gender dysphoria in adolescents in the US are “untrustworthy” and not evidence-based.
Astor took a shot at me for the detransition rally I helped organize in March, but our event was exactly how I planned. My heart hurts every time I see a new detransitioner come out, but soon our numbers will be too large for the New York Times to dismiss as a “few stories of regret.”

Website hosting might primarily appear to be a tricky matter. After you achieve a tiny information and commence to know the patient pieces, you'll start to see that's it's significantly less complicated than it seems. Make use of this article to discover some great internet hosting tips. When transporting your website among hosts, have got a version of your own website at the two your aged and new hosts for several days. It's crucial to get this done mainly because it requires 6-48 hrs for that DNS to propagate. Most professional services have affiliate products along with the people recommending the service may not have any direct knowledge about it. You ought to acquire a lot more than recommendations under consideration when selecting your internet hold. Be sure you, rather than your web variety, handles your domain address. In the event you allow your variety control your domain name, you could be tied to that variety in the event you don't would like to alter domain names. Some deceitful hosts won't relieve the domain details if you depart on terrible conditions. In the event you handle the website, it is possible to point it at one more host's nameservers and initiate new. Choose a web host that can present you with room to grow. There are various service providers on the Internet and the majority are reasonably priced. Prevent free of charge web hosting. When a free site may be a suitable option for a small pastime web site, if you wish to generate profits, you will find just a lot of restrictions. While you are up against the newest to exchange your overall assistance to a different web host supplier, consider utilizing a file exchange service to create the transform easier. It can be extremely time-ingesting to make it happen one document at a time, and fraught with perils of by accident dropping valuable content material. The software program you need is known as FTP (file transfer protocol) client application. There are several providers on the web and nearly all are inexpensive. Although it noises specialized, you have to find out regardless of if the web hosting assistance you are thinking about has "blackholed IPs." If your provider has blackholed parts, that could imply that they generally do not control what type of companies are on their own server, which include porn web sites and spammers. When your hold continues to be blackholed, you could have difficulty with other networks refusing electronic mail from or to your site. Make sure you know in advance exactly what you plan to use your website for. If you plan on having a internet site for enterprise use, in that situation, you desire a hosting web site with plenty data transfer, storage space and details exchange. If your internet site is primarily just will be for blogging, then you'll would like to look at site mapping. Check out software developer kansas city of the company carefully, especially those featured on their site. Many shady internet hosting organizations supply phony customer reviews on his or her internet site. For a few businesses, this may be very easy to spot, for others it may be tougher. In either case, usually do not get these testimonies at encounter value. Get evaluations from impartial discussion boards not affiliated with the web internet hosting organization. If your website is weighty on images, like photography or craft, then look at the image scale of records that could be uploaded. This is important, and you do not need to be shocked to discover how the plan you end up picking restrictions styles or number of photos allowed. Keep in For more information what kind of storage space the web hold offers. This really is only pertinent for specific internet site proprietors, however. When you have a website that requires lots of video lessons and songs, then you will want to be sure the host gives the place necessary. 60 Worldbuilding Questions for A/B/O fic writers
Long post, press J to skip
So we were talking on Discord about writing A/B/O worlds, and somebody was wondering when parents should find out the secondary genders of kids and such. It led to a larger discussion about things to think about when worldbuilding for A/B/O fics, and I offered to come up with a question list for people to think about.
Feel free to reblog and add onto this, cause worldbuilding is hard for everybody but a rich world with its own history makes the fics all the better.
World Basics
Let’s start with the world in general.
What are the overall population ratios? Are alphas and omegas common or rare? Are the ratios stable or does your world have decreasing numbers of alphas/omegas?
Can women be alphas, can males be omegas? Can male omegas father children and can women alphas bear? Can betas have children?
Are there certain physical characteristics that people associate with one secondary or another? Ex: Heavily muscled alphas or soft omegas?
How often do heats/ruts occur on average? Can omegas only get pregnant during a heat or anytime?
How long do heats/ruts last?
Are mating bites a one-and-done, or can new mates be taken with new bites?
What about kids? Do omega bodies reject sex/children for anybody but their bonded mates?
Is there an emotional/psychic connection for bonded mates?
Can bonding bites be anywhere, or are they required to be on the neck?
Is there anything special about how bonding works? Venoms? Ceremonies? Do they have to consummate within a certain timeframe?
Think about anatomy. Do omegas have cloaca? Is it only male omegas who have cloaca, or do female omegas have two wombs? Do female alphas have enlarged bits to deliver seed?
Are chances of being an alpha or omega random, or do alpha/omega pairs have greater chances of similar children? Can people breed for better chances of one or the other?
Are birth control, heat/rut suppressants, and scent suppressants common, unavailable or illegal on a worldwide basis?
Is omega trafficking a problem?
Are there power structures based on secondary gender? Are omegas oppressed? Are alphas required to do anything near ruts to prevent violence?
Think of famous historical figures. How would they have landed on your gender scale? Was Queen Elizabeth I an alpha? What about Helen of Troy? These historical figures can lead to modern modes of thought.
What about religion? How has religion handled the secondarys?
Are/were arranged marriages the norm?
When do people learn what they are outside of medical testing? Are they born with a mark or secondary specific trait, or is it a mystery until they present or not?
Military: Historically are any genders or secondarys not allowed to participate in the military? Are female alphas allowed? What about male omegas?
Location Basics
Ok, narrowing down to more location specific thoughts.
How has your country or town handled specific difficulties with heats or ruts? For example: Shoji screens in Japan aren’t all that safe for an omega in heat... so has the country developed a system of safe houses or were heats particularly terrifying? Are heat rooms a thing?
What are the power structures in your specific country? Are all secondarys represented or do alphas dominate political structure?
What are the laws in your country in terms of registration? Do people have to register their secondary?
Are omegas sequestered in special compounds prior to mating or have to report to specific government controlled institutions for training or to be matched, or are they allowed to choose for themselves and interact in society?
Are birth control and suppressants legal or illegal? Are they legal only for alphas, or do omegas have to have permission of an alpha to acquire them?
Are there laws in place dictating when people have to mate or have children by?
What are the courtship customs? Are there meetings and dates? Do parents decide who will mate?
Are there things that alphas or omegas are prohibited from doing? Ex: Are omegas outlawed from professional sports in your country?
Schooling: Were all kids lumped together for school regardless of secondary? Were they separated when they presented? If it’s known from birth are omegas sent to omega-only schools?
What about customs: Are there norms about how alphas and omegas are supposed to act when interacting? Do omegas bear their scent glands in a sign of submission? Do they keep their eyes downcast in the presence of alphas? How is this different from other countries? Are there possible international problems where your alpha/omega born in one country doesn’t know the custom of another and commits a faux pas?
Alpha Basics
How are alphas generally perceived by your society? Top tier leaders, or violent thugs that are a throwback to outdated evolution?
What attracts your alphas to an omega? Scent? Body?
What are the characteristics of a rut? Do they go prowling for omegas or hunker down and get through it?
How do knots in your world work? Long? Short? Different lengths of time for different things? Do they expand quickly inside, or grow slowly until they can’t move anymore?
How do alphas mark their mates aside from bonding bites? Do they?
How do alphas act when their mate/intended mate/children are in danger? Do they go feral?
What happens if an alpha is rejected by or lose their mate?
If something happens to the mate of an alpha, that they couldn’t control, do they have any psychological issues from failing” to protect their mate?
Omega Basics
How are omegas generally perceived by your society? Breeders? Regular people? Shunned?
What attracts your omegas to an alpha? Scent? Societal status?
Are omegas subject to alpha commands? All alphas, only their mates? Does it change from before mating to after?
What are the characteristics of a heat? Are they open to any alpha who comes along, or only one of their choosing?
Do your omegas nest? Only during heats, or ongoing as a source of comfort?
Do omegas reverse mark their alphas?
What does an omega do when they or their children are in danger? Do they have a response or are they completely dependent on an alpha for protection?
What happens if an omega is rejected or loses their alpha?
Do your omegas ‘drop’ in stressful or life-threatening situations?
Are there any differences in pregnancies for male omegas? Longer gestation? Shorter?
Beta Basics
How are betas generally perceived by your society?
Are your betas attracted to alphas/omegas or vice versa?
Do betas help alphas/omegas with heats or ruts, or is this frowned upon?
Are betas regarded as “safe” by either alphas or omegas when an omega is distressed?
Do betas have any restrictions on jobs etc?
Do betas play unique roles in a family structure? Ex: An alpha/omega pair has a beta third to help raise children and satisfy an alpha’s mating urges when the omega is unable due to pregnancy etc?
Are betas affected by scents? Alpha commands?
Other Basics
For the things that just don’t fit elsewhere.
Harems/reverse Harems/Poly relationships: Do alphas tend to collect omegas and breed several? Might an omega have several alphas? Are there families that might have several in a good family dynamic? How are these arrangements perceived by society?
Heteronormativity. - Are male/female relationships regardless of secondary pushed, or with the addition of secondary genders are same-gender relationships much more accepted in your society? Do male omegas feel pressured to “look female” in order to find a mate? Do female alphas have to play up their masculine side?
Transgender people - How does the addition of secondary genders affect transgender rights? Does it make it more or less complex for a male omega to transition to female? Would a female omega have a harder time transitioning to male?
Infertility - are infertile omegas ostracized? Are they at risk of losing their mates?
Words - Mother and father? Sire and dam? Babies or pups?
Hopefully that’s a good start to help you think about the broader world around your story.
Happy Writing!

Vote 2018: California Midterm Elections
Two years later, we’re back. I miss political blogging sometimes but adulthood only leaves room for so much.
Anyway.
Did a quick writeup of the local propositions (San Francisco) and state measures on the California ballot. Let me know your thoughts, and go vote! First, the local measures.
Prop A: Seawall Renovations.
Yes. Seems fairly straightforward to both fix and upgrade a 100-year-old seawall so that SF infrastructure doesn’t get owned by the inevitable catastrophic climate change (unless we seize the state and radically shift from a thing oriented society to a person and land oriented society including rapidly shifting away from carbon technologies and redefining efficiency as sustainability, but that’s neither here nor there). The detracting arguments seem fairly petty and unconvincing, saying that sea-facing businesses and residents should fix it themselves. I think it’s the government’s job to take care of large public projects and threats to public works, so going to disagree.
