Sooooo......Just wanted to put this out there......I have this really awesome (I mean, I am biased) blog on Substack where I write a monthly newsletter about, ostensibly, the queer, regenerative farm I manage. It's also about social justice, living outside of capitalism, ecological cycles and exploring what the world can look like. My most recent piece was about the community butchering I set up (we butchered two bulls for everyone to share), about the piglet births this month, and about the ever-renewing cycles of love and impact both on-farm and expanding from the farm. We are trying to control invasive plants on the property during winter months where growth is suppressed by the cold and vegetation is more accessible since it's lacking most leaves and flowers. It's much easier to get a better look at what's going on and identify problem spots. We chopped most of the Blackberry down to prevent new growth and remove the walls of thorns which make it hard to get around out there. The next step will be digging out the thick rhizomes underground which will send out new runners to take advantage of all the now available light. Creeping Buttercup and Reed Canary Grass pose a more difficult challenge because of how much seed stock can remain in the topsoil. It's going to be a losing battle with these two but we are removing 6-8" of topsoil containing these plants and laying down burlap sacks and wood chips to suppress their establishment in the spring from any remaining seed. I was told last year that gardening is 1% planting and 99% weeding and that couldn't be more true. By putting in work now to reduce the presence of invasive weeds, we hope it'll be a bit easier to manage their impending return through spring and summer.