Prop B: Privacy Policy.
This one is tricky, but I’m saying Yes. It’s largely symbolic at this point, stating that privacy is important and setting timelines for coming up with concrete privacy guidelines. The major detracting arguments come from the Sunshine Ordinance on public records and concerns that SF officials could tamper and limit it. After doing some reading this concerns seem overblown. Many groups are already watching for it, officials seem to somewhat flout the ordinance already, and the City Attorney has stated he won’t sign off on anything of the sort. So I think for better or worse we’re ok, and I agree with putting plans in place for comprehensive policy on privacy.
Prop C: Taxing Big Businesses to fund Homeless Services.
Yes. This is the big one, and by far the most contentious. Detractors argue there is not adequate accountability or a plan to spend the 300 million this would bring in. That the plan for homelessness is already rife with mismanagement. I was pretty swayed at first, but I have strongly U-turned. For starters, the money is being used for definitive action. Additional shelter for 1k people, cutting to the root (or one of the roots) of the problem by helping over 7k households avoid homeless, and creating 4k supportive car homes. There will be a committee put in place to manage the money and make sure it’s being used adequately. There are big provisions for mental health services as well. I could go on about this one for a while, but anyone who lives in SF knows how bad the situation is, and I simply cannot say no to taxing large tech companies who have brought in an influx of well-paid tech workers - myself included - to take a dramatic swing at homelessness in SF. And no, tech companies are far from solely to blame for homeless in SF. It’s complicated, yes. But they can handle this tax on profits over 50 million, and I want to see the homeless situation get better. Strongly encourage a Yes vote.
https://48hills.org/2018/08/propc-progressive-politics/
Prop D: Cannabis Tax.
Yes, albeit tentatively. However, most other major cities tax their new cannabis industries and do not seem to have come to great harm. Furthermore, the cannabis industry pushed for it to be delayed - and it was, until 2021. This will give the new industry more time to settle. It would also be relatively simple for the Board of Supervisors to modify the tax rate if needed or lobbied for. Welcome to have my mind changed, but it seems alright to me. Prop E: Hotel Tax to the Arts. Yes. Kind of an odd one. Without increasing the tax on hotel rooms, this would allocate a set portion of that money to the arts instead of all of it going into a general fund. I’m going to say yes because art is important and I’m a huge fan of supporting arts initiatives. The only detracting args seem to come from people worried that other taxes will rise because of this money not going directly to the general fund. But I’m doubtful that this is enough money to cause a huge uproar in the general fund. I’m open to having my mind changed, but Yes for now.
Second, the state-wide measures. This is going to be fast and a little rough around the edges. Happy to hear differing opinions.
Prop 1: Bonds to fund housing assistance programs.
Yes. This authorizes $4 billion in bonds for affordable housing programs and veteran home owning programs. I’m for anything that helps to alleviate California’s lack of affordable housing. We need it, so let’s fund it and let’s build it.
http://www.latimes.com/opinion/editorials/la-ed-proposition-1-endorsement-20181009-story.html
Prop 2: Bonds to fund housing programs for individuals with mental illness.
Yes, absolutely. Mental health is real and there is a glut of homeless people suffering with mental conditions. Let’s back initiatives to get them the help they need.
http://www.latimes.com/opinion/endorsements/la-ed-proposition-2-mentally-ill-housing-20181002-story.html
Prop 3: Bonds to fund water projects.
This is a tricky one. It’s a lot of money to support very regional interests, but it’s also public infrastructure, which I’m generally in favor of supporting. The LA Times, which I follow and often trust, says no. The League of Pissed-off Voters says it was one of their most contentious but squeaks by on a yes. There isn’t a perfect answer because while some of the money is going towards pretty legitimate public projects, a good chunk is going to private projects and powerful farms. This seems weird to me. I’m torn, but going with No.
Prop 4: Funds for Children’s Hospitals.
This one’s also weird. Private children’s hospitals lobbied to get it on the ballot. It’s hard to vote against something like a children’s hospital but I have questions about its necessity, especially since tax money would be going to private orgs. I know some people who are voting No as it’s possibly a shady method of private hospitals loading up on money they could pony up themselves. Still, the LA Times and League SF both acknowledge the oddities but ultimately find it legitimate. So I’ll got with Yes.
http://www.theleaguesf.org/#prop4
Prop 5: Expand Prop 13 for Property Owners.
This one is way deeper than I can cover here. Long story short, it allows homeowners to transfer low property tax to other residences of greater value where they’d be paying more. Local communities would lose out on this property tax. Most sources seem to peg us it as another easy method for the rich to get richer and avoid paying their taxes. This one is definitely a No.
Prop 6: Repeal the Gas Tax.
Listen, I’m going to keep this short. The answer is No. Do not repeal the gas tax. There’s a massive backlog of needed road fix and improvement projects that the gas and vehicle tax helps fund. Vote No.
https://cal.streetsblog.org/2018/09/27/fact-checking-arguments-for-repealing-the-gas-tax/
Prop 7: Permanent Daylight Savings.
Whatever. DST is outdated and frankly I think it can go. Yes.
Prop 8: Regulating Dialysis Clinic Charges.
So private for-profit dialysis clinics make a ton of money in profits, which is pretty mediocre. I’m all for providing a service and being compensated for it, but wild profits off others’ medical malaise leaves a bad taste in my mouth. This one is a deeply contentious one. Some say absolutely yes mostly because they’re annoyed with dialysis clinic profits (I agree but it seems a little petty and unfocused too). Others say this could drive out much-needed clinics and we should absolutely not. The problem is, I’m simply not sure what the cap would *do*, and the hardcore “yes” sources seem to very obviously avoid answering that. I’m going to say No, but of all the state and local measurements this is one I’m most receptive to further input.
http://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-hiltzik-dialysis-20180720-story.html
Edit: In the course of writing this, I changed my mind to a tentative yes. If only because capping massive profits on healthcare seems important for turning America into the country it very much is not but could be.
Prop 10: End Restrictions on Rent Control.
This is the “Prop C” of the state measures. Likely the most contentious. I’m voting Yes. It’s a longer story but Costa-Hawkins has been a source of conflict since it was passed and limited enacting rent control. Prop 10 does not enact rent control, but it allows it to be a tool that local government can use to combat homelessness, displacement, and skyrocketing rent. Do your reading - there’s plenty of it on this one - but I’ll reiterate my Yes.
http://www.latimes.com/opinion/endorsements/la-ed-endorsement-proposition-10-20180915-story.html
https://48hills.org/2018/10/new-study-says-rent-control-doesnt-discourage-new-housing/
Prop 11: Requiring EMTs to remain on-call during work breaks.
Tentative no. I feel like there’s a lot more to this than even the few articles I’ve read has gotten across, but it seems weird for me for ambulance companies to use a ballot measure to win what effectively a labor dispute. Also, don’t call me on my lunch break.
Prop 12: More Space for Farm Animals.
Ugh. Yes. Increase the space that farm animals live in. I don’t love the fact that costs would go up slightly, but from a moral standpoint better conditions for animals I believe trumps it. Yes.
Phew. Cheers. Midterm elections here we come.
Edit: If you want to read more, my sources were mostly The LA Times, the SF Chronicle (though I take them with a lump of salt, as I strongly disagree with their "No" on Prop C), 48 Hills, a careful reading of the City and County of San Francisco Voter Information Pamphlet, and the SF League of Pissed-Off Voters.

FDA says medication abortion drug can be distributed by mail during pandemic
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/fda-says-medication-abortion-drug-can-be-distributed-by-mail-during-pandemic/
FDA says medication abortion drug can be distributed by mail during pandemic
The move, freeing up a type of non-surgical abortion effective earlier in pregnancy, further expands abortion access under President Joe Biden and marks a victory for the slew of abortion rights groups, medical groups and congressional Democrats that have put pressure on the administration in recent months to go further in reducing barriers to abortion.
Access to mifepristone has been at the center of a legal fight during the pandemic. In response to a lawsuit last summer, federal courts blocked the requirement the drug be dispensed in person, citing dangers of Covid-19 transmission. The Supreme Court, siding with the Trump administration, later reinstated the requirement.
The Food and Drug Administration on Monday lifted the requirement, it said in a letter to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
The FDA reviewed several studies concerning the health implications of the regulations and found that the outcomes “do not appear to show increases in serious safety concerns … occurring with medical abortion as a result of modifying the in-person dispensing requirement during the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to the letter.
“Given that the in-person dispensing of mifepristone for medical termination of early pregnancy may present additional COVID-related risks to patients and healthcare personnel because it may involve a clinic visit solely for this purpose,” the letter continues, the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research “intends to exercise enforcement discretion during the COVID-19 (public health emergency) with respect to the in-person dispensing requirement.”
Medication abortion, a nonsurgical procedure effective until about 10 weeks into a pregnancy, typically entails taking two drugs several days apart. The contested regulation concerns mifepristone, the first drug, which works to block the hormone progesterone necessary for a pregnancy to continue.
The FDA information page on mifepristone states that the drug “may only be dispensed in clinics, medical offices, and hospitals by or under the supervision of a certified healthcare provider,” but does not specify where the patient must take it. The second drug taken in a medication abortion, misoprostol, causes cramps and heavy bleeding as the uterus expels its contents. It can be taken “at a location appropriate for the patient,” according to the FDA.
Long legal fight
The current legal battle over mifepristone dates back to the early months of the pandemic, following several states’ efforts to limit abortion access in labeling it an elective procedure that could be limited under state orders professing to protect stores of personal protective equipment.
Several reproductive health groups, represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, sued the FDA, arguing that it was unconstitutional for the agency to maintain the rule for the abortion drug while lifting it for other drugs in light of the pandemic. A federal court sided with the groups and temporarily blocked the requirement in July, and a federal appeals court denied the Trump administration’s efforts to overturn the ruling in August.
The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to step in, but the then-eight-member court declined to do so in October and sent the case back to the lower court. After the lower court upheld its own block on the rule in December, the Trump administration returned to the Supreme Court, which granted its request to reinstate the restrictions for patients seeking to obtain the drug while the case on the regulations before the appeals court plays out.
Biden Justice Department lawyers are due to indicate this week to a federal appeals court this week whether they intended to continue the litigation.
Support for fundamentally reassessing the medication abortion regulation has been building on the left for months. The Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, as well 55 groups including Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights, have urged the Biden administration to review the in-person requirement both during and after the pandemic.
Abortion rights and civil liberties groups cheered the policy change and called for further review of the requirements extending past the pandemic. In a statement following the announcement Georgeanne Usova, senior legislative counsel at the ACLU, said that “we cannot stop here: the restrictions on medication abortion are outdated and have obstructed patients’ access for far too long,” criticizing “medically unnecessary, harmful obstacles.”
Anti-abortion groups, however, slammed the administration for removing regulations on the procedure. March for Life President Jeanne Mancini said that medication abortions “should have more medical oversight, not less.”
The President has previously moved to support abortion rights across a slew of different policies. The Biden administration asked the Supreme Court in March to dismiss a dispute over a Trump-era rule barring federally funded health care providers in the Title X family planning program from referring patients for abortions. Later that month, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that it would issue a new proposed rule for the program in light of directives to ensure against “undue restrictions” on “federal funds or on women’s access to medical information.”
In a January memorandum, Biden fulfilled a campaign promise to rescind the so-called Mexico City Policy, a ban on US government funding for foreign nonprofits that perform or promote abortions, and directed the Department of Health and Human Services to immediately move to consider rescinding the Title X rule.
Many other court cases are making their way to the conservative-leaning Supreme Court, outside of the Biden administration’s purview. In February, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster signed a bill prohibiting an abortion if a fetal heartbeat is detected during an ultrasound with few exceptions, becoming the latest Republican to sign a so-called heartbeat bill. And in March, the Arkansas state House and Senate moved to make it the first state to enact a near-total abortion ban in 2021.

Getting started with a home interior design project is really exciting but you have to be careful to refrain from breaking the rules. The Singapore Housing and Development Board has certain requirements as far as apartment remodelling goes. Certified and licensed Singapore interior design professionals are aware of these legislative requirements and they can shed more light on the terms and conditions.
HDB Renovation and Remodelling Rules: An Overview
The most important prerequisite to keep in mind is that you need to hire a HDB Registered Renovation Contractor for all of the remodelling work you plan to do on the apartment. Your interior design company in Singapore can give you recommendations about contractors that can do a good job.
As far as a few specialised remodelling projects go, you may also have to look for licensed and certified experts. Some of these include:
A plumber licensed by the Singapore water department if the project will involve change or substation of pipes
For sanitary work, you will have to hire plumbers registered with the Singapore Plumbing Society
Window replacement contractors should also be HDB-licensed
The Energy Market Authority is the one that licenses and certifies electrical installation professionals
Apart from opting for contractors that are certified by the right authority, you may also have to acquire a permit for the remodelling of your HDB apartment. The HDB Guidelines for Building and Sanitary Work provide additional information about the instances in which a permit has to be sought.
Even if a HDB permit is not required to commence the execution, you will still have to adhere to the HDB guidelines for interior design changes and property renovations. Otherwise, work will be counted as unauthorised. Unauthorised projects have to be discontinued and the changes will need to be reverted.
If you carry out unauthorised work or you don’t obtain a permit in cases when such is essential, it’s also possible to face an administrative fine. The sanction will be in the range from 100 to 600 dollars and it will depend both on the nature and the scope of the work.
Types of Work Requiring an HDB Permit
Working with a licensed HDB interior design Singapore professional will be imperative to make sure you’re adhering to all administrative requirements. Your interior designer will take a deeper look at the scope of work you plan to have done. Based on your idea, the designer will let you know whether you will need to apply for a HDB permit.
There are several kinds of interior design and remodelling work necessitating the permission of the Housing and Development Board. Here’s a breakdown:
Flooring: the flooring projects that cannot be carried out without HDB approval include taking out the existing flooring and installing new and slightly increasing the height of the floors in the kitchen and the bathroom. There are also guidelines applying to projects that don’t require the HDB permission. The total thickness of the floor finish, for example, cannot exceed 50 millimetres.
Changing door locations: you cannot change the position of a door in the apartment without coordinating such remodelling projects with the HDB first. This is essential to ensure the right placement (for example, you cannot tear down a structural pillar for the purpose of changing the position of a door).
Archway creation: just like changing the placement of a door, you can’t tear down a wall to create an archway without the approval of the Housing and Development Board. There are also guidelines for the work. The demolition of walls has to begin from the ceiling and the workers should move down afterwards.
Railing replacement: to get rid of outdated railing and add something a bit more contemporary to the apartment, you will need to get an HDB permit and you’ll also need the approval of the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).
The replacement and installation of windows: the need for a permit applies to all windows in the apartment, except for the internal ones. Apart from needing a permit, you’ll also have to follow replacement guidelines. These refer to the size, the tint and the colour of the glass. The sliding should also be chosen to resemble that of the original window in the HDB apartment.
Bathroom expansion: if your bathroom is tiny and you’d like to maximise the area, you will need to get a permit for the expansion.
Bathroom walls and floors: if you are moving in a brand new HDB apartment, you do not have the right to change the bathroom finishes in the first three years. New HDB apartments feature some waterproofing in the bathroom. This is the main reason why requests for changing the flooring and the wall tiles will typically be turned down.
How to Comply with HDB Requirements and Carry Out Successful Apartment Remodelling
The restrictions mentioned above are not the only ones imposed by the HDB. In fact, you can easily get lost in the renovation guidelines and requirements. There are standards for every single change that you may want to do. As a result, be prepared to deal with the administrative processes before moving on to the actual work.
It is very important to hire HDB-licensed interior design professionals. These interior designers know the guidelines and the restrictions by heart. They’ll consult you about what’s possible and how certain aspects of the project should be modified for the purpose of ensuring HDB compliance.
The Home Guide team consists of HDB-certified interior designers who have extensive experience in apartment remodelling and upgrades. We know what it takes to meet all requirements and give you a dream home without breaking the rules.
If you have questions about the HDB standards and about freshening up your apartment, contact us right now. We will do our best to answer all of your questions and provide relevant information to enable the initiation of renovation work as soon as possible.

Huachuma Cactus vs. Techno-idolatry|Awaken World
Tumblr media
Contributing article writer for Get up Planet
When was actually the final opportunity you saw individuals chat to each other on the way to or from job? Take a moment to think of it. Whether you take a bus or train to reach your work environment, many of the moment you view folks glued to their phones, probably including you. It has become therefore poor that individuals are currently like drunks, walking in to each various other, slamming into walls, road illuminations, cars and trucks, falling into channels and also fountains while texting. Researcher Jack Nasar from Ohio Condition Educational institution states that there may have concerned 2 thousand mundane traumas associated to mobile phone usage in 2010. A Seat Proving ground poll in mid-2012 discovered that fifty% of cell managers mention that they have been slammed right into through one more individual because that individual was actually sidetracked by utilizing their own cell phone. Furthermore the increasing fad of selfie fatalities. If this were not therefore terrible, it would certainly be actually amusing!
Mobile innovation has actually changed coming from being an unit for far-off interaction to a device for mass hypnotism. The iPhone in the Western side globe today plays the function of the groove of the Indian fakir, whose sound hypnotizes the cobra. Your phone is actually that groove as well as you are actually the cobra. It maintains you in a steady trance while nourishing you garbage information, negative thoughts, disinformation and advertising. In modern-day American society, having a latest as well as far better phone is prominent. This form of techno-slavery is now as socially accepted as alcohol, one more hazardous stupefier that, like technology, produces an illusion of happiness. Technological idolatry is incredibly naĂŻve in its assumption that a selection of gizmos suggests liberation as well as flexibility. Techno-idolatry has come to be a modern-day, transnational techno-religion, advertised by media as the methods to happiness. Billions of individuals online have made a cyberspace identification, which is highly susceptible for control as well as abuse. An absence of sort on Facebook or even Instagram posts creates depression in teenagers and young people as well as requires emotional procedure.
Depending on to a latest study, Americans check out their phones a 52 opportunities time, generally. Astonishing! If they would appear inside on their own as typically, along with an intention to find what's within all of them and also self-reflect, their lifestyles would completely transformed. The issue, though, is that Western culture carries out certainly not show individuals this vital method of self-reflection. It is actually simply missing coming from the socio-cultural story. This is actually why Eastern metaphysical heritages are actually helpful, for they point the means inward. Obviously, plant medication is actually a direct technique that leads to clearness and also understanding, of oneself and also the world around. Still, reading the phrases of thinkers of recent is a great beginning. Discovering to appear inside is actually the only means toward healing and improvement.
Probably we can easily recommend a brand-new phrase to be actually included in the psychological guidebooks: social media sites syndrome. The complication is actually that cyberspace, which is a power generator of mass confusion, has actually represented instructor as well as physician of humankind, thereby becoming a resource of understanding to billions of folks and also a location where they acquire their approach permanently. This constant rush for innovation possesses a serious psychological effects: that everything is actually brand new is actually far better than all that is actually aged.
Properly, just before our team go any kind of further, our team can easily take a minute to make fun of this. Merely a week ago, a friend of mine who mosted likely to South Korea on a business vacation created me to discuss his problems leaving the washroom. While on the bathroom, he really did not understand what switch to press to flunk. An electronic commode had actually become a problem for my friend, who merely wished to get performed. 25 different buttons, all in Korean, produced it inconceivable to carry out the easy action of flushing the bathroom. Attempting different ones, he obtained his buttocks blown along with very hot sky, splashed along with warm and comfortable water and also germicide. To create his tale much more credible, he sent me images and video recording as he was actually attempting to leave the droid commode. He said, also to him, an MIT graduate, the innovation was way too much to find out. I giggled therefore difficult that I got up my better half up along with my giggling at this digital tragicomedy. This was actually simply very funny!
The iToilet Dash
I will never mount this "smart" bathroom in my home, to ensure that it could make me look silly. Caught in a South Oriental iToilet, my friend admitted that these individuals have taken it as well far. Personally, I select the outdated hand-operated toilets, equally as I opt for old-fashioned personal interaction with people. Also in this feeling, much older is actually certainly much better. I have actually presently detailed my mindset towards modern technology earlier. I know its worth and I make use of innovation myself. Innovation is my server, certainly not my God. I will definitely certainly never praise a machine, whether it is my cellphone, space capsule or an iToilet.
There is actually a greater issue with the idea of development when it just shrouds the outdated means of lifestyle as well as thinking. It is difficult to uncover in the well-known thinking about our time any tracks of early and great mentors. Cleverness is certainly never understanding. These critical mentors that our company need in order to reside our lives in properly have been just viewed as outdated, unimportant as well as space by the techno-digital lifestyle. But regularly progressing modern technology possesses a massive price of alienation coming from self and also attribute. Technician lifestyle is coming to be the brand new tenacity that can just deliver a replacement for joy yet never ever joy and happiness itself. Our experts present possess the cult of Apple, and also folks take pride in belonging to it. The brand new the lords, such as Google.com, Twitter And Facebook, are worshiped and feared. An electronic heck has right now been actually produced; individuals are sentenced to Facebook prison through getting 30-day restrictions. The story is controlled coming from Silicon Lowland, where social developers have presumed the divine right to control. They strongly believe that this is actually redemption. Substantially wired but deeply detached, our team reside our lifestyles certainly not realizing that this separation from our own selves and also Attributes is the origin of our individual suffering. Huachuma's serious, problem-solving clarity is truly a good thing coming from nature. In much of the world it is outlawed by the electrical powers that should not be actually. The antidote for individual chaos is disallowed. What a saddening, incorrect fact! Individual physical nature consumption is being promoted by a behavioral researcher on TELEVISION.
Fortunately is that this horrible fact is actually just one means to interact along with lifestyle. Individuals in early times prized Attributes for its own recuperation powers. The plant empire is astounding and also is easily available to use. There are actually organic methods for recovery that have actually verified to persuade manies thousand of years. All true connections are actually rooted in our hearts, and also sacred vegetations are actually listed below to reveal our team what is actually in all of them. As if on a display screen, our team may view our interior web content and create the necessary adjustments in our life, so as to irritate our interior ability permanently as well as guarantee the circulation of the recuperation power offered to our company. Rewired and also totally reset due to the electrical power and also intellect of spiritual vegetations, our team have the capacity to open our greater abilities for creativity and also aware residing. Our company possess to create room within our own selves for religious relationship. Greater conditions of awareness are actually the important food for our hearts, which are mainly malnourished and also deficient coming from staying in the present day world. The desire in the direction of unity is arising from the depths of our spirit, which belongs of the Entire. Huachuma medicine is this Global port.
Benjamim Whichcote stated that "really good men spiritualize their body systems. Bad guys incarnate their soul." This declaration will make much more sense if our company simply substitute "excellent" and "bad" with "self-aware" and also "unfamiliar." Incarnated in modern technology, our character has dropped ill and also is moving in the direction of the urgent space. I located Huachuma medicine to be actually the solution to numerous concerns and also religious ailments, which acquire resolved in the more significant clarity of the thoughts. This, naturally, irritates the powerless reductionistic researchers, that have actually ended up being an idolaters of clinical view and also the atheistic sight of lifestyle. To all of them, the spiritual realm is an aberration, a spot in some dark corner of the human mind where only delusional and psychologically ill folks go. To their restricted spiritual belief as well as understanding, the intellect of a vegetation is entitled to no attention, for, in their very own thoughts, it doesn't exist. Thereby each scientific research and also modern technology are relocating back while maintaining an illusion of progression.
All this penetrates when you welcome Huachuma medication in the correct technique and also enable on your own to observe along with your soul and also mind. It is actually by the harmony of the mind that our company can easily transmute the false realities and pseudo-religions of the here and now and afterlife salvation of the future. Right here and right now is the only place and opportunity where redemption is actually feasible. Coming from a lifetime religious hunt, I have discovered plant-based shamanism, Sufism as well as Zen Buddhism to be the methods that most anxiety the significance of living in the here and now moment. Huachuma medicine, especially, is actually that messenger whose clear and also direct notification connects with the midsts of one's center.
There are actually lots of perceptions of salvation, and also many of all of them are actually only recognized in a posthumous condition. The wide-spread idea in an external broker or agency must be actually deserted, for it is actually the primary block in taking our lives and also destiny in our hands. From the Messiah of the historical opportunities to the unusual ambassadors of the Alternative, humankind has actually been actually and still is waiting for a God-like figure to come down coming from somewhere and spare all of us coming from our very own unawareness and also wreck. This immature and irresponsible perspective in the direction of life is perhaps the best hurdle to personal as well as cumulative improvement. All externalized forms of salvation must be internalized. Sparing our own selves from our very own ignorance is an excellent start.
The final taped words of Buddha were these: "Degeneration is actually intrinsic in all element things. Exercise your own salvation along with carefulness." Perhaps the best present of Huachuma medication is this incredibly advice toward yourself and your personal redemption. It is the self-realization of the inner authority that Eastern literature conspicuously communicates of. Any time of individual history, this powerful ally would be actually a benefit. But today, with the growth of psychological health problem worldwide, this kind of adventure and also link is actually critically important. Buddha is. You are your own savior.
As Mahayana Buddhism's Sutralamkara states: "Indeed, the saving honest truth has actually never been actually addressed by the Buddha, finding that a person needs to realize it within oneself." And also this is actually maybe the absolute most significant present of Huachuma medication. It allows you to carry out that, amongst others factors. It merely opens your inner dream so you may view the imaginary attributes of enjoying pseudo-salvations like materialism, modern technology, scientific research and also religion: The worship of rational cause on one hand and also old wives' tales and dogmas on the other. Huachuma can plainly show you that organized religious beliefs is actually simply a selection of convictions as well as is actually certainly not a secure ship to board on a trip all over the ocean of life. Very same holds true for medical materialism. Each boats have holes in all of them as well as both will definitely kitchen sink on the way. All-time low line is that waking up is absolutely no longer an opportunity of minority but an essential need of the lots of, and it is actually achievable under specific conditions.
Huachuma is a delicate veil-lifter you can easily rely on. It activates the illumination in your area, where you can easily find perfectly what is actually within. In its own intense, dynamic lighting, what was obscure today may be observed precisely. And just like you can observe the condition in your area when the lighting gets on, so too in the lighting of Huachuma medicine you can see the condition in your life. Viewing leads to recovery and also improvement. Self-realization is the information of the unaware Self. Become your personal illumination. Do not try to find an external sanctuary. This is a mentor you find in Huachuma exotic. And these are not merely terms. It's what you experience, it's what you experience. And this take in is louder and more clear than any words.
I have devoted my 2nd publication,, to the Huachuma cactus.
This publication is the light dose of my medication. If you sound along with my terms, you prepare to take the following step and expertise Huachuma medication with our team in Peru. There is actually just say goodbye to opportunity for prejudices. The only opportunity we have is actually for recuperation as well as regrowth. Of course, it comes just along with discovering, deep, sincere pondering and also brave diving inside your own self.
Plant medication shamanism is the method to go coming from listed here ahead. Phrases like Heaven, Nirvana, Samadhi and Knowledge will not take us far. If our company do not find our religious roots, our team will just ruin ourselves as well as every thing around our team. What our team need is actually a straight religious knowledge of Divine Union to change our lifestyles. This transcendent expertise is actually the unifier that makes certain common growing. No volume of political as well as financial organizing are going to do the job till our company discover the hookup along with our own selves as well as attributes.
Please view our brand new film Divine Exotic, which reveals just how our team deal with the Huachuma exotic in Peru.

The Evolution of the Disney Princess
***Author’s Note: So if you can believe it, I took a Walt Disney class in the spring. I really needed a filler class, and this seemed like the best option. Anyway, one of the major assignments was a research paper (6-8 pages) with six topics to choose from. The one I chose? Compare and contrast two Disney female characters. This topic pretty much has endless possibilities to work with, but I had to narrow it down, and I ended up comparing Snow White and Moana. What more fitting than comparing the first princess with the latest? And I ended up getting an A- which is pretty freaking sweet. This is edited from what I turned in after getting feedback from my TA, and of course, works cited at the end. Enjoy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the most notable properties in Disney is its princess line up. They are the young women who typically female audiences look towards as inspirations on how to lead their lives with kindness, fearlessness, patience, and an infinity of other qualities. Yet it is not always a static image as there are countless princesses for people to choose from as an ideal role model, each with their unique ways to solve whatever problems come their way. From 1937 to 2016, the ideas of what a girl should strive for also significantly changed which can be seen with comparisons between the first Disney princess, Snow White, and the latest princess, Moana. From a homemaker to a leader-in-the-making, these two princesses also reflect on the changes of the Disney studio’s storytelling to not only be more dynamic, but also inclusive of many world-wide experiences.
Snow White illustrates a young girl of her time, both in the 1937 film and the original Brothers Grimm tale written in 1812. With particularly the film, Snow White presents the typical fashion of the 1930s with a short bobbed hairstyle and red lips and rouge against her white skin, setting the iconic image most audiences think of with the character. But true to both the film and fairytale, her major role is a homemaker, taking care of the house for the seven dwarves while they are at work. According to Cassandra Stover, Snow White embodies “traditional femininity” by following stereotypical gender roles of a woman who stays at home while the men go to work, which were ideas spreading fast in the media during the Great Depression’s tight job market and Catholic moral reforms. At the same time, censorship increased to eliminate the “silent screen vamps and early talkie spitfires” to promote passive and domestic women instead, taking a step backwards from the flappers and suffragettes of the previous decades. Her “pure maiden innocence” and embracement of domesticity “appealed to Depression-era escapism” in trying to maintain hope for a better America (Stover 2). While women had limits of going into the workforce, being a homemaker still requires work effort and a sense of community to maintain order in the household and keep up appearances, like when Snow White has the dwarves wash their hands before dinner is ready. The restrictions of female characters in the 1930s took away the sense of independence which was prevalent in the Suffrage Movement and Roaring 20’s, but with the hard times of the Great Depression in mind, it is understandable Snow White was so inviting because she perfectly set the dwarves’ home in order like the perfect housewife was expected to do. However, nothing else is known in either the fairytale or film about Snow White aside from being a kind and gentle homemaker, and her limits as a character have been subject to critique since the film’s initial release.
Modern viewers, particularly feminist critics, often claim Snow White is “helpless and in need of protection” with only “a desire for marriage” on her mind (Sawyer 9). While she does fawn over the idea of romance, it is not the main drive of her actions; it is the need for survival, not only to run away from an abusive stepmother, but also remain positive even in the most bleak of times. Again, this was part of her appeal during the harsh times of the Great Depression, generating major positive political responses of “Disney’s populist heritage” sneaking in, and including a Marxist analysis from the People’s World which described Snow White “as a symbol of ‘human decency being persecuted by a capitalistic stepmother’” (Watts 84-85). As a victim of abuse, of course Snow White needs some protection and safe space from her abuser, and it does not make her weak because of that. Her household duties are also of her own choice, not of forced servitude, in exchange for a safe place away from her wicked stepmother who is out to kill her. She is still strong with her massive capacity of kindness for others, but it is also her major flaw. The problems with Snow White lie not in the traditional gender roles she observes or seeking romance, but a lack of character development and dynamism.
As Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was one of the first full length animated feature films, there was already struggle enough at Disney to maintain a character for longer than seven minutes, the typical run time for one of their Silly Symphonies. Even Walt himself admitted that that they needed “to learn how to put personality into characters” without relying on their usual stock characters of the Silly Symphonies (De Roos 54). Some inconsistent storytelling is to be expected for such a daring feat. Unfortunately, Snow White’s character is lacking-- at least by modern standards on how viewers see a well-rounded character-- as she does not grow or learn anything new. Her only character trait outside of the traditional gender roles is solely kindness. She brings change to other characters like Grumpy, who slowly becomes caring towards her as the story progresses, but nothing about her changes that much.
While there is more to her than what most feminists typically critique on, Snow White is still an idea of what women should be rather than a realistic character with a broad range of emotions or interests who audiences can identify with. Her kindness proves to be her downfall as she takes the poisoned apple from the queen who is disguised as an old hag, only slightly hesitant at first but easily convinced that if she takes a bite, a wish will come true, which results in her sleep-like death. This displays her youthful naivety, especially since in the Grimm tale Snow White falls for the queen’s tricks three times, even after being told by the dwarves to be wary of strangers. After the trauma of almost being murdered, one would think she would be a lot more cautious before placing immediate trust in a stranger so insistent on her taking a bite from an apple. Yet her extreme gullibility is never addressed again in the film, and Snow White just gets her prince and a happily ever after anyway, as though to say that without some male figure to closely watch over her, she cannot live contently by herself. Aside from running away from her stepmother, Snow White does nothing else to achieve her happy ending, which is not too realistic for abuse victims in similar situations.
Moana does not just present the radical differences in treatment of female characters; it also shows the massive changes in Disney itself and how society views the princess films in 80 years when compared to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. As feminist theory grew over the years, audiences became more critical of female representation in Disney films, calling for independent women who can take care of themselves and are not just bound “to be beautiful, acquiescent, skinny,” and all-around perfect housewives. Media does have “a powerful role in forming the attitudes, and behaviors of it viewers,” whether positive or negative, and some view the older Disney films as harmful to children, especially girls, as they can promote these outdated ideas of women only serving as supports of “male dominance” (Sawyer 3-5). Films like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin try to address gender issues and make their female leads autonomous and equal to male characters, but it does not mean it is always handled well. Such films focus on the “pressures and entrapment of pre-feminist culture” and escaping those oppressive surroundings, but once “the heroine’s needs have been met… [she] no longer need dream of anything outside of her prince and the promising future,” letting Disney’s marketing take advantage of “selling empowerment as commodity,” which has questionable intent in “a society where advertising still encourages women to associate self-confidence with specific outward appearance” (Stover 4-6). So there is more pressure in newer films to create genuinely empowering female leads and continue their dreams outside of the male characters.
But it is not just feminist theory that affected how people view Disney today; critical race theory played in these changes as well. Much like how feminists argue these older films being male-dominated, critical race theorists see Disney dominated by white Americano/Eurocentrism, which is just as dangerous for the young audiences, especially as Disney provides the most well-known “visual representation of fairy tale characters” than any other film studio in the world. Focusing on worldwide “dominant social groups,” particularly white Americans and/or Europeans, massively affects not only personal beliefs but how we view ourselves “in relation to notions of good, bad, pretty, and ugly.” Even at a young age, children pick the common associations in mass media of white being good and beautiful and black and darkness being ugly and bad (Hurley 222-223). Children of color do understand the implications of race early on when they do not see themselves represented in media. They wonder what these stories have to say, if anything, about them in regards to their skin color and if they properly belong in society, which is why critics stress the importance of representation for people of color in children’s media so they can develop self-esteem and a sense of belonging (Hurley 228). Disney is no exception to this criticism, including its popular Princess Line where only four of the eleven characters in the franchise-- not covering Anna, Elsa or Moana as they are technically not part of the line-- are women of color. Simply having one princess per race just is not enough as there are still about a dozen white princesses in comparison, and there is more than one experience of being black, Native American, Chinese, etc. If the idea behind the franchise is that anyone can be a princess, then it makes sense to have more princesses of color for people to relate to.
Moana, both the film and character, succeed in delivering the best version of the feminist and critical race desires so far, stepping away from the usual tropes of a Disney Princess film. She follows the familiar Disney princess look of youthfulness, a round face and large, expressive eyes. However, as the first Pacific Islander of the Disney Princesses, she diverges from her white predecessors’ “skinny-Barbie image” (Travers) with her brown skin, thick and frizzy hair, thicker eyebrows, broader nose, and a slightly muscular build, straying from white and thin Americanocentric/Eurocentric beauty standards that many previous princesses abided by. Unlike Snow White, Moana’s main occupation is training to be a great chief for her home of Motonui. She is constantly learning how to solve problems or support her people, but not all the responsibility is dependent on her as everyone actively contributes to the village regardless of gender. Her role as the chief’s daughter demonstrates how women are capable of much more than the traditional gender roles of a housewife; women can be leaders and incite change among others, which audiences see with Moana as she revives the tradition of wayfinding, encouraging her people to explore beyond the comfort of their island.
Moana is also unique in being one of the few Disney princesses without a love interest; in fact, romance is never brought up in the film. She can just become a leader “without the caveat of needing to marry first,” and the plot “does not arise from an arranged marriage or love interest, but from a desire to explore the open ocean in search of a solution for their island’s deteriorating resources” (Renfro). Her character is more complex than Snow White with an inward struggle to maintain her father’s standards of a great chief—a role she will “be satisfied if [she] play[s] along”— but is also drawn to the supposedly dangerous ocean and what lies beyond the reef. She has a more broad range of emotions outside of simple kindness, and is not afraid to be assertive when she needs to be, something that would shock a 1930’s movie-going public. She proves assertiveness is not an inherently bad quality, as it is sometimes necessary to achieve a higher goal, especially when persuading a stubborn demi-god like Maui to fix the mess he made and return the heart of Te Fiti, the creation goddess.
There are some similarities between Snow White and Moana with their selflessness towards their communities before their personal needs. However, Snow White does not have any other character growth aside of her traditional feminine role and solely exists to please others with her model housewife skills. Moana still has a drive to follow her wayfinding roots and do whatever is necessary, including breaking her father’s traditions of reclusivity from the ocean, to save her home. She leaves on a journey not just for her island but also for her own reaffirmation that she will be a good leader and take Motonui to a future renewing wayfinding. She still has to learn how to properly wayfind from Maui, but Moana is the main catalyst to keep the story going as she is the only one willing to take dangerous routes where even Maui, a macho masculine warrior, is too scared to go. While Snow White needs a male figure to assure her happy ending, Moana takes it upon herself to achieve happiness when Maui leaves after their first encounter with the fire demon, Te Ka, and restore the heart of Te Fiti, to which Maui returns to offer support and keep Te Ka at bay as long as possible. Moana follows the familiar Disney Princess formula of kindness and selflessness, but as opposed to a conservative figure like Snow White, Moana takes more risks to step outside her comfort zone to find a happy ending, and break certain traditions to revive others which will progress her community forward.
In the decades since Disney’s first feature-length animated film, the studio adapted to rising criticisms to create more dynamic and complex stories and characters for multiple kinds of people to identify with, especially with their most marketable property, the princesses. These young women can be more than kind and gentle housewives; they can be loud and assertive leaders with the power to provoke societal change. And they do not have to conform to one biased idea of beauty; anyone of any skin color can be a princess. Certain character traits will always remain for the Disney Princesses, but there is an effort in the company to listen to these criticisms and create diverse stories up to date as society progresses.

THE ONLIFE
How many minutes have you spent on the internet today?
For a growing proportion of the world, our lives are increasingly lived online. Our ‘onlives’ make us gloriously connected, grant us myriad opportunities to reinvent ourselves, to learn, to innovate, to access life-saving advice and assistance, and to teleport an endless cornucopia of goods to our front doors.
But there are signs that living perpetually plugged-in is bringing unintended consequences. The dark side is expressing itself in our politics, our mental health, our screen addictions and our social cohesion. As we are gamed at every turn to keep scrolling, keep watching, keep tapping, our valuable attention is diffused between the promise of endless dopamine hits, buzzing notifications and tides of information.
How can we ensure the internet is a force for good in the disruptive years to come?
TODAY’S PICTURE
Social media platforms have become hotbeds for extreme views.
In 2018 Mark Zuckerberg was hauled in front of Congress over mishandling of data and privacy, and we became starkly aware of just how unregulated a space the online world has become. Social media platforms have become hotbeds for extreme views, terrorism, witch-hunts, and trolls; the domain of deep-fakes, data breaches, swarms of bots, and fake news.
Many of these are the surface-level expression of the ‘attention economy’ business model of internet platforms that seek to stimulate a user’s emotional response by perpetuating polarisation, shock and novelty, where the product is your attention span.20 Indeed, many internet companies employ specialist Attention Engineers programming us with manipulative design tactics in an arms race towards addiction.
Hooked, our onlives have become canvases onto which we paint meticulously curated, and often misleading identities. We have a 24/7/365 window into the self-promoted lives of those more successful, more wealthy, more beautiful and more popular than we are - a global consciousness our brains just aren’t wired for.
Business models built on ad revenue and attention, surveillance, centralisation of power, lack of tech-giant accountability, and a paucity of regulation – these are all systemic, structural problems that form the foundation of our onlives. It is from here that the patterns and events emerge and multiply. Beyond the malign political influence, studies show strong causal links between burgeoning internet use and reductions in analytical and problem-solving skills, memory creation, critical thinking and empathy, as well as spikes in anxiety.
In short, our onlives are rewiring our brains, our politics, our social interaction, and even the climate - the gargantuan amount of energy and materials required are set to exceed 14% of global emissions by 2040.22 Is it time to step back?
WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS?
There are many implications for sustainability, but here are three which stand out.
Firstly, with half the world coming online in 2019, we’re going to have to accelerate the energy revolution to keep those chargers plugged in without destroying the planet. Secondly, amid information overload, the sustainability community must learn the tricks of the trade in raising awareness and getting the most pressing challenges the attention they deserve in a distracted world. Thirdly, we need to look at our own ability to create change. Shifting entire systems and tackling global challenges is thorough, focused work. If every waking hour is spent in a state of fragmented attention, we weaken our capabilities for creating system change. If society is increasingly herded into ghettos of political persuasion and identity, our ability to cooperate is undermined. As more of the world logs on, we should also view it as a growing percentage of the world vulnerable to misinformation and manipulation.
So what can be done? As with all these dynamic areas, there are multiple possible futures open to us. The internet we have now isn’t the only one possible.
Internet, or internets? It’s perhaps outdated to talk about the internet when there are already at least four: China’s firewall-enclosed version, the GDPR internet, the Wild-West Web outside that, and the shadowy Dark Web.23 Advocates for a repurposed internet include its own founding-father Tim Berners-Lee, and professor of internet-law Jonathan Zittrain. They are calling for the a wholesale reinvention of the internet to create a regulated, equitable space, promising to protect users from hate and prejudice, fake news and data exploitation.
Governments and regulators are likely to regularly and heavily scrutinise tech giants from 2019 onwards.
There have even been calls for an age restriction on social media use, to protect the most vulnerable, and for Facebook and Google and the like to become public utilities regulated by governments.24 For future generations, as well as current internet users, education on how to navigate the onlife should be de rigueur. Learning to detect real from fake, how to maintain an on/offline balance, how to use, and not be used by, social media are critical skills for maintaining both mental health and social cohesion.
In the face of the disruption to come we can, and must, step back and reconfigure our relationship with living online, for our own resilience and that of our communities; digging deep to assess what it really means to be connected and what it means to be human.
SIGNALS OF CHANGE
Earlier this year WhatsApp added labels to indicate when a message has been forwarded, partly in response to fake news about rumoured child kidnappings disseminated via WhatsApp, which led to a spate of lynchings in India. The company is now imposing limits on how many groups a single message can be sent to. India is currently WhatsApp’s largest market with over 200 million users.
The NHS is due to launch its first ever clinic for internet and gaming addictions following growing concern over the problem and the World Health Organisation (WHO) classifying it as a mental health condition
In 2018, Donald Trump repealed net neutrality, quashing hopes for a more regulated internet to make it for the many not the few. This opens the door for internet providers to censor or charge for access to certain content and could unfairly penalise small business owners.
A wide range of services including credit scoring, policy making, social media and job recruitment are increasingly mediated by AI, some of which has taken on biases. Trained on historical data and built by humans, a large number of these algorithms threaten to perpetuate existing biases and discriminate on the basis of gender, sexual orientation or race.
An Indian start-up called Metafact is drawing on artificial intelligence to try and combat the fake news crisis. The Delhi-based company founded in 2017 hopes to use AI to empower journalists to identify fake news stories.

Let Saudi Women Find Their Own Way: Khawla Al-Kuraya
(Bloomberg Opinion) — For most of recorded history, and in many countries around the world, women have not been treated equally to their male counterparts. Much gender inequality persists but many countries have made great strides towards leveling the playing field. In most cases, it took decades of persistent work and sacrifice by women’s rights pioneers and brave decisions by enlightened leaders.
Saudi Arabia is no exception. As women living in a nation that is just 80 years old and rapidly developing and changing, we are addressing some of the same challenges that women in the U.S., Europe and elsewhere have faced. We have some ways to go, but today we run for political office, vote, drive, participate at the highest levels of business and government, enjoy guaranteed equal pay—and can even be firefighters!
That’s why, in light of the controversy about a Saudi app that supposedly “tracks women,” let’s take a collective deep breath and try to understand what is really going on in the kingdom.
At issue is an app called Absher, an online platform launched by the Saudi Ministry of Interior in 2015 to help citizens break through the bureaucratic red tape of government services. Millions of Saudi nationals and residents, men and women, benefit from more efficient, digitized services provided through Absher, including passport renewal, applying for identification cards, driver’s licenses, worker permits, visas, and so on.
Out of the 160 services Absher provides, critics have singled out one, arguing that it is a cynical government ploy to maintain traditional control of women. It is not. Let me explain.
Under the country’s guardianship laws, Saudi women require the permission or consent of a male guardian to travel. Absher has digitized the permission-granting process, which was once a bureaucratic nightmare and an impediment to women’s freedom of movement. With Absher, male guardians can no longer use the excuse of bureaucracy—the inconvenience of traveling to government offices and standing in long lines, and endless paperwork—to drag their feet or simply not act. With a few clicks, at any time and from anywhere, Absher allows male guardians to provide the necessary consent. The app also gives guardians the option of waiving travel restrictions altogether.
The app sends out alerts confirming the completion of the various services it provides: it is not, as its critics claim, a “tracking device.”
As a Saudi woman, I completely understand the uproar surrounding the antiquated male guardianship laws, and believe it is about time we were granted full freedom. The laws are restrictive, with or without Absher. But until the laws are changed, Absher is the best option for progressive Saudi men and women.
The guardianship system is a Saudi tradition that evolved from a time, not so long ago, when travel through the desert was treacherous and women were required to have a companion accompany them. The laws require a male family member to give permission for activities that are primarily related to travel and travel documents, as well as marriage. It is not true that the government requires women to get a male’s permission to open a bank account, get an education, secure healthcare or enjoy other normal life activities.
Guardianship polices are currently under review through a decree issued by King Salman. Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman has said the government needs to eventually “figure out a way to treat this in a way that doesn’t harm families and doesn’t harm the culture.”
Many Saudi women have been quite outspoken about the benefits of Absher and the way it has improved their lives. The fate of Absher should be dictated by the views of Saudi women, and Saudi citizens more generally. Disabling it would cause huge disruptions and potentially undermine the effort to liberalize guardianship and other practices.
Moreover, in a country where reliable public opinion data is scarce, data from Absher can be invaluable in informing and influencing policy. Absher can provide empirical data to assess socio-cultural trends as they pertain to guardianship. The government can gauge the efficacy of these laws in the context of Saudi society, across tribes, regions, age groups and any other meaningful variables available.
In many ways, Absher has been a technological breakthrough and a giant step forward in e-governance. But we need to draw a distinction between a platform or interface and actual policies and legislation.
Like every nation in the world, Saudi Arabia is not beyond reproach. Most Saudis welcome constructive criticism. We are aware of our shortcomings and some of our outdated institutions. In the end, Saudi women must decide how best to achieve gender equality. When we do, we will make sure the whole world knows it.

Jiaqi Hu: SECTION TWO: THE VALUE OF SOCIAL SYSTEMS
The realization of human values depends not only on natural factors, but also on social systems. “Social systems” as discussed here is a broad term refer-ring to all social conditions related to the operation of human society. In addition to the basic governing systems we usually refer to, various other mechanisms, rules, and behaviors such as social patterns, social structures, political systems, legal systems, moral values, codes of conduct, economic and culture policies, and so on are also included. The value of social systems refers to the social conditions that must be ensured in order to safeguard the orderly operation of human society (Hu Jiaqi).
Tumblr media
We have established that survival and happiness are the highest of human values, and we also know that survival and happiness are the basic pursuits of humanity, yet we often find that many people chose to die in the face of life and death; many people chose pain instead of happiness. These people are completely willing in their choice as they experience no regrets, and future generations respect and admire them for their actions. Such phenomena occur because humans rely on a set of social values when making choices in their own pursuits.
Soldiers on the battlefield charge fearlessly to their death, sacrificing their own lives in defense of their countries. In dire situations, parents would rather end their lives to ensure the survival and happiness of their children. It is faith and emotion that helps people to overcome the fear of death and to sacrifice their highest value—that is, survival—for the benefit of others.
A wife may give up her beloved career to take care of her family and support her husband’s work. An elder brother may willingly give up valuable education opportunities and start work early to support his younger brother through school. Such stories of sacrifice are abundant, for some of us measure choices against other criteria—the criteria of social values.
This does not mean that survival and happiness are not important, nor does it negate that survival and happiness are the highest values of humanity. The truth is just the opposite. Life is most precious for everyone, and anyone who lives desires happiness above all. It is only certain specific conditions of human society that require someone to sacrifice their own survival or happiness for something, or some things. If this cannot be done, human society will lose its procedures of operation, and humans themselves will lose faith in their existence. It is through a long history of development that human society finally established its own social systems.
It is necessary to restrict the values of mankind with social systems. Imagine two climbers trapped on the top of a mountain in a snowstorm with limited food. One climber might kill the other and take his food to survive. In a few days, once the snow stops, this climber might be rescued while his teammate dies. Actions like these base the survival of self upon the death of others. Hitler invaded and occupied many other countries, killing millions of Jews in the process, just to pursue better living conditions for the Germans. This is basing self-fulfillment and happiness upon the suffering and death of others.
Every individual and every group seeks to secure their own survival and ensure their own dreams of happiness. However, the pursuit of survival and happiness must be through proper means, and all aspects of social operation should follow certain rules. If everyone used despicable means to obtain survival and happiness without considering others, the world would be filled with fraud, bloodshed, and terror, and human society would lose all rules and procedure. This would inevitably lead to total chaos; humans as a whole would no longer have a chance for survival and happiness.
Therefore, it is necessary to use a series of social systems to serve and maintain human values. Only by limiting certain people from obtaining values through unjust means and guiding everyone to live, learn, and work along certain rules, and maintaining interaction between groups, can human society’s orderly operation be ensured—and, along with it, the realization of universal human values.
Tumblr media
One: The Maximum Value Principle
Social systems in all aspects of human society are established under certain conditions. There will always be corresponding social systems as long as there is human society. Take social forms, for example. Human society transitioned from the earliest migrant gathering period to settled villages, then to the tribal stage, and finally to the national stage that continues until this day. The evolution of social forms was to adapt better to humans’ ever-expanding needs in agricultural production and the enlarging scope of war. In another example, countries have each established their own different political, economic, and cultural systems and defined them in legal terms in order to regulate individual behavior and ensure the stability of society. From a much smaller perspective, every city, street, community, and country has its own set of management models. They each promote a set of lifestyles or codes of conduct appropriate to the community. All of these are within the category of social systems.
The most essential function of social systems is to serve people; it is either consciously or unconsciously formed by prevailing local circumstances, or specifically designed and promoted by a certain power. Because social systems have to regulate and mandate all aspects of society, some of them will restrict and limit the realization of certain human values. However, this restriction only exists to ensure the realization of other major human values. The state enacts laws against homicide, theft, and robbery; this undoubtedly limits the wrongful acts of the lawless, but it is precisely this legal protection that allows the vast majority of people to live peacefully in a safe environment. Such legal systems are social systems that guarantee the values of the majority by limiting the values of a smaller group.
To cite another example, a city may develop rules forbidding littering and spitting in public to ensure the cleanliness of the city. This social system would also limit the behavior of a small number of people, but it would be to protect the clean-living environment of all city dwellers. In other words, it is limiting some less important values for a small group of people to realize the more important values of the whole city.
There are some social systems that limit the values of the majority to serve the values of a small number of people, such as when authoritarian kings demand frequent tributes of treasure, fruit, and beautiful women from all over the country. This is also a type of social system, implemented by the mandatory power of feudal dynasties.
There are also some social systems that fully serve the public and affect no one’s values. For instance, the city government may establish a mayoral service hotline to solve the problems people encounter every day. This type of social system generally only has beneficiaries, and no person’s interests are harmed in the process.
Social systems pertain to all facets of human society; they involve the values of every individual and group. Each person and group will evaluate a social system from their own point of view. How should we define the quality of a social system? What characteristics should an ideal social system have?
Social systems exist to serve human beings. Since different individuals and groups from different generations have differing or even contradictory needs, no one group or generation of people can objectively evaluate a social system. It is argued here that social systems should be established with all of humanity in mind so that the values of mankind as a whole can be maximized. In other words, the whole of humanity should be considered in these systems instead of just individuals, singular groups, or specific generations. Survival, happiness, and other human values should be guaranteed for as many people as possible. This is the fundamental principle that social systems should be built upon. We refer to it here as the “maximum value” principle.
The maximum value principle does not change with the development of society, nor does it alter according to the passage of time. Perhaps one day all the issues discussed in this book will be outdated, but the maximum value principle will not become obsolete. The maximum value principle is the core principle that governs all the research in this book.
As human beings, when we think about ourselves and plan for our future, we obviously hope that all arrangements are aligned as much as possible with our own interests. The problem is that the interests of mankind are multi-faceted—there are many types of values to pursue. The acts of mankind and the multitude of designs we implement for the future of humanity cannot fully satisfy all the values of every individual, group, and generation. A plan that satisfies certain values may be in conflict with other values; when the values of a certain group of people are satisfied, the values of other parts of the population may be damaged. This is completely normal; nothing can be 100 percent perfect, and no plan can be flawless. Loss and gain go hand in hand; this contradiction will apply to the design and evaluation of any social system. The solution to this contradiction lies in the maximum value principle; the good of the majority outweighs the good of the few, and the actions that cause least harm win out.
As we know, the two most important human values are first, survival, and second, happiness. Relative to these two, all other values are subservient. If we look at value systems through such direct lenses, it is easy to manage them. Any issue related to survival comes first, any issue pertaining to happiness comes second, and all other values follow accordingly. Yet if one really dealt with problems this way, it would cause certain chaos. For example, conflicts and contradictions between individuals and countries often exist, and if one simply emphasized the survival and happiness of one party, the other party’s survival and happiness would inevitably be negatively affected. When facing a variety of complex value choices, how would we practically implement the maximum value principle?
1. Happiness Defers to Survival
When considering human values, we will separate humanity into four levels: all humans, human groups, human individuals, and intergenerational humans. “All humans” (or humanity) refers to the whole of mankind and all peoples from all generations; “human groups” includes all manners of assemblies (like countries, nations, businesses, etc.) and non-organized groups; “human individuals” denotes singular individuals or small minorities; and “intergenerational humans” refers to people from different generations.
When we say that “happiness defers to survival,” we mean that when the survival and happiness of humans on a similar scale are in conflict, we must consider survival first and happiness second. This is very simple logic. Since survival outranks happiness when dealing with the same amount of people, happiness must give way to survival during any conflict between the two. The survival of people is more important than the happiness of that same amount of people.
It follows that we cannot deprive ten people of their lives to ensure the happiness of ten other people. On the contrary, if ten people must sacrifice their happiness in exchange for the lives of ten others, that would be a worthwhile exchange of values. According to this principle of deference, anyone who kills another in order to seize their property and wealth is defying the principle of happiness defers to survival. Since the acquisition of wealth is only one category of happiness (not even the whole scope), while life is the entirety of survival, exchanging one for the other is comparatively unreasonable. Of course, this is just a simple value analysis. It does not take into account social factors. The killing and robbing of others is in itself an immoral behavior. If such behavior were allowed to spread in human society, it would inescapably lead to upset, thus affecting the survival and happiness of humans on an even larger scale.
Take another example: if a person was terminally ill and in need of $200,000 to cover medical expenses, would he be justified in robbing someone else and using the “survival trumps happiness” rule to defend his actions? Certainly not. If we simply considered one person’s survival and another person’s money as belonging respectively to the scope of survival and happiness, this value exchange would certainly seem worth it. However, if robbery or other forms of forced possession are utilized, adverse results would occur. Such adverse results would lead to social instability, and many people’s survival and happiness would be threatened. The question boils down to a choice between one person’s survival and the survival and happiness of many people, and the latter obviously outweighs the former. If one person willingly donated $200,000 in savings to save another person’s life, the meaning would be completely different.
The value principles determined here are designed precisely to consider the concept of comprehensive influence. All other value principles discussed in the following take this concept into consideration as well.
2. The Majority Rule
The majority rule stipulates that in terms of survival, happiness, and other values, when assessing within the same value category, the values of the majority are deemed most important. In other words, if the lives of ten people had to be exchanged for the lives of twenty, the value exchange would be meaningful; along the same vein, if the happiness of ten people had to be sacrificed to ensure the happiness of twenty others, that value exchange would also be worthwhile. If the situation were to be reversed, it would not correspond to the maximum value principle.
It is important to note that the majority rule compares different numbers of people within the same value component on things of similar import. The rule cannot be applied if the value component is different—that is to say, the survival of ten people cannot be compared to the happiness of twenty others, and a certain portion of the happiness of ten people cannot be compared to another portion of happiness for fifteen others.
3. Assessments Must Be Flexible
It is obvious that both the happiness defers to survival principle and the majority rule are ideal codes that deal with simple situations. In simple situations, the assessment of values is clear at a glance. A person’s life is obviously more important than a person’s happiness; two people’s happiness is obviously more important than that of one, and two people’s lives obviously outweigh one person’s life. This type of simple value assessment is indeed easily defined.
When it comes to actual problems, the situation will often be far from simple. We will find that we must compare ten people’s lives to the happiness of a thousand others, or parts of ten people’s happiness must be compared with other parts of ten other people’s happiness. These problems complicate the situation; under such conditions, flexibility becomes the key.
For example, the progress of science and technology brought the advent of cars and aircraft as means of transportation, and they can quickly send people across great distances. A car’s one- hour journey on the highway takes days to walk, and the one-hour flight time of a plane equals weeks of journeying by foot. The use of these vehicles makes people’s lives more convenient, relaxed, and efficient; these attributes are all within the scope of happiness. However, the emergence of cars and airplanes also means the appearance of car accidents and plane crashes. People die every day due to car or aircraft accidents. In terms of human values, loss of life is within the scope of survival. If we use the principle of happiness defers to survival as our reasoning, all cars and planes should be destroyed. This conclusion is clearly ridiculous, as the use of cars and aircraft facilitates all of mankind and brings great happiness to humanity. In comparison, car accidents and plane crashes occur relatively infrequently, meaning they pose minimal threat to the survival of humans. When the potential for great happiness conflicts with miniscule threat to survival, happiness ranks first.
Perhaps a group of people needs to be diverted to build a reservoir. These people have lived here for generations, and removing them from their homes would be very inconvenient. They would also have difficulty adapting to a new environment and building a new life. The building of the reservoir would also require a great amount of capital; however, the successful completion of the reservoir could solve many people’s agricultural irrigation problems. For the migrants, moving would be inconvenient, thus making it part of the happiness value. The investment of capital would be a loss in the happiness category as well. For the beneficiaries, the gain would be a rich crop, which would bring a better quality of life, which also fits within the happiness category. These different aspects of happiness cannot be simply compared, so one would have to employ some flexible thinking when deciding whether or not to build this reservoir. Perhaps under certain investments situations, moving one hundred people could only solve irrigation problems for one thousand farmers, in which case it would not be worthwhile to build the reservoir. On the other hand, if moving one hundred people could solve ten thousand people’s irrigation problems, the reservoir would be necessary.
Based on the above judgments, we can draw two clear conclusions: First, the survival of mankind is the highest of all values. Since survival is the number one value, and humanity as a whole outweighs all else in magnitude, the survival of all humanity outweighs everything else. All other values must exist secondary to the survival of mankind. This conclusion informs us that in all problems involving humans, the survival of the species is the most important problem (the focus of this book is on solving this problem as well). In the face of overall human survival, all other values can be sacrificed. Any action that threatens the survival of humanity just to guarantee other values is contrary to the maximum value principle.
The second conclusion is that within the value of happiness, the happiness of all people outranks all other values of happiness. Inside the happiness value, humanity occupies the largest share in quantity. According to the majority rule, universal happiness is most important (this is the other issue this book deals with). No individual, group, or generation can threaten the universal happiness of humanity for their own happiness, as that would contradict the maximum value principle.
The two above conclusions will be the two fundamental bases that guide this book’s research. These two conclusions seem easy to understand and obviously correct, but it is very difficult to consistently and constantly follow them. In the subsequent analysis, we will discover that we have done and are still doing things that threaten the overall values of humanity, and that these actions sometimes seriously endanger the overall survival of mankind. Judging based on the maximum value principle, such actions are clearly big mistakes; they are most unforgivable crimes and also extremely dangerous behavior.
Two: Justice
To achieve the maximum value principle, social systems must first be just. Justice is the value of social systems; it is the actual embodiment of the maximum value principle within a social system. If the maximum value principle establishes the standards and goals for social systems, justice is the means and path to achieve such goals.
As the value of social systems, justice includes two meanings: fairness and reason. This so-called fairness basically means impartiality and equality. The vast world encompasses countless beings, billions of human individuals, countless different human groups (such as different countries, different nationalities, different enterprises, different institutions, etc.), and peoples of all generations. Justice requires equal and impartial rights for all human individuals, groups, and generations. Any individual, group, or person from any generation should have the right to equally obtain respective values. This not only requires all individuals, groups, and intergenerational peoples to refrain from depriving others to ensure personal gain, but to be equal and impartial in the distribution of assets and interests.
The reason we say the maximum value principle requires fairness before all is because some people will inevitably occupy more interests in an unjust society; therefore, other people will enjoy less interest, and these people’s values will be impaired. This is only the beginning. Those who seize more interests will definitely be those who control dominant power and resources; they obtain more interests because they have the ability and conditions to do so. Due to the nature of mankind, such abilities and conditions will lead these people to focus even more social interests in favor of themselves. The final result will be that a minority of people enjoy the majority of interests, and they will only accumulate more interests as time goes by. At the same time, the number of people who profit less will grow while the portion of interest they can share in will shrink more and more. Therefore, the ultimate outcome of an unjust society is that the value of most people cannot be achieved, and this obviously does not meet the maximum value principle.
An unjust social system will also propel a very small number of people to seize value from others through immoral means (such as murder, robbery, etc.) in order to ensure personal gain. This would unsettle the entire society, and the vast majority of people would suffer. It would obviously be contradictory to the maximum value principle.
The significance of fairness also lies in the universal pursuit of happiness. Happiness is a product of comparison; only in a just, equal society could the majority of people attain happiness through comparison. The so-called reason means that social systems must consider the characteristics of humans and human society—as well as human adaptation to natural conditions—in order to exist scientifically and realistically.
For example, historians generally believe contemporary humans to be less happy than ancient humans. Today’s world is far more just and equal com-pared to ancient times; the material wealth produced by current technology also far outweighs what has been created in the past. Under these conditions, humans today are less happy than those before us. This obviously means that there are seriously unreasonable factors in our current social system. It is the unreasonable factors in our social system that lead to a reduction in overall human happiness.
It seems that fairness alone cannot guarantee the realization of the maximum value principle, just as humans’ survival could not be ensured in a fair society that was plagued by war. And if people were constantly under various types of competitive pressures, the heavy psychological burden would rob them of joy, thus negating their happiness. A just social system that can realize the maximum value principle must not only be equal and fair, but also a combination of science, realism, justice, and reason.
Enlightenment thinkers proposed the slogan of “freedom, equality, and universal love.” This slogan guided human society from superstition and ignorance to civilization. Taken literally, “equality” and “universal love” refer to fairness, while “freedom” refers to reason. This informs us that human society cannot be just “fair” and “universally loving,” but must also ensure freedom.
A fully just social system’s reason factor denotes much more than just freedom. Many other aspects must be realized to ensure the maximum value principle. In today’s world, most people experience more freedom than before under the ideals of freedom, equality, and universal love, yet they do not experience as much happiness; the highly educated class of today has far more freedom consciousness compared to villagers in remote areas, yet due to the higher level of psychological pressure, they also feel less happy.
All this shows that the reason factor in social systems includes far more than just freedom.
The organic combination of fairness and reason is the key to establishing a harmonious and stable society of justice. The downfall of many regimes in human history resulted from the lack of a good relationship between fairness and reason. For example, the wealth of one affluent group (such as a family) might be accumulated through the efforts of many generations. It would be reasonably acquired. However, if the entire society were suffering in poverty, the wealth of minorities would seem incredibly unfair. Most of the uprisings, rebellions, and social unrest in history happened under the slogan of equalizing wealth and bridging divide. There is an old saying in China: “Poverty is not a problem . . . imbalance is.” If a regime wishes to ensure long-term stability, reason is not enough. Fairness must also be safeguarded.
On the other hand, if too much emphasis was put on fairness, and reason was ignored in the process, new problems would arise. If the reasonable wealth of the elite class was excessively deprived, it would damage their productivity and enthusiasm, the overall prosperity of the society would fall, and a general state of poverty might occur. Mao Zedong Era China and today’s North Korea are all such cases.
When conducting an in-depth analysis on the justice of social systems, we can divide justice into four aspects for discussion: individual justice, group justice, intergenerational justice, and overall justice. The moral values of society encourage people to give up important personal values and exchange their own survival and happiness for that of others under specific conditions. It also opposes the establishment of personal survival and happiness upon the death and suffering of others. This is all within the scope of individual justice. We propose that everyone is equal before the law; every citizen has the right to vote and be voted for, and everyone is assigned benefits according to how much they contribute. These are all in the range of individual justice.
We oppose strong countries, nations, and religious groups who bully weaker ones; we condemn groups who invade, pillage, and commit murder against other countries, nations, or religious groups for personal gain. We advocate for equality and neighborliness between countries and nations; we encourage wealthier countries to support poorer countries, and developed areas to help undeveloped areas. All this is in the scope of group justice. We advocate for fair trade between enterprises and oppose monopoly as well as trade protectionism. This also belongs within group justice.
We oppose the uncontrolled exploitation of non-renewable resources to circumvent resource depletion; we protest excessive grazing, over-cultivation, and deforestation to prevent desertification; we are against the large-scale emission of greenhouse gases to avert global warming; and we contest the use of Freon in order to preserve the ozone layer from damage. We take these pre-cautions to leave clear waters and blue skies for the future generation and to ensure sustainable development for human society. This is within the scope of intergenerational justice.
Whether it is individual justice, group justice, or intergenerational justice, they all revolve around the theme of “fairness.” They deal with relationships between individuals, groups, and people of different generations. In addition to this, human society must also balance its overall fairness. In other words, some things that may not seem fair from a partial view would be fair to the whole society, because the overall interests of mankind sometimes require the sacrifice of partial interests—just as the maximum value principle requires the few to obey the majority (the majority rule). This issue belongs in the category of overall justice.
The overall value of human society, however, may not always be able to be realized at maximum, just as some fair principles may not bring universal survival security and happiness. That is due to the unreasonable factors within such social systems. Within the context of justice, certain parts are devoted to considering rationality based on the whole of mankind. The purpose of such consideration is to realize as many values as possible for all human beings. This is also within the scope of overall justice. Overall justice requires smaller interests to serve larger interests; it opposes the placement of individual interests before group interests, and group interests before overall interests. Nevertheless, we often see countries putting their own interests above global interests while the international community remains helpless to stop them. This is caused by the unreasonableness of social systems.
Looking at the current world from another perspective, we find that human society today is fiercely competitive. People are under constant pres-sure to update knowledge and under constant threat from competition failure. Depression becomes common and the suicide rate climbs continuously. Generally speaking, while people have obtained a level of material enjoyment, they have not obtained similar levels of happiness; instead, they are burdened by heavy mental stress. This is a cause of unreasonable social systems.
Overall justice also considers things based on humans as a species. It deals with the relationship between mankind and other species, as well as the relationship between nature and man. As human beings, we should develop principles of justice from our own point of view. That is why we propose that the overall survival of mankind exists above all else. Any factor that could possibly endanger our survival must be mercilessly eliminated. Perhaps these factors involve the survival of other species, or other issues, but every other problem becomes insignificant in the face of human survival as a whole. Because we are humanity, we cannot sacrifice our entire existence to achieve some sort of morality. Once morality leaves its bearer, it will have no more purpose.
Similarly, for humans as a whole, we cannot sacrifice our universal happiness for the survival of other species, nor can we sacrifice our own happiness as a species to ensure the happiness of other species. The justice principles we formulate must serve the survival, happiness, and other values of humanity; they should maximize the achievement of universal human values. This is both logical and reasonable.
Judging according to the principle of overall justice, Americans like eating beef, Arabs love mutton, the Chinese people like eating pork, and Koreans love dog meat. This dietary issue does not pertain to human survival, since humanity can survive on grains and vegetables. Yet humans require delicious food, and this demand is within the category of human happiness—in other words, the demand for meat satisfies some of the needs for human happiness. And so humans slaughter large numbers of other animals every day, exchanging their lives for our own happy appetites. Relative to other species, humans are immoral. But based on humanity as a whole, the justice principle must serve human values, making this immoral exchange understandable.
The justice principle has also put forth requirements for humans accordingly. We object to the torture of animals, the devastation of rare species, the destruction of the earth, and the pollution of space. In reality, not only do such requirements not conflict with humanity’s happiness and survival, but they fundamentally help humans achieve their values. A caring group can better promote world peace and harmony, a bio-diverse world can better achieve natural unity, and a beautiful earth and clean space is more conducive to human life and guarantees better long-term survival and happiness for future generations of mankind.
Finally, it is necessary to note that there is no affiliation or mutually inclusive relationship between individual justice, group justice, intergenerational justice, and overall justice. They are different social system requirements put forth by different factors from different perspectives.
